Minorities will soon be the majority in the U.S.
And that's a good thing! This country was built by immigrants!
The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the nation will become more diverse with minorities becoming the majority population by 2042.
The Director of Stony Brook University's Center for Regional Policy Studies says, "It's already happening on Long Island." The Hispanic population in Suffolk county has gone up 10.5% alone just since 2000.
Koppelman adds, "Hispanics are primarily drawn here by economic opportunity. If the economy remains robust on Long Island, this population will continue to expand."
Hispanic residents continue to increase nationwide as well. They made up about 12.4% of the population in 2007. That's up 10% from back in 2000.
According to the Census Bureau, minorities are approximately one-third of the nation's population right now. By 2050, however, they will grow to about 54% of the population. That would be about 133 million minorities.
The black population is also expected to rise from 14% today to 15% by 2050.
And, the Asian population will rise about 4.1% by 2050.
However, non-Hispanic whites are projected to drop from 66% now to about 46% by 2050. Their population numbers will stay around the same, going from 199.8 million today to about 203.3 million by 2050.
And, aside from ethnicities, the entire population will also be aging. By 2050, projections are that one in five Americans will be 65 years-old and older.
Perez is gonna be one of those, if he's lucky enough to still be alive! And, you can bet he'll still be blogging!
i agree with the headline… diversity rocks! im glad we're becoming more of a melting pot and i think that helps with tolerance throughout this country!
i think diversity is great. there re NO minorities where I work. I am the ONLY black there are no asians/ latinos etc. and if I was not a top producer they would fire my balck ass with a quickness. Its sad they have never even had a black manager in the entire 44 year history in California. Its the case of whites helping whites only. they are currenltly inteh shit hole too as far as production from last qtr.

It's true that on average they're darker hued (although many would like you to believe they are a blonde-hair/blued-eyed group), but they are white Europeans.

Diversity is great as along as you can understand what the fuck is being said, I say if you cant speak fluent ENGLISH (this is our native language) and abide by the rules that this country has, then you shouldnt be here. However on the other hand…Im a WHITE AMERICAN…so now can I scream discrimination, run to the welfare lines and get my fair share of the pie? Something tells me this wont happen, white may be minority but I bet you wont hear most of them screaming for White Rights, White Colleges, and advances in jobs because of our "Color" or lack of it

Well I have no problem with more educated responsible people in this country, regardless of color.
As long as we all realize the reason there will be more minorities than white people in America is because minorities tend to have larger families. White people (for the most part) have figured out how to use birth control and keep the size of their families within a range they are able to support financially. That's not to say all minorities breed like rabbits and white people don't - but the only way minorities are going to surpass white folks in a census by 2042 is if the trend of larger minority families continues. It is that simple.

Well, most of us ARE immigrants, maybe not this year, but we got here one way or another, my only quip is that people do it leagally, follow the rules, get citizenship and got forward. Pointing out that minorities will become majorites, makes them majoriteis, and we are all in this together. The only way to break the barriers is to quit putting them up.
Not that i'm not for diversity…I totally am! I wish there was more at my school. i don't mind diversity….what i do mind is ppl coming here ILLEGALLY. they wanna whine that life sucks in mexico or whatever and they came here to give their family a better life, but i don't really wanna hear it…i understand where they're coming from but they need to do things the legal way….if they don't even respect that law, why do we think they will respect any of our other laws. Well to start with let me just say I am a proud Latino. I do not support illegal immigration but I do support legal immigration. I can see how many Americans are concerned with the rise of illegal immigration and how this problem is growing out of control. Now, many White Americans voice their concerns in a rude, racist, way that insults many of us Latinos. Let me just say that if you white folks want to blame someone, start by blaming yourselves. After all, if GREEDY WHITE RICH AMERICANS would not employ illegal workers, they would not be here. The solution to the problem is simple, White Americans stop employing illegals and the illegals would just go back to wherever they came from cause they would have no work. As long as there is a demand for illegal workers (cheap labor), there will be a supply of illegal immigrants willing to come Simple Economics!!
Now on the other hand, immigrants who come into this country either legally or illegally, have a responsibility to learn English, this does not mean you should stop speaking Spanish, but it does mean you should learn English. Immigrants come into this great country with the hope for opportunity, either financial, religious, or political. Now, yes they will receive great benefits from this country but they should also give back to this country. They should contribute to this country, and the best way to start that is by learning English and to help this country stick together. Remember, a strong healthy America is better for everyone Black, White, Latino, Asian, Native American. So everyone do your part.
There will be growing pains with any new immigrant population in regards them being ignorant, possibly uneducated, and taking advantage of social services or welfare. The US and Canada rock, everyone wants to come here because most people in the rest of the world have diminished human rights and live in poverty, in countries with corrupt governments and little or no infrastructure. So when some people first come to your country, their instinct is to take advantage of the systems as much as possible. Until they realize they are American/Canadian and accept their new country as their own, and learn the language and American culture (like some readers, I agree that is getting difficult to define), America will continue to degrade. There was a shooting of a youth by police in Montreal, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The next night there was rioting and looting in that city by minorities and recent immigrants. My advice to new immigrants is to take pride in your new country, you left your old one for a reason, now embrace your new one and have some pride! And for 'white people' in the US, you have alot of bottomfeeders in your people too. There are uneducated, lazy, trailer living hicks out there. Wake up people, get a education, a job, pay your taxes, and elect responsible government! Its that easy, no matter what color your skin is!!!!!

my job requires me to go to a lot of construction sites and whenever there's legal (i know so from the main contractors) european immigrants they politely say hello (even if they don't speak much english) but if there's hispanics they'll say stuff or whistle and then freak out when they see me approaching the site with a notepad and a tape measure!!! how else can you explain this?
