Although I'm sure Michelle was carefully coached in the presentation of her speech, I thought the content of the speech itself was very enlightening. Obviously she had a message to get across and I thought she did that very well. As so many people have said they don't feel as if they know the personal side of Barack very well, her job was to give people a peek into that side of him, which she did in a very warm way. She presented him as a son, husband, and father. Those are important facets of him as a person that needed to be seen in order to know the complete man. Michelle was the best person to give us that insight. I found her to be warm, engaging, and inspiring. Was it all carefully crafted? Of course. She was there to sell a product, her husband, to the American people. We will see the same type of thing at the Republican convention when John McCain is being presented in the best possible light to his followers and the rest of the American people. That's what it's all about. In the meantime, Michelle can't be faulted for praising and standing behind the man she obviously loves and passionately supports. She is, first and foremost, his wife and chief supporter.

I wondered why I didn't see people who looked like me as I turned the pages of the books I was given in grade school. I concluded that something was wrong with people who looked like me. I drew myself as White when I drew self portraits because, again, the message I received as a child was that something was wrong and bad about my Black skin and features. I played with White dolls as they sent me messages that I was not beautiful or worthy. I was forced to speak on behalf of all Black people in elementary school and high school- it became a great burden. My development was a very intense one. I was hungry for answers and affirmations. As a young adult, I went here and there looking for answers. I read this book and that book seeking understanding. I believe many people take this path, especially people of color. If the "far left," religion or a "radical" ideology answered questions and affirmed, then one was at peace. I understand Michelle's college journey; I understand her need to be affirmed because of my plight. If you decontextualize choices and do not acknowledge your own psychological and social limitations to understanding another's plight then we remain static. You may not understand my plight, but please allow me to express it.

One of the reasons that I have become cynical about Obama, is because as a constituent, I was very disappointed in the encounters that I had with numerous members of his Senate staff. If my experience had been positve, and all I expected from them was a reflection of what is being preached by their boss, I would be now doing everything I could to get him elected. He is responsible for managing them.

I found it every bit as rehearsed as her husband's speaches, every time he speaks it sounds so rehearsed. There is nothing real or honest about either one of them. It's like watching an episode of "The Hills", you want to believe it's not scripted but your logical mind takes over and brings you back to reality.
