The Backlash Has Begun

Filed under: Zportz > Michael Phelps > Business Blitz

phelps81.jpg

The announcement that Olympic champ Michael Phelps will be whoring Kellogg's Frosted Flakes instead of the traditional athlete's choice of Wheaties has left many perplexed and angered.

Frosted Flakes has three times the amount of sugar as Wheaties and 1/3rd the fiber.

Phelps is now being criticized by health experts who are worried about the message he'll be sending to children across America.

Nutritionist Rebecca Solomon of New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center says, "I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian. I would rather see him promoting Fiber One. I would rather see him promoting oatmeal. I would even rather see him promoting Cheerios."

Childhood obesity is becoming quite the problem in America and Phelps giving the thumbs up to sugary cereal sends the wrong message, experts say.

Phelps and his agent were probably too blinded by the money Kelloggs threw their way to take health concerns into account.

But at the end of the day it's up to mom and dad not to buy crap for their kids, right?

He's on the Corn Flakes box too, a much healthier choice. And yes, at the end of the day it is up to the parents to decide what goes into their children's mouths.
Who the fuck eats wheaties anyway

  2. 102

Re: allyk – After reading your #71 comment….I may not be THE best parent in the world (as you have insinuated), but…I can guarantee that I raised my child a helluva lot better than your parents raised you. You are a moron, who probably spent the best days of your life strapped into a short yellow bus.
    Grow the fuck up.

Re: DIJordan – typical you want to place blame on someone who actually makes sense. Go take care of your kids for fucks sake!! Seems like that might be an issue for you

  4. 104

Yes, because everyone knows Frosted Flakes alone are the true reason why the obesity rate is rising. Why should he put his image on something that he doesnt eat? Just because the norm of althetes is to go with wheaties. Obviously Phelps isnt the norm althete. Let Rebecca try and win 8 medals in one olympic game and see which box of cereal she wants at the end of the day.

  5. 105

:) frosted flake are yummy. I recently read his aim conversation with that dude from modifiedliving.com pretty funny stuff.

    106

oh they need to get over it. if the parents dont want their kids to be obese, dont buy the sugary foods and get them outside at the park or playing sports!

did they say anything when they had the olympians advertising mcdonals. i HIGHLY doubt any of them eat mcdonalds!

  7. 107

    A. Why should he lie about what kind of cereal he actually eats. I would rather children not look up to a liar, and be fat. B. Kids do not get fat by eating Frosted Flakes on the regular, and kids will not be skinny if they eat Wheaties every day. Cereal is one meal of the day, and Frosted Flakes are a lot better to promote than Pizza Hut? YEAHHHH so this is all pretty retarded, the guy is an Olympian, he isn't a leader. Just because he is in the public eye, doesn't mean he has to be someone to look up to.

  8. 108

what is the big deal? cereal is cereal. seriously, when you become someone well known in this world today. you have no say or control over your life anymore…. its ridiculous. if you want to promote your cereal as the right choice, then do it your way your damn self. why do you need michael phelps to relay the message that he doesn't believe. Maybe he eats frosted flakes and he wants kids to know that he grew up eating what they eat and you can grow up making history just like him. whats so crazy about the situation is michael phelps is an amazing athlete..older kids know who he is by face . children know michael phelps by what they hear. if you show them a cereal box with his picture, they wouldn't know who he was just by his face.

  9. 109

actually ryan lochte said that he eats at mcdonalds a lot.

  10. 110

Who cares if the cereal has more sugar? Lets cut the crap here, KIDS could give a sh*t what he does. Most kids dont even eat corn flakes anyways!

  11. 111

    Re: jthrasher
actually there's an all you can eat mcdonalds buffet at the olympic village… ryan lochte (best body ever) says its all he's eating for bfast lunch and dinner. ny times ran a teeny pic on the bottom of the sports section yesterday of phelps stuffing his piehole with a tray full of mcd's fries and whatnot.

  12. 112

and another thing, A LOT of athletes support gatorade, do people know how many calories / grams of sugar is in that drink !? why aren't they being picked on ?

michael phelps is amazing, he can support whatever the hell he wants.

  13. 113

He said on tv he lovesssssss fast food.

  14. 114

Re: kiwic73 – exactly. michael even said the first meal he was going to eat after his 8th race was a huge hamburger and some fries from mcdonalds.

  15. 115

    Are these people being serious?!

McDonalds and Coke are sponsers of the Olympics and people are up in arms about the fact that Phelps is on the boxes of Frosted Flakes instead of something that's healthier??

Please. If you're going to complain about something like that, make sure you're not making yourself sound stupid.

  16. 116

    .
It pisses me off when the critics start on stupid shit.
    .
Parents are the ones that need to take responsibility into their own hands.
    .
Stop pointing the finger at everyone else.
    .
It's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to him… as it would be to 99% of the people wagging their fingers at him if in the same situation.

Re: DIJordan – i would know this because i have single handedly raised a child by myself from birth. he has NEVER EVER been in trouble at school. never have i received letters saying he needed detention.ever. let alone a staurday detention. the first half of your comment is about poor you and whining about how what a problem your child was. his colic keeping you awake, spitting up on your clothes. have you ever heard of putting a towel on your shoulder? or getting dressed after you burped him? you sound like a distant mother who is not even remotely interested in their child and therefore you get the attention seeking behavior you yourself outlined in your own comment. get over yourself. your child deserves more than what you are offering. i hope he rises above his upbringing, or lack thereof.

  18. 118

He has ADHD, of course he's going to crave sugar - give him a break ppl

  19. 119

Who fuckin cares…..I mean jesus…..so the guy will put his name on something he might actually eat….does anyone other than freakin old people eat wheaties anymore.. yeah thats it a freakin bowl of Frosted Flakes is going to make a skinny kid fat or a fat kid fatter…..parents out there don't let your little fattie have the whole damn box of Frosted Flakes help them learn MODERATION!

  20. 120

who cares what box he's on he's fucking hot!!!!!

  21. DLR says – reply to this

    121

Now that you mention it Perez, it is curious why Phelps would pimp himself out to products that do not use whole/multi grains. Yeah, Wheaties isn't all that cracked up to be, but it is low in sugar, sodium, and has multi-grain products in it. Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes are high in sugar, sodium, and are made with enriched grains. I wonder how much money Phelps got? Maybe he actually eats FF and CF and that's why he was willing to "whore himself" out to them and the money is an extra bonus? I mean isn't that what he'd do, if he actually uses or eats something he'd put his name to the product. So yeah, if Phelps doesn't eat Wheaties then why endorse it? Ah, wonderful, so kids will get fatter yet, and Perez, yes you would assume parents are the ones that decide what their kids eat, but when you're faced with a howling and yelling kid in the middle of the aisle at the grocery store, you'd be surprised how fast health-conscious parents will cave in simply because Phelps' picture is on the box.

  22. 122

wheaties suck, frosted flakes rock. who gives a shit!

  23. 123

Have they not heard the reports on how this man eats. He burns almost 4,000 calories a day. He eats around 12K a day. If you seen the report on where he eats and what he eats. Wheaties would not be a good choice to go with. He does not eat healthy and he admits to it.

  24. 124

Get over it people, who the hell eats wheaties….NOBODY!!! We only like them for the pic on the box! Besides…..Have you seen the kind of crap Phelps eats from day to day…..whatever he wants up to 10,000 calories a day. Mike Phelps is not raising your children…..your children are obese because you see the GOLDEN ARCHES and pull over for them instead of cooking at home…you buy them video games and let them sit ther all day and play it, get outside and walk, stop blaming other people for your "gland" problem.

  27. 127

Michael Phelps isn't going to make your kids fat. Why in America do we always have to blame someone for something we do to ourselves.

  28. 128

Look what he eats ! Phelps eats alot of shit so why should he have to eat Wheaties if he doesn't want to !

  29. 129

its a damn cereal! people take things too seriously

  30. 130

this is pretty rediculous, sure KIDS are fat, but its up to the parents to EXERCISE their kids and take them to the park.
as well they choose what they buy their kids.
stupid people, he can promote what he wants to, you jsut have tooo much time on your hand criticizing what celebrities do.
    FOOLS.

  31. 131

Re: DLR – just because a kid is yelling and screaming it doesnt mean you should give in. yes your kid might be upset that you didnt buy them the cereal they want but as a parent your kids health should be more important then if they are upset with you or not.

  32. 132

Re: jthrasher – You sir, would be incorrect. We can eat whatever the heck we like!

  33. 133

The damn food nazis need to STFU! If parents want to buy the cereal, it is their choice. I happen to like Frosted Flakes over Wheaties. Michael can choose to endorse whatever product he wants. Maybe he has always loved Frosted Flakes!

  34. 134

MSNBC, a news source that I trust FAR MORE than you…said it was Cornflakes…so, maybe you should stop your bitching, Perez. Phelps is in 1 million times better shape than you!

  35. 135

    RE: DIJordan

Well, you know what they say: Everybody has their opinions. That was mine and yours is yours.

I eat Wheaties but need A LOT of sugar on them to make them palatable for me. The Frosted Flakes are the BOMB with peanut butter toast too… it kind of offsets that sweetness (which I love anyway.)

NO, I'M NOT FAT, and never have been. So, peeps, please don't call me a fattie.

  36. 136

He's promoting frosted flakes and regular corn flakes as well. He WAS on a Wheaties box after Athens, but then they revoked his deal after his DUI arrest. Which makes me wonder if they reached out to him again, and if they did how that convo must have gone lol. Either way, who cares? He has repeatedly said he wants to promote the sport of swimming and make it more visible (other then when its time for the Olympics) and appearing on a cereal box kids actually eat is more in line with that goal then Wheaties.

  37. 137

Frosted Flakes are so much better than Wheaties.

  38. 138

omfg this is rediculous who the hell cares what kind of cereal his face is one, im sure he doesnt, its all about moeny and clearly frosted flakes gave him more, its not his responsibilty to keep kids from getting fat, its their parents, putting that kind of pressure on him is rediculous, let him enjoy his wins and stop criticizing him!

  39. 139

He should be whoring the special Olympics…he looks retarded…and I mean that with all respect… but he does… If i wouldn't have known that he was competing in the actual Olympics, I would think I was watching the special Olympics.

  40. 140

Re: DanaMarie=] – r u serious? he looks like he has some form of autism…

  41. 141

Are you aware his middle name used to be Hussein but he changed it to Millhouse?

  42. 142

Sorry food police, Frosted Flakes are delicious!

  43. 143

omg…whats the big fucking deal..so what

  44. 144

I agree with Perez, It's up to parents to buy healthy stuff for their kids not Michael Phelps and if you're an adult you should just no better!
Besides, Phelps can eat whatever he wants he swims for 6-8 hours a day and eats 12,000 calories a day!!!!

  45. 145

We should be concerned about the message celebrities are sending kids, such as "have kids without a mother/father", "drink and drive", "jump from one toxic relationship to another", not about what cereal Michael Phelps eats. This guy won 8 gold medals while Frosted Flakes was part of his diet. I wouldn't be too concerned about him. The Wheaties people should have offered him more money if they wanted him.

  46. RD says – reply to this

    146

    he needs more Frosted Flakes

  47. 147

OH the FIBER !! ahahaha that fiber should be for the grandmas…not kids& young adults!! Kellogs Cereal is dishing out the $$$ for super Olympian Phelps $$$ If kids ate Kellogs cereal instead of 2000 caloriemeat&salad meals & gaining all their weight at the age of 10 ,USA would'nt have fat kids & even fatter adults. Michaeal is super hot & super fit! Work out like a true Champion….love you Michael Phelps!! :) :)

  48. 148

In the Words of the great Al Gore "ARE U CEREAL?" Who the hell cares . sides I happen to enjoy some Frosted Flakes every now and then and that ain't a crime. If Phelps likes His Frosties then let him be. Can't we have some truth to any advertisement. He probably doesn't eat Wheaties Damn people get a grip. Phelps set an Olympic record isn't that enough ?_ Shut the Fudge up already about the dag on cereal geeez!

  49. 149

Olympians can eat whatever they want and be fit!!!!! He rocks my world! Wheaties sucks. Frosted Flakes loses the sugary taste in milk.

  50. 150

When I need to take a dump I just pour a box of raisins on my Pop-Tarts. Works like a charm every time.

  51. 151

Oh brother, there are more important things to worry about than frosted flakes vs wheaties. how bout, hey, are your kids on crack? worry about that, or hey, are your kids, the ones youre bitching about eating a little sugar with their cereal, (dont you put sugar on bland ole icky wheaties anyway??) are your kids selling their adhd drugs or are they crushing em up and snorting em themselves? I mean really! pffffffftttt…ew, I got a little spittle on my self……thats hard to say!

  52. 152

What if he just fucking likes Frosted Flakes more.. I know its a stretch.. but wtvr.. fuck those fatass american kids.. he won 8 gold medals for the country.. they should follow in his footsteps and get off their lard asses and swim if they want to emulate his actions not eat frosted flakes cuz he's on it.. anyways.. i like frosted flakes cuz they're greeaaaat!

  53. 153

thats funny, because I thought he was on the cover of Corn Flakes, not frosted flakes. Corn Flakes has no sugar on them. And honestly who cares!!!

  54. 154

It's his choice to promote whatever he wants. Rebecca Solomon should leave him alone, and so should everyone else. Who cares what he endorses? I've never bought any item of food because a celebrity endorsed it, it's always about the taste or nurtitional value. Michael Phelps should endorse whatever the heck he wants!

  55. 155

Mmm… that box was Corn Flakes… NOT Frosted Flakes…. There is a difference!

  56. 156

If you don't want your kids to eat Frosted Flakes, then don't feed them effing Frosted Flakes!! So what he wants to endorse FF; from what I heard, he's getting a great deal from them. Maybe FF was his fave cereal growing up; maybe he still eats it! Big effing deal!! Let him do what he wants; he is allowed that… OOOOH, THE WHEATES PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED!! BFD!!!!!Why the eff are people even discussing this? Why the eff am I?

  57. 157

His body is so perfect but the face. So-so. Just being honest…

  58. 158

Sure, he's promoting a not so healthy cereal, BUT the fat ass kids shouldn't look to him as a cereal promoter, but a bad ass athlete. Fatty's need to stop eating unhealthy and swim!

  59. 159

OK, in the end it all comes down to calories in/ calories out right? You must burn more calories than you eat. That said, a bowl of frosted flakes has 140 CALORIES. 140. thats it. There are more calories than that in a f-ing soyjoy bar. So quit being so nutritionazi and understand that frosted flakes are not that bad for you.

  60. 160

What is wrong with these people? Since when did Mr. Phelps agree to be every kids personal pediatrician? Hello?!! He won eight gold medals, he can do what ever the heck he wants. His diet is not all that healthy anyway but he still works it off. i think that is another message to kids. Eat what you want responsibly, and have fun working it off.

  61. kmo says – reply to this

    161

I'm just wondering why there is such a big deal over Phelps endorsing Frosted Flakes when MCDONALDS IS ALLOWED TO SPONSOR THE OLYMPICS!?! What kind of message is THAT sending to people?

  62. 162

hahahha wow this is beyond dumb. children were obese before michael phelps. children will still be obese after.

  63. 163

    Re: DIJordan

Okay, seriously. Um, you had a kid. Congradufuckinglations. Good for you. Just a reminder, being a parent is no big deal. I'm so sick of people complaing, or saying I'm a parent, blah, blah, blah. I do this, I have to do that… Umm, who's fault is that? Not our's.

If you and your kid don't like sugar cereal. Ok, I'm fine with that. But please to try to comment how hard it is to get your kids to do something. Even though I'm not a parent, it takes a village to raise a child. I have raised three.

And remember, no one is special because they have children. Even dogs have kids that they take care of.

    164

I read he eats 12,000 calories a day, including a few pancakes, french toast, and tons of eggs. So, maybe frosted flakes isn't that far fetched, because his real diet is cholesterol heavy and gross. If he didn't swim 5 hours a day he'd weigh a ton!

  65. 165

    "food of an olympian" huh..
    he went w/the most$.of course

  66. 166

frosted flakes isn't what is making kids fat, lack of physical activity is…

  67. 167

who cares if it isnt healthy!
    they are soooooooooo much better

  68. 168

IT'S CEREAL!!!!!!! WHO CARES?!?!!?!? I don't think I have even seen a Wheaties box in I dont know how long…these "nutritionists" need to get over themselves…Did you know Cocoa Pebbles is the same calorie count as Frosted Mini Wheats??? Besides…Michael Phelps has a 12,000 calorie diet a day…I doubt he gives a crap what is healthier…maybe if everyone got off their fat ass and worked out they wouldn't care about a fucking cereal box!!! LAMEEEEE!!!!

  69. 169

    Who cares. THEY'RE GRRRRRREAT!!!!!

  70. 170

Oh, please. People are grasping at straws. Go where the money is. Their products are not THAT bad.

  71. 171

lol they really think a half naked guy on a box of cereal is going to affect children?? i dont know know one kid that actually eats wheaties…… i never did as a child either! and my son sure as hell doesn't! he's all about the fruit loops ^_^

  72. 172

that nutritionist needs a life. bitch please, so you're blaming michael for obesity. blame the freaking parents!

  73. 173

politically correct, shove my carrots down your throat overly nutritional people are getting on my last nerve, im not sayinjg shove 20 cupcakes down your throat but or fucks sake wheaties and fiber 1 taste like ass and frosted flakes taste much better

LIVE A LITTLE GOD DAMN IT

these people worry about every last thing

  74. 174

OMFG–I think it's great—-what do you want him to promote? The yogurt that makes you poop?

Have you heard what the guy eats in a day, when you exercise like he does, I seriously doubt a bowl of cereal matters.

Besides, why should Wheaties corner the market on the athletes?

  75. 175

It is totally up to the parents!! My daughters love Disney Princesses but I am NOT going to buy the Princesses Cereal that is basically Lucky Charms!! So many people do not care how much High Fructose Corn syrup they are feeding their children!!! I am proud of MP for all his work, but him being on a box of cereal isn't going to make me buy it.

  76. 176

ppl need to suck it… its cereal!

  77. 177

When is it going to come out that he is GAY

Gosh do you ever hear him talk about a GIRLFRIEND. No it's always his mother and sister.

  78. 178

    this is just plain stupid…

  79. 179

God I guess he might just be straight

  80. 180

    i agree w/ Pixie Peet

  81. 181

IT'S THE PARENTS THAT BUY THE STUFF ~ SO IT'S REALLY UP TO THEM! AND FROSTED FLAKES ARE MOTHERFUCKENGGGGRRRRRRRREAT!

  82. 182

Cereal is probably one of the healthier things a child can eat for breakfast besides fruit. ALSO, CAN AMERICAN PARENTS STOP EXPECTING HOLLYWOOD TO RAISE THEIR CHILDREN!?!? Maybe if these parents were great enough role models THEMSELVES, their children wouldnt have to go to fake superficial morally twisted hollywood to find role models. At the end of the day, you have no one to blame for the way your children are but yourself. You are their parents and no one else. You are the only one who was given the responsibility to take care of them and teach them. SO GO DO IT AND DO A GOOD JOB!!!
AND I think that winning record breaking number of gold medals at the Olympics at the age of 23 makes Michael Phelps a good enough role model even though he has his face on a cereal with a lil more sugar and a lil less fiber. Did these critics stop to think about the dedication and discipline he represents??

  83. 183

you're right perez, it's up to the consumer if they wanna be fat or not. The nutrition info is right there on the box. It is not Phelps' problem if people aren't getting enough fiber.

  84. 184

Re: jlove – LOL!! I was going to say the exact same thing.. I can't belive people are getting worked up over FROSTED FLAKES when McDonalds is like one of the biggest "Olympic partners" saaaaad… I'm almost sure most athletes wont eat that shit! Maybe once in awhile.. lol..

  87. 187

Who doesn't like Frosted Flakes? They're great!!!

  88. 188

Isn't it obvious that Michael Phelps eats a diet soley of Frosted Flakes? He's a Frosted Flake; either that or a retard. Oh yeah, he's a retard.

  89. 189

You know Michael is the one who one the medals and he should be able to endorse the products he chooses. He's the one whose income will go from 5 million to a minimum of 50 million this year. Who the heck cares. It's not His job to promote eating habits. It's up to the parents for the love of pete. This was on Fox Facebook today too and Yahoo home page. It's just not our call and his face will be all over the place, so get use to it and shut up. He's the one who swam four years day after day training his arse off [literally] and we have a choice to buy what we want. It's not his job to worry about the amount of sugar people eat. Give me a break…..GGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr says Tony The Tiger and I love Frosted Flakes.

Just getting on here and news flash n case it's not on here RICKY MARTIN had twins by a SURGATE no less, in other words no sex , a while ago…Didn't say if boy or girl. SHITE, all the rumors were right….he led alot of females on and still doesn't admit he likes men. Ricky needs to fess up while Livin La Vida Loca as countless females hearts are breaking…. marci.ct.

  90. 190

frosted flakes are the shit!&they are even better if hes advertisin them;) hes a HOTTiE i wonder how much they paidd himm?

  91. 191

He can have his frosted flakes and eat them too!

  92. 192

    I fucking love Frosted Flakes!
You can still be healthy and eat a little sugar now and then…example: Michael Phelps.
    .
Did anyone give crap to Shaq when he endorsed the chocolate bars? Sugar is not the enemy. Excess is.

  93. 193

Child obesity is not due to Frosted Flakes. It's due to a lack of exercise and eating fatty foods. Frosted Flakes is not fatty its is chock full of omega 3 fatty acid, and bodybuilding. ,www.muscleindian.com so ppl need to STFU! Anyway, the parents are the ones buying the product, if they think it's such a problem, don't buy it.

  94. 194

Please we all know GODS can do No wrong. All H!!!ail Michael

  95. 195

I agree with natamaxxx305. Seriously celebrities AND athletes are featured on McDonald's and Soda commericals all the time and Phelps gets the shaft? That's fucking ridiculous. It's fucking cereal.

  96. 196

Why Is It that when he is photograph it seems like he dares us to come and pull his speedos down?

Maybe its just me but its like he knows that what we want and reacts to the camera that way?

  97. 197

Goodness gracious, you don't get fat eating a bowl of frosted flakes every morning; you get fat for eating your every lunch in McDonalds, kids.

  98. 198

People are seriously angry over this? Um..they need to get lives FAST. Why aren't they angry about the genocide in Darfur?

  99. 199

How absurd! This coutry is really starting to suck. Did anyone consider that maybe he eats Frosted Flakes? And gee, he seems to be doing okay! Maybe if the fat f*cks in this country focused on the big picture of parents actually doing their jobs, we wouldn't be a nation of porkers. Michael is free to do what he wants, no matter what whiney bulls*it the fu*cktards try to present as fact.
