Congress Loosening Up on Marijuana?

kumar__opt1.jpg

Massachusetts Congrassman Barney Frank told the House on Wednesday that the U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users and introduced a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams.

Not that we smoke the 420, but woo hoo!

Representative Frank went on to say that current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans.

"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business. I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time."

Funny, something tells us that Representative Frank won't get far with his proposal.

The war on drugs has been the most miserable failure this country has ever seen. Since it started, we have spent billions of dollars, locked up millions of people, and the net result is what exactly?
Has drug use gone down? No
Has the war on drugs made it any more difficult to find drugs?
No fucking way, you can find any drug you want in any town USA in a matter of minutes. You can find drugs in high school and prisons in every state.
And if I want to smoke weed in my own home, why should that be illegal?
Firearms and fast food and cigarettes are legal, and each year 3-400000 people die from smoking related illness, and don't even get me started on obesity and heart disease from fat ass Americans who eat too much crap food.

Prescription pill addiction accounts for half (if not more) of all the drug addicts in this country, and people get upset over weed?
Oh well, keep it illegal. Every drug dealer in the world thanks you for it because there's nothing the cartels fear more than softening the drug laws in the US, because they would lose so much business overnight if it were controlled and sold in the US.

And let's remember our history, Prohibition anyone? Did that work?

Re: elle – You actually believe that "gateway drug" nonsense?
May I just say that some of the smartest people I know are heavy users of marijuana? For example; one friend of mine is currently attending NYU, another is going to BROWN this fall. So to say that weed smokers are "just plain stupid" as you say is highly inaccurate.
It's as though you got all your drug facts at above the influence. Try reading up a bit on your own sometime.

    Re: no
Scientists also can "prove" that God does'nt exist; that does'nt make them right. Because of the bad rap that marijuana has received, it's no wonder that people use it as a "gateway drug". When society says, "drugs are bad" and put marijuana is that category, of course, when people try to escape their mental anguish and anxiety will they first try marijuana. When, what do you know, marijuana does'nt do "it" for them, they try hardcore drugs like coke and ecstasy. Then, can I understand how mental illness can prevail like you say. However, the sole use of marijuana has been scientifically proven to cure many illnesses and be therapeudic for anxeity and stress. As I mentioned before, God is being eradicated from society but people are still worshipping Him, because sometimes science and law is BULLSHIT! Simple.

Old lawmakers believe in the old "Domino Effect" That is when if one thing goes then the next ones goes and so on. So if X amout of weed is decriminalized, soon an X amount of cocaine will be. Then heroin. Then… So it'll never happen.

ALSO…AMERICA IS HAS THE MOST INCARCERATED PEOPLE IN THE WORLD…WE SURPASS COMMUNIST CHINA ;) AND 1 MIL OF THOSE IN JAIL RIGHT NOW ARE IN FOR NON-VIOLENT CRIMES, LIKE A DRUG POSSESION CRIME.
It's terrible that people are against legalizing it, smoking kills more people even from second hand smoke…and alcohol causes death and i dont know me an angry potsmokr ;)

My opinion, charge people a "Growers Tax", where for a yearly fee, you would be allowed to grow for personal consumption at your home, but you are prohibited from selling or transporting.

I was in DC last week and toured the Capital. Later on, the kids and I went up to the Gallery to watch congress meet. Barney was one of the more lucid people present.
    .
    .
When you do a Gallery tour, you cannot bring any electronic devices. Now I know why? It's not that you might accidentally record what someone says, it's because you might record what someone does.
    .
    .
The sitting speaker, a man who looks a little like Bob Menendez but with darker hair and no glasses, was farting, picking his nose and at one point grossed out the whole gallery when he picked his ears, looked at his finger contents, rolled it up into little earwax balls and tossed them to the floor.
    .
    .
I said to my kids that this man was a disgrace to the country.
    .
    .
What a tool, to do that when over 100 people were watching him. I guess he just doesn't care. God, what a disgusting pig he was. They don't want electronics in there so that his nastiness won't go out on YouTube.

Really, Mario, do you want a drug that numbs the central nervous system and turns people into ambitionless, ignorant zombies to be legal and available to our children? How about growing up and not crying about something that you can't have. This shit is poison, it hurts people and it should remain illegal. How about promoting healthy things that are good for your body and prolong life? Every straight-thinking adult agrees. The fact that colossal retard Barney "Gay Brothel" Frank is spending time on this when we have much more pressing issues in this country like inflation brought on by high fuel costs shows what totally fucked up morons we have running our government, people who do the opposite of what's best for the people.

Re: elle says: "Weed is a gateway drug & it impairs your judgment."

Weed as a gateway drug is a bogus argument. There is something called personal responsibility for one and two marijuana is psychologically addictive not physically addictive meaning no physical withdrawal which would make it that much harder to kick. Psychological addiction means you just have to make up your mind that you don't need or have to have the stuff to cope, exist, etc. Alcohol impairs judgement too but it's still legal. I'd say that alcohol is even more dangererous than weed.

  47. Quinn says – reply to this

    147

Marijuana should not be legalized it should be decriminalized. If it is legalized then the government can tax it and we don't need another tax just like we don't need to trust the government with anymore repsonsibilities. The government can scarcely take care of the responsibilities it has now. Do you really want to trust the government with more?

Re: Natal – so why add to the list of the things wrong with this world? two wrongs dont make a right. also, i agree whole heartedly with everything that person said, and that is why i "rode" on that persons comment… i do have tons of statistics about how marijuana negatively affects society and personal health. i know the truth, you know the truth, but you and everyone else are hiding from it.
and if you can give me factual, statistical information to make me change my mind i might reconsider. however, saying that marijuana is not addictive is not true. saying that no deaths occur because of marijuana use is not true. saying that marijuana is less harmful than cigarettes is untrue.
like someone said awhile back, we all know smoking kills but people still smoke, and they for damn sure dont want to hear about how its killing them.

    Re: Alex

Why would you want to trust the government to "monitor" sales? If it is decriminalized you can just grow yo own and smoke yo own. I don't want it sold in stores where kids can buy it(they can still buy cigarettes as they have their ways to get them). If marijuana is legalized then it's essentially the government endorsing it and promoting it. Marijuana is still not healthy for an individual and so no one should be actively promoting use of it to children. It's still healthiest to be 100% alcohol, cigarette and drug free.

Why should I have to pay for the healthcare of someone who chooses of his own free will to engage in unhealthy lifestyles such as: morbid obesity, sexual promiscuity, drug or alcohol abuse? These people would have to be covered if the government forces socialized healthcare on us. Do you even understand how expensive that would get? Fuck that. Pay for your own health insurance. Healthcare is expensive now because the government is already involved with it via Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Not to mention all the doctors defrauding the government by overcharging for services because they know the government or the taxpayer is picking up the tab.

FACT: My friend (a successful nurse) who uses marijuana was pulled over when she was carrying it, went to jail and now she must pay thousands of $$ in legal fees for an very uncriminalized offense. This is not what the system should focus on.

If you've read my past posts…I am not in denial. I am very intellegent and competent. You may have all the "scientific proof" of the negative effects of marijuana just as you may conjure up the negative effects of trans fats and alcohol but the use of such is the deciding factor here. If you're a depressed bump who has trouble getting off the couch then marijuana is not for you as fatty foods and "Judge Judy" aren't. do you really think there's that many strong and upstanding citizens out there benefitting society positively while they are high? not likely. most likely working class families or kids coming from them with low self-esteem and self worth who cant break the vicious cycle and get out of it. these are the people that are leaving comments on this blog for legalization of this drug.

you are worthless when you are high!
trust me, i used to smoke cigarettes, ive tried my hand at weed more than half a dozen times, i drink alcohol responsibly… i know first-hand the effects of all of them. and judging by what i went through and what friends around me went through, marijuana should definitely not be made legal…. way too many people dropping like flies left and right, out of school, out of college, getting kicked out of both, people die?? ten-fold to results of alcohol. maybe im just lucky i dont have the same amount of ppl in my life affected that way by alcohol.
im sorry but thats totally selfish to legalize for rec use.

On July 28, 2007, British medical journal The Lancet published a study that indicates that cannabis users have, on average, a 41% greater risk of developing psychosis than non-users. The risk was most pronounced in cases with an existing risk of psychotic disorder, and was said to grow up to 200% for the most-frequent users.[21] Other studies have revealed similar associations,

    Hippie dream, modern nightmare

It epitomised the hippie dream of free love and easy living in the Sixties. Songs, films and books mythologised it. But with the advent of powerful new strains such as skunk, cannabis is increasingly associated with feral youth, psychosis and violent crime. As the government prepares to reclassify the drug, is its decision borne of good science or political opportunism?

Re: no – If you read about the actual study behind that latest reefer-madness scare that said marijuana causes schitzophrenia, you'll learn that the study - which tested 45 people, ahem - actually showed that some language patterns in schitzophrenics are similar to language patterns in stoners. Sometimes. And the irresponsible alcoholics started screaming from the newspapers, "OMG WEED CAUSES SCHITZOPHRENIA." Now, I know you can read, "no," why aren't you doing it? Or, if you did already know about the circumstances of that study, why are you perpetuating the lie here?

I'm generally quite open to different views on most other matters - however not this. Cannabis has destroyed so many young lives caused untold irrevocable life long psychiatric damage in a significant proportion of users worldwide.. if the government are going to legalize to free up resources they need to ensure the type of recreational strains commercially available are age restricted and not potent as well as additionally making the well chronicled side effects widely known so people can make informed decisions if they want to use it.
It's a dreadful drug though that people have skewed views on because of the hippie peace and love associations
    It should remain illegal.

Re: nah – Sorry to snap you out of your dream but the weirdos you see in Amsterdam are normally the tourists or "artistic" foreigners. As a Dutch I can say that we barely smoke weed, or not at all, just because we are allowed. (Ever thought about that?) What actually bothers the Dutch is that most of the hard drugs produced in Holland is for the American market. Still we're the druggies of the world, though are country is one of the richest, safest and open-minded countries in the world.

They really should legalize it, if people want to smoke pot they should be allowed. Personally I don't see why alcohol is legal and pot isnt… but thats just me.

An indicator that all the smokers that actually think what we smoke (pot) should be completely legal know that pot isn't "harmless" and "not a drug" — WHY DO YOU KEEP SAYING "well it's not as bad as alcohol" … saying that just shows that you know deep down inside that it is still bad. If it were harmless you would not need to compare it to alcohol (a harmful drug when abused) because it would mean you have scientific data that shows it's harmless… you're just showing that it should not just be discarded as "harmless" because you are acknowledging that a harmful drug (alcohol) is comparable at all to it (pot).

Re: no – I'm sure NO goes home everyday & knocks back a glass of brandy or two. People can be so ignorant because of their fears. Honestly….I'm not saying that there is some truth in what you say. But REALY!!! Out of every 10 people that smoke pot, how many of them are going to go insane or develop some illness from it? If at best….1. And that's pushing it. I've been around pot for 16 yrs & have a lot of friends, who I might add are in very good professions including myself, who have never been diagnosed with any mental illness or for that matter, have THEY known anyone who has never developed it either. Don't spread lies on which you know NOTHING about!

Re: Shopg – I know that you barely smoke as a whole, but a) tons of your coffeeshops are for locals b) many/most of the weirdos speak dutch so I assume (i feel it is a fair assumption, don't you?) that a lot of these rastafari and people dressed weird and with disgusting, "statement" haircuts immigrated because holland is a SAFEHAVEN for them. It doesn't matter if people, perhaps people like yourself who don't smoke and the people that make up the 16 million population of holland don't smoke; there are 40,000 AMERICANS LIVING in AMSTERDAM, a city just short of 750,000. Did YOU ever think about that? It is definitely a safe, prosperous country (as i mentioned in the post you attacked) but as a bi-product of having the right to smoke and buy up to 5 grams at a time legally etc., and having thousands of coffeeshops across holland, you are ASKING for these unwanted tourists/immigrants to move in. — part 1

I understand as a proud Dutchman you will defend your country to the grave and that is normal, but don't deny that you guys have a serious problem with drug tourists and immigrants who came looking for a place to smoke pot. As for the "open-minded" comment; i live in France, not America, so don't assume I'm a "dumb American". I love Holland, it is in an economic boom, the people there are very nice and I have nothin bad to say really except what I have said in this post, so do not get on the defensive. Sarkozy is a prick and the Muslim immigrants in France are a thorn in our side - see? It's ok to poke fun at your own country, no one is perfect.

    Re: noooo
Like I said before…you never know and probably will never know who smokes in the professional world. By the way, the real estate business is my husband's and needless to say, he doesn't smoke as much as I do because once again, we're responsible. All I do is go to school and be his muse, so yes, I can hit up the maryjane whenever I want. He hasn't graduated college because his upbringing wasn't geared that way just as mine was'nt. So you want to talk about growing up in a shitty family and a vicious cycle, well, we were destined to fail in our lives, but both of us worked hard to get out of that cycle. He'll be going to school, just for the degree, after I finish school. You must've stayed up late last night trying to figure out how to hate, eh? Well it's early in the AM and I need to get to class but I had fun chattin' with you. Regardless of all that was said…don't you think that maybe an age min. and amount of marijuana carried could be regulated so that people like my nurse friend won't be criminalized for their responsible use of it? By the way, I don't drink at all. I'm just a smoker whose got her shit together.

Re: lucie – You're lucky , my best friend when i was 19 went from happy bright and extremely sociable to introverted depressed and suicidal when he started to smoke weed recreationally .I will cut to the chase and tell you he was found by his mother dead hanging from a rafter in his garage at the age of 21 after prolonged frequent smoking of the drug. I'm sharing MY TRUTH WITH YOU in a hope you'll realize weed is not a harmless hippy drug .The damage it causes is very real . it's probably a worse drug than all of the others combined in fact because people enter into using it believing it's harmless and wrongly think the worst thing it'll do is make them a bit giggly and slow..and ultimately not suicidal or worse.

Re: nah – I get your point, you did not get mine. What I imply to say is that our very reasonable attitude towards cannabis resulted in a lot of very good things. Yes, being the only country brave enough to stand up and acknowledge they allow use of cannabis also had a very negative impact. You say we have a serious problem with tourists, I think that's an understatement but also know that it can be resolved if other governments would pull their head out of the sand and legalize it in their own country. (what is worse, legalizing guns or cannabis?) Holland would be relieved from a lot of drugs tourism and the people who see us as a safe haven won't have to. Stating we're open-minded does not mean Americans are dumb, that's what you make out of it. Dutch in general, including myself, love Americans!

#100 is right. It's all about the lobbyists.

Rep. Frank is also right. In West Hollywood, they do raids on medical marijuana centers. Not only is this cruel and monstrous and hypocritical, but it is a huge waste of county and law enforcement resources - esp. in a budget crisis, esp. when you can't get a cop to help for real crimes.
