Michael Phelps took home his EIGHTS gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing on Sunday.
Unbelievable!
He actually did it!
The U.S. Swimmer broke Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals, the most ever one at one Olympic Games.
This time, Michael shared the gold with his teammates - the U.S. won the 4×100m medley relay.
And, they did it in world-record time!!!
It's really amazing. History.
To be the best - EIGHT TIMES IN A ROW - it's awesome and awe-inspiring!

You know, DLR, I agree with you. Phelps definitely owes 3 of his medals to his team mates in the relays. And lots of cool events and deserving athletes don't ever get covered because of the obsession with contests where Americans are likely to medal. But if you can't admit Phelps' achievement is incredible and worthy of recognition than you're allowing ant-American bias to cloud your judgement…

Being married to a Canadian and having all Canadian in-laws, I've come to realize that America-bashing is like a national sport in Canada, second only to hockey. The whole national identity is based largely on the fact that they AREN'T Americans. Too bad they don't offer medals in hating the US at the Olympics…Canada would probably sweep the podium!
And somehow they managed to make the 3 other Olympic champions he raced with look like chopped liver.
I can understand the mania, but he has other guys to thanks for a couple of those gold medals.
But way to go Michael!

I'll admit the US in none too popular around the world these days. But even as I type, decent and conscientious Americans are trying to take their country back.
In terms of vitriol and general hatred of the US, Canadians are truly in a league of their own. Believe me, I've been around and I know. People from other parts of the world seem WAY better able to make the distinction between individuals and governments.
But I can understand where you're coming from…it must be tough when nations like Cuba and Kazakhstan are beating Canada in the medal tally. I look at CBC Olympic website almost daily, and Canadians posters there seem HUGELY disappointed with the performance of their national team. What is it now, 4 whole medals? Too bad there's no ice hockey in the summer Olympics, eh?

Michael Phelps is a class act - he acknowledged he couldn't have won last night without the team effort. And he's always acknowledged how his mom was instrumental in him being where he is today.

Phelps deserves congratulations for aunique feat, but I for one feel no joy or inspiration either as a sports fan or as an American, becasue, as HipGnosis pointed out in his/her comments in the Phelps Tropic Thunder thread. Phelps is a highly-paid PROFESSIONAL athlete. I don't see this performer as competing for America, or even for himself, but for Waranco/Speedo, Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Bank of America and Visa.

It's perfectly fine and he deserves his place in the record books, but frankly I don't see much personal joy there - I can't recall ever seeing such a robotic, nihilistic athletic competitor in my years of watching competitive sports. This sports emperor may have a LZR Speedo, but he otherwise has no clothes. At least now he'll (hopefully) disappear from public view until London in 2012.

Your comments could only come from someone who has never played sports competitively - and if you have, your commentary boggles my mind. As a person who was an extremely serious athlete for roughly ten years, I can say with absolute certainty that you just can't do what Phelps and other Olympians do solely for money. Do you have any inkling of how much the man trains? Of what he has to give up to be where he is? For YEARS? Yes, he is definitely making a lot of money already and will be making even more as soon as the Olympics are over, but so will many other athletes, like Usain Bolt. Don't hold an athlete's success against him just because he earns rewards for it - because, believe me, he has definitely EARNED it. Phelps may be fortunate enough to be built for his sport, but he doesn't just jump in the pool with no training and win races.
And did it occur to you that 1) Phelps is TIRED (who wouldn't be, swimming as many races as him?) and 2) Perhaps he isn't comfortable showing a lot of emotion when he knows that the entire world is watching him? I guess you missed his reaction after the 4×100 freestyle relay - that didn't look robotic or nihilistic to me.
