As we mentioned earlier this month, reports state that the next Batman movie will feature the Riddler as the main villain.
Jim Carrey did a good job playing the last Riddler in 1995. So, who would likely take his place?
Well, some reports claim that Johnny Depp is being offered the role.
And with the success The Dark Knight has has had at the box office, making over $440 million worldwide, the producers don't think they'll have a problem convincing Depp to take the role.
A source says the producers "are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny's a pro. He'll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own."
They also plan on revisiting another one of Batman's enemies, the Penguin. And according to insiders, they are hoping the role goes to Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman.

NO NO NO. The reason why I think I loved Heath Ledger so much, was because it was a surprise factor to see him play such a dark/twisted role so perfectly! Although Johnny Depp is a good actor, we've seen the same old from him. I want to wowed in the Batman movies- and I don't think that'll wow me. Pick someone unexpected pleaseeee!

I think they need to forget the villains already explored in the other movies and use some different ones from the comic books.

fuck the penguin. Nolan should have Bane and the Riddler in his next film. Batman & Robin didn't do justice to Bane so I think Nolan should include him.
Character wise this is old news, but Depp is a great idea. Nolan already shot down the idea of doing the Penguin because he felt the character was too ridiculous and not menacing in any way, so whatever the source is, it's clearly old.

Christopher Nolan stated in an interview that he wouldn't be using Catwoman or the Penguin in any of his films. He also stated that he'd rather use Batman villians that aren't as well known, like Bane (you know him if you've read the comics). So this story is more than likely BS.
IMO, Johnny Depp wouldn't be a very good Riddler. I don't know why, because he's an excellent actor, but something about him turns me off to the part.

its important that people don't think about the villains too much. thats what happened with schumacher and the rubber nippled crusader, it becomes an extremely camp joke. i think the important questions will be over what happens to batman and gotham city, and will they recast the joker? i think heath would want them to.

i honestly can't see anyone overshadowing heath as the joker. I wish they would keep aaron eckhart on as two face and come up with a way to have him still be alive!!!! he was awesome and could have done a lot more with that character if given the time! i agree with a lot of people saying they should stick to amazing fairly unknowns. heath and aaron were both known but still very under the radar in terms of all around talent. Johnny would steal the show and make it his own & these movies are proving to be too awesome to destroy.
The girl villians suck and to be honest i can't think of a girl who could actually pull that off. it couldn't just be all sexed up it would still have to be a really dark villian to keep with the underlying themes of the new movies. Christina Ricci might be cool. or otherwise a definite unknown with REAL talent.

Depp is an excellent choice if they do choose to go the route and pick the riddler as the next villian and he has the potential of also being a dark character capable of causing mischief and creating havoc for batman much as joker did, the penguin however is a poor choice although if chosen hoffman would be an excellent choice for the character but according to what I've read and heard, Nolan didnt want to go anywhere near the penguin and personally I think the penguin is too cartoony and not a good fit for nolan's series being its nothing like burton's or schumachers

Nolan has SPECIFICALLY SAID that Penguin would be the hardest character to put into his films because, in case you haven't noticed, he is going 100% realistic. He also has never made any sort of statement saying he would use the Riddler either. The real reports say that Raz Al Ghul will be making a return (which makes sense if you know the comics he is a immortal but I'm sure Nolan will just make a more realistic reason for it) along with the Ventrilloquist.

The BEST person to play the riddler would be Howard Stern. He was rumored to be in one the earlier, lamer Batman movies years ago and they should give him another look. Hoffman would be a great Penguin!

Personally I think Depp is an awesome choice. Not sure I would bring back the penguin though, although Hoffman would do an awesome job I'm sure, but… I would like to stick to characters a little more realistic, and whereas Carrey did an awesome job with the riddler comic book/comedy wise, i think it would be awesome to make Depp's riddler dark, sinister and heinous!

Didn't Nolan say that penguin was too far fetched of a character? As for Johnny Depp being the Riddler, well he is a versatile actor and could probably pull it off, as long as he doesn't do it with the english accent he has been using for his recent movies. Had a brilliant brainwave, what about Russell Crowe for a role? Mad Hatter, Riddler something else? It would be unexpected, and who knows he may just surprise us. Whether you actually like him or not you can't deny that he doesn't do his research. He'd become the character, just see A Beautiful Mind, but not to the point of insanity.

What the makers of this new, darker string of Batman flicks are trying to do is put a much more realistic, grittier spin on things. Now Johnny Depp is a fine choice as the Riddler. If I'm not mistaken, in one of the batman comics, The Riddler and another very serious character called Hush actually worked together to destroy Batman. Great, great storyline with that, too, go look it up. As long as director Christopher Nolan stays on board to see the whole movie series through (and as long as some suck-ass director like, say, McG-Charlie's Angels Full Throttle, anyone?- doesn't take the helm), it will be a multi-film testament of greatness.
One more thing: ANGELINA AS CATWOMAN. I'm all for it! She actually is a good actress and a director such as Chris Nolan can definitely bring it out in her. Remember, she won an Oscar for her role in "Girl, Interrupted", an Emmy for her lead role in "Gia" and was nominated for her portrayal of Marianne Pearl in "A Mighty Heart". So not only does she have the looks and charisma to play Catwoman, she also has the acting chops that this new series of Batman films require.
