NBC's Olympic Coverage = Homophobic?

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Australiastic > Zportz > Media Minute

mattmitcham.jpg

NBC's got some explaining to do!

We cheered when Australia's Matthew Mitcham, the only openly male gay athlete who competed at the Beijing Games, scored Olympic gold.

However, we're jeering at NBC because - unlike their coverage of hetero athletes' relationships - the network never mentioned the Aussie's boyfriend/longtime parter during their coverage of the Mitcham story.

NBC did not mention Mitcham’s orientation, nor did they show his family and partner who were in the stands. NBC has made athletes’ significant others a part of the coverage in the past, choosing to spotlight track athlete Sanya Richards’ fiancee, a love triangle between French and Italian swimmers and Kerri Walsh’s wedding ring debacle.

What's up with that, NBC?

Gay relationships = not the same as straight ones????

Why shoud They mention someones bedmate?

  3. 103

    wow who cares

  4. 104

Greg Louganis would be a great diving commentator and they choose not not to use him either! Such a bunch of crap!!!!

  5. 105

Who cares!? In over two weeks of coverage they mentioned only a handful of relationships. All were about Americans, the couples mentioned outside of that were "Olympic" relationships. That means they met because of the games.
Or..NBC should just come out and tell it like it is, the overwhelming majority of Americans do not want to see that shit and are tired of having it shoved down their throats….no pun intended.

NBC did an over all shit job of the coverage and I am glad they will not get the job again for awhile. They knew he was gay and they gave in to the powers that be. They helped the Chinise gymnist ages be covered up. The overall coverage of the games and the games times NBC killed the momemtum for the games through bad guidence of when what what going on at what time. The advertised but not the Olympics. NBC SUX

  7. 107

Nope,it sure doesn't. Who cares about his significant ass smasher. Just swim damn it!

He's cute, I'm so happy that he won a gold medal

  10. 110

The pictures from the olympics come from a common feed, with each country/tv network adding their own commmentary, so you can't blame them for not showing his family/partner much.

  11. 111

Sorry Perez- not everyone is ready to hear about gay couples. There are a lot of conservative christians out there. To be honest, I'm not ready. I can take it in small doses. But I'm not ready to be bombarded with it. Homosexuality is counter culture and it takes a while for counter culture things to be absorbed into the mainstream.

But I was excited about him and his diving.

  12. 112

I'm thinking you're trying to see something here that doesn't exist, Perez, love.

It WAS a great story, and a GREAT win, don't get me wrong, but he IS Australian.
I don't think it has anything to do with homophobia.

Besides, wouldn't that make an even better report?
I'd MUCH rather hear about a young gay boy seeing this great success than some boring hetero relationship.

  13. 113

Re: Herbert West – YOU, DEAR, DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY…YOU ACTUALLY REPRESENT AN EVER SHINKING MINORITY AND IT OBVIOUSLY SCARES THE BEJEZZUS OUT OF YOU…AND WHILE I ACTUALLY AGREE WITH YOU THAT NBC DIDN'T HAVE ALL THAT MANY FAMILY POFILES AND MOST WERE EITHER AMERICANS OR COUPLES WHO MET THROUGH THE OLYMPICS…MENTIONING MATTHEW'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS LOVING PARTNER WOULD HAVE IN NO WAY CONSTITUTED SHOVING GAY RELATIONSHIPS DOWN THE PUBLIC'S THROAT.

  14. 114

No wonder my gaydar went off the radar anytime he was on screen! He was really good, what an amazing dive he did at the end, I was so happy for him when he won the medal. Maybe NBC didn't cover his relationship because he's Australian? NBC seemed to be mostly focused on Americans, hence why they mostly only covered sports the USA was strong in.

  15. 115

I'd rather hear about Matthew's committed relationship that a skanky love triangle! Wake up, US media!

  16. 116

Mountains out of molehills. NBC's coverage was indeed biased. But not against homosexuals. Rather, it was biased against Non-Americans. NBC's focus were interviews with US medalists & the athletes who underperformed and did not medal rather than interviews with any medalists from other countries. As a Canadian whose only choice was to watch the American coverage, it was quite obvious that NBC only cared to show all things American. I would have loved to have seen follow up interviews with Usain Bolt of Jamaica or the Australian gold medalists for swimming, but I have long accepted that as long as NBC is covering the Olympics, other countries & their winners do not matter.

Oh get real Perez. Of course homosexual relationships are not the same as heterosexual ones. There's that whole biological factor ya know. Butts weren't made for putting members into, or fists, or light bulbs for that matter. Homosexuality is not a lifestyle. It is simply abnormal sexual activity. For males it happens to be quite harmful, hence the early ages of death for homosexual males. Have you ever seen the anus of a middle aged homosexual? It's a sad, sad thing. The healed rips, the lack of sphincter tone. These men cannot hold in their stool because their anuses are gaping. We are so sick of the homosexuals pushing their agenda down the throats of the American people (sort of like the way that man put his big thing down your throat when you were little). The only difference is that some of us are never gonna like it.

  18. 118

I like you — a lot! and LUV this website. But don't you think maybe if you didn't portray gays as being freaks, like Samantha R & LL and KR knight and his BF there would be more acceptance. I would have to say you should start with your own website first before you throw stones. Ellen and Portia are on the cover of People this week.

I think people are confused what Perez is talking about here. It isn't that NBC didn't talk about Mitcham's sexuality, they did not give him the same kind of respect they gave other athletes. It isn't because Mitcham isn't American, NBC did the same for several other athletes from other countries. When they'd pan over the audiences or talk about an athlete. For example, Bolt, when he went over to his mum in the stands, NBC identified everyone, there's Bolt's mother, his brother, his cousin. They did that for Phelps. There's his mother, his two sisters. They talked about Stephanie Rice and Eamon Sullivan breaking up before the Olympics, etc., etc. When they talked about Mitcham, they said, oh there's his mother and completely ignored Lachlan sitting right beside Mitcham's mother. They didn't say, and there's Mitcham's partner (or boyfriend). So yeah, I think that's what Perez is talking about, not advertising one's sexuality but simply giving same-gender relationships the same respect as opposite-gender relationships when the network is identifying an athlete's family and partners. Anyway, yay for CBC for actually pointing out Lachlan as Mitcham's boyfriend, then again same-gender marriage is legal and same-gender relationships are seen as common-law with every right such as pensions, hospital visitation, custody of children, etc. Yay for Canada! :D

  20. 120

Gay relationships = not the same as straight ones????

Well duh. That is why there are different names for them. One can end in pregnancy BTW.

  21. 121

Re: Girl Unimpressed The CBC (canadian broadcasting corp). their coverage is always awesome, indepth and they NEVER shy away from any kind of story. Matthew Mitcham's b/f was mentioned a couple of times during the CBC coverage of his win, and it was no big deal

Maybe it's just that America could care less who is sticking their parts in who? They came to watch the Olympics. Not to get a US weekly story on the people in them. Thanks for the warning about CBC though. I'll make sure to block that one.

  25. 125

If people really had a "who cares" tude towards him being gay, the coverage would have said his parents and boyfriend are cheering him on,but nbc played towards safe bigotry and thats not how we effect positive change,is it? And since their have been so many stories about boyfriends, significant others wouldnt it have been nice to be the first reporter to break the bigotry silence level and say that hes gay, must exposing one to be gay only comes up under negative circumstances. So while true not every profiled gold winner got a story on nbc,but they could have shown guts and been the first ones ever to talk about someone being gay and their close one,and especially since hes out and has been open about it ,it would have been the right thing to do. And for the bigots in here like kevin kkk ,we shouldnt deprive people of equal rights because some fascist conservative christians dont like it,if thats the case black would still be second class citizens, like your people wanted back then.

Re: PerezIsRetarded – FUCK OFF, you ignorant, ill-informed FUCK. 'Nuff Said. No need to waste any more time on your worthless, piece of shit, poor excuse for a human being ASS. Oh and suck McCain's DICK while you are at it.

  27. 127

Re: Suzi – Suzi, you need to get over your homophobic self.
You can join the other poster and eat McCain's ass while they are sucking his dick. How's THAT for disgusting gay things shoved down your throat?

  28. 128

Re: KevinK – Oh okay, Kevin. We won't talk about it, until you conservative Christians are ready to talk about it. When might that be??
Yeah, that's what I thought. Deal with it. We have to hear all the Bible thumpers preaching right and left at peoples funerals, because they don't approve of someone's sexuality, so you can deal with this I think…

    1. I don't care if you talk about it. But bringing it up in a situation that is irrelevant is silly. It's just a "Heeeeeeeeaay BTW I am gay! LOOK AT MEEEE!" type of thing. Which most people find really really pretentious drama queening. More people actually dislike this than they do actual homosexual acts.

    2. I have been talking about homosexual issues for YEARS in the right context. No problem.

    3. The group you are talking about are a single group of nutjobs that basically all of America rejects as being legit Christians. And certainly don't show the view of most christians in the US. So be mad at THEM. Not Christians as a whole. But it's obvious because you did what you just did, you just have a chip on your shoulder because Christianity says homosexual sex = wrong. And you don't like that.

Well guess what, the Islamic bible tells me I am going to hell too. I could not care any less.

    What makes us two different?

  31. 131

Re: KevinK – Thanks! And congrats to you for being a completely ignorant piece of shit!

  32. 132

Re: Moluver Thanks! And congrats to you for being a completely ignorant piece of shit!

Yeah I didn't figure you'd have any valid way to respond to me that wasn't full of hate and bigotry. Congratulations. You have become the very people you hate.
