Presidential hopeful John McCain's campaign is strongly calling for an end to all the questions and news surrounding the background of VP nominee Sarah Palin.
Seriously??????
Campaign senior adviser Steve Schmidt wrote in a statement, “This nonsense is over."
The Republicans are crying sexism!
Says the McCain adviser: “This vetting controversy is a faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee for vice president of the United States who has never been a part of the old boys’ network that has come to dominate the news establishment of this country. The McCain campaign will have no further comment about our long and thorough process."
Are McCain's people sure they did adequate research on Palin and her background? And why shouldn't we talk about her, her life, and her career?
Seriously, McCain is OLD. We're not sure he'll last two, full terms. Maybe not even one.
So, if this lady might potentially be the first female President if McCain dies while in term, then we should know all we can about her.
We also have a feeling that if the same thing were occurring on the Democrat's side, they'd be plastering it all over the news.
Unfortunately for Palin, it turns out this little-known, first-term governor had a lot to be made public. And here are some of the juicy items that have been released, aside from the news of her teenaged daughter's pregnancy:
- A private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power.
- Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.
- Her husband once belonged to a fringe political group in Alaska, with some members supporting secession from the United States.
- She has acknowledged smoking marijuana in the past.
A senior McCain adviser, Tucker Eskew, tries to clean up Palin's image by saying that tonight “She will speak as a governor, a former mayor and someone with both hands on the steering wheel of America’s energy economy. She will detail her record of shaking up the status quo in Alaska and standing up to entrenched interests to put the government back on the side of the people.”

Re: Plinkie9 – beg to differ. she has said herself that she fired the public safety chief because he did not do enough to fight alcoholism in the community and he did not fill positions fast enough. the fired chief says the termination came without warning or explaination. the only reason he could think of why he was fired was because palin ordered him to fire her ex brother-in-law because they were in the middle of a nasty divorce. he didn't think that was legal and refused. the next thing he knew, he was fired. she tried to do something similar to her local librarian: she told the library to remove book she believed were offensive to the community. the librarian refused on the grounds that it would be illegal censorship. the next thing she knew, palin was trying to have her fired. fortunately, it didn't work that time. now palin is paying her PERSONAL lawyer up to $95,000 to defend her from these charges (paid with state funds). these are facts and not rumors. these are substantive to making a decision on her ability to lead and unite this country.

The problems with Sarah Palin run far deeper than pot-smoking. She is currently under investigation by Alaska's special prosecutor for firing her public safety commissioner for not firing a state trooper who _just happened_ to be Palin's soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law. She initially supported a porkbarrel project called the "Bridge to Nowhere" _until_ the pork was uncovered and the feds withdrew their funding, And yes, she has publicly supported abstinence-only sex education despite every study proving its utter uselessness in reducing teen pregnancy, and her stance's effectiveness is in full evidence every time the cameras cut to a pregnant Bristol Palin.
That's why Sarah Palin is a problem. She was clearly chosen as some Republican's wet dream - a former model, Catholic mother of five, with the moxie to wield an assault rifle and run the Union's biggest state - how perfectly Annie Oakley. However, she seems at best a puppet for the neo-con anti-sisterhood agenda and, at worst, utterly out of touch with a voter base now struggling harder to make ends meet and seeming incapable of keeping her family in check, never mind the responsibilities of presiding over the Senate and of being a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I honestly haven't made up my mind about how I'm going to vote yet. I think it's safe to say that what I say anywhere, especially on this site, is not going to sway anyone…and I would hope it doesn't. I can't wait until these candidates debate ON THE ISSUES. For the first time since I can remember, we really have an exciting election…one for the history books, and one that brings us that much closer to progress in politics…one with candidates on both sides of the aisle that bring something different and positive to the table. There are things I admire and things I despise ABOUT BOTH PARTIES, and I wish we could progress past that 2 party system in this country. I think that what Palin did when she was mayor and governor are game as they should be for every candidate; but what does it matter if her daughter is pregnant at 17? Perez- For a man who wishes for equality (life and sexuality) you must practice what you preach. You must say the good and bad for both parties. With that said (and numerous terrible things regarding the Republican party I must speak of the Democrats.
1) Every Democrat complains of the terrible economy we currently have. However, one must know that it isn't just the President who brings policy in to force; rather it is a combination of President, House and Senate (checks and balances). Furthermore, our economy has been in a terrible decline since the beginning of 2006. Coincidentally, 2006 was the year the Democrats gained control of the House and Senate.
2) Barack Obama said he would not make this election about race; however, on June 21st, 2008, Obama did just this by stating "They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?”. Very odd comment for a man who claims he is not going to bring race into this election.
