According to a new report, Palin has supported the Alaska Independence Party AND experts say that might be the most politically detrimental of anything that's been unearthed.
The Alaska Independence Party has called for Alaska's secession from the union!! They no longer want to be part of the United States.
It's been pointed out that it is practically impossible for McCain to make a "country first" argument when his running mate is affiliated with a political party that puts country second.

New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller has opted instead to make up her own version of events. As the AP reports, "Sarah Palin voluntarily told John McCain's campaign about her pregnant teenage daughter and her husband's 2-decade-old DUI arrest during questioning as part of the Republican's vice presidential search, the lawyer who conducted the background review said." Yet according to Bumiller, yesterday's disclosures "called into question" how thoroughly Governor Palin had been vetted. Why the discrepancy? It seems one reporter actually reported the story, while Bumiller made up her own.
The AP quotes Steve Schmidt saying the campaign was prepared to send a "jump team" to the home state of whoever was selected for the second spot. But Bumiller has her own version: "A Republican with ties to the campaign said the team assigned to vet Ms. Palin in Alaska had not arrived there until Thursday, a day before Mr. McCain stunned the political world with his vice-presidential choice." A Republican with ties to the campaign? How about a Republican on the campaign? It's not as though the leadership of this campaign was unwilling or unable to talk to the New York Times, in fact, they were already on the record answering these questions.
And Bumiller writes that Governor Palin "was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party." Not true, and unsourced. Governor Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) — On the eve of the Republican convention, a new national poll suggests the race for the White House remains dead even.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night shows the Obama-Biden ticket leading the McCain-Palin ticket by one point, 49 percent to 48 percent, a statistical dead heat.
The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after both the conclusion of the Democratic convention and McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The key thing to note here is that "she has supported" which refers to the past tense. I'm from AK, and just because there is a party who would like for the state to secede doesn't mean it will ever happen or be given serious consideration. I'm sure the Alaska Independence Party has been wanting this since AK first became a state. It's nothing new. Most of us don't want to secede, and even if we did we have enough common sense to know that our state would become fair game to anyone who wanted our natural resources and it wouldn't be a good idea.
I highly doubt McCain was going for Alaska's vote when he chose Palin, as we only count for 1 to 2% overall (we have a small population, about 1.1 people per sq mile), Alaska consistently votes Republican, and most people in Southeast Alaska don't like Palin.
She is clearly driving the DEMS nuts, because they’re relentlessly attacking her……
