this is such a horrific tragedy. i live in winnipeg, and this is all everyone is talking about. everyone is absolutely shocked. the rcmp will be hosting a media conference in the next hour to update the public on their investigation. i have a lot of friends that travel by bus from brandon to winnipeg - and many of them don't want to take the bus any more.

okay i have taken the overnight greyhound before and I've seen a crazy guy on there yelling at people, finally the bus driver pulled over on got security from a station and they took the guy off. Through the window us passengers could see that the man had an approx. 9 ince long knife. Greyhound has no form of security check.

This is an horrific story. Period. It's not about the mentally ill, "free" healthcare, mullets or USA/Canada bashing. It's about a young man who died far to soon, through no fault of his own and a bus full of people who will never be able to un-see the events witnessed on that bus.

While I do agree that 37 people could have taken this guy down, I think that if they would have tried maybe 1 or 2 more would have died and a lot more would have been injured. Buses are very tight quarters, so if a group of people were surrounding the attacker he could have lashed out and cut 5 of them across their neck or something. I'm just saying. Whereas if this incident had happened outside, onlookers could have jumped this guy from the back or had enough room to maneuver if he swung the knife at them. It's absolutely horrible what happened to this young man. But I think because of the small, confined space in which it happened, everyone's first instinct was to get the hell off the bus.
That is so disturbing,that is really close to me! At least they can put him away so he doesn't do that to anyone else… I was thinking of going by bus to calgary but I don't think I will ever go on a bus ever!

One guy ran up and down the aisle, waking sleeping passengers and dragging them off the bus. A six-year-old kid was among them.
A person doesn't have to put his or herself at risk to be a hero. The simple act of caring about others can be heroic.
The only people who can judge the conduct of the passengers on the bus are the passengers themselves. Human nature being what it is, I'll bet some of those folks will be hard enough on themselves.
Anyone else has no idea of the age, health or ability of those passengers. Or of their personal situations. Perhaps they had children at home who need them. Or elderly parents they're caring for. Presumably the parent or guardian(s) of the six-year-old could think of nothing more than bringing their child to safety and without seeing what was happening. Are we supposed to criticize him or her?
Not one of us has any idea what we would do in that situation. Let's credit those who did their best to alert passengers to the danger and to make sure the attacker didn't go anywhere with that bus. They deserve our praise.
But let's let those people who simply ran to safety a break. We don't know their circumstances.

I think we are making fast judgment calls about why didn't people go stop the guy while on the bus, that they are cowards. But busses have small aisles and I doubt no more than 1 person could have even gotten close to him to stop him. It's simple math: Man + a giant knife vs me = man + knife wins… if some guy was wielding a gigantic knife having already stabbed someone else, I'd be the first to get away. At least they went back when everyone was off the bus safely. There are still a lot of details we don't know. I just read about it on Global BC's website and have felt sick to my stomach ever since. Stuff like that only happens in movies …. WTF? My heart goes out to all the passengers on the bus when it happened. I can't imagine what was going through their minds. Unbelievable!
This is an horrific story. Period. It's not about the mentally ill, "free" healthcare, mullets or USA/Canada bashing. It's about a young man who died far to soon, through no fault of his own and a bus full of people who will never be able to un-see the events witnessed on that bus.
I find the comments relating this to a "horror movie" quite interesting though, as we're supposed to believe that violence in movies and video games has no negative or lasting effect on us.

As disgusting as that attack is, it dissapoints me honestly. It shows us how selfish we all are. Why on Earth if there is 37 OTHER people on that bus do they not do anything to stop him. I highly doubt he would be able to kill any of them with around 37 people (less with children) and they may have saved that innocent man's life. If I was in that situation, I would have done my best to stop the attack, honestly people.

The Canadian media (of which I am a part) doesn't identify by race unless it's relevant. Does it matter what his race/ethnicity is? He's obviously a very sick individual, whether he's white, black, Aboriginal or Asian; Christian, Jew, Muslim, Sikh or Hindu.
Nor does it matter if he was Canadian or American (that's for you, USA 70, who is so certain some Canadian hoser did this) or any other nationality.
It's horrible to hear these stories … I can't imagine how the people involved in it – from the victim's family to the passengers on the bus to the family of the man in custody (yes, they are victims, too … imagine how they will be vilified in their community – are coping.

While I do agree that 37 people could have taken this guy down, I think that if they would have tried maybe 1 or 2 more would have died and a lot more would have been injured. Buses are very tight quarters, so if a group of people were surrounding the attacker he could have lashed out and cut 5 of them across their neck or something. I'm just saying. Whereas if this incident had happened outside, onlookers could have jumped this guy from the back or had enough room to maneuver if he swung the knife at them. It's absolutely horrible what happened to this young man. But I think because of the small, confined space in which it happened, everyone's first instinct was to get the hell off the bus.
That is so disturbing,that is really close to me! At least they can put him away so he doesn't do that to anyone else… I was thinking of going by bus to calgary but I don't think I will ever go on a bus ever!

Why is it airplanes and airports have all that security and cops patrolling the area, but train and bus stations don't have any security measures so anyone with a knife or gun can just hop on the bus or train and shoot you dead? Yeah, I'll not touch a Greyhound bus until they have people go through security like at airports. Fuck, the poor guy, what a way to die. To the people who are talking about why the passengers didn't attack this guy:
One guy ran up and down the aisle, waking sleeping passengers and dragging them off the bus. A six-year-old kid was among them.
A person doesn't have to put his or herself at risk to be a hero. The simple act of caring about others can be heroic.
The only people who can judge the conduct of the passengers on the bus are the passengers themselves. Human nature being what it is, I'll bet some of those folks will be hard enough on themselves.
Anyone else has no idea of the age, health or ability of those passengers. Or of their personal situations. Perhaps they had children at home who need them. Or elderly parents they're caring for. Presumably the parent or guardian(s) of the six-year-old could think of nothing more than bringing their child to safety and without seeing what was happening. Are we supposed to criticize him or her?
Not one of us has any idea what we would do in that situation. Let's credit those who did their best to alert passengers to the danger and to make sure the attacker didn't go anywhere with that bus. They deserve our praise.
But let's let those people who simply ran to safety a break. We don't know their circumstances.

Oh hey, I just re-read the CTV report, and hey, how come no one on that freaking bus stopped the guy? Yeah, so he had a knife and was stabbing someone, but there were 35 other people on the bus so how come they didn't like all pile up on him or something like that? Fuck, they all ran out. Would they have wanted people to run away if they were being stabbed themself? So yeah, everyone that read that story, you all think about what you would do in that situation. I can understand you running away if you were alone, but when you got 35 people around, and most likely one or two would be bigger than that psycho. I think we are making fast judgment calls about why didn't people go stop the guy while on the bus, that they are cowards. But busses have small aisles and I doubt no more than 1 person could have even gotten close to him to stop him. It's simple math: Man + a giant knife vs me = man + knife wins… if some guy was wielding a gigantic knife having already stabbed someone else, I'd be the first to get away. At least they went back when everyone was off the bus safely. There are still a lot of details we don't know. Don't assume that everything being reported is true just cause it's on a website or in a newspaper. All we know is someone died in probably the most horrible way and that his family is devasted.
