Race To Kill Death

Filed under: Film Flickers > Legal Matters

dr.jpg

Looks like the little guy's getting screwed again.

A writer named Adam Stone claims that the producers of the flick Death Race, out this week, stole his ideas.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Stone claims in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles federal court that the movie is based on a script he pitched to the film's producer-director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt.

Stone says that after the producers passed, Bolt made and kept a copy of his screenplay, titled Joust, to use as a "blueprint" for Anderson's revision of the script for Death Race.

If it's true, that sucks!

He seeks a court order stopping the film's release (scheduled for August 22).

Stone is also seeking unspecified damages.

Why did he wait ’til so close to the film's release date to file the claim?

Hope he has a good lawyer!

P.S Perez: I live in Saskatoon Canada, and one of our Radio stations rips all of its " celebrity juice" of you! everytime i read a new article its only a matter of minutes until the radio at my desk announces the exact same article and uses all of your details.

  9. 9

what's the issue? this movie looks like a ripoff of the video game Twisted Metal anyway :p

  10. 10

this movie looks fucking awesome !! Re: shelbz115 – so there…lol

  11. 11

based off a really crap sylvester stallone movie, anyways.

  12. 12

    Re: shelbz115

I'm going to guess by the people you like; i.e., Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brother, etc., you're too young to see this movie anyway. Does mommy even know you're on the computer little girl?
Now go watch your pathetic Hannah Montana bullsh*t and leave the grown-ups to talk.

  13. 13

Re: Valyntyne – Well if it looks like shit…. don't go see it! Wow, isn't that a difficult conclusion to come moron!
I suppose someone from Saskatoon would know what shit looked like, since there's nothing but shit there.

  14. 14

How can a company steal an idea for this movie, when it's a REMAKE???!!!! D'uh….

  15. 15

FFS…why don't the originators of scripts, ideas and inventions…get witnesses, attorneys and notary publics to sign off their work, before they start peddling them?
Hopefully, this guy learned a valuable lesson…for the next time.

  16. 16

    What a gold digger.

Death Race is a remake of Death Race 2000 (released in 1975). Paul W.S. Anderson, who wrote and directed the current iteration, is friends with Paul Bartel, who directed the first one.

  17. 17

Re: bgart13 – I didn't realize that this was a remake of Death Race 2000, until I read your comment (and, did a little research).
Gawd, I remember seeing that movie, at a drive-in, when my mom thought that I was sleeping in the backseat. I will never forget when that car ran over the baby carriage, for the extra points.
    But, I digress…
Unless Adam Stone wrote the original screenplay…he has no rights to this one. Plain and simple.

  18. 18

I thought that this was a redo of Death Race 2000.

This is hardly an original idea…

  19. 19

well im sorry if u don't like the movie but Tyrese Gibson looks like sum hot sexy chocolate. U hav got 2 give it up 4 him lol

  20. 20

Re: Snobby – you dumb bitch did you even notice half the other post saying its shit. its an opinion commentary. get a fuckin clue.

Author Staci Robinson is suing The CW, its owners and some producers for $40 million for allegedly stealing the concept of her published novel "Interceptions" to create the sitcom "The Game," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The writer claims that in 2001, she had interviewed for a job as a writers assistant at Kelsey Grammer's Gramnet Prods. when she gave a manuscript of her novel to "Game" executive producer Mara Brock Akil. The suit, filed Sept. 14, alleges that the series copies her premise and the characters in the book.

She names the CW and its owners, CBS and Warner Bros., Akil and Gramnet as defendants. Besides the hefty monetary damages, Robinson is seeking a temporary restraining order to keep the network from premiering the show on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Both the written and filmed versions center on a woman who is devoted to an NFL player, but wants to pursue her professional schooling.

  22. 22

The whole movie reminds me of a video game my brother used to play- Twisted Metal…all the racers were competing for 'one wish'…generally involving their freedom. And they raced in cars that killed the other racers…so boo hoo to his 'stolen ideas'.

  23. 23

WTF? This guy didn't register his script with WGA and then just handed it over. Nice job.

  24. 24

The movie looks dumb as hell and looks as if the majority of the plot line revolves around the same material The Running Man focused on, which I'm sure was stolen from another idea or remake or what not… so who stole who's idea??? I haven't seen AN ORIGINAL idea come out of Hollywood in a long time!!

  25. 25

I would wait until the last minute too. It would sting more to have a movie halted JUST before it's release. That's pretty low if it is true

  26. 26

i saw the trailer it wasnt exciting at all….such a shame it could have been made alot better

  27. 27

isn't this just a remake of Death Race 2000 with David Carradine

  28. SWFxx says – reply to this

    28

    this is ridiculous!
this movie is based on the older movie DEATH RACE 2000 look it up!
    P.S.
my mom's in this move, so back the fuck off.

  29. 29

I think the whiny writer should get a VHS tape of the Wonderful Paul Bartel's Deathrace 2000 and shove it far up his ass. How creative does this guy really think he is?

  30. fbond says – reply to this

    30

Well he can get a court order if he wrote the Sylvester Stallone movie Death Race 2000 that came out in the late 70's…horrible flick but it's been done!

  31. fbond says – reply to this

    31

Oh, it was Paul Bartel who directed it, and it was 1975. Is Paul suing?
Also David Carradine was in it, during the Kung Fu years

  32. 32

I thought this movie was a remake of the Dasvid Carrodine movie, Death Race 2000? It's basically the same concept. How can this dude take credit for a movie that's over 30 years old?

  33. 33

at first I thought this movie was based on the game Twisted Metal…

  34. 34

Its totally a rip off of twisted medal!!!!
    the exact same consept
Twisted Medal "It is the year 2010; desecration and madness have spread across the cities like a plague. You are the fastest and toughest car commando alive, and your forced to compete in contests of brute force and survival."

Movie "Statham) is forced by the warden of a notorious prison (Allen) to compete in our post-industrial world's most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory."

  35. apoca says – reply to this

    35

    But still… Jason Statham….yumm!!!!

  36. SWFxx says – reply to this

    36

seriously, all of you people who are saying it's based on video games, or other movies are obviously not listening
THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON DEATH RACE 2000, nothing else.
i have seen it and its a shit load of fun. don't judge something until you see it.

  37. 37

well, that's the first i've even heard about that movie. didn't know anything about it until now.

  38. 38

See this is the type of crap that pisses me off! This apparently "original" script by Adam Stone is actually just a re-make of the 70's action flick "Death Race 2000" starring David Carradine. The only difference is that it takes place in a prison rather than on the open road.

  39. 39

I hope the real writer Adam Stone Wins!

  40. 40

…But "Death Race" (titled "Death Race 2000") was originally released in 1979. Yeah, good luck with that lawsuit.

  41. 41

    Re: SWFxx
"my moms in this move(ie?) so back the fuck off"

Your mom must be REALLY desperate, huh? This movie looks TERRIBLE.

  42. 42

This movie was already made in the 70's or early 80's with Stallone. It was called Death Race 2000.

  43. SWFxx says – reply to this

    43

    Re: Than Thou
    wow, you really sadden me.
excuse me for defending my parents
im really sorry you have such a…limited taste.
    good luck in life.

  44. 44

Re: Snobby – she never said anything about going to see it so maybe you should actually read what they said before you try to be all cool and talk crap

  45. 45

roger corman's version was much better. for you youngins, it was made in 1975 and starred david carradine.
