A new video featuring basketball star Josh Howard is burning up the internet.
A video of him dissing the Star Spangled Banner is getting many hot under the collar.
In the video he says, "'The Star-Spangled Banner' is going on. I don't celebrate this [expletive]. I'm black."
What the fuckity fuck does he mean by that?!
He's entitled to his opinion, but we think it's a wack thing to say.
The national anthem is not a black, brown, yellow, red or white thing.
It's an American thing.
He is American, right?

You know what's sad, Harriette Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's cabin and pushed for Blacks to be returned to their own country. What's also sad is that Lincoln, who did not free the slaves, wrote the emancipacion proclamation as a strategic move to break the Confederacy. He DID NOT FREE THE SLAVES in the border states ( nor within the union) either. The proclamation unintentionally made freeing the slaves another war goal designed to cripple the southern way of life. As Northern soldiers entered the south the slaves ran to them, served in the army and served as guides helping the north navigate through the south. America is the only country that systematically excluded blacks from any economic growth starting w/ the KKK and extending into systematic descrimination which b/came challenged via affirmative action which benefitted more WOMEN than anyone else! America is the only imperialist country where being black is a negative burden… hell foreign blacks do not like to be confused w/ black Americans!

Very good post. I literally think racism will "die out" in this country for the most part. Most people born after about 1970 or so, in my experience, aren't very racist. It is the older generations that perpetuate the problem, imo. Yes, you will always have little pocket of it here or there, but I think for the most part it will die when they die.

The star-spangled banner stands for a lot of the same old shit that's been going on for a while in the nation, and while I wish brother Howard would be a little more articulate, his point is not lost on a lot of people. Not to flamebait, but it's a lot like the uproar about the "proud of my country remark," that Michelle Obama made, it didn't shock the black community.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you but even in a city like Chicago, I see racism every day and here it amongst my collegues as well. It doesn't help that the most negative aspects of black culture is constantly exploited in main stream America and NO I do not blame white America for it. What is ignored however; are the positives of black culture that blacks try to also put out there that often go un noticed, making it difficult for blacks to overcome stereotypes put out there. I thank God my parents made it their mission for me to experience diversity at every turn in life. I was born during a time of change and upheaval and I think the country had come a long way up to that time and has gone even further since. Do we have a way to go? Sure. Does that mean that the people who are stuck in poverty have themselves to blame? And how many opportunities do the black people had in America have? And what about the women? And Hispanics? Sure there are successful minorities, but how do they do as communities? And what about Guantanamo? What about your health care system? What about having no vacation?
In my country nobody pays more than 400 dollars a year for health care, including medication, no matter how expensive it is to treat the disease. And we get at least five weeks of paid vacation a year. And a year paid maternal leave - with no risk of losing our jobs. It's actually illegal to discriminate women in any sense.
So, yes, sure I'm proud of my country, but it does not go to that crazy extent that I can't see the problems in the system. I don't have to put my hand on my chest and sing the anthem every time I talk about the problems in our society.
It really puzzles me that it seems impossible for any American to criticize the American system without emphasizing that USA is the greatest country in the world. Which it obviously is not.
Him not liking the national anthem is his personal opinion. Now should he have said that on camera, maybe not. Some people need to realize that being a public figure you can not say anything and everything you want. You must think about what you are saying and the consequences. Do i sing the national anthem? NO, but that is my right,Am I going to make a big deal out of it? no. Sometimes those stuck in poverty do have themselves to blame, sometimes not. There are more and more opportunities for Blacks, Latinos, and women every day. My industry is almost exclusively run by females. My boss is a woman and her boss is a black woman. How do minorities do as communities? It depends… if they cling to their culture and language instead of embracing their new identity, they do quite poorly. It is only when they move out of the China Towns, the Little Italys, the Russian enclaves, and the Black neighborhoods and embrace the multi-culturalism that is America that they tend to do better. America gets knocked for not wanting to be part of the "global community" but all these sub-groups in America don't want to be part of the "American community".

Healthcare. Hmmm… my Canadian friends and a few people I know in England aren't too happy with their nationalized healthcare. I had cancer in my late 20's and if I hadn't had private insurance I would have died waiting for the diagnosis I needed to get well. I paid through the ass for the chemo and other drugs but I am alive, grateful, and I don't expect taxpayers to foot my medical bills.

I get three weeks paid vacation, and I find that sufficient. Would I like to have more? Hell yes! But… why should I be paid to be on vacation? Why should I be paid to be on maternity leave? A lot of black people don't stand for the national anthem due to one thing… THERE'S A BLACK NATIONAL ANTHEM! I was a junior in high school and for black history month.. they played the black national anthem for an assembly…. Well being that they wouldn't stand up for the actual anthem.. I decided I wasn't going to respect them by getting off my fat ass for theirs. So I sat there, and I got boo'd yeah so what I didn't care.. but I actually got suspended for not standing for some bullshit anthem. We are all fucking Americans.. I mean we don't have a Romanian national anthem… or a Spanish one.. so why are black people so god damn important to have their own….
