Not Cool

chineseflag.JPG

It's news like this that makes us happy we live in a FREE country.

According to new reports, China will censor the Internet used by the foreign media during the Olympics in Beijing.

This completely reverses the pledge the government had made to offer complete media freedom during the games.

Sun Weide, a spokesman for the organizing committee, said "During the Olympic Games we will provide sufficient access to the Internet for reporters."

He also added that journalists would not be able to access websites or any information connected to the Falungong spiritual movement, which is banned in China.

Weide added that some other sites would also be unavailable to journalists, but did not specify which ones.

Oh, and did we mention that the Chinese people have to deal with this every day? The same thing in Cuba.

Their government blocks out certain sites and restricts access to their people.

Craziness!

Any moron who thinks China "isn't so bad" should watch "China Blue" on PBS's Independent Lens. Heck, everyone should watch it. 13 year-old girls making ten cents a day sewing jeans that sell for $90 in the west. Our importers are to blame for their exploitation as well.

  2. 102

this is approx the 136th reason i will be boycotting the games in china. not watching one minute, one clip, one news blurb! i know it makes no diff in reality, but it makes me feel better, so.

I was just in China and was truly reminded of what amazing freedom our great country gives us. I was in China studying abroad so I often had to do online research. It was such a pain in the butt because some of the topics I wanted were restricted. Every page I clicked on about Tiananmen Square was blocked. I also had the police checking talking about me when I was walking through Tiananmen Square tired off my ass. I spent a lot of the time freaking out that someone was going to bust my door down and arrest me because I looked up something "inappropriate" on the internet. Surprisingly, I could still look at Perez's site and some other celeb sites. I did end up getting one of my American cell phones blocked. Luckily, I have two cell phones and was able to use my 2nd throughout the rest of the trip. I won't completely put down China because I still had a great experience. The people were real nice and Beijing has cleaned up a lot because of the Olympics. The most important thing is to be respectful of their culture and rules even if you don't agree with them!

Re: sara – : Where did you get your information? I saw a lot of black people in China and people responded very well to them. In fact, a lot of them were stopped and asked if they could be photographed. The Chinese native was always in the picture, holding the black person, and smiling! They do the same thing with people who have very fair skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair.

I'm african-american and lived in China for 6 months last year with a wealthy chinese family. Before I went to China I heard that they weren't accepting of blacks and they censored everything, wouldn't let foreigners go certain places and all kinds of nonsense. I went anyway and found most of those stories to be greatly overexaggerated, if not completely untrue. Yes, China does censor some parts of the web but most Chinese are so websavvy they get around them so easily and can pretty much access whatever they want. The majority of Chinese are very proud of the progress they are making and I think its awful how people are trying to put a damper on their successes. No country is perfect and no country is truly free. As a black person in China, most people I met didn't treat me any differently other than gawking which was just out of simple curiosity. I made a lot of friends foreign and chinese. Bottom line is don't believe everything you read.

lots of countries control what their population sees on the internet - this isn't limited to china, and it's not special only for the olympics. no one cares until it affects them - then they call bloody murder. but really, who cares? as if they can't do research before they go, or ask someone at home to send them anything they might need. there are many BIGGER problems going on in china than blocking certain internet sites. gimme a break. if journalists don't approve they can stay home.

The Olympics Amateur sport helps to IMPROVE world relations. During the cold war, you sent a message by kicking a country's ass in the 100 m sprint or the relay or in the Olympic pool, and out of respect for, oh, WWIII, you respected said country's hosting of a world event and left the political haggling for diplomatic talks at another, more appropriate time. Smarten the f**k up.

If everyone boycotts then they can not profit more than they already have for their communist terror.

If your view is typical, it's no wonder Americans are having trouble.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the Chinese do it the same way we do, with the same equipment.

As soon as you open your mouth to tell the truth they will take you and lock you up. We have a similar form of censorship here in the usa as well. Search engines have lists of web sites they are not supposed to pull up for us called disallow lists. There are videos on youtube on the subject…

Wow, Perez, it's almost like China is a communist country, where media restrictions like this go without saying and aren't at all newsworthy because THEY ARE ASSUMED.

I live in Beijing, go to school in America, and honestly, I don't think America is as free as it seems…at all, it's controlled by the media, the corporate, and to some extent the military because that's where all your tax money goes.
I love you perez, I read your site here every day in China, but I'd really hope you do your research before you write these things out…That whole "China hates black people" thing is ridiculous enough, I went out to Sanlitun (where all the bars are) last weekend and saw plenty of people of all kinds of races there.
We are trying our best here because of the Olympics, we would really appreciate it if Americans could appreciate all the positive aspects, like how every one here in Beijing is trying to learn English, and people are volunteering to help foreign tourists. We are keeping the streets really really clean, trying to solve pollution problems and providing bilingual information booths EVERYWHERE.
China's not perfect, we have to work on a lot of things, but you keep giving out false information on your website is not something we appreicate, at least, do some research before you publish these things. The western media is always biased too, please remember that.

Olympics sucks! Nobady care about sport or human right. Turn off your TV, boycott the sponsor and let them know. We are tired of being marketing abused ! Wake up…

Listen up…our goverment whats to do the same thing. they want to sell up the internet to the handfull of large corporations who will control which websites load the fastest, if and how much you will have to pay for certain sites etc. I highly suggest people educate themselves about net neutrality before its to late.

This has been said before, but power in numbers - since WHEN has the US been FREE??

PS imagine if the olympics had been in China during the Cold War? AMAZING.
PPS I was in Beijing last year and there were street vendors ALL OVER Tiananmen Square selling 'Beijing 2008' memorabilia. We bought some and are going to tell everyone in twenty years that we went to Beijing in 2008 for the olympics. Genius.

This is why China will ultimately fail in its attempts to be a modern and economically competitive nation - its leaders are so freaking paranoid of ANYONE speaking out and questioning the government, they pull this kind of shit!

As much as censorship sux in any sense, I would much rather censorship that I know about than hidden controls which the US have been VERY good at for the past few centuries.
