A-List Celebs Missing from Fight to Protect Gay Marriage in California

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Brad Pitt > Rosie O'Donnell > Politik > Elton John > Ellen DeGeneres

ellenportia__opt.jpg

We mentioned on Wednesday that Brad Pitt gave $100,000 to fight the passage of Proposition 8, an amendment that would outlaw gay marriage in California.

Pitt's donation was the biggest A-list donation the campaign has seen to date.

It's hard to believe that newlyweds Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have not given a penny to the cause, as claimed by a new report. Rosie O'Donnell and Elton John have failed to donate too.

Geoff Kors, the executive director spearheading the effort to fight Prop 8 said, “We have raised a record $11 million to fight Prop 8. Unfortunately, the other side has raised $16 million and is raising money at a feverish pace. We need to catch up and match them dollar for dollar. With an expected 13 million voters and the most expensive media markets in the nation, it takes tens of millions of dollars to get your message out. If we can get our message out at the same rate as they can, I believe we will win. But if they continue to have more resources, it will be very difficult for us to prevail.”

In addition to celebs, LGBT entertainment power players like Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry are 'missing' from the donor rolls.

Let's all step up to the bat to fight for equality and donate!

Gay marriages (civil ceremonies) are totally legal here in the UK. I have a friend who is paying for his gay wedding himself soon, because his parents definitely don't approve of "that sort of thing". His "husband-to-be" is actually from California and was saying that although it may be currently legalised, it is still strongly disapproved by many and will never really be something that will be a normal part of life. Okay, I have to admit that I still think it's weird, but I am not against it, as I have gay friends and want the best for them all.

AMERICA - GUESS WHAT? If you really want to bytch and moan about equality for everyone, then instead of fighting for the rights of gay marriage; you should be fighting for your government to withdraw spousal benefits for everybody, because the unfairness exists where homosexuals are required to pay the same taxes as heterosexual people, but if they marry, they cannot draw on the same financial benefits as married heterosexuals.
    :l
Instead of fighting for gay marriage rights in individual States, you would need to attack the problem at the core, which is the Federal "Defense of Marriage Act", because that is where marriage is defined as between a woman and a man.
    :l
Federal Law overrides State Law, so every State that passes gay marriage is doing so illegally, because States cannot alter definitions that already exist in Federal Law.
    :l

    Re: KOOL KID
awww, And I hope both of your dads know they should be damn proud for raising such a great kid! most 14 year olds wouldn't ever talk that mature, so tell your dads thank you for proving what I have always said, Gay couples can be great parents

  5. 105

Re: Mama to all – because hes donated before to other ones like this in the states

  6. 106

Re: State ziti – idiot said " Cute dog, id cum in its hair!! Maybe I should be aloud to marry it. Seems thats what this slippery slope of gay marriage is leading too. Yep Puppy, Racist Pig love. "

why do all you religious freaks resort to comparing being gay and having sex with animals? I'm proud and happy I never had religion in my life, ours was just called common sense and karma, and a lot of you sick religous fucks aren't going to like the nasty taste of karma coming back on you
    assholes

  7. 107

Re: perezdiva – um, it isnt just gay people who are donating, I'm not gay but for my birthday I have asked everyone instead of gifts to just please donate to this cause, and I live in Seattle,WA!!

  8. 108

Re: uraPIGperez – but, if you think about it this way, the more states that make it legal, on the fedral level they'll have to do something, either like you said do away with all rights for marriage couples or give them to everyone.
The one thing I don't understand, is they're doing away with common law marriage, in the state of WA we've never had it, BUT when my other half (we've been together for 14 years) was sued for a bill that had went into collection, MY NAME WAS ON THE DAMN PAPERS, AND THEY TOOK MONEY OUT OF MY PAYCHECK TOO. So to me they will only let the common law marriage exist if and when it suits them

Perez, Will you stop pushing your beliefs on your website.. I love you and all but leave Ellen alone. From what I hear you does give to others..

    I'm john mccain

  11. 111

Hey Perez, You being a BIG supporter of the Gay & Lesbian community, HOW MUCH DID YOU DONATE, if at all? Yeah, I didn't think so

  12. 112

Below are a few lines from Obama's books, IN HIS WORDS!
From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.' / 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.' / 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.' / 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.' / 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'
************'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'**************
    Hmmmm….NO THANKS! McCain / Palin 2008! :-)

  13. 113

Go Straight People Go. Non-Normal people are not Normal. If everyone was gay or lesbo, we would not have a human race. Non-Normal people think about that. If momma and daddy did not do the act, you would not be here.

  14. 114

What a bunch of baloney. Who doesn't already know about this, and know how they are going to vote?

It doesn't take millions of dollars by either side, to get any message out. The message is alredy OUT–and that's the problem.

  15. 115

It *IS nice to think that the loony leftie hollyweerd crowd will be throwing good money after bad, once again proving how self-absorbed they are. Donate millions, A-listers! PISS IT AWAY on yourselves! Screw the needy! Screw the hungry! Spend spend spend!

    Re: KOOL KID
It must be fun having two gay dads. You are a lucky bitch. Gay people are so much fun.

  19. 119

why should elton donate money he dont live in california and is already married

your a bitch you trying to put down people

  20. 120

you failed to mention how much you donated…

  21. 121

Well, I guess Ellen is happy to put her tuna where her mouth is, but not her money. It's part of the entitlement mindset that Hollyweird lives with. Someone else will do all the work so they can enjoy the benefits, and when it's time to show their support, they'll only do it if there are a thousand cameras around. Oh oh oh…it might hurt Ellen's career if everyone finds out she's a dyke…wait…no…everyone already knows. I guess what's good for her isn't good for all the other tuna lovers out there.

  22. 122

The voters of Cali already voted against this 6 to 8 years ago, it lost by a huge margin, I don't think public opinion has changed enough for it not to lose. The judges just need to respect the laws on the books,so a already money strapped state stops wasting money voting on the same shit over and over.

  23. 123

well anyone who fears god will vote against it. no offence

  24. 124

Gay marriage is just wrong! 4 liberal judges are breaking the law. The people have spoken and voted AGAINST gay marriage. Proposition 8 is not just about gay marriage. It's about teaching kids in public school that being married to the same sex is OK. This is wrong. Christians are constantly being blamed for pushing their "beliefs" on people but gays are constantly trying to convince people that it's OK to be gay. God said this is an ABOMINATION! VOTE YES ON prop 8 is you do not agree with Gay marriage. Alot of people need to read the small print on this proposition before they vote NO.

  25. 125

Geoff Kors is an amazing person and hard working activist for gay rights. Those bigots who wish to overturn gay marriages already in effect are benneath contempt. God damn I am lucky to live in a country where equal marriage is not an issue. Oh and screw all the neo-con dips**ts that support McLame and that gun toting Xian freak Palin.

  26. 126

Re: JustSayin08 – Sorry that your country is so full of racists and bigots. This is why we need the US government to fail. Then perhaps the rest of the world can go along our own tracks. Stupid, stupid Americans (except the progressives). McCain supporters - you will get what you deserve white trash fools.

  27. 127

    Re: KOOL KID
Hate Groups! Bigots! Yeah - I love the radical homosexuals who call people haters because they don't believe what they do - sorry - two sodomites does not a marriage make. There is NOTHING stopping homosexuals from living in such relationships today. Advocates of gay marriage claim gay couples need marriage in order to have hospital visitation and inheritance rights, but they can easily obtain these rights by writing a living will and having each partner designate the other as trustee and heir. I find RADICAL HOMOSEXUALS who sue, and complain, and sue, and sue and use OUR COURTS to serve their own needs - BOTTOMLINE - LET THE PEOPLE VOTE - don't try and steal it - which is EXACTLY what the homo's did - they stole it - and we are gonna take it back on the 8th.

  28. Ammie says – reply to this

    128

I guess this is not their priority. And, ditto vamkat, "hope you are donating too, perez."

  29. 129

Why Prop 8 WILL pass: a) this is about money, homosexuals want marriage so the can claim social security benefits - (the feds aren't ever gonna let that happpen, the system is already broke) b) HOW UNAMERICAN that a group of judges OVERULED THE PEOPLE in favor of a radical group - we are seriously pissed off. Had homosexuals NOT SHOVED it down our throats, maybe we'd be more open to it. But alas, that didn't happen, they did what they always do… sue and complain. The biggest danger homosexual marriage presents is the enshrining into law the notion that sexual love,is the sole criterion for marriage. If the state must recognize a marriage of two men simply because they love one another, upon what basis can it deny marital recognition to a group of two men and three women, for example, or a sterile brother and sister who claim to love each other?

  30. 130

Re: KOOL KID – Bless ya, sweetie :)

What I find most baffling about this is, right now the US has the aftermath of hurricanes, a ridiculous war, they're sitting on the edge of economic collapse and what are they raising money for? Banning gay marriage.

If someone could show me how this is more important than the various disasters that the US is facing, I'd sure like to know.

  31. 131

    Re: SophieJane
And that is a BIG reason your country is morally bankrupt - the UK is a scary place - you should work on that pesky radical muslim problem - or the fact aborted babies end up in UK hospital dumpsters - before commenting on our issues - what a nice society you have there - no religion, no unwanted babies, and outrageous cost of living and a crappy quality life if you are not rich - what a great place.

  32. 132

Re: JustSayin08 – Just shut up!! If you don't like what they're gonna teach the kids then open your own damn christian schools!! Or home-school your kids!! We are not forcing our beliefs, we just want to have the same rights that straight people have, like the right to marry the person we love! If gays marry isn't gonna effect your life! Your pay won't get lower or your house won't colapse! Just shut up and deal with it!!

  33. 133

    Re: xXTOMXx

You already DO have the same rights! Just designate them as you heir. States regulate marriage in many ways besides denying men the right to marry men, and women the right to marry women. Roughly half of all states prohibit first cousins from marrying, and all prohibit marriage of closer blood relatives, even if the individuals being married are sterile. In all states, it is illegal to attempt to marry more than one person, or even to pass off more than one person as one’s spouse. Some states restrict the marriage of people suffering from syphilis or other venereal diseases. Homosexuals, therefore, are not the only people to be denied the right to marry the person of their choosing.

  34. 134

I'm sure all those gay celebs give lots of money to worthy causes. Besides, someone like ELLEN talks about gay marriage on her show that reaches millions of people. That's a huge contribution and a lot better than a TV commercial for the proposition.

  35. 135

I'vee never been a part of any campaign or political movement in my life. Even though I signed my life away at 18 to honorably serve my country for seven years, I have never voiced my opinion on anything. I feel that I have sacrificed so much in order to give my fellow Americans all the freedoms that I, myself had to set aside. I believe it's a disgrace on our founding fathers to have legislation like Prop 8 drafted in our country. There should always be a separation of Church and State! Our fellow LGBT Americans respect, love, and honor this country as much as heterosexual Americans. They all pay taxes, follow laws, and most importantly some sign their life away to serve our country! This is unfair and I am very interested in helping this cause in anyway possible. As a sister of a lesbian citizen, there should be no inequality amongst us.

  36. 136

Yet another reason to masturbate feverishly at the mention of his name.

  37. 137

Re: uraPIGperez – It is not just a money game. It's important because the CA supreme court determined that denying a group legal standing based on ANY inherent difference is discriminatory and thereby unconstitutional. If prop 8 fails, it would re-open the discussion on a federal level and could strike DOMA down as unconstitutional (because it IS). It would also spur legal challenges to hateful laws/statutes/constitutional amendments all across these bigoted lands! In NO situation should the people of a populace be allowed to vote on eliminating the rights of any other group. It's senseless and reminds me of when I studied the civil rights battles and the fight to marry inter-racially.
