It was bound to happen - Michael Phelps did it.
He TIED Mark Spitz's record of most gold medals won in one Olympic Games!!!
The U.S. swimmer took home his 7th gold in Beijing on Saturday in the 100-meter butterfly.
But, it was very very close.
Phelps clocked 1/100ths of a second faster (50.58) than his foe, Milorad Cavic of Serbia.
Now, Phelps has the opportunity to break history as he goes for his 8th gold medal.
Think he can do it???

Re: boo radley – actually it's not like basketball at all, being a completely different sport. the difference in 1st and 2nd was so small, 1/100th of a second, or a FINGERNAIL in length as they stated on tv. cavic was there first, it was unfair. but of course if he calls it out everyone looks at him as a sore loser for trying to ruin michael phelps' dream.
and yes it's true, ryan lochte is a better all around swimmer than phelps.

I could be wrong here but i'm pretty sure Mark Spitz didnt have state of the art swim suits engineered by NASA to help him to his record. you might not think it makes so much difference but since the USA swim team started using the ultra low friction suits - they have broken 48 world records - go figure.

Phelps is unbelievable. I don't think he abilities have anything to do with drugs. He's has natural talent, determination, and he practices hours every day. As far as the cheating crap, it's hard to cheat with an electronic touch pad and replays down to the 1/10th second.
Phelps is up there with Mark Spitz and his 7 Olympic gold medals, but Spitz did something amazing that lasted for 36 years without the state-of-the-art swimsuit. They are both outstanding athletes.
Mark Spitz did it without goggles and wearing a mustache!

Spitz could accept no payment whatsoever, not even a swim suit. Phelps got a million dollars from Speedo for tying Spitz's record, (although there is no way he actually won the hundred fly — look at the photo finish, look at how Phelps is still pushing water forward, e.g., still swimming, when the Serbian swimmer has already stopped — clearly, technology can go wrong, or even be rigged)… But whatever, Spitz got nothing, nada, zip for his efforts. No money, no endorsements, zero $. The athletes now are like machines, with other machines to measure their every waking muscle recovery or nutritional need, and with science and technology to help create them, all at work in a very profitable business. Go look through You Tube for Spitz's old swims, and see for yourself what it looked like then. On all counts, no comparison. No doubt Phelps is the greatest swimming machine currently, but maybe if Spitz could have earned a living at swimming, let alone earned enough money to live on for for the rest of his life, he would have swam even harder, and for a lot more years. But he wasn't a professional, like they are now.
