Starbucks continues on a downward spiral.
The coffee chain has announced plans to to close 61 of their 84 stores in Australia.
The closures will go into effect by Sunday!
Strabuck's stock price should be plummeting right about now.

im glad they are closing down starbucks because there are so many starbucks and no body pays attention to any of the way better small coffee shops.
Well if you knew anything about economics you would notice that the stock price is acting positively to the cuts. The stocks are up.

If anyone has ever been to Australia, you would know that there are Cafe's EVERYWHERE. Why go to a Starbucks when you can go to a nice cafe and support a family owned business AND get a coffee for half the price. Whoever decided to open these 61 Starbucks that will be closing down, poor managment on their behalf - why even bother opening them.

Anyone who knows anything about business knows that maximizing shareholder value is the main, if not the only, goal of a publicly traded company. Unprofitable stores=unprofitable company. DUH.

Of course they are closing down. That's because here in Australia we actually make our own coffee rather that pay some yank conglomerate $5 a pop for some overrated product. Besides we already have many many charming little independant coffee shops run by independant AUSTRALIAN shop owners. They general public would much rather buy their coffe from them (if they must).

I'm sure there are many more, in fact i know there are. But i was one of the affected.
Before i was hired, i associated Starbucks with warm memories, as the closest one was at an airport a few hours away, and i associated loved ones gathering around for "one last coffee" together before a trip. It really wasn't about the coffee, just the relaxation of spending moments with the ones that mattered in a place where familiar faces lie.
I put my heart and soul into this company, and truly believe that the experiences and friendliness, the funny stories about the various aspects of the "job", that we all gave to every single customer is what we should remember, not because we got 2 days to shut down a store that we built years ago.
Remember, all those who claim to "hate" starbucks, no-one is forcing you to buy our coffee. There are doors that you open, menu boards that you look at. there is no pressure, you can walk away!. You do not have a right to an opinion if you have not given Starbucks a fair trial!!
If you want it your way, then you wouldn't have had the opionion in the first place, and would have spent less money at another chain and put up with second best.

OK. I'm glad SBUX is closing loser locations. Loyal customers will go the extra mile for the fix. At the same time, SBUX is opening new locations in areas where demand is strong. Starbucks didn't do well in Australia - the only people who went there were tourists who went for the familiar name over the far better coffee from local baristas. Australian's aren't interested in Starbucks.
I know so many people hate Starbucks for their own personal reasons, but has anyone ever thought about the people losing their jobs? Yes it may be a company's fault, but it's not the fault of the individuals who need work and love what they do. This goes for airlines, writers, medical personnal, restaurant workers, and even Starbucks workers. I know people are going to hate my comment, but I hate the fact that so many people seem to be ecstatic that so many people are losing work because they hate the company.

I'm an Aussie and this didn't make news over here. First we've heard of it.
StarBucks has never been a trend over here. We have Gloria Jeans and it is cheaper and tastes better. StarBucks won't be missed. After reading StarBucks' reasons for shutting down the majority of their Aussie stores it is quite clear that they haven't lost money, they just want more profit and to not lose money down the road. If any one ever comes to Australia, try a cuppa from GJ's, then you will all know why StarBucks knows they can't compete.
Australia had a well-established cafe culture before Starbucks was ever on the scene. Why would you go to a foreign owned establishment which sells a second-rate product for an inflated price, when you can go to a locally owned cafe which offers full table service, fantastic coffee for a cheaper price, and a choice of great food? I went to a Starbucks in Melbourne once at the suggestion of a person from Seattle. I had to get my own sugar and milk, from a dirty self-service counter, and to stir my drink, had to use a disposable, wooden stick! How an organization can expect to compete when providing service like this is beyond me. You can only rely on your name and being trendy for so long. At some point you have to deliver the goods as people realize they're being ripped off and can get more for their money elsewhere. Needless to say, when it came time for choosing a place to go for dinner, I suggested to my friend from Seattle that we went to one of the fantastic local restaurants that Melbourne is famous for. Food, service, value for money - check, check, check.

just to affirm what the aussies have said, we have the best coffee culture here! all the european immigrants have brought their delicious coffee with them. even our chain coffee is quite nice. we dont need coffee from a country that has such a monoculture.
Believe it or not, we are pretty sophisticated when it comes to coffee down under and Starbucks just doesn't cut it here… Say la Vee!
