Then people complain when the government DOESN'T stop the bad guys and when they TRY people complain. Yes some people who are good guys will get caught in this wide net, but would you rather some good people get cough up or all the bad guys get their stuff though? FREEDOM ain't free have you not figured that out yet? Put down the peace pipe and get on the RIGHT train.

Wow Perez - if you are so concerned about the U.S. doing some "bullying", why don't you go and try to set up your website in Iran and see how far you get? If you hate the U.S. so much - you know, the country that allowed you so much freedom of speech you rake in thousands of dollars a year (and off the public too)

Re: cyn – haha… agreed. I have nothing to hide. What, are the rest of you nervous because you think they'll find your porn? Come on guys. It's for security purposes. Wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? Plus, the chances that they'll take YOUR computer or laptop are slim. They only do this to one unlucky person once in a while, mostly because the person left their laptop in a bag or didn't follow instructions. Just keep to the instructions and you'll probably be fine.

Also: to all of you crazies who keep saying "FIRST!"… It's getting very old very quickly. Why do you care whether you're first or not? You have no valid, thought-provoking comment to add, so keep your "first's" to yourselves.

I don't support the practice of holding them "for unspecified amounts of time" but I support the practice of our government taking a look at the computers to see if anything terror-related is encrypted within them. Wake up and stop blaming the government. The TERRORISTS are the reason we must forfeit so many of our liberties. Post 9/11 is a whole new world, kiddies. Suck it up and stop whining. Unless you're doing something criminal or shameful, you have no reason to be afraid of having government officials take a closer look at your computer and phone activities. As for me, I've got absolutely nothing to hide so bring it on. Whatever it takes to root out those who seek to harm us.

all this means is that they can hold them as long as they need to check anything. infront of a judge tho, they need to say that they took it for a specific reason. they cannot hold your personal objects forever, unless they cause harm to an individual. get all the facts perez, before you post another site!!

Do you realize people are upset by the long arm of the government, while we are all engaged in an election where we WANT the government to decide our healthcare. Some people live on government money (which is OUR money),the educates most Americans, now were paying for people who bought a bigger house than they could afford and we now want the government to decide who lives and who dies, but we are worried the government might take our laptops. WE REALLY ARE STUPID!

    not comparable you dumbass …

China = massive amounts of human rights violations, unchecked censorship of the internet, restrictions on travel

USA = occasionally confiscating a laptop. or ipod. for a short amount of time.

please stick to celebrities and not foolish posts about laws

    116

The most frightening of all this is the huge lack of perspective that becomes apparent. Surely no terrorist would take ALL his evil plans on ONE laptop aboard ANY US plane. And should he succeed to do so, that's your homeland security failing already, dontcha think so? With all these alarming echoes about the ailing US economy you'd think your government's priority #1 would be just that: reviving the economy. But then again, spending your tax dollars on war and 'security' have mostly been gvmnt's priority #1, hasn't it? My humble suggestion: spend some on education and environmental studies, or better yet, combine the 2! Educate your people on living environment friendly: get smart AND save trees, oil, lungs, animals… peace!x

    117

Re: nes – I just can't understand your logic, I guess that's because I'm a conservative and your a liberal. It just doesn't seem to be an either or situation. What good is your diploma or degree on the wall, if the house is burning down. It's not like we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. The Red Chinese are building a fleet of nuclear subs, who do you think they are planning to party with? America's breadbasket probably looks pretty good to BILLIONS of Chinese!

  18. Revol says – reply to this

    118

    Re: klank

You are a moron. I just would like to point that out. You need to move to China. Anyone who doesn't value their rights, doesn't deserve them. The government should NEVER have any rights to intrude on your personal freedoms, and that includes your freedom of speech and freedom of press. Your laptop is your personal property, as is your car, and your house. If the police just decided they can comesearch your house or your car whenever they please you would probably not be cool with that, but that is what it is going to be next. We are one step away from the exact government we all fear and NO ONE ever wants to do anything about it. It makes me ill. I refuse to have my rights stripped of me because people fear terrorism. It's just trading one for the other, but you are just allowing the other to happen. I pray for a revolution someday. Maybe someday the citizens of this country will no longer fear it's government and people will have their voices back.

    Re: Lis

Actually, yes they CAN force you to enter your password or key, and you MUST comply and allow them to poke around in your email and whatever the hell else they want to look at. It's one thing if it's a personal laptop and you have nothing to hide, but what if you work for the government and have classified info on your laptop? I guarantee that random TSA employees do not have security clearance, so ironically, this policy can actually THREATEN national security by exposing classified (or worse) info to people without the clearance.

  20. Megha says – reply to this

    120

Also, I wouldn't put it past the screeners to say, "Hmm…well looky here, that's a nice new MacBook Air you've got there…I think we're gonna have to confiscate that for you!" Because they CAN, with no good reason at all. If you ever think you'd see your laptop again…well, that's pretty naive. Basically, don't bring any electronic equipment overseas that you wouldn't be willing to give up for good.

I love how the people who are not from the U.S., when they put us down they don't say where they are from…what cowards! Hey, I lived in the UK for years and travelled through Europe, Russia and South Africa and was more afraid over in those places as far as my freedoms went! Why don't you people outside the U.S. say where you are from?? Because you know you are screwed as far as living anywhere but the U.S., that's why! Why else would people be in danger of being arrested in Russia for jaywalking and put into jail? Why would people be in danger of being put into jail in the UK because their trash is piled too high in the trash bin? Jealous much?

    128

you know, all you conservatives who are telling people who don't like it to leave? i would, however, the eu makes it difficult to become a citizen there. so if you can help me become a french citizen, i'd gladly leave. Sure, the united states (not america, america happens to encompass south america, central america and north america) is not the worst country in the world, but it isn't as great as the crazy conservatives seem to think. Also, the reason i'm pissed is that i don't like people looking at my shit. and if i have to sit on a 12 hour plane ride without my books or ipod, i'd be totally pissed! even though i'm not a terrorist.

  29. hanna says – reply to this

    129

also, to everyone who tells the us citizens that we are stupid and are losing our freedoms, i think we all know this, but seem to be incapable of changing it. It seems as if we have all become rather jaded and realize that silent protests and sit-ins of earlier times won't actually change anything. so what are we to do?

Re: Shay Re: lame – What is it with this "the whole world is laughing at us" s–t! There are people giving thier lives to come here. Haven't seen or heard of anybody trying to "escape" the United States on a rubber raft.

It's called a dishonest projection on his part. Whenever anyone said phrases like "Anyone" "everyone" and "The Whole world" and other extreme nonsensical phrases it means they are usually insecure and are trying to make their claims seem greater than they are.

    Classic Psych 101.

That is pretty much my feelings on it. I don't care if they look in my shiz. The ONLY people that should be concerned is people that have illegal shiz on their computer. Or like illegal porn… Perez?

You support Barack Obama, but are SHOCKED by this? Use some fucking logic! Obama voted FOR FISA in 2008, which allows this to happen.

Why don't you do some research before you so that THIS is not okay, but then support Obama.

Support progressive, underdogs… Boycott Red AND Blue!

  37. snkm says – reply to this

    137

The US has done a fantastic job placing fear into millions of its unsuspecting citizens!

So basically, our constitutional rights are void because we as Americans should just suck it up–because if another terrorist attack occurred, then we'll all complain that enough wasn't done? It surprises me that so many people are okay with the United States becoming a police state. I think there are many alternatives to weeding out terrorism than confiscating my little sisters' laptop. This country was founded on the principle of personal freedom; all of these actions the government is taking further negates our progress as a country.

And really, some of you should consider picking up a book. Obviously, many of you are unaware of your rights as an American citizen.

    Nice post Perez ;)

All of you should be interested in politics over MTV- it effects YOUR LIFE. Bush & the US Attorney General are trying to declare GLOBAL WAR (including US territory) so they can take over & attack anyone who possesses OIL- God forbid you have any family sitting on land with Natural Gas. It will also allow the government to make null and void all PROTECTED national parks and wetlands so they can drill wherever they please and leave toxic waste in your water just so you can jump in your car and continue to live your spoiled, convenient life at the expense of our soldiers blood. Please wake the fuck up or at least watch V for Vendetta. A police state is not a FREE country dumb ass.

Oh, and Bush has also slaughtered the Writ of Habeus Corpus. No, it's not a band. It's a liberty that protects citizens from being thrown in jail indefinately
without being told why and tried in a court of law fairly. But damn, so many people had their head in the X-box and Ipod that they did not know- you can officially be thrown in jail and NEVER BE TOLD WHY. Politics matter.

The *only* people here who see nothing wrong with this policy are those WHO RARELY LEAVE THEIR HOUSE. In other words, people who DO NOT TRAVEL, who spend most of their lives in their one-stoplight towns, who never visit foreign countries unless they're in a tour group or unless they're in the US military (where they spend all their time on American bases). Generally speaking, Republicans are not well-travelled, nor well-educated. Which explains their ignorance, fear, "religious" leanings, and bigotry. Any questions? I didn't think so, you fear-mongering, no-travel, ignorant hick bastards.

  41. LisaD says – reply to this

" USA G says Generally speaking, Republicans are not well-travelled, nor well-educated."

REALLY? Not educated (I have a bachelors degree in English Literature)? Not well-travelled (I lived for several years in England, travelled to Hong Kong, Russia and went on safari to Africa)? But I guess that's not enough for you!
