It is so bad. I just wish that the poor guy who became the insane murderer's victim could have lived! He was so young too!! Its so sad. So very sad. My heart really does go out to his family that will now have to deal with this horrific news. So tragic and awful. Literally like something out of a twisted horror movie. I am deeply shocked and saddened. I just hope now that the murderer gets locked up. And I really do hope that this does become the ONLY time in Canadian history that this happens. No one needs to have this happen again. No one.

I read this and I felt incredibly shocked however. I agree that it's the type of thing you'd hear about/see in a horror movie, and ONLY a horror movie. To hear that this is reality and to some innocent guy is devestatingly sad. My thoughts are with the victim's family.

SCARY AS HELL
This is so tragic. Number one for the victim being awoken by being stabbed, his poor family knowing how brutal his senseless murder was was and for the helpless passengers. We can say, why didn't they help him but really, anyone who did at that moment might have gotten stabbed too so I understand why they immediately did not help. The best thing was to get everyone off the bus so this guy could not hurt anyone else. I do know that those buses carry a small axe for emergenies (the bus drivers sometimes have to use them on hit deer or moose to get them off the road so no other unsuspecting motorist would hit it at night etc). In the panic the bus driver must have not been able to get at it but that could have helped to defend that poor man.

This is so scary, I just read about it on CNN. It's sad, Greyhound buses used to be a relatively safe way to travel, but no more. Every time I have ever taken a bus, there has been some sort of incident. The drivers have no protection against unruly (or now, murderous) passengers, plus, their job is to drive the bus, not fight with drunks, druggies, or crazy people. Every single bus should have a security person, sort of like an air marshall, but of course, the company is too cheap to pay for that. It's too bad because with the price of gas as it is, buses should be an economical way to travel, but the risk isn't worth it. I stopped "Going Greyhound" a long time ago, I feel that even after 9-11, flying is safer.

Obviously you know nothing about psychology. When confronted by something as horrific as that, a person would freeze up due to shock. It is completely normal that these people fled the bus due to our natural reaction to flee a dangerous situation. The only time you would probably step in is if this person was harming someone who you had a connection to.. ie: child, family member etc… We would all like to say we would have stopped this madman and it's so easy to act tough over the internets and say you would have done something but I'm pretty certain, YOU would have fled that bus with everyone else. Also, FYI, this man was probably already dead by the time the passengers realized what was going on. He really had no chance. This is an absoluely disgusting, dispicable crime.. PS: After reading some of the other comments, I have to say that this isn't about Canadians vs. Americans (I'm an American and admire Canadas government and all the people that I've met from there have been super cool). It IS about a deranged individual and a bus company that puts profit over the safety and comfort of its customers.
I've seen everything from bus drivers fighting with abusive drunks to a mentally ill woman passing out hundred dollar bills to the other passengers. On my last trip, there was an unconscious older lady who reeked to high Heaven, I sat across the aisle from her for 5 hours, afraid that she was going to die. I said something to the driver and nobody knew when she got on, where she was going or even who she was because someone had already stolen her purse. Instead of pulling over and calling an ambulance, the driver just left her as she was until we reached our destination. I'll NEVER ride a bus again.

i woke up this morning to this news story on CBC. I couldn't believe what i heard. I also can not believe that the murder caught the bus in Brandon. I live there and it is scary to think that he was in my city. I feel bad for the family of the boy killed. I will have to think long and hard before I go on a bus agian.

AS for the horrific incident that took place last night, our country has come together as a whole to mourn for the poor victim, and all the other victims who are going to be traumatized from this. i am from the east coast and this took place in the prairies. we are all hurting from this and it makes us all sick to our stomachs.

I beg to differ the victim would NOT have lived. I believe he was probably dead or near it after the first stab wound. A hunting knife was used and they are designed to kill effortlessly. The murderer knew what he was doing. Hunting knifes have serrated edges and will do quite a bit of damage to any organ it may hit. I believe the only option to avoid further death and injury was to vacate the bus.
The murderer is obviously mentally unstable, and this could have happened anywhere. Just like the toddler who was beaten to death last month in California. Many witnesses stopped and 'tried' to help, but no one was very successful. The crazed man was not stopped until a police officer put a bullet hole in his head. Things like what happened yesterday do indeed happen in the States too.

I'll bet you that the man was mentally ill. You have no idea how many people out there are afflicted with schizophrenia or other serious issues and are not being medicated. I had to learn a lot about it after one of my friends developed schizophrenia and refused to take his medication. He gets completely locked into an alternate reality and he's out there, wandering around. His family tried to have him committed and they were told that if he is not an immediate danger to himself or others there is nothing they can do. So many people slip through the cracks of the system. I really think they need to change the laws so that someone who is out of it but "not yet" a danger to themselves or others has to get treatment and be removed from society at large.

It's not the bus' fault, people. Just because one physcopath goes off on a Greyhound doesn't mean it wouldn't happen anywhere else. The guy was going to snap at some time or another. I live in the town that the killer got on in. It's a small farming community and it completely freaks the crap out of me that people that sick walk the streets of a place you think everyone knows everyone in and you don't even know. I can't imagine what the family must be going through. That boy was an hour from home and whoever was going to pick him up was looking forward to seeing him again. I cant stop thinking about this story.. it doesnt help that its all over the news.. i cant think of any other case in which a psycho murdered an innocent person so publicly.. it is a miracle that no one else was hurt… i feel so bad for the family of the victim.

I live in edmonton its been on the news non-stop. The bus was traveling edmonton to winnipeg. I read on one of the comments that edmonton is the 5th for murder. Actually we are number one for murders per capita and number one in canada for crime as well. I just moved here from calgary And it can be pretty scary here!!
i was at the movie step brothers last night and as i was driving home i saw a bunch of cops go east onto the highway like TONS of cops but i didnt think it would have been this horrible
yeah there is more to the story that they didnt put on there (apparently) and winnipeg isnt even that bad maybe like 30 murders a year.. and the town i live in where this happened there was a murder last year and it was the first in almost 20 years so manitoba isnt some scary place.
This really bothered me. No one did a thing to help the victim. Bus ailses are so narrow it would take forever for 37 people to get off, even if they were panicked and fleeing. All it would have taken is 2 men and maybe that victim might have lived.

SCARY AS HELL
This is so tragic. Number one for the victim being awoken by being stabbed, his poor family knowing how brutal his senseless murder was was and for the helpless passengers. We can say, why didn't they help him but really, anyone who did at that moment might have gotten stabbed too so I understand why they immediately did not help. The best thing was to get everyone off the bus so this guy could not hurt anyone else. I do know that those buses carry a small axe for emergenies (the bus drivers sometimes have to use them on hit deer or moose to get them off the road so no other unsuspecting motorist would hit it at night etc). In the panic the bus driver must have not been able to get at it but that could have helped to defend that poor man.

This is so scary, I just read about it on CNN. It's sad, Greyhound buses used to be a relatively safe way to travel, but no more. Every time I have ever taken a bus, there has been some sort of incident. The drivers have no protection against unruly (or now, murderous) passengers, plus, their job is to drive the bus, not fight with drunks, druggies, or crazy people. Every single bus should have a security person, sort of like an air marshall, but of course, the company is too cheap to pay for that. It's too bad because with the price of gas as it is, buses should be an economical way to travel, but the risk isn't worth it. I stopped "Going Greyhound" a long time ago, I feel that even after 9-11, flying is safer.

Obviously you know nothing about psychology. When confronted by something as horrific as that, a person would freeze up due to shock. It is completely normal that these people fled the bus due to our natural reaction to flee a dangerous situation. The only time you would probably step in is if this person was harming someone who you had a connection to.. ie: child, family member etc… We would all like to say we would have stopped this madman and it's so easy to act tough over the internets and say you would have done something but I'm pretty certain, YOU would have fled that bus with everyone else. Also, FYI, this man was probably already dead by the time the passengers realized what was going on. He really had no chance. This is an absoluely disgusting, dispicable crime.. I've seen everything from bus drivers fighting with abusive drunks to a mentally ill woman passing out hundred dollar bills to the other passengers. On my last trip, there was an unconscious older lady who reeked to high Heaven, I sat across the aisle from her for 5 hours, afraid that she was going to die. I said something to the driver and nobody knew when she got on, where she was going or even who she was because someone had already stolen her purse. Instead of pulling over and calling an ambulance, the driver just left her as she was until we reached our destination. I'll NEVER ride a bus again.

I beg to differ the victim would NOT have lived. I believe he was probably dead or near it after the first stab wound. A hunting knife was used and they are designed to kill effortlessly. The murderer knew what he was doing. Hunting knifes have serrated edges and will do quite a bit of damage to any organ it may hit. I believe the only option to avoid further death and injury was to vacate the bus.
The murderer is obviously mentally unstable, and this could have happened anywhere. Just like the toddler who was beaten to death last month in California. Many witnesses stopped and 'tried' to help, but no one was very successful. The crazed man was not stopped until a police officer put a bullet hole in his head. Things like what happened yesterday do indeed happen in the States too.

I'll bet you that the man was mentally ill. You have no idea how many people out there are afflicted with schizophrenia or other serious issues and are not being medicated. I had to learn a lot about it after one of my friends developed schizophrenia and refused to take his medication. He gets completely locked into an alternate reality and he's out there, wandering around. His family tried to have him committed and they were told that if he is not an immediate danger to himself or others there is nothing they can do. So many people slip through the cracks of the system. I really think they need to change the laws so that someone who is out of it but "not yet" a danger to themselves or others has to get treatment and be removed from society at large.

It's not the bus' fault, people. Just because one physcopath goes off on a Greyhound doesn't mean it wouldn't happen anywhere else. The guy was going to snap at some time or another. I'm not trying to play down the situation - it's totally horrific and I was shocked as anyone - but the problem doesn't end with having a registry for knives or posting metal detectors in bus terminals (which are two suggestions I have heard). How often do you hear of this happening? A crazy situation, but completely isolated.
Canada's Crime Rate 50 % Higher than U.S.
Press reports that Canada is a Shangri-la – an America with free health care and less crime – may be short sighted.
In fact, statistics show that the violent crime rate there is double that of the United States.
It seems Canada is looking for a scapegoat, too: Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin is blaming the United States for his country’s violent crime wave. He says his southern neighbor is eagerly bringing guns over the border.
According to the Second Amendment Foundation’s Alan Gottlieb, writing in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Martin is wrong for blaming Canada’s rise in violent crime on criminals smuggling guns from the United States.
Gottlieb says the blame instead belongs on Canadian crooks getting guns from wherever they can.
"Blaming the United States for Canadian crime is an argument that does not pass the smell test,” Gottlieb wrote. "Canada's experience has simply demonstrated that no matter what kind of gun control law a government passes, that law is doomed to failure because instead of keeping guns out of the wrong hands, the law disarms the wrong people. Canada's gun control scheme has not just failed - it has failed disastrously. Clear evidence of that can be found in a comparison of the crime rates for Canada and America.”
"The situation hasn't improved for Canada; it has here,” he wrote.
"Moreover, this shift in crime rates between the two countries has occurred while dozens of U.S. states have adopted ‘right-to-carry’ and ‘shall-issue’ handgun laws. During the same period, Canada’s gun laws have gotten more restrictive, with the national gun registry being implemented,” he added.
"Since declaring war on guns under former Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Canada's Liberals have presided over the sharpest rise in violent crime in the nation’s history.”
Gottlieb wrote that "Frum put it best when he claimed, ‘Gun registration and gun bans … do not work,’ adding later: ‘It is not guns from across the border that threaten Canadians. It is the weak and cynical policies of home-grown politicians, and especially the Chretien/Martin Liberals.’”
Martin and the Liberals are not the solution to violent crime in Canada, Gottlieb wrote. "They're the problem.”
Gottlieb concluded that "the disparity in crime rates says it all about how well gun registration works to stop crime, as opposed to actually carrying guns to deter criminals, and fighting back if necessary.”
Re: Canuc – YOU ARE WRONG. It IS the bus's fault. They should have had a police officer with a gun on the bus. They should have CHECKED that no one goes on the bus with a knife - LIKE THEY DO ON PLANES. In Israel, there is always AT LEAST ONE police with a gun on planes, they have TIGHT security because of all the mohammads who are threatening them. WTF is with the beheading????? I live in the town that the killer got on in. It's a small farming community and it completely freaks the crap out of me that people that sick walk the streets of a place you think everyone knows everyone in and you don't even know. I can't imagine what the family must be going through. That boy was an hour from home and whoever was going to pick him up was looking forward to seeing him again. This whole thing makes me seriously sick to my stomach.

Re: Crime – Although I agree with the fact that no country should blame another for their shortfalls (b/c no country is PERFECT!), I don't agree with you quoting someone like Alan Gottlieb. I cant stop thinking about this story.. it doesnt help that its all over the news.. i cant think of any other case in which a psycho murdered an innocent person so publicly.. it is a miracle that no one else was hurt… i feel so bad for the family of the victim.
I live in Winnipeg, just a little ways away from where this happened. A lot of the story is unconfirmed, and most passengers are being treated for shock.
I'm so stunned that this has happened, I can't even believe it.

I heard about this today. I honestly think the guy was on meth, like honestly when the cops are saying they havent even interviewed him yet? to me that just screams the guy is STILL high. My heart goes out to the victims family. You dont ever think something THAT gruesome will happen.

It looks like it's time for Greyhound to start a security sytem similar to the aiports…it just makes me sick! Thoughts and prayers to those that were travelling on the bus and the victim's family.

its been on the news non-stop. The bus was traveling edmonton to winnipeg. I read on one of the comments that edmonton is the 5th for murder. Actually we are number one for murders per capita and number one in canada for crime as well. I just moved here from calgary

i was at the movie step brothers last night and as i was driving home i saw a bunch of cops go east onto the highway like TONS of cops but i didnt think it would have been this horrible
yeah there is more to the story that they didnt put on there (apparently) and winnipeg isnt even that bad maybe like 30 murders a year.. and the town i live in where this happened there was a murder last year and it was the first in almost 20 years so manitoba isnt some scary place.
This really bothered me. No one did a thing to help the victim. Bus ailses are so narrow it would take forever for 37 people to get off, even if they were panicked and fleeing. All it would have taken is 2 men and maybe that victim might have lived.

k you would think that but when you are on a bus full of strangers and then you all of a sudden see a man in the back who is about 200 pounds stabbing the sh*t out of a teen (they said around 45 times he was stabbed) are you really going to run to the back and like try to get the knife away from him? everyone would have been in shock and im not sure if you take the bus alot (i have before) but its usually older women, mothers and children, and a couple students and every odd man but usually its people like those (that ive seen) i dont think any of that category are going to try and save the guy. they tried to go back and save him after a semi driver stopped and wanted to go in with a crowbar or something but the man tried stabbing him. even the guy in the interview he looks strong but you think he could take a psycho with a knife and who knows what else?
