Re: Dani – I don't think Perez realizes this… but after 9/11 Toby came out with a song entitled "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue"… are you going to crucify that song too, ya dick?!?!

I wasn't aware any of these were exclusive to black people, or any race for that matter. Hangings and lynchings were used to kill outlaws of any color in the old days and is still used as a form of the death sentence in some even now. Just because I say set something on fire, does it mean I am talking about Jews? NO! It's the crime not the color he is talking about.
    ——————————————————————————————
We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
too much corruption and crime in the streets
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down
You can bet he'll set 'em down…
    ————————————————————————————–
Wasn't aware being a gangster and corruption was also exclusive to blacks. Someone better tell the Triad, Mafia, and other ethnic gangs that. People are reaching for something that is not there. At worst, it would be tongue in cheek which I doubt. But you people act like he is talking about blacks or any race for that matter and he isn't. These crimes or types of people emcompass alot of races.

I just watched the video and it doesn't seem racist to me at all. The character of Willie Nelson seemed to be from Arizona, not the South and the bad guy in the video was white, not black. I think people are reading WAY too much into a song, as usual. It was kind of a really cool video and not offensive to me at all.

Get over it you liberal Assholes, its just a song!
The song does have a great message!

Love ya perez, but you are wrong on this one…If you actually watch the video and listen to the lyrics there is no mention of race whatso ever.In the video its back in the late 1800's early 1900's when horse thieving was big and thats how they paid was being strung up..look into the facts b4 spewing.

Colbert is an idiot for letting him on the show and not calling him out for his racism.

Colbert the man who had the balls to challenge the President but can't confront Toby Keith?

What a surprise! A so-called "country Christian" is really a rednecked, racist, violence mongering hypocrite? Who would have thought?

  9. oak says – reply to this

    309

this song is about 6 years old and its referring to how justice was done in the old west. it has no mention of race or hate except hate for criminals.

  10. freed says – reply to this

    310

    Re: Miss
i agree 2…f*ckin relax its a country song. if we broke down the lyrics to any country song by a hardcore southern man (lynyrd skynyrd??) we'd find that sort of thing…c'mon!!!

  11. Perez says – reply to this

    311

Perez you are so stupid!! So what if he talks about hanging people who do bad things….why do you have to make it into a race thing. Gangster doesn't just mean "black" he is talking about people who commit evil crimes and them getting what they deserve.

  12. Chris says – reply to this

    312

How many years old is this song?? Seriously.

  13. youpe says – reply to this

    313

Jesus. Get over it! I can't stand Toby Keith either, but he's obviously referencing "old times justice". The "racist" thing is so annoying. Slavery, lynching, torture, crucifixion, etc. has been around since the dawn of man. Why do have to revisit what our friggin american ANCESTORS did and live through like it's somehow still affecting us. Why don't all the Christians claim persection from biblical days. I'm so tired of everyone being a fucking victim. Get over your crybaby bull shit, and live your own fucking life as a decent human being. I can't stand scummy people from any ethnicity. All the bad motherfuckers should be hung!

did you watch the video, they went through mexicans for their perp and then some blacks pissing on the street. they set up and lynched a WHITE guy.
not racial and the white guy was killing white prostitutes. get a grip on reality dude

  15. Leah says – reply to this

    315

OMG you guys are retarted its a song…he didnt write it..he sang it…there are a zillion songs out there with bad messages in them…people still sing them, dance to them, and support their singers, doesn't mean you agree with what they say…they have a good beat…ITS JUST A SONG…its talking about history and how themes from history still appear today…

  16. Steph says – reply to this

    316

Re: Ben – That post took the words right out of my mouth.

Perez, I'm ashamed at you for jumping to the conclusions that everyone else did. I'm sure I can go through and find a hundred other songs that WERE racially tinged against WHITE people, but you know, that's okay, because we don't want to step on anyone's toes and tell them that's wrong. Toby Keith wrote a song that had no racial connotation and he gets shit about it because he's a white man.

Besides, there were comments in the article about how the "villian" is played by a Mexican. Oh no, it's racial again! Someone cite the movies with villains from the last year, and you'll find them to be black, white, blue, green, red, etc etc. Other movies are more gruesome, but apparently because a lot of african americans were hanged, you should never ever, ever, ever (!) have a movie that ever hangs anyone (shame on you Sixth Sense for showing that scene–let's all get outraged about that too!). The flipping movie doesn't even have a BLACK VILLAIN!

Get over yourselves. And sorry about bad spelling.

    317

first.. let me start out saying.. yes, i'm a redneck. i'm from the south, and love country music. this song has been out for a while now, and you're just now wanting to say something about it. i don't think toby was trying to be racist at all.. just telling the truth.. we have too much crime on the streets. and they should do like they did back in the day.. too many people are getting way with stuff, or sitting on death row, while the family of the victim is greiving.. i see nothing racist at all.. just a man tired of all the crime in this world.. and everyone turning the other way to let it happen…

  18. chill says – reply to this

    318

The song is being completley over-thought. While he does refer to past events, at no point in the lyrics does he suggest to a certain race. There is abolutely nothing to base this theory upon; it is merely a witch hunt.

  19. Danie says – reply to this

    319

Let me start by saying that this song has been out for years and its not until now that someone has an issue with it. I have to say that anyone who is a fan of country music knows that 99% of it is put out there to make people feel good and/or have fun. Toby Keith is an amazing artist and puts on an excellent show, I've seen him in concert 3 times and will be going again in a few weeks. There are countless songs put out on a daily basis by "artists" who can't even sing live or don't even know what it means to be a true musician but feel that they can talk about killing people, raping women, degrading woman or certain races and nothing is said about it. I have been singing "Beer for my Horses" for years now and have never once went out and harmed another human being because of it. In fact, I have friends of every race that listen to Toby and are not offended. People in America need to stop taking offense so damn easily. Its a song that was meant to be fun, the title isn't "Let's go lynch someone". If American's spent more time enjoying their lives and less time bitching about stupid things then we would be a much happier country.

  20. Curti says – reply to this

    320

Politically correct douches. The song even states that it is his grandfather telling about what they used to do when people were committing crimes, not what they would do when people were a different race.

Unless you believe all crime and evil deeds are done by non-caucasians, then this song is not remotely racist.

    322

It's kind of ridiculous that this song is several years old and it's just NOW making waves. Theres always someone trying to stir the pot and make something out of nothing. It's a freaking (old) song!!

  23. genia says – reply to this

    323

Prez your reading too much into it. Think the wild west.

  24. Eliza says – reply to this

    324

Sensitive, sensitive. I love the liberal view on ANYTHING, but the freaking victims of actual crime. Let's feel sorry for everyone except the actual victim of a robbery/gun crime/car jacking. It is just SO sad that the criminal had a bad life as a kid. Breaks my heart….it really does. Ha!

Hilarious, really. Perez can call a young Miley Cyrus a slut repeatedly based on media speculation on the young girl, yet asks for donations for cleft palates or what have you. Perez is so full of self loathing and hate for himself, that he can't even remain consistent. He attacks reality stars and young stars, b/c they are less experienced. The only "celebs" he actually supports are older women and gays…..and deep down he knows that any celeb that actually acknowledges him is simply trying to keep from being bashed on his pathetic site.

It is going to be SO freaking funny when he is a wahsed up D-Lister on "Where are they now?" I can't wait. Enjoy your 15 Minutes you fat loser! And he knows from experience that a new and better site/gossip "queen" will replace him and that all of "us" will still be reading, while not giving two shits about him. Karma really IS a bitch…….

  25. miche says – reply to this

    325

Perez, I'm surprised you would even quote ANYTHING by the huggington post. She is the idiot.
The song is so not racist. Plus, it's OLD! Get over it. I saw Willie Nelson sing it about 5 YEARS ago. It is about the old west. Not necessarily the south. People will read into it what they want. You are too current for this junk.

P - if you want to take this literally and try to make it racist, what about rap music and all the talk about killin' whitey, beatin ho's, stealin, fightin', bustin' a cap in the fag's ass, etc. I haven't seen you stand up against that. But that may be because you like the chocolate love stick jammed up your ass……

  28. Howar says – reply to this

    328

Perez, You are a moran. The song isn't about lynching blacks, it's about justice. Yes, vigilante justice, but it's song not a call for action. The article is trying to make something out of nothing.

  29. 329

Unfortunately Toby Keith is an idiot with a large fan base (at least where I'm from). FORTUNATELY Stephen Colbert is f-ing awesome and makes Toby squirm in his chair every time he's on his show. I don't care at all for TK, his music, or his horrible stance on the war. Let him sing his song, just be aware of what the GOVERNMENT is doing about justice. I think the pictures in that article say enough, we don't want to go back to that. Toby Keith is allowed creative license (as much as I don't want to defend that tard.)

Toby Keith and fans ought to move to Iran…they hang people from cranes in public squares over there! And of course, the condemned "criminals" are ALWAYS guilty! Good fun!

  33. Stefa says – reply to this

    333

Wow, another perez political post. Do you always have to jump on to these bandwagons? It really seems ridiculous to make an issue out of the song or video. Don't people have better things to do with their time? I mean c'mon, you can take any situation and spin it. As a matter of fact the bad guy in the video was WHITE! Did anyone else bother to look up the video and read the lyrics? It's not nearly as bad as the article makes it seem; they are spinning it big time. Freedome of speech needs to be considered and it's his opinion. I honestly believe he's being color blind in his video and song; focusing on all the crap in the world and how we as a country need to be tougher on our criminals instead of babying them. This is scary to see all these reactions for something so minor. It's not bigoted nor is it against any particular race. It's about the bad guys……sheesh.

Re: Kerry – Good for you, Kerry. I agree with your take; people are just ITCHING to read in some good ole tasty racism into by god *everything*. I am also in country radio. I don't enjoy Toby keith. In any respect. He bleats like a goat, and it makes me want to vomit. I often turn on the mic and bleat along with him. No one has complained yet.

  39. brook says – reply to this

    339

people wonder why our country is so racist? it's not because of the song. It's because of the people who interpret everything little thing that they can possibly to be racist. This is one of the dumbest things I've seen.

  40. lala says – reply to this

    340

it doesn't say shit about african amer. they hung people long ago of all colors for all crimes. get a grip douche and learn from the past stop dwelling on it, move on! responding to it only creates problems, turn it into a positive!

  41. Curt says – reply to this

    341

    Re: kate

Who gives a fuck if he was on the view? Jesus People! None of the crimes he mentioned were exclusive to being black, nor is being called a gangster. Last time I looked John Gotti was considered a Gangster. Tim McVey Blew Up A Building, etc. Being hung happened to most OUTLAWS in the old days. You know I get tired of someone doing this, yet blacks call each other N*****S and Gangsta! So now we can't say Gangster because we may offend someone? Go fuck yourself people. Its a sad world we live in. We can't even say Merry Christmas anymore without someone being offended. RIDICULOUS!

  42. Sgirl says – reply to this

    343

Perez, You are the idiot, he is not talking about race he is talking about people getting justice. This is a great song and I turn it up everytime it comes on. Get over it and move on.

  44. South says – reply to this

    344

His wording is not meant as anything racially brought out. It is a fact that in the past in the south people were hung, not just those of African American decent, but ALL. And if people think that by him stating that there are to many gangsters doing dirty deeds and to much crime and corruption in the streets….ITS TRUE. America is not safe, and the last time I checked "gangsters" is a crime orginazation that knows no ethnic boundries. Seriously PEREZ, people need to be more open minded than you and not just read what that want on your blog and then take that concept and run with it. He is also a person that has gone over seas how many times to support the troops? When was the last time your fat ass went any further than somewhere that would benefit you and only you? Do a background on the South and on the meaning of the lyrics before you want to post a blog.

    348

My ex-wife and her peeps are fans of Toby Keith, along with others of his ilk. Only part of the reason she became an ex 5 years ago; the other part being that I didn't want to end up lynched myself, as her peeps were itching for some bullshit reason to do so. Too bad Jim Jones isn't around to convince people like this to guzzle down some very special Kool-Aid.

  49. jill says – reply to this

    349

Perez, you are so wrong on this, this song was number 1 for six weeks, to bad if you don't like it. It is a great song and it is fools like you who keep feeding the racial fire. And as for the Dixie Chicks, I am glad he put those idiots in their place.

  50. Staci says – reply to this

    350

Give me a break, I usually enjoy your posts, but lets be real. This song has been out for years and there is even a video to go with it. NOT RACIAL AT ALL!!!!!!!!! And as far as the Dixie Chicks go….if they are so disheartened with the country and the way that it is run, I would happily pack their crap and they can move somewhere else….. They should leave behind all of the money that they made from record and concert sale in this country though!! Any by the way the DC's song Earl was about killing and abusive husband and hiding the body…..Is that ok?????

  51. betsy says – reply to this

    351

    Hey Perez
I LOVE your website but come on! First of all this song came out like 3 years ago!!! Secondly it is not a racial song by any means!!! I dont know how anyone could be offended by this song!?!?!?

  52. Vicki says – reply to this

    353

MAYBE, Stephan Colbert should have read the lyrics to the song before letting Toby Keith sing it on TV… The song has been in exsistance for quite some time, a duet between Toby Keith and Willie Nelson. Why be pissed off now for a song that was produced in 2006 ? O.o

  54. Bear says – reply to this

    354

What about the rappers with killing the police, and I hate white people? Where is that outrage? Toby Keith is right, there should be more punisment for the crimes.

  56. Angie says – reply to this

    356

The song is about the Texas Rangers back in the day, and it is not Toby Keiths granddaddy it is actually Willie Nelson singing that part in the song and he meant his granddaddy…and honestly if some of these criminals thought they may actually get punished instead of living off wking people while in jail, maybe crime would down a little.

  57. Sunny says – reply to this

    357

Toby Keith is a swaggering meat headed walrus who is ugly and hairy, uncouth, stupid, uneducated, and ignorant, eeeeewwww, why do people like him? GROSS.

  58. enuff says – reply to this

    358

It isn't a racial song. It speaks volumes about what should happen to people who sit on their ass and then steal from hard working people. It speaks about people having to answer for their actions. A couple of public hangings for rapist, murders and child molester would straighten these thugs out. Be they white or black. It's a damn song about responsiblity, it has nothing to do with race. GET OVER IT. So damn tired of everything being about race in this damn country. If you live like you should and believe in justice, then this damn song should not offend you. If it does, then you are probably a theif or are just looking for a hand out.

  59. kate says – reply to this

It is a country song that refers to the way EVERY criminal was punished in the wild west. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either stoopid or just looking for something to bitch about.

I am a huge country fan and have listened to this song many times and NEVER did the thought of racism cross my mind. But yet when I listen to some of that rap crap, I think what an idiot the person is singing about girls, offensive words, hookers, drugs, etc. This is just plain dumb.

    367

oh give me a break. this has got to be some of the most ridiculous liberal spin i have encountered in a while. this song has been around for years and not once have i thought of it as some sort of racist commentary. it is simply about how people today are too much of pansies to punish those who are deserving. the song obviously has nothing to do with kidnapping innocent black people and hanging them in trees. what idiots.

  68. SMH says – reply to this

    368

Note to Perez - most of your readers are white! They could care less! Their relatives did some of those horrible, gruesome things. I can't believe white people can actually say "move on" if it were them they wouldn't be so quick to say that. That's why blacks in America are the way they are because of the evil white man. He is a country singer of course he is racist!

  69. jill says – reply to this

    369

give me a fucking break. He is singing about fact. People used to get lynched when they broke they law. It happened. Toby Keith himself himself is not going out and lynching people. & welcome to 2008. We have corruption, violence and crime everywhere. People are not punished for doing bad things and it has become the downfall of our society.
Liberal hippies who believe that murderers and rapists can be "rehabilitated" are just in denial and it is that denial that is ruining our country.

I guess that whole "freedom of speech" thing just doesn't apply anymore. People need to lighten the fuck up.

  70. Marco says – reply to this

    370

Ok Toby is an idiot and his music sucks donkey dicks! However, neither the song nor the video appear racist to me. And I'm a gay Latino who grew up in the south!!

  71. 371

I actually love that song, and knew it was about hanging criminals, how they used to do it in the old West, but I never thought it was meant racially. And I still don't. That's pure speculation.
    .
Toby Keith may be dumb sometimes, but I don't think he's racist. If he is…the really, really sucks.
    .
And I really didn't need to see pictures of people being hung! It's like signing up for PETA, and then getting mail showing animal abuse.

I think I figured out what this goofiness is all about. Better that we discuss a "cowboy" song than Ludacrus "painting the White House, black. Now you wanna talk racism, listen to Hussein's pal!

remember people, you are guaranteed the right to free speech, not the right not to be offended. that song has no racial undertones at all, it's a toby keith, willie nelson song. get over it, bleeding heart liberal

Re: SMH – He is not talking about just lynching BLACK people, or slavery for that matter. Geez! You should really get your history straight before you go pointing your crooked little finger at "white people". Get your fucking facts straight!

I calling bullsh** on this one. In the youtube video the article refers to there is a black homeless man, white prostitute, white drug dealers AND the murderer @ the end is WHITE!!! I think it's pretty stupid to pull racism out of that. Criminals are all colors. To bring up lynchings a hundred years ago that had nothing to do with TK is really pushing it. This paper needs some garden parties to cover because they obviousely aren't capable of printing a factual story. I think someone needs some oversensitivity training.

Hey Perez, why don't you study up on your facts about country music? Find out what they sing about and what the singers believe in. Oh wait, they don't matter because they aren't paparrazzi loving coke addicted socialites. Toby Keith is one of the biggest names in Country music right now. You all can call him racist but I am 100% sure at the end of the day, he does not give a damn what a bunch of people from the big city think about him. Sure, call the song racist.. even though you know it isn't. Go ahead and blow everything out of context just so you have something to talk about. You're a douche Perez!

IT'S NOT RACIAL - Perez you're starting to sound like the Enquirer, are you losing daily hits? You use to report, now you're making crap up. READ the lyrics, its not about blacks its about "wicked" unlawful men, idiot.

And what about all the rap songs aimed against white people?BET? Black History Month???Kwanza?? If white people had any of those days we would be considered racist…People need to be more laid back and let shit just fly.

This song is old, and doesn't Willie Nelson sing that part anyways?

He is just saying that people aren't punished anymore for what they do.

Your making this WAY bigger than it has to be.

    Fucking dumbasses!

Was Toby Keith trying to be racist? Probably not. Does that make the song any less insensitive? Not really. History is what it is. Just because Keith is oblivious, it doesn't make the connection between -isms and vigilante "justice" any less real.

This song kind of demonstrates that the people who take the law into their own hands were regular Joes like Toby Keith and as high as Willie Nelson. This was probably true in the old West and it is true today. Keith's support of our troops is great and all, but I would rather trust "due process."
"Oops" doesn't cut it when you hang the wrong person.

hey dumbass this song is like 4 years old and GUESS WHAT???!!! LEAGENDARY SINGER SONGWRITER WILLIE NELSON sings this song WITH TOBY. Who gives a shit…take things for what their worth, dont dig so deep…sometimes things mean just what they are, nothing deeper. Thats one of the great things about country music.

So, why don't we all analyze the lyrics in Toby's song "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again."? That should get you all going! Oh wait, blowing racism out of context is way more entertaining, whereas you have a country boy singing about weed.. that's alright.

While I'm not a Toby Keith fan, this is all ridiculous! Many people were lynched back in "the day" (Wild West, etc.), it wasn't a fate specific to African Americans. Many men and women (of various nationalities) were lynched in the day when this terrible practice was an acceptable form of execution for criminals. The racial lynchings were motivated by hate and ignorance not legitmate crimes (in most cases). This writer choose to include the horrific photo of the racial lynchings to create a buzz (more hate and ignorance). The song (Beer for My Horses) is several years old. Last I checked, there were no racially motivated lyrics in the song. Move on people! Don't spread hate and ignorance, please!

did anyone read the lyrics in the article?? there is not one word that can be linked to racism. yes, african americans were hanged back when the kkk ran the south, but hangings have been used as a form of execution in many different countries for thousands of years. if anything you should be arguing with toby kieth's stance on the death penalty, not him being racist. people are too easily offeneded and its mostly because they draw conclusions and are uneducated. not to mention toby keith isn't from the south, he is from norman, ok which is the west, and he was singing about texas and in that time frame texas was i believe just won in the mexican-american war and slavery had been abolished in mexico in 1829 and texas was under mexican law and the people of texas were against slavery even after it was admitted into the union. not all bloggers know what the hell they are talking about and i love you perez but even sometimes you're wrong. give this guy a break.
