Believers for Barack????

Filed under: Barack Obama > John McCain

wenn1995658__opt.jpg

In a bid to appeal to religious voters before McCain snaps them up, the Obama campaign is about to launch a new line of "faith merchandise."

No joke!

The line includes buttons, bumper stickers, and signs with such rallying slogans as "Believers for Barack," "Pro-Family Pro-Obama," and "Catholics for Obama."

The merchandise is intended to be inclusive of all backgrounds of faith, with more specifically-targeted items to be coming soon, such as "Clergy for Change" and "Pro-Israel Pro-Obama."

In the meantime, Obama Deputy Director of Religious Affairs Paul Monteiro said he wanted to get the broader products out "wthout delay." And with good reason too!

The Catholic vote has traditionally selected the winning presidential campaign every race since 1976, with the exception of Al Gore's 2000 White House bid, so both campaigns have been vying aggressively for it.

What do you think of Barack's attempt to lure the faith vote????

  3. 103

Keep grasping for straws Barack. He must be getting high again if he thinks that Catholics are going to support him. Note to those that claim to be Pro-Life Catholics: You may want to check your Catechism (example, 2271: Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law), you are going against the teachings of the Catholic Church if you are supporting abortion, which would mean you would be non-practicing Catholics.

Re: Cat223 – WHAT? That made no sense. None.

  5. 105

Re: YepIsaidit – OMG! Y'all are reading WAY TOO much into this. I just stated that the church WILL NOT back a canidate that is such a firm believer in Pro Choice. Never once did I give my effin opinion. I am a Catholic ok? I would NEVER ABORT A BABY but I feel that IT IS A WOMANS CHOICE. I would NEVER condone a woman who has made that choice. You people kill me. This was about a canidate getting the support of the Church (Roman Catholic). The Church is VERY CLEAR on their stand about abortion. THEY WILL NOT SUPPORT A CANIDATE THAT USES PRO CHOICE ON THEIR PLATFORM. That is all I was saying!

  6. 106

    Re: PinkyTuscadero – Post 45
This is the same argument Nancy Pelosi tried on Meet The Press a few weeks ago and it backfired. The church has never been divided. Maybe the parishioners are divided but the church has always been quite clear. Anyone who say's anything different is wrong.

Re: _Alice_ – I hear you. I am at a loss to explain it. I hope one of the moderators asks this question in one of the debates, because I want an answer. It's shameful!

  8. 108

BARACK OBAMA IS A CHRISTIAN BAPTIST WHO HAS EVERY RIGHT TO REACH OUT TO RELIGOUS VOTERS IF HE WANTS TO SO AGAIN FUCK OFF HATERS AND GO SUCK A DICK!!! JUST CUZ HE'S NOT ONE OF THOSE BIBLE THUMPING, FAINTING FREAK EXTREMISTS (WHO BASICALLY BOMB ABORTION CLINICS AND ARE NO BETTER THAN TERRORISTS THEMSELVES) DOES NOT MEAN HE CAN'T HAVE A RELGOUS VOTER BASE! SO THERE!

  9. 109

Re: MacMomma – I think that there are two different "pro-choice" types. I think some ppl that are pro-choice believe that a woman should have the right to have an abortion, but they would never have one themselves, so they still are within religious boundaries. and there are other pro-choice ppl who would have an abortion themselves, and think other women should have the right as well.

  10. 110

Re: Angieinar – Oh please. Why do you need to get so angry. It's funny. Can't you even laugh about the fact that Obama totes a teleprompter everywhere? Or are you the typical "angry Democrat"?

  13. 113

TO THOSE OF U WHO JUDGE WOMEN THAT HAVE ABORTIONS, KNOW THIS. TAKING AWAY SOMEONE'S "FREE WILL" DOES NOT MAKE THEM SUDDENLY RIGHTEOUS. AND PEOPLE WILL GO TO GREAT LENGTHS TO HAVE ABORTIONS IF NEED BE SO U CAN'T STOP IT AND DON'T TRY. UR WASTING UR TIME AND BREATH. WHENEVER U TRY TO FORCE PEOPLE TO DO THINGS AGAINST THEIR WILL THEY ALWAYS REBEL. IT'S HUMAN NATURE.

  14. 114

This is the one main issue that is keeping me from committing my vote to Obama. But I really don't like McCain or Palin. Maybe I'll just vote for Nader and rid myself of the headache!

  15. 115

During the Kennedy's presidential campaign Republicans' heavily used fear tactics regarding Kennedy being a Catholic and they claimed that Kennedy would actively work to convert the US to a become a Catholic Nation. They also claimed that he would name the Pope as an official advisor in national affairs.

Sounds familiar?! Republican's used these fear tactics against Kennedy nearly 50 years ago and now they are trying to do the same regarding Obama and stating that he is a Muslim. The Republican party is full of Evangelicals that don't even include Catholics as Christians

And no you have a lot of Evangelicals and Christian conservatives on here claiming to be Catholics just to state that they would never support Obama. Well good. Intolerance, hate and ignorance are small town Conservative Christian values and you can continue that way. But people who truly follow Christ and don't act as if they talk for Christ won't be blinded. .

Re: LS – I love your comment!
A month or so ago, I made the comment that I had a FORCED abortion, since I was raped by my 'father' (it wasn't until about 15 years later did I learn that he was NOT my natural father…but, rather my STEPfather). I just couldn't believe a few of the responses to me. How I 'should have had the baby, and lived with it' or 'gone through the entire 9 months, gone through childbirth and given the baby up for adoption'…never mind that I had just started my teen-aged years, when it happened.
Makes me wonder how some peoples' minds work.

Re: Smirks – post 108- Yeah, it bugs me. My hubby too. He's a vet who is injured and has had a hell of time getting anything from the VA. Disgusting. They are so backlogged and so short on money, that I can't understand why any politician would deny money to them. Send them to do our bidding yet we don't care when they come home with effed up bodies and brains! It's a damn shame.
And I agree, I hope someone grills him about that. Oh man, these debates are going to be so good. And you know, I'll be thinking of you when they happen! ;)

John McCain opposed the GI Bill legislation that passed 75-22 in the Senate because he said it would hurt retention and reduce re-enlistment by 16%. He also said it would reduce the number of the enlisted ranks. On the importance of NCOs McCain said " "In my life, I have learned more from non-commissioned officers I have known and served with than anyone else outside my family, they are very hard to replace. Encouraging people to choose to not become non-commissioned officers would hurt the military and our country very badly." This legislation was not supported by the Army nor the Pentagon. At a time when the military is struggling to meet recruitment quotes during wartime, McCain must have felt that the shrinkage caused by the new GI Bill would have a negative impact on our readiness. This would be the only logical explanation for his opposition. This is tactical, not a diss to the veterans.

  26. 126

THANKS LETTYB! I NEVER UNDERSTOOD POLITICIANS NEED TO APPEAL TO CHURCHES AND RELIGION PERIOD. THIS IS GOVERNMENT. THE ONLY ISSUES IN A CAMPAIGN SHOULD BE GOVERNMENT RELATED SHIT! HEALTHCARE, TAXES, SECURITY, EDUCATION, YOU KNOW STUFF THAT AFFECTS EVERYONE. AS A MATTER OF FACT IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL AS A POLITICIAN TO DISCUSS OR INVOLVE URSELF IN SOCIAL CRAP LIKE ABORTION AND GAY MARRIAGE. CIVIL RIGHTS SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED. LET PEOPLE MARRY WHO THEY LOVE AND HAVE BABIES WHEN THEY WANT. PRY THE CHURCH AWAY FROM THE WHITEHOUSE AND MAKE THIS COUNTRY FREE ONCE AND FOR ALLL!!!!!!WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  27. 127

Sorry to hear about your hubby :( Ya… the VA sucks ass. My husband's a vet, both our fathers are vietnam vets. Grandfathers are WWII/Korea vets, etc.
    -
I'll be thinking of you, too. You are one of the people I most respect on here. Even though we seldom agree. :)

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my services to the Obamama campaign of 2008. At great expense, I have begun printing up a new line of Obamama tshirts in heavenly colors and with tasteful glitter lettering:

"Obama…his god is kinda like your God! So vote!"

"Obama… You kneel in a pew, I kneel on a rug…what's the diff?"

"Obama… my wife may not be much to look at, and mean as a snake, but she loves church bake sales!"

"Obama…Hey! They talked me out of a cross for my acceptance speech, so I did that whole Greek temple thing. But we're still cool, right?"

"Obama…Rome is where? Uh-huh…Hey! That's not too far from Mecca!"

  29. 129

    He's desperate.

  30. 130

Considering the fact that he was the SOLE state senator to vote against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, I think it's safe to say the religious vote won't be switching parties any time soon.

And this is a fact—people think twice before you vote someone in office who opposed providing medical care to babies born from botched abortions!!!

  31. 131

Sweetpiece, hate to burst your bubble, but Obama got the more money from Merrill Lynch. Here's a bit of news for you from last year:
"Obama's take remained the steadiest among the top-tier candidates. He received 27 percent of his Merrill money in the third quarter."

  43. 143

Re: SquirrelLives – He has repeatedly denied money MONEY to vets and to the VA. He has repeatedly denied BENEFITS to vets and their families. His record doesn't lie. I have it in front of me. I'm talking about MONEY for health care, medical facilities, and rehab for vets. He has voted against measures that would give these facilities money. I just wan to know why? He supports the war but doesn't support the men and women who are actually in it. They are coming back, if they come back, to piss poor health care. I've seen it with my own eyes. So, why would McCain deny measures to IMPROVE the lives of vets? They are, after all, fighting for a cause he deeply cares about. The VA needs more money, more people, and an absolute overhaul of their bureaucracy. These people deserve it!

Re: Renee26 – Uh….abortions weren't even thought of during the time of the Constitution being written. It's a different world today….that's why various forms of birth control have been created; women have many choices available from subjecting themselves from creating an unwanted life. Use them and quit bitching. Rape is another story…..

  48. 148

FOR ANYONE WHO SAYS THEY ARE CATHOLIC AND PRO-CHOICE: YOU ARE KIDDING YOURSELVES!! GO TELL YOU PASTOR HOW YOU FEEL, AND SEE IF YOU ARE INVITED BACK TO COMMUNION. My post was specifically about the GI Bill that passed this past may. If you would like me to research other measures, please provide the details and I will try to answer your questions.
    -
Regarding the GI Bill opposition, McCain had his own bill that got tabled in favor of the bill that passed. He had compromise legislation, but the Jim Webb bill is what went forward. In this instance, McCain placed readiness before veteran's benefits (as he should). Readiness trumps everything.

When did Thomas Jefferson's dream of separation of Church and State go up in flames? No sane person wants to live under a Christian Theocracy any more than he want to live under the Taliban, or the Wahabbists in Saudi Arabia. It's disgusting that presidential candidates have to pander to this tiny segment of society with its superstitious occult form of mental illness. We should be getting them into treatment, not begging for their votes.

I'm typing slow so maybe you can get it. The first recorded EVIDENCE of abortion was in Egypt in 1550 BC. Chinese concubines had them in 500 BC…Women used to do all sorts of terrible things to themselves to abort their fetuses…poisons, herbs, sharp instruments, fasting, bloddletting, having somebody punch them in the abdomen…

  56. 156

catholics for obama? thats a joke right…

how can someone claim to be catholic and be pro-choice and pro-homosexual marriage? among other things… the catholic faith isn't a buffet line you can't pick and choose which doctrines you want to follow!

and for all those "what if your raped" umm it's not the babies fault you were raped! pretty much murdering your child is worse than being raped

    RIDICULOUS!!

  57. 157

    Re: kristeno7
"pretty much murdering your child is worse than being raped"

    It's not a child, it's a zygote.

…and let's ask someone who's been raped how bad it would be to carry the baby for 9 months, go through labor and child birth, and then have to tell her lovely child that his/her daddy is a rapist. Sounds like a picnic.

  63. 163

Re: SquirrelLives – I always like your posts but…tell that to our injured troops. Tell that to the families dealing with all the BS that comes their way. There is a reason vets are so pissed off at him. It's because he doesn't care. And has shown repeatedly that he doesn't. And the Webb amendment was for adequate rest between deployments. I can tell you first hand that the troops aren't "ready" after only six months of being home. Are you kidding? I've had friends go downrange multiple times and they are not "ready". They are constantly rotating in and out. Again and again. They need to rest and receive help for all the things they are going through. PTSD is a HUGE problem right now. we are sending men and women down there who can barely take care of themselves let alone take care of their duties downrange.
    One example of his "help":
May 2006- McCain voted AGAINST an amendment that would provide 20 million to the Dept. of VA for health care facilities.
    Why would he do that????

  80. 180

    Re: _Alice_ – Post 164
My use of the word "readiness" refers to the overall preparedness of the military as a whole, not the individual soldier. If a measure put forth caused our overall readiness to suffer, as a candidate for president he would have to consider the effects going forward. I cannot explain his reason for opposing the specific legislation you are referring to.
    -
Try this. Search on google "mccain veterans benefits" click on the #2 result, an article from a blog called Obsidian Wings. This is an overview of most if not all Veteran's legislation going back to 2005 giving McCain's actions on all. He voted for some of the legislation, against others and failed to vote on a few. Draw your own conclusions. I'm with you and Smirks, I would like to hear his answers on this topic.

We have the naive if idealistic caucus (peer pressure) voters of Iowa (and others) to thank for this pre-destined failure and four more years of McCain (senility) becoming Palin (the trains will run on time), just like Hillary R Clinton told us it would be. (He can't win.) Remember? This is America. Remember? Black men need not apply to be President. Just the way it is. Hillary would have been the greatest president ever and the one who would have led this confused country out of the wilderness. But no.

All I know is what I see, which is 2 wars, an economy in the shitter, and hatred around the globe for us. So, no I can't answer your question but I wish I could.

hahaha… no, I haven't. I'll have to go look at it. What on EARTH is he going to do in the debates?!?

I'm CATHOLIC, I'm PROCHOICE, and I'm FOR OBAMA/BIDEN!!!! Times have changed people. My 80 year old Catholic grandparent, my 55 yr old parents and all my siblings are for OBAMA/BIDEN, too. I'm sure there are still some who are stuck in the past, but most Catholics I know are for OBAMA.

You dolt. I didn't list the website to support my view. I listed it because it tells the scandalous truth about ALL politicians. I don't claim McCain is virtuously above it all. I acknowledge he has taken money. The fact remains that Obama has also taken money. And don't just parse it out in PACs… when you factor individual contributions in Obama is at the top of many lists. Admit it and you might feel better. Of course you can just go on defending the indefensible and look silly. ALL politicians are shady.

    Re: offtheproperty – Post 183
I never really considered the peer pressure factor inherent in caucus votes. I never liked the caucus vote but this adds an element that distorts the outcome. I would like to see the caucus states converted to a traditional primary contest. Caucuses are flawed. Consider the outcome of the Texas Primary/Causus. Hillary wins the primary by 100,000 votes but Obama wins the caucus and gets more delegates. What's up with that?????

Re: scallywag – Per your #149 comment, you 'appear' to be Catholic (born and raised), so, I will ask you….
If Catholicism was/is set in stone…
Why was cremation given an 'okey dokey' by the Vatican? (I know this, for a fact, because my grandmother would NEVER have gone for it, if not for the Vatican).
Why would meat on Friday be 'ok' for SOME people…but, not for others?
Last, but not least,…..if 'pro-choice' is ingrained into the thoughts of Catholics….is that why SO MANY Catholic priests only molest/rape BOYS, because the boys/young men could/would NOT get pregnant? Hmmm….makes one wonder.
