Chinese Censorship: An Update

chineseflag1.JPG

The International Olympic Committe released the following statement on Thursday, in response to recent reports that the Chinese government will censor the websites journalists and visitors have access to during next week's Beijing Olympic games.

They say:

"Our position is that the IOC has always encouraged the Beijing 2008 organisers to provide media with the fullest access possible to report on the Olympic Games, including access to the internet.

In light of internet access problems which were experienced this week by media in the Olympic Games Main Press Centre in Beijing, the IOC – namely Chairman of the Beijing 2008 IOC

Coordination Commission Hein Verbruggen and Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli – held meetings and discussions today with Games organizers (BOCOG) and Chinese authorities.

The issues were put on the table and the IOC requested that the Olympic Games hosts address them. We understand that BOCOG will give details to the media very soon of how the matter has been addressed. We trust them to keep their promise.

The IOC would like to stress that no deal with the Chinese authorities to censor the internet has ever in any way been entered into."

They sound like a bunch of pussies to us.

The IOC needs to take a stronger stance!

What do U think?

China has also recently blocked access to the Amnesty International site after they made a report about China's human rights abuses and how China promised to improve yet are making very little progress.

Re: damn – Get real they do torture cats & dogs. Google dog meat china & animals asia. I'm sure you will agree these animals live horiffic lives & have even worse deaths. Dogs are bashed to death around the head because the men believe the adrenalin going through their meat while this is happening makes them more virile. They have dog & cat farms where a lot of animals die on the loaded trucks going to market. If anyone wants to make a horror movie go where they slaughter these animals. Everything that breaths & isn't human is food to them. Yes I'm vegetarian, animal lover & I check labels so none of my money goes to the sick fucks.

    Re: lulu
Lulu, you are pathetic. I'm sure China is more opened deveoped economically…. compare to 1960s. But in terms of human right, the Chinese government still hasn't made the improvement that they promised. I don't understand how some people can tell others not to believe the media, when China HAS DONE all the inhuman act that has been reported. In China's case, they DO torture some prisoners, such as the fu-long-gongers and the ones who are not communnism inclined.

I think who fucking cares if tourists can get internet access or not.

It's the Olympics, watch it on TV.

Then when the Olympics are over, keep working on resolving the Human Rights problem, i.e. Tibet. Yeah, they were "liberated" so China could exploit all their natural resources and turn Lhasa into a red light district and the Potala into an amusement partk.

I'm glad the man on the street normal Chinese citizen has improved living conditions, though.

    out.

Give me a break! Is anyone surprised that COMMUNIST China is censoring the internet? I think it's sad that so many are "overlooking" the human rights abuses in that horrible country.

If china is so evolved, why do protesters need to request permission to protest, from the communist regime?
