Yes, that is my opinion. Sure, we can all look back and remember the good ol' days. But we can't have it both ways. The old days were filled with extreme sexism, racism, hateful and discriminating attitudes towards gays. People with disabilities were put in nursing homes when all they needed was a little help around the house (home health care). The WASPy days of yesteryear are thankfully gone. We live in a time when all people, regardless of gender or race have more opportunity than ever. I happen to believe we need MORE female leaders. We have yet to get our first at the Executive level. Thus we have a couple of generations of self-centered whiners. So, I disagree - paying even more attention to our children is possibly the LAST thing they need. Hear Hear. I try to tell my friends that have kids they are making a huge mistake by spoiling their kids. Not disciplining and giving them everything they want, including their attention is the worst thing they could do. They just frown and say, "I know", then go on about doing things as usual. I shake my head and have no sympathy. I do feel for the kids, they have such sorry parents. Where did it all go wrong. My mom and dad weren't there for every little scrape and fall and I am so grateful they let me learn the hard way.

Yes, I REALIZE that the risk for Down's Syndrome increases with the age of the mother (though it is NOT the only cause of DS). But the moron who posted earlier inferred that it was Palin's fault for having a child with DS because she waited so long to have a child. I was responding to her ignorance at making such a statement. However, keep this in mind. A black person has a much greater chance of having a child with sickle cell anemia than a white person. Sickle cell is a very painful and terrible disease. So should all black people not have children? Or have the parents be blamed if their child has the disease because they shouldn't have had children? Of course not! That would be idiotic. But that is basically what the moron said. And if she had said something like that YOU and everyone else would have jumped down her ass. We do need to pay more attention to our children. Controls and consequences for inappropriate behavior is necessary and that's where today's parents are sorely lacking, because too many parents (single or married) are too involved in themselves to be parents. They want to be friends with their kids or not involved at all (can you say Palin). We need to get back to the basics that our parents taught us and not be so self-involved….so as you can see, I agree with most of what you said, but believe that its the type of attention we give them will will make a difference.

Parenting is always hard work, but it doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. Besides this, some people have a calling to do something as well as parent - those people are worse parents, I believe, if they stay home and are miserable. We each have to work it out as is best for us and our families.
