We're all up for a good laugh, but this one is just a bit too ridiculous.
Sharon Stone was just recently served with legal papers demanding $1 billion!
The suit comes from more than 1,000 Chinese earthquake victims and a New York attorney.
The documents announce attorney Ming Hai's intention to sue Stone for "harming Chinese people when she suggested the catastrophic quake last May was "karma" for the regime's occupation of Tibet."
WTF?!?
Ok, Hai is just a bit out of it. We understand no-named attorneys trying to get publicity by suing a celebrity, but this is just stoopid.
Hai wrote, "For the families who have lost their loved ones or lost limbs or suffered severe injuries, your … statement and act has caused extreme emotional distress."
Yea, and what's going to happen with the money? Is Hai going to go to China and distribute it all?
Puh-lease.
Stone's apologized several times already. Who can blame her? She's just an idiot.
Her original remarks were "I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. And then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, is that karma — when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"
Time to get over it. She mispoke. She's apologized several times. She's been banned from China's International Film Festival in Shanghai, she was dropped from Dior's ads.
And now you want her to pay up?

Would that even hold up in a court? Can another country's citizens sue from another country for remarks made by someone who has the "freedom of speech" behind them?
This is such bullshit. I think it's hysterical, the hypocrisy going on here. Basically the arguement goes, "Sharon Stone said mean things. Shame on her!!!" What about the argument of "China's occupation of Tibet is WAY worse than anything Sharon Stone COULD have said"?

When you're a celebrity in the public eye like Sharon is, YES, you do need to watch what you say. I think it's ridiculous that someone would even try suing her for her statement, but she should've thought it over before issuing such a statement. We have freedom of speech, but you should be prepared to deal with the consequences of your freedom to say whatever you like.

We have free speech in the United States. Americans, thankfully, exercise that right all over the world. Sharon Stone is not unique in this. It's arguable that she said anything "wrong," and in fact it is interesting to ponder the idea of karma, which is really what Stone, a Buddhist, was suggesting. She was probably just thinking aloud — poor thing — nothing more. What an absurd reaction, to react by suing?!!!. The woman suing seems to be taking her government's style to heart. As everyone knows, the Chinese government will do virtually anything to curtail people's opinions and cut short others' beliefs.

Okay, I'm Chinese and live in Hong Kong (and yes, we have freedom of speech and our websites are not blocked la de da…) and the racism in these comments is seriously disgusting. It's not the Chinese government suing Sharon Stone, it's some f-ed up probably US-educated NY lawyer who probably took advantage of the quake victims and got them to sign a petition that they didn't understand. And yea, she f-ed up and doesn't deserve to be sued, but I'm fairly sure that you Americans would be pissed off if a few days after 9-11 someone else said it was karma.
As for China not having freedom of speech, etc it's a DIFFERENT CULTURE. Get over it. You guys eat the most unhealthy crap ever and are insanely obese and we don't criticize. The French eat snails, the Chinese/Korean eat dogs (a practice which is banned in many Chinese cities by the way). And as for stealing your jobs and selling you crap products you should look towards your own corporations because they're the ones asking the Chinese to give that to you.
