YO! I think that things aren't taken WAY too seriously round here. Come on now, he is saying people should be punished for their actions. Lynching wasn't just for the black people. What about Pirates???? I think my great great grand father was a pirate, wow now I am offfended! Give it a rest………

Country singing is story telling, and Keith does that here. He's not out leading a posse in real life. He feels a need to try to balance the scales using his music as an art medium. It promotes discussion, but rather than focus on what a redneck sherriff he isn't, focus on the relevent discussion he is promoting regarding instilling decent societal values into our children, as is a parent's job, so good folks can sleep at night in relative peace. Those of you condemning Keith sound like more of a lynch crowd than he does! Calm, thinking heads should prevail.

    Re: Missy

Suck up stupid ass bitch. You sound as dumb as Perez. The song is old as hell first of all. Secondly, Willie Nelson actually sings the part about "hanging the people who are committing crimes.

Just another sign of political correctness going overboard. If anybody could be lynched, I wish it was Perez Hilton and all of his idiot suck up followers.

  4. weste says – reply to this

    204

Toby Keith's song is NOT RACIST! It is about the old West where they hung people (any race) for crimes especially stealing - watch some old westerns!

  5. Kat says – reply to this

    205

oh please!!! This is rediculous..he could be talking about bad 'white' people. My Lord everyone is so quick to jump to conclusions he wasn't talking about 'lynching'! Grow up and get a f*ckin hobby!

  6. jense says – reply to this

    206

    More lynching…less crime!
that's why people were able to leave their doors unlocked at night!
We should get back to that way of punishment!
    hang 'em all!

    207

I think that anybody that tries to twist this song into a racial/homophobic thing are idiots. Unbelievable… This song may take something that is lawless that used to be used for enforcing the law of the land in the past (murders and thieves), but has no racial overtones. Some liberals go way to far and look like morons. No–I am not making this a political statement either! People use common sense!!!

  8. siste says – reply to this

    208

Maybe if we still did things like that we wouldnt have so much crime in the streets. Go Willie and Toby!!

  9. DUMB says – reply to this

    209

Aww, geez. You are so stupid sometimes, Perez. Everyone knows if you steal someone's horse/cattle, you hang 'em high. His song is not about lynching…that's wrong and based on prejudice. It's a cowboy thing. Stop stirring the HATE stew. Just think once in awhile. Is that too much to ask?!?!?!?

  10. Tania says – reply to this

    210

I guess you have used your power for good. Thanks to you a lot of people are listening to Toby Keith again. You're bringing Toby back! Way to go, girl!

  11. becky says – reply to this

    211

This was a number one hit for Toby a few albums back. He wrote the song with Willie Nelson who actually sings the verse about hanging in the tree. It's a reference to history, not a racial comment. Toby laughs his way all the way to the bank when you comment like this. He's not an idiot, rather a very smart businessman. One of this album's is White Trash with Money which was named because someone called his daughter White Trash and he decided to make money off the comment. Perez, you missed the boat on this one.

  12. Lct00 says – reply to this

    212

That article is complete bullshit!! I watched the video and the author of the article is a complete ignorant jackass!!

  13. Liz says – reply to this

    213

He never said anything about race you dumb fuck! You are just creating even more racism in society.

  14. wynn says – reply to this

    214

Good LORD Perez. Is it OK to have a #1 movie about a vigilantie who takes criminal matters into their own hands (batman…put that there because you're probably too dumb to know)? But then it's not OK for a redneck to talk about it because it may be racist. Seriously. Who is the idiot here
    Get
    A
    Clue
    Fatboy

  15. 215

Sigh….the good old days. Toby Keith is a douche and new country music sucks. But I agree with the lyrics times ten.

  16. karen says – reply to this

    216

sorry, don't agree with you on this one. I agree totally with Toby on this one. It has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with people not caring about any crime that they commit, b/c it will be a total slap on the wrist. From stealing to manslaughter, people get no time anymore. Maybe if they knew that by doing these things, they could actually *gasp* be punished for it, maybe these jerks wouldn't be doing bad things. Take a look at Baltimore or Detroit or any city with a high crime rate…and if you live near it ( like I do just outside of B-more) then tell me that jail time is a deterrant for these criminals. Nothing about race….about crime.

  17. stop says – reply to this

    217

I'm not sorry to say I think Toby Keith is a hero! Maybe if we put the murderers and rapist and molesters on ropes and hung them, we'd have less of them. As it is, they get to go on vacation, and have 3 hot meals a day, recreation, entertainment and all the ass they want as long as they milk family members into sending them money. I don't care if you are white, black, latino, or a mix of any or all, a criminal is a criminal, lets stop babying them and make them pay!!!!

    219

Perez I normally love you, but I have to say you're an idiot here! This song is being taken way out of context. It has been out for YEARS and was recorded around the same time as 9/11. I find it pretty rediculous that its just now becoming "controversial" when for the past 5 years no one has had a problem with it.

Get over it, this is an old song and for the record Willie Nelson sings in the original version of the song. I bet if they went back to those ways there would be a lot less crime.

  23. Jen says – reply to this

    223

Perez - you're an idiot! First of all, this song is atleast 5 years old. Secondly, if you ever listened to the rest of Toby's music, you would realize that he is a Democrat through and through. He supports the troops, not the war. I'll send him your love in 2 weeks when I go see him on tour - my 8th show in 5 years.

I love you Perez, but you couldn't be more WRONG on this. The song is NOT racist in any way, shape, or form. He is singing about ANYONE who commits crimes. It just so happens that the people that most often commit those crimes are black. I know because I live in a small urban town in Ohio where half our city are doing drive-by's all night long. Guess what color those guys doing the shooting are??? Black.

LETS LET ALL THE KILLERS AND RAPISTS GET OFF SCOT FREE…
UNLESS OF COURSE THEY KILL A HOMOSEXUAL…THEN THEY SHOULD BE KILLED?????? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? CRIMINALS LOSE CERTAIN RIGHTS AFTER BEING CONVICTED OF THEIR CRIMES. THEY LOSE RIGHTS AFTER BEING INHUMANE…CRIMES ARE CRIMES FOR A REASON.

Your an idiot it is a song. You cant assume it's racial. Also you pick on a 15 year girl (miley). You obviously forgot how 15 year olds act back in high school yourself included.

  39. SS says – reply to this

    239

Wow, way to be cutting edge here - this song is 6 years old at least. In all these years, I never thought of lynching blacks. I thought of cowboys lynching the bad guys, you know, the ones that stole cattle, robbed saloons and the like. Everything in this world is up for interpretation, too bad people have to be so darn sensitive and think that the finger is pointing at them.

  40. Jessi says – reply to this

    240

The story on that video is completely wrong and irresponsible. It incorrectly perpetuates a horrible form of racism that while may exist in some bad people's hearts and minds certainly does not exist in this video. This guy looks like a fool for this story. The black man he references is not even the criminal he is being questioned about the criminal as a potential witness just like the WHITE FEMALE HOOKERS are. The criminal is a WHITE guy so lets get real and not stir sh!t up for no reason.

  43. Conch says – reply to this

    243

Perez, you are an idiot. I enjoy your site or I would not be here but sometimes I swear you look for things to sensationalize. Toby's song is about the Old West in essence how they use to hang people for doing things wrong for running wild in the streets and breaking the law. I love Toby because he is who he is and I guarantee you will not get him kissing ass and apologizing because someone read some nonsense into his song. If you want to start looking into what everyone says and done then lets start putting some rap lyrics online and tearing them apart. Go Toby!! Toby has been going to the troops for years and not just for photo ops like Obama!

  51. 251

This is rediculous. THIS SONG IS OLD NEWS AND IT IS JUST A SONG.

Yes, stuff like that really happened in the old west, GET OVER IT THIS IS 2008 PEOPLE. DAH.

    IDIOTS.

Anyone who buys into this rediculous trick at attention - your an idiot too.

Keith and his fans would've LOVED to lynch the Dixie Chicks after they had the nerve to criticize Dubya. They received numerous death threats thanks to assholes like Keith who make money inciting stupid rednecks.
Anyone nostalgic for mob justice is a fool! Lots of innocent people died horrible deaths that way. It's no different from stoning, necklacing or hacking someone to death.

Re: Rope – eye for an eye- I love it.

I know there's been a few people to post the same thing, but this song is so old. I'm a huge Toby fan, and for him to get flack for this is absolutley ludicris…but why hasn't anyone said anything about the fact that Willie Nelson, a country great, and a legend, is the one that sings the verse that ya'll are getting so heated about?

  58. Miss says – reply to this

    258

No, all of you who down people for WHATEVER they say are idiots. We do still have freedom of speech & people should be allowed to have their own thoughts. We have too many f'ed up pussies running this country and maybe if we did have punishments like that, we'd have less crime. Other countries have "chop-chop" squares where they cut off hands for stealing, etc., and they don't have the crime like we have here. It's sad to say, but America has gone to hell in a handbasket thanks to greedy politicians & all of the special interest groups. And I can say that b/c I served this country and it's extremely sad that I can't even be proud of it anymore…

  59. redro says – reply to this

    259

I never could stand that rediculous Bush loving cocksucker. Now he has just crossed the line and you know a bunch of his "sheeple" will love the song, especially with it's depictions of Mexicans and Blacks. What an absolute shame in this day and age.

  60. Melis says – reply to this

    260

The reporter that wrote that is a hate fueling idiot. There is no conotation of racism in that entire song. That guy is reading into something that isn't there and fueling the fire. Alot of people were hung back in the old west days and most of them in that time were white. All the song is trying to say is that maybe if we dealt with crime with an iron fist and consistency, then maybe that would persuade some many to stop committing crimes. I'm so sick of this crap. Sounds to me like the people that are fueling racism are the ones that are "supposedly" anti racist. There are more important racial issues at hand than trying to pick apart someone's song because hey are country and it said hanging! Give me a break. A NON Racist Southerner, Melissa.

  61. Bree says – reply to this

    263

Dear Perez, You are an idiot.

Willie Nelson sang that song with him and the lynching wasn't only for black people. Mobs lynched alot of thugs and gangsters, white ones you dumbass.

  64. wedon says – reply to this

    264

This song does not target any race. But history tells us the majority of blacks need something to whine about. Something to distract them from taking responsibility for their own actions and failures.

Why is it when ghetto negro rappers release material glorifying acts of domestic terrorism and racism, well, then it is just entertainment.

And seriously, did you expect anything less from these slack-jawed yokels? They have been pumping out regurgitated 80s pop rock formulas with hillbilly overtones for over 20 years now and their subscriber base is none the wiser.

Look at any recent CMT video .. then compare it to.. say a Poison or Bon-jovi video. Fu*king dumb mouth-breathers are being sold the same old song and dance but are too busy watching Nascar while beating their wives to notice.

  66. Krist says – reply to this

    266

The funny thing is that this song has been on the radio for a while now and this is the first we have heard of any problems? I mean come on there are other songs that talk about bitches and fucking people and blah blah blah! Get over it! It might be affective if the problem occurred when the song was first released but it is long past that!

  67. Mindy says – reply to this

    267

I think this is being streched a little too far. 'gangstars' is such a general term these days that applies to a wide range of individuals. It's just too bad he didn't use the word ruffians… it really would have been the exact same. I believe the elected vernacular was chosen to imbibe a distinctly modern verses past feel… I mean it's redundant to say that b/c it's so damn obvious but it seems like it has to be pointed out cause yall are bitching about nothing!

  68. Kendr says – reply to this

    268

I LOVE THIS SONG! It isn't geared towards a certain race… it's geared towards bad, horrible people who deserve to be hung, shot, killed in anyway equal to their crime…. EYE FOR AN EYE!!!! Get over it… Toby is AWESOME!

  69. ashuh says – reply to this

    269

Perez, you are an IDIOT. In no point of that song was anything mentioned about RACE. You are making a big deal out of nothing. Get over yourself your majesty.

    270

I can't figure out how it's Toby Keith fault that everything in his song is true. I am quite sure he himself has not hanged anyone. The things he says in his song are true. There is crime in the streets… shootings every day… it's so stupid of ya'll to jump on this bandwagaon. He just wrote a song. What about all the stupid rap songs…. they talk about shootings and killing the po-po. If you're going to get mad at Keith you can be mad at them too.

    272

Umm. YOU'RE the idiot. The song has nothing to do with race or hanging black people. It's about being harder on criminals and handing out stiffer penalties rather than the pansy ass sentences people get today.

Re: Ben – Ben… YOU ARE GENIUS! These are great explanations and my thoughts exactly… I'm just too busy to write them all out! Thank you!

    274

to all the fools definding keith– have you read your history books? the simple fact that toby is using the word LYNCHING in a positive tone is extremely racist and outrageous, because fifty years ago in the south it was predominatly black people being lynched. get it? that's racist!! really racist! read the whole article, the writer explains it in very simple terms, and it's pretty obvious– if you don't agree you're clearly a bigot.

  75. Rhond says – reply to this

    275

Re: FReal – that's the truth "FReal"

  76. 276

This is RIDICULOUS! This is just another example of people reading too far into things and looking for reasons to be upset and offended. For anyone who watches old westerns, hanging is a pretty typical theme. Nowhere in "Beer for My Horses" does it say ANYTHING racial at all. The song doesn't say anything about hanging black people specifically, it says "bad boys" as in criminals who have done something wrong. Additionally, I highly doubt that Toby Keith with attach himself to something that is blatantly racist. He may be a "Good Ol' Boy" from the South (Nothing wrong with that!!) but that doesn't mean that maintains racist opinions from decades ago.

  77. Jane says – reply to this

    277

In the real song, Willie Nelson sings that part. I really dont think it has anything to do with White Supremacy, they lynched criminals in the days prior to the guillotine. As much as I love Willie, I think a song advocating the use of vigilante justice in the form of hangings is just in poor taste. We dont live in the wild west anymore. We have systems in place for such things. Maybe if Mr. Keith feels these systems are inadequate, perhaps he should get up off his butt and do more about it than just sing about it. Ugh.

  78. Letha says – reply to this

    278

I say lynch everyone in the US except for me. Then I can just walk through people's houses and rifle through their sh*t. By the way Perez… are you still fat?? Because that offends me more than anything.. Obesity.

  79. Steph says – reply to this

    279

If you are offended by Toby Keith choice of words in his songs. Maybe we should re-examine our entire culture. From metal heads singing about drugs and hating authority to rappers rapping about killing cops and disrespecting women, not to mention the drugs they rap about. If Toby Keith offends you then you don't listen to any kind of music, except maybe gospel. Stick your head back in the sand from whence it came and shut the fuck up!!!

  80. Stale says – reply to this

    280

Ok really…the song is about the wild west not plantation times….its not being racial about blacks or any race. Its about back when in the wild west sheriffs and law enforcement would punish outlaws by hanging not lynching(which is usually used to represent hanging a black person)…many outlaws who were hanged white or sadly native americans….not black. I mean come on at least read a history book or watch a western film. If you wanna say he is racist at least say he racist against native americans. Which I believe he's NOT!

  81. Kate says – reply to this

    281

oh good grief, toby keith is just calling for harsher punishment for criminals and doing what our judicial system fails to do. i don't see how this has anything to do with race, unless you think by gangsters he means black people, which would then make you the racist. gangster is a type of person, it originated with white 'mobsters.' what the hell is the problem with punishing a criminal?

  82. jess says – reply to this

    282

Okay. First, this song is how old? Second I don't think it is in any way meant to be racist white people we're hung also. Third get a life!!!! Was there nothing else to write about?

  83. paige says – reply to this

    283

People, get over it and find something better to do with your time. Maybe if our world today was a little more like the one back in the day, it would be a better place. Instead, all the reverse racism is going on and I can't stand it. Find all the rap songs that have something negative said about white people and post them up as "racist." People should listen to Toby Keith's message in the song instead of jumping on the bandwagon of racist white country music singers….

  84. k says – reply to this

    284

to all those who say it isn't about racism, just about vigilante justice, or wanting justice for criminals…well, you can't talk about lynching and its history in a song without it inherently being about america's history of racism.

though, it is possible that toby keith is just so stupid that he can't connect that lynching and racism — he probably didn't get that that symbol means hate and racism.

    and symbols count in songwriting.

morgan Freeman says it best , if people would stop talking about racisim we would have none , can you forget the color of the man and think beyond that , if he never hired an actor of color for hes video you would scream about that .

Dear Perez, YOU'RE the Idiot. First off this song is hella old…why are people just now realizing what this is about? And I for one think it is true. If we killed all the people that kill, rape, molest, attack, or hurt other people than perhaps criminals would think twice before they commit their crimes.

Although I may not agree with the message that's in this song, it has been a rather popular song for Toby Keith for many YEARS on country radio. This song is played in the North, the South, the East and the West and no one, until now, has decided to complain about the message. I would think that if this song was as offensive or anything of the sorts that people would have been having a FIT about it right when it came out. This song is talking about the Old West… not the South. He's also talking about a lack of punishment in todays society for some things, and that if we went back to the Old West way of handling things that we'd be in a better position. I'm sure that people of all races lived in the Old West, it's not aimed at just one ethnic group. I think people just need to let it go…. it's just a song!

Ditto Ross, Toby is not racist and our society does need to be harder on criminals! That is his message!!! Get over your liberal selves!

    Perez,

You're the idiot. People of all races have been punished by hanging for misdeeds. Racing to make it racial is narrow minded on your part. Much is the case for books, tv and other forms of entertainment, this song is fiction and is not meant to stir racial tensions but to provide enjoyment for the masses. Grow up!

  92. 292

you are stupid watch the music video..Toby rocks and he cant be a racist with a name like "TOBY"RIGHT.

You're all idiots. Black people can sing about killing cops but Toby kieth and Willy Nelson can't sing about lynching criminals? Besides, get off the bandwagon this song has been around for a couple of years.

African-Americans and gays always perceive that everyone is persecuting them. They always "infer" that everyone is talking about them or even cares. Sounds like someone thinks the world revolves around them. Can you say, "Narcissism?" Ridiculous that Toby Keith is talking about hanging blacks. It's clear in his video that he's talking about all criminals; not just black criminals.

  96. 296

Team Toby. He didn't say, "hey go kill some m'f'ing black/mexican/homos." He said that we should hang some criminals. And maybe we should!

First of all the song has been out for years, so way to be on top of these things. Secondly, back in the day of "Grandpappy" hanging and lynching was a common practice, not just against black people, but all criminals. the roots and history of country music is often based on life before our modern society's time. Get a grip people. you could read stories of the same damn thing in a history book.

I wish we could lynch almost all of the US except for like 100 people and me. Then we could all go around to people's houses and rifle through their shit. Something about looking through people's stuff gives me a puckered asshole, and I like that. By the way Perez, don't quit that diet yet because your still all so very gelatinous!!

    Toby Keith for Prez 08'
