You know what, I am not seeing what you are seeing. This is ludicrous! This is not a racist song but rather a vigilante song. Most of us are tired of being victims of our own lives because WE get our 2nd ammendment rights limited (or sometimes revoked altogether!!) and the gun-totin' bad people are hardly ever punished justly. I know, Toby is just a redneck, so it comes out really ignorant-sounding, but the sentiment is there to protect ourselves and let the wrong be corrected swiftly.

    404

In the video clip showing the "gangster doing his dirty deeds" he should have showed the cowards hiding underneath their white cloaks and dunce caps burning their crosses! Then that would've convinced me this song doesn't have racial undertones. FUTK

everyone needs to get a grip and stop being sooo touchy about everything!!!!IT'S JUST A DAMN SONG!!!!!! AND A GOOD ONE AT THAT!! Toby is a great guy! open your eyes & close your mouths!!! People…..get a life!! DAMN!!

    406

    Dear Perez

You're an idiot….if you watch the video and listen to the song instead of the hype you might get it. Then again probably not as your clearly not the brightest crayon in the box. Way back in the wild west hanging was how they punished people for their CRIMES not their COLOR. Grow up get a life quit being a fat fucking loser! By the way I don't listen to country music but I still couldn't find anything racist about that song and video.

Re: Missy – you are the one who is judgemental, you don't know this man from a hole in the wall, how would you be genius enough to know this man's secret sexual preference? not to mention the fact that not all country music fans are torch weilding mobs of homosexual-racist ignorant hillbillies.

    408

this song is REALLY old, and it's just to show his support for the death penalty. the article you cite references cases that went down YEARS AGO, before little toby was even born. that article with it's racially biased history lesson, looking for the tiniest clues three minutes into his video, is what's responsible for the racist undertones. that author needs to get his head on straight. i don't like toby keith, but he's innocent on this one. sorry.

  9. Allen says – reply to this

    409

Toby Keith is amazing and a real american patiot he donates more time and money to the troops than any other celeb. The song si about hanging BAD PEOPLE not random people based on their race. Both Blumenthal and u Perez r retards.

Re: Mindy – That's so funny cause the Dixie Chicks did it for me. Although I still listen to Strait occasionally. Sorry if I offended anyone by using the word Strait, don't want some stupid idiot making something out of nothing.

    411

alright. Well, I myself am not a big country type girl so I thougt it would be a good idea to RESEARCH this before I made a comment one way or the other.
I watched the video on youtube and (shocker) the linked article is misleading and wrong. There is no "mexican" that is referred to in the article. Before making a judgement call on this one, WATCH THE SONG. Geez people.

  12. Good says – reply to this

    412

This song is how old, 5-6 years and you are now just complaining. It is not about racial issues, it is about the old west where murders, rapists, and pedofiles, the bad guys, were held accountable and did not sit 20-30 years in jail on the taxpayers money. Slow news day today? O' and in the end it was a white guy, the bad boy, that was arrested, should whites be offended.

  13. Steph says – reply to this

    413

Notice he never actually mentions race in the song. It just says people that commit crimes. People take things way too literally and make assumptions. You are assuming things here that arent even there

    415

1st of all this song is pretty old so I'm not sure why people are freaking out about it now.
2nd of all, The lyrics, along with what is happening in the video, are sung by Willie Nelson. The video is set in the Wild West in the 1800s and they are chasing a murderer. Although the song may be pro death penalty, that is pretty much the extent of it, which T.K. has made no secret he is for.

  16. ts says – reply to this

    416

Re: SMH – SMH, I'm Native American, and I say MOVE ON. Native Americans were dealt with just as harshly as African Americans (a fact I'm sure your ignorant ass would dispute, but read some history before you argue that fact), and yes, I'm sure some of my friends' families were responsible for some of that. But MOVE THE FUCK ON. motherfucking loser

  17. me says – reply to this

    417

Why are you getting your panties in a twist over a song that's like 5 years old, Perez? Get over it.

It's no where near a racist song. People are jumping to conclusions that are just stupid.

As much as I hate capital punishment, if hanging were around today it might just deter some of these idiots who do some of the crazy ass shit they do today.

Here's a perfect example: that unbelievable lunatic who beheaded a sleeping passenger on a bus here in Canada last night. He'll spend a maxium of 20 years in jail because here in Canada that's called a life sentence. What a joke!

  18. Linda says – reply to this

    418

Ok, first people are just to damn sensitive and think everything is always about race. Is it insensitve, sure, but his lyrics were more about getting justice on idiots who break the law…not about lynching african americans.

Second, just so people have the facts…Toby Keith is a registered Democrat..so don't go blamming republicans for this one.

  19. Love says – reply to this

    419

You and everyone else are full of BS. They are talking about lawmen back in the days of Pat Garrett and Wyatt Earp and men who created laws to protect innocent people and not bigots. Apparently, ignorance is still rampant in our day and age when someone takes something like a cowboy video and turns it into a racial epidemic. Toby Keith is completely an urban cowboy and does not conform to the stereotypes of country music. The people who were killed and lynched in the vid were not black. Bit**es projecting racial stereotypes are the reason racism still exists and you should all be ashamed.

  20. RMR says – reply to this

    420

It's Texas Ranger justice and not Souther Black Lynching. It's a country song for goodness sake. The wild west did things like that. If you stole a horse, you would get hanged. Watch Lonesome Dove.

  21. Bridg says – reply to this

    421

I didn't realize Toby Keith was a republican!… ’til I read the lyrics.

  22. DCF says – reply to this

    422

I find it absolutely amazing that people who aren't white get to call all of us racists over the lamest shit yet we're the racists. NO where in that song that it say anything about hanging black people nor do I think that was ever the message intended. Furthurmore, Toby Keith isn't a dick. He just says what he means and means what he says. It's a nice change from all this PC everybody pretend to play nice bullshit we all get to live with everyday. I look forward to the day we all have true equality, and that includes for white people.

    424

That is the most stupid article I have ever read.
They have twisted around facts to make it seem horrible.
    1. He never mentions race
    2. He later says that justice is "for the long arm of the law," no longer for groups of vigilantes
    3. He says that God will judge.

The author is an uneducated piece of trash to write something like this.

  25. Ashle says – reply to this

    425

This is ridiculous. He's talking about an eye for an eye, not lynching black people. Come on. Maybe your the racist for implying that blacks are "gangsters" and committing"street crimes". Come on!

    430

these are things that HAPPEND in the past..why do people choose to get offended about it if someone uses it in a song???

  31. Toby says – reply to this

    431

It's a fucking song. How retarded are you people for judging a man that wrote a song with Willie Nelson and sang it great???? At least he is writing about murdering cops and raping women. Lynchings is in our history no matter how many people would like to believe it did NOT happen. Get a life and leave Toby alone. The damn song has been out for years and now it is getting Perez's undies in a wad…..Teddy must not of sucked him off today.

  32. go to says – reply to this

    432

what's wrong with those lyrics? people get away with everything these days, maybe if they were held accountable for their actions, our country wouldn't be in this moral vacuum. grow up perez.

  33. sam says – reply to this

    433

first off why does everyone need to find controversy in everything! he isnt racist, if you knew anything about history you would know that white people were hung just like blank people. and even in the damn video the person getting hung is white so dont be stupid.

  34. Rhea says – reply to this

    434

I don't see what the problem is!!! A little more lynching might deter some criminals. Don't forget - he's not singing about jews or blacks - just criminals.

  35. Wrong says – reply to this

    435

Re: Oprah – You are definitely wrong - Toby Keith is NOT a Democrat. He is a Republican - the worst kind of Republican. Narrow-minded and stupid.

  36. Sheen says – reply to this

    436

Everyone needs to relax…okay, I'll play your little game and agree, the lyrics are a little harsh. But is this going to make me run out into the street, find the first african-american I see and string him up? NO!!! Why? Because I know the difference between RIGHT AND WRONG!! Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe this song is about how HISTORY repeats itself or just plain continues (we still have racism, bigotry and segregation of minorities) or how not much has changed in the last 50 years?? No, you just assume that these lyrics directly reflect Toby Keith's feelings about lynching and how he seems to be promoting it. Everyone needs to learn to start thinking on their own… GROW UP

  37. thisi says – reply to this

    437

I'm sure his song wouldn't have anything to do with Charles Lynch and his men who punished criminals around the time of the Revolutionary War by hanging them from trees. I find it ironic that the douche who wrote this article assumed he was automatically talking about black people because he referred to them as bad boys, gangsters, etc. I guess bad people don't come in any other color?

  38. My go says – reply to this

    438

Jesus people love to spin things. Toby never once said anything about targeting black people. AND the song has been out for YEARS already.

Maybe if we started lynching criminals there wouldn't be so much crime to begin with…

SERIOUSLY!!!! FUCK PPL GROW THE FUCK UP.

    443

Perez, you're an idiot. This song has been out for like 5 years. Slow news day?

  44. Geo says – reply to this

    444

Let me start by saying that I don't care for Toby Keith personally, however I don't think that this song has anything to do with race per-say. I think it simply means that our justice system is failing miserably and "back in the day" people were held accountable for things they did with their life. In one article I read here you were disgusted with the fatal beating of a transexual. Do you not feel that if people were held accountable for their actions like they were years ago, this type of thing would happen MUCH less?? White, black, yellow, green… doesn't matter what color you are, people like that who have no more respect for a human life should be hanged!

  45. 445

Why do you assume since he is talking about criminals that he is specifically talking about BLACK PEOPLE? Talk about being racist! What the lyrics more or less where speaking of was old-style frontier justice, where punishment was meted out immediately, not 20 years later after the crime!

Jeez, stop being hyper-sensitive and reactionary and trying to find something to make everyone a vicitm of the evil white man. Everyone whines so much nowadays no one even cares or pays any attention to it anymore!

  46. Deb says – reply to this

    446

    Dear Perez Hilton,

    You are the idiot!

  47. Carin says – reply to this

    447

There is abosolutely nothing racist about that music video…I just watched it. Perez you should be ashamed of yourself.

  48. Alli says – reply to this

    448

Okay, first of all, this song is a few years old now…so why is this an issue NOW, why not when it was released, or when the music video was released? In the song it even says "the long arm of the law", so no he is not pro-vigilantism. As for racist, who really knows what his views are, but very brief imagery in a video, should not be taken so seriously. Are there people out there that actually search for this kind of thing?

  49. Shini says – reply to this

    449

I am totally disgusted with society today! If anyone is a racist it's the fucking moron who wrote that article and those (you) douchebags that stand behind and hang onto every word! The writer is clearly a dipshit liberal who tries to point out people that are "racists" when in fact if anyone is, it would be he himself considering the only thing that he tries to find and focuses on and make up are racially disrespectful things to write ridiculous, outlandish and way over the top articles on. Seriously, I watched both the music video and trailer for for the film and have also been enjoying that song for years and never once even found/heard a racial implication. I guess every screen writer and actor are racists if the bad guy in the project that they are in or writing is anything but white correct? Should we also assume that the actor of whatever ethnicity that is playing the role of the villian is also a hater of his or her own race? Yes, that makes total sense.

  50. you' says – reply to this

    450

I love that song, I don't think it is meant to be litarell.

  51. Peter says – reply to this

    451

It's not about lynching black people in Jim Crow days, it's about hanging criminals in the Wild West days. Think: Cattle thieves, killers, etc. Next time learn a little about the context first.

  52. gwen says – reply to this

    452

    bahahaha that is so stupid.

next i'm sure the evil white country singers will have to donate money to reparations or something else dumb.

  53. delil says – reply to this

    453

YOU are creating a controversy where none existed. Before you start trying to accuse a man of racism and racist intentions, please do some research. Please have a look at the video that Mr. Keith released for this song. It does not advocate lynching. The people joining him in the video are lawmen, including Willie Nelson as a marshall. Please stop trying to create hate and hysteria where none existed before you put it there. There are enough problems between people who are different from each other without someone who has such a wide forum promoting and fanning the flames of misunderstanding and hatred.

  54. BethJ says – reply to this

    454

seriously? Where was this rant 5 or so years ago when this song came out? It was originally a duet with Willie Nelson. Race is not mentioned anywhere in the song, assuming the word "Gangster" only refers to a black person and assuming only blacks were ever hung are the only racist statements I saw in the article.

Some of these political types need to get a hobby and quit stirring the pot, Perez- don't jump on any bandwagons over the usage of a couple of words, it's childish.

  55. 455

people are stupid….the song is not about "lynching" people make it about racist things when they are afraid that they might be partaking in racist activities

  56. Heath says – reply to this

    456

It's a song that refers to the old west, not the old south. Get over yourselves, and quit trying to creat controversy. Not everything is literal.

  57. forme says – reply to this

    457

great song! and it's like 5 years old moron! why ru reacting to it now! it's actually a song about how criminals & low life were dealt with when we had a real legal system, not like now when people literally get away w/ murder, swift justice sweet and simple, sit down with this stupid critcism

  58. DEBBI says – reply to this

    458

PEREZ, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. THERE IS NOT ONE THING RACIALLY SLANTED IN THAT VIDEO. It is only about bringing justice to these low life gangers who are ruining our world. BRAVO, Toby Keith!!!!!!!

  59. Kelly says – reply to this

    459

That song has actually been out and on the radio for a couple years. Why is it now suddenly a race issue? It's a standard tale of good guy vs. bad guy and then drinking after you catch them!! Everything can be interpretted more than one way and just because someone says it's so doesn't make Toby Keith some Lynch mob encouraging racist. I love that song!

  60. JJ says – reply to this

    460

Get over it — the song's been around for a long time now. I've listened to it, sang along with it, played it for friends across racial lines) and no one has been offended. It's a song about not putting up with violence, crime and dirty deed doers.
Toby's not the idiot — Perez is for creating a link to a hate filled link. This one should have been put under the category of "if you are easily offended"….

  61. trici says – reply to this

    461

Wow, all you people that think this song is about "lynching" are ridiculous-and should learn how to read… Nowhere in the song does he say he's lynching people. he's talking about people that are KILLING each other in the streets, abusing people. GANGSTERS does not mean black people…it means GANGSTERS. The hard core ones that hurt people for money or "respect" and don't give a shit about it. The person who misread this to be a song that is racially motivated obviously twisted an artists lyrics for his/her own needs. NOWHERE does it say anything about hurting innocent people who have done no harm-that is what the "lynching" back in the day was about-prejudice. I guess if anything Toby Keith is prejudice against rapists, abusers, murderers, thieves, gangsters etc. I guess I'm prejudice against that too…
this is just another example of an adult having a hissy fit like a 2 year old, and taking it out on someone. grow up…get a life…stop making things up about people that you don't necessarily agree with. This is America-if you don't like the different opinions LEAVE…

  62. Audra says – reply to this

    462

It's againtst black people, it's against people in general that don't abide by the law. Don't call someone a racist until you know for a fact that's what they are, it's insulting and hurtful.

  63. Shay says – reply to this

    463

Just watched Tobey Keith and Willie Nelson on U-tube, NOTHING RACIAL, at all. Gonna go out and buy that CD. The lynchings are pictures hanging on a wall from the wild west cowboy days. You want racism, start printing lyrics from rap songs, they've got all the racism you can handle, but that's not your agenda is it?

  64. Audra says – reply to this

    464

It's not against black people, it's against people in general that don't abide by the law. Don't call someone a racist until you know for a fact that's what they are, it's insulting and hurtful.

  65. kelei says – reply to this

    465

He's not an idiot. He isn't talking about specifically black people. He's talking about "bad" people. All people out there that think only black people can be bad or gangsters are retarded and living in a hole. He doesn't mention black in the song at all. And not only blacks were lynched. In the old days, that's how they executed people. White people were lynched just as much. Go look at the Salem witch trials where they hung thousands of white people. They talk about how many blacks were lynched but it wasn't really that many. There is a great black history museum in Baltimore, MD that has the names of every black person lynched…about 3000. So get over yourselves with trying to make every look racist.

  66. HELLO says – reply to this

    466

Ok, Perez…normally I agree with you, but this is RIDICULOUS. The song has been out forever and this article is clearly looking for trouble. It has nothing to do with race - he's talking about hanging people, which was common to justice in the wild west, the context of the song.

Lynching, or hanging, is not only found in racial contexts. Didn't you guys see Pirates of the Caribbean and the pirates punished by hanging?

  67. Jaime says – reply to this

    467

I call BS! It's not worth the effort of reading! The song says nothing about racism! My Grandfather owns acres and acres of cotton fields maybe he's a racist. Or maybe you are for wearing cotton!

  69. Dana says – reply to this

    469

Did you people even watch the video? Or did you just jump on the bandwagon? There is NOTHING racist in that video. In fact, the "gangster" ends up being a white guy. The black guy with dreads was being asked if he had seen the gangster. Idiots. Brainless idiots.

  70. Fury says – reply to this

    470

This song is like 4 or 5 years old…and it is NOT racially tinged. Blacks aren't the only gangsters. AND the blacks and jewish people weren't the only ones lynched back in the day. Come on people…get a grip. I mean what's wrong with thinking a little hard core justice would keep crime down? You people are the idiots! I mean, I guess we should continue to let murderers sit on death row for 15 years and put child molesters back out on the street as long as they're "registered" Well, I agree with Toby…kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out!

  71. chris says – reply to this

And for the record, the "gist" of the song is that people should be held accountable for the things that they've done. No where in the song does it specify or imply color.

    Dear Rocky,

Read your history. There is nothing safe in copping that attitude"people are so sensitive" This is a horrible topic for a song. God forbid we go back to the old days. Thanks Perez for occasionaly putting something of substance up here

    and you are so ignorant.

If this is a metaphor than you and Toby and everyone involved including that pigtailed pot smoking old fart in that video are idiots and ignorant

You're an idiot for 1cuz you read the huffington post, and 2 because the song is talking about western justice, when people had to take the law into their own hands or there wasn't any law. Better just deal with it. Country is the most marketable form of music out there. Which means that there a lot more people that agree with with him than agree with your peeps, thinking that they have to be offended at the opening of an envelope.

That song is several years old. It's just now getting this coverage because of the movie? I wouldn't say it's an ode to lynching but more of a kill em all and let god sort 'em out philosophy, which you've got to admit, was and still is popular in the conservative, republican, south.

You relize that this song was recorded over 2 or 3 years ago and it was recorded with Willy Nelson, your just now talking about it? Ummm Perez I thought you were quicker than that

Not surprising, really…Toby Keith is a mouthpiece for frustrated 19 year old closet cases and their stupid, underage girlfriends…Do Toby Keith and his fans do anything other than rant about how they're better everyone else and yell about kickin' ass? The lot of them are mostly pussies and bullies!
It's kind of sad…there's tons of decent country music out there. Myself, I'm a huge fan of string bands.

what amazes me is that red state half-wits will actually go apeshit over this song & the movie that goes with it….pitiful.

This is so stupid. This doesn't show he's racist. And if you listen to the ACTUAL SONG, Willie Nelson sings the part about what his "Grandpappy" did. Either way, this is completely blown out of proportion.

How is it than in this country people are so blindsided to the fact they MIGHT be sounding like a racist if they say something like that is in this song, that we forget about the fact that we are literally allowing and making excuses for poor behavior? I am sickened that anyone would not think "round 'em up and mow 'em down". We have people shooting firefighters and mothers with children standing next to them in malls. Is our culture now allowing this behavior? If YOUR family was about to be attacked, would YOU not want the SOB rounded up and hung. For goodness sakes people, WAKE the F up!!!!! Stop being so damn worried about sounding like a racist and get your head out of your asses. We are under seige from thugs and blood thirsty predators. WHY are we SO afraid to take thse people OUT?

First of all Perez I love you! But I have to call B.S. on your racial comment about Toby. I watched the video. The black guy they are talking to at that moment is being questioned and is homeless. They are NOT portraying him as a 'gangster'. Toby sings country music. Country music has deep roots. That is the way it was in the old west. Leave Toby alone please. He is not a racist and I think you are digging a little deeper into this than he intended.

PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP AND GET OVER IT - IT'S A SONG - WHO CARES???? RAPPERS SAY MUCH WORSE….NO ONE COMMENTS ABOUT THAT.

The world was a much better place & had a lot less crime when they did hang folks in the street; I think we should revert back to that practice and get a lot of these thugs off of the streets for GOOD!

im sorry but this song has been out for several years now, its nothing new nor something to be shocked about. its a song and if its such a big deal that he includes lyrics that mention a thing of the past then why are people not shocked by the disgusting, derogatory, or gangster lyrics of hip hop and rap. its only because he is a white man from that south that youre making a big deal about it. im sorry but im tired of people trying to make southern people out to be huge racists.

This is just further proof people are so desperate for conflict they wont even listen to common sense. Nothing in that song suggests anything related to any one race, but people who share nothing more than being an outlaw/law breaker. It is sad that we are likely going to elect a guy like Obama who has great ideas but with no way to do it. I don't like McCain either. 40% of his supporters probably know nothing about him other than he is "Charismatic". We can't even say Merry Christmas anymore without worry of offending people. The majority is letting the minority (beliefs, not skin color) run this country. We need to take it back before our kids become even more fucked up and sissified than they are now.
