Riddle Me Depp?

As we mentioned earlier this month, reports state that the next Batman movie will feature the Riddler as the main villain.
Jim Carrey did a good job playing the last Riddler in 1995. So, who would likely take his place?
Well, some reports claim that Johnny Depp is being offered the role.
And with the success The Dark Knight has has had at the box office, making over $440 million worldwide, the producers don't think they'll have a problem convincing Depp to take the role.
A source says the producers "are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own."
They also plan on revisiting another one of Batman's enemies, the Penguin. And according to insiders, they are hoping the role goes to Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman.

1. I felt there were two possible characters in TDK that could be Riddler.
Mr. Reese ("mysteries") or Mike Engel, the reporter (Mr. E….mystery).
2. Jim Carrey did a good job, relatively speaking. The movie was shit. He wasnt that bad, in comparison. But dont compare his role to the possibility of a Nolan Riddler, cmon!
3. I really hope they have Catwoman as a second villain, and I am convinced its the better route to take. Now that Rachel is dead, there's room for Bruce to meet his 1 true love, Selina Kyle. Also, they referenced cats in regards to Batman's suit in the movie, so that could be another great hint. I believe it is Lucius Fox that says, "it'll work great against cats." after Batman is mauled by the dog. Helluva hint, my friends. Catwoman was always tearing up the suit.

5. Angelina Jolie as Catwoman would be such an easy route to take. Let's get a little more creative, spontaneous, unexpected. Like how Ledger's casting was, for some people, utterly surprising. And completely genius. Maybe Kate Beckinsale can do Catwoman, although, I would be inclined to reserve her for a possible Wonder Woman movie. But someone like *that*. A great actress, but not a superstar, and it would work great, while still being challenging. Angelina Jolie as Catwoman is BORING and requires little work. Nolan wouldnt SHOULDNT take the easy way out.

Sad to watch the movie today without him alive anymore… cried a little at the end knowing he never got to see the end product.
That's a lot of b.s. Nolan state he would not use the Penguin as a character because he was too "unrealistic".
Although this would please many people, Nolan won't even talk of a third Batman film yet, at least to the public. Read his interviews and see how he leaves fans skeptical of what will come next, though he already nixed out Penguin. Bale signed a contract for three films though….

Both choices if confirmed are billiant! Depp is quirky enough for The Riddler and Hoffman is if an interesting choice for Penguin. At the same time I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head for the role.
It was only a rumor that the riddler would be the next villian.Christopher Nolan has said that he would rather introduce the audiences to a lesser known villian for the next movie such as Black Mask. Which I think would be an amazing thing. The riddler, to me, is over played and over done. If, however, they do choose to cast the riddler I hope Johnny Depp isnt considered. He's great for POTC or any Tim Burton movie he's thrown in but i want him kept away from Batman.
depp is fucking terrible. jim carrey did the riddler for the cartoon-like batman movies back in the day. now that they are darker, carrey would DOMINATE it this time around. jim carrey is a genious and depp is just a tim burton puppet. if ANYthing, depp could maybe take over the joker if needed.

Awesome choices, but I hope the director tones down Riddler a lot. I picture him to be chilling, collected, smart– more creepy than all-out scary/psycho. Like Depp in "The Astronaut's Wife", more subtle than his usual. Oh boy, I'm already planning/hoping on a rumor! LOL nvm
While I'll buy The Riddler (maybe or maybe not as Depp), I won't buy Penguin. While Hoffman would make a GREAT Penguin, Nolan has repeatedly said that, in his Batman world, Penguin is too campy to recreate. He might find a way around that, but since he's said that so many times, I doubt it.

LOVE the choices for riddler and penguin, both are incredible actors who could really make some dramatic cinema with the material given.
HOWEVER -
I was really hoping they would bring cat woman into the next picture, especially in regards to batman's new love interest. According to the storylines in the comic book, cat woman is a lot darker then audiences have seen in past tv and film, she was a runaway, a thief, a pseudo-prostitude/dominatrix (of course there are TONS of variations on her background history so die hard batman comic fans forgive me for paraphrasing).
I was thinking Angelina Jolie OR perchance Kate Beckinsale for Catwoman, any thoughts?

I think Depp is a good choice for The Riddler but so would Crispin Glover. He constantly plays "creepy" and plays it well. I think Depp would bring in the bucks and has the acting chops to play the part but Crispin Glover would seem a much better fit. As for Hoffman he would be awesome as the penguine so long as they portray him as the corrupt bureaucratick sleaze ball he was in the comics.

benicio del toro would be interesting as riddler. depp is overrated, and has stated he will only do films his children can watch. if that is the case, say goodbye to the darker direction these films have taken. i dont want a watered down, disney version of batman.
There are little hints in Dark Knight that point to Catwoman as being the next villain, or it could be both I suppose. But I really do believe it will be Catwoman in the next movie.

Depp would be awesome, and I think they could make the Riddler fit into this new Batman world, but I don't think the Penguin will. But if they made it fit, Hoffman would be an excellent choice. Can't wait for the third.

Amazing actor, but they need to seriously stop making Batman movies. I mean, c'mon, we've seen them all before.
I've always loved Batman…the only superhero who is a real person acting as a superhuman…doing it for the greater good no matter the personal consequences and finally Nolan is doing it justice. Of course we all love Michael Keaton with Jack Nicholson as the joker but it was the only good one out of the whole franchise. Depp and (one of my all time personal faves) Seymour Hoffman will be brilliant and I can't wait!!!

Depp and Bale just finished filming "Public Enemies." Depp stars as John Dillinger, Bale is G-Man Melvin Purvis.
For Depp, this was a great role to choose. The kind he's capable of and ready for. Early word is that he's brilliant in this.
I think he's an amazing talent, but IMO should stay away from being further stereotyped as the go-to guy for the oddball, fey roles. I groaned when I heard about "Alice in Wonderland." He'll be great in it, but geez! How expected! For him to play The Riddler– it would be so expected. In the same way that for the last Batman series, it was "expected" that Carrey would take that role.

I think Johnny Depp is a phenomenal actor, but I don't really think he would be a good Riddler. Think back to when Heath Ledger, of all people, was cast as The Joker. Some people were furious. But it was through this unseen vessel that Ledger created his own Iconic character. I think that they should bring in someone different, a little less known. If I see Depp on the screen, i'll just think he's Depp. However, when I saw Ledger on the screen, it was obvious that it was actually Ledger.

I think Johnny would be a good pick, but I don't think they should think just cause DK made a lot of money he'll accept it. The thing bout Johnny is if he's not interested he won't take up the role. I've read that Nolan has said he won't bring the penguin in because he feels the character would be too campy for his reinvented Batman films.

i think that both are excellent, but i reckon that people will be compared to the brilliance that is heath ledger. having said that, the joker was originally meant to come back for the next one, but because of heath's sad death (R.I.P. baby!) they'll have to re-cast the villain. unless we all want to see cillian murphy again as the scarecrow guy.

im hammered, but if you look at all of the other batman movies, they all one striking characteristic: each villain shares a relationship with bruce wayne. harvey dent, ra's al ghul, maybe not so much the joker, but he was such an iconic character…anyway, following this route the next rational choice would have to be catwoman, merely because of the selena kyle/bruce wayne relationship, plus with rachel dawes out of the picture…
