Stoned!

Filed under: Legal Matters > Sharon Stone

wenn19843411.jpg

We're all up for a good laugh, but this one is just a bit too ridiculous.

Sharon Stone was just recently served with legal papers demanding $1 billion!

The suit comes from more than 1,000 Chinese earthquake victims and a New York attorney.

The documents announce attorney Ming Hai's intention to sue Stone for "harming Chinese people when she suggested the catastrophic quake last May was "karma" for the regime's occupation of Tibet."

WTF?!?

Ok, Hai is just a bit out of it. We understand no-named attorneys trying to get publicity by suing a celebrity, but this is just stoopid.

Hai wrote, "For the families who have lost their loved ones or lost limbs or suffered severe injuries, your … statement and act has caused extreme emotional distress."

Yea, and what's going to happen with the money? Is Hai going to go to China and distribute it all?

Puh-lease.

Stone's apologized several times already. Who can blame her? She's just an idiot.

Her original remarks were "I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, is that karma — when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

Time to get over it. She mispoke. She's apologized several times. She's been banned from China's International Film Festival in Shanghai, she was dropped from Dior's ads.

And now you want her to pay up?

What do U think?

Publicity stunt from the attorney, or should Sharon really be forced to pay?

In the United States, it's called FREEDOM OF SPEECH! So she said something that was probably a bit uncalled for?…at least she apologized for it… Whatever, she'll never have to pay a dime…

By the way Perez, I'm going to forward this article, along with your last few China bashing articles over to the Chinese Consulate. I'm going to suggest that China ban your website and bar you from entering their country. You're obviously Anti-China. It's alright, I'm Anti-Dumbfuck Fat Ass Cubans. We're square.

    110

well, i think she should be allowed to say what she wants. if the money will definatly go to the charity of the chinese who were offended or hurt by this comment then perhaps she should propose a donation rather than them suing her… maybe half to china half to tibet? if she feels that way, perhaps she should try and do something about it without being careless in her speech.. or what other people consider to be careless. I don't think she said anything wrong, people just took it the wrong way. Mind you, its not about what she said, its about money. they just took it as an opportunity to get money. i guess thats how it goes now…

It's funny how Americans want to cry "Free Tibet" or "So and so is a human rights violator" Have you forgotten about what America did to the Native Americans, enslaved the Africans, put the Japanese in interrment(sp?) camps agianst their wills and stood by as the Holocaust went on? Not to mention, did we help the Rwandans when they were being hacked to death back in 94'? Am I the only one who knows that those things went on or have I imagined studying and researching those parts of history?

  14. Frank says – reply to this

    114

Okay this is ridiculous. I do not think what she said was all that bad. She didn't say it happened because of karma, what she said was, "and I thought, is this karma?" It was in the form of a question, not a factual statement. Anyone with the intellegence to listen to what was actually said would realize that….and since when is someone expressing their thoughts worthy of legal woes?

Whatever. I do not think it was karma and am saddened by the loss of so many people..but she was right to a degree…..if you do mean things then mean things will come back to you…that is the law of karma. It doesn't mean this horrible incident was the fault of the chinese people. It does mean that if you are a stupid fuck and hurt people, you can expect the same in return.

    116

Sharon may have been a bit of a goofus for her statement (nothing unusual for her), but fortunately for her this is the USA and freedom of speech still abounds; (even when it's a stupid remark). Unfortunately for the 1000 Chinese that are suing her, they are in Communist China and they seem not to understand freedom of speech and even more unfortunate is the fact there are "some" ambulance chasing lawyers. This is a great joke and a complete waste of time and blog space. IMHO

  17. marij says – reply to this

  22. Ches. says – reply to this

    122

She is right, that is karma. And most Chinese people believe in it, so what is their problem? If we look at the happening from their point of view (Hinduism or whatever they believe in) than it is their fault.

  23. Dybil says – reply to this

    123

Well, what she said is true. You can not have a government with double standards regarding democracy, lilberty, respect and tolacerace. It will come back to you, one way or other. And what is happening in China not only the government is responsible but also the people in there that see it and let it happen. STAND BY TIBET !!

Or has our thurst for cheep crap from China effected what used to be American's committment to human rights. We're going over there to the censored Olympics. Fuck the Chinese government and the rick-shaw they're riddding in. Oh, I'm offended….Booo…Hooooo…!

    There.. Sue me!

  43. Yesir says – reply to this

    143

Yes, Sharon certainly put her foot in it. She didn't say 'it was karma', which is an outright accusatory statement, rather she said what's written here, which was 'is that karma?' which is simply a allegory philisophical question. Either way, she realized that she mispoke. On that basis, do any legal eagles know if the suit would hold water where it was filed? Even if it doesn't, they've made their point.

  44. 144

she made a stupid comment..fine! she probably didnt realize how bad it sounded until she actually said it..she appologized over and over..why should she have to pay money??? Someone here commented saying" i hate chinks"

It's called freedom of speech. She's entitled to her opinion. That's something the Chinese will NEVER understand since these basic rights are denied them. 52. cavy says – reply to this

We have to remember that freedom of speech and individuality is not allowed in China. There are many reasons I'm not watching the Olympics (I've never missed one yet) because of China's cruelty and this is just one more reason to add to my long list…

    157

First of all, most of the Chinese affected by the quake would have never heard Stone's comments because they live in houses without electricity or running water, and that was before the quake. Second, China should be more concerned regarding their pollution output into our environment then with an actress's comments. Besides, don't other countries make negative comments about our disasters, i.e. Hurricane Katrina.

    159

This whole situation isn't worth any court's time. First of all, in the US there is such a thing as FREEDOM of SPEECH. Um, how do Sharon's remarks not fall under that? They don't incite violence. Second, its funny how the Chinese want to be able to treat the Tibetans however they want, yet are part of a lawsuit against Sharon for these remarks? Think about the lawsuits the Tibetans could file against them for "pain and suffering" or whatever. The NY attorney filing this suit needs a 2 week trip to Tibet to see what real "suffering" is.

  63. what says – reply to this

    163

whether the amount of the suit is ridiculous or not, it is time this woman was taken to task for her insensitive, ignorant remarks. she was ridiculously out of line with her comments. she needs to dip her tongue in her brain before she speaks. she not only embarrassed herself, she embarrassed this country and she did hurt a lot of innocent people with her crass comments. as a public figure one takes on the responsibility of acting like they have some sense and compassion. if they don't then they should be called on the carpet for it and harshly.

  64. Jen says – reply to this

    164

Yeah she misspoke but karma is a HUGE issue in the Chinese culture. One of the staples of Buddhism is karma. Buddhism has many followers in China and Asian countries in general. It's actually the 4th largest religion in the world. To them, it's almost as if she put a curse on them just by speaking those words.

I don't think she should have to pay them at all…I'm just trying to shed some light as to why they are "over-reacting." If someone said something to that nature about America, we'd be up in arms filing lawsuits everywhere. It's just a difference in culture is all.

    Good luck Sharon!

Personally, I think her original comments had some truth in them. She never once said, "HEY, you damned Chinese–it is so your fault this happened to you." She merely pointed out that when their is mistreatment, there is payback. So it came in the form of an earthquake? Maybe–who knows…that is what the exsistensialism of karma is about.

  71. sharo says – reply to this

    171

of course they are not going after her for the money. she has none and it's a known fact. when was the last time she was featured in a successful film? the purpose of it all is to humiliate her the same way she blamed karma on the the earthquake survivors and victims. how would you feel if jackie chen says 911 happened because of karma? it's a sensitivity issue. she's as dump as dirt to have made such comment when china is still digging corpses in collapsed buildings. and those that say you f*ing hate chinks, stop buying stuff made in china i dare you…

  72. cavy says – reply to this

Tibet is part of China. People who don't know the history and culture should shut up! Sharon Stone got what she deserved. Now is it bad karmar for being stupid?

people, especially WHITE people, need to stop apologising every time some disgruntled minority gets their feathers ruffled. Political correctness is just disguised racism against fair skinned people. Why should I apologise because you're a wimp? If it's ok for Hollywood to make movies that mock white people and it's ok for rappers to spew hate at white people and it's ok for blacks to kill us for our skin color then why are WE the ones expected to apologise? I think WE'RE owed an apology for putting up with this bullcrap.

If anyone has harmed the Chinese people its the Chinese Government!

But, if he sued the Chinese Government he'll be executed for daring to…and some lucky duck will get his kidneys and liver!

Just some weasel attorney seeking hiis FIFTEEN MINUTES.
Although Sharon Stone is not one of my favorite people, what she said is
true and lot of people feel that what goes around, comes around.
I also thought it terribly unprofessional that Dior dropped her from their
ads. Shame on Dior; could be they run a few sweatshops in China perhaps??
