Recap: Travis Barker AND DJ AM Critically Injured in South Carolina Plane Crash, 4 Dead

As we reported earlier, Travis Barker and celebrity music spinner, DJ AM were critically injured after their Learjet 60 crashed during takeoff from South Carolina's Columbia Metropolitan Airport, just before midnight on Friday. The plane was headed for Van Nuys, CA.
The former Blink 182 drummer, Baker, and DJ AM are in critical condition and being treated for severe burns at an Augusta, Georgia burn center.
Barker was transported by ground to the burn facility from the site of the crash.
DJ AM was airlifted.
Four people died in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, CA.
Chris was Travis's assistant.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
The plane crash is still under investigation, however, during a press conference late Saturday morning a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the plane overran the airstrip and proceeded to run into a number of the airport's lights and antenna.
Air traffic controllers reportedly "saw sparks coming from the runway" before the crash. Investigators don't know if that was from the aircraft or its engines.
A South Carolina resident named William Owens was driving down a highway next to the airport when he said he saw a fireball go across the road. He told local TV station WIS News 10:
"I didn't know what I had seen — it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer though I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet and I recognized it as a jet," Owens said.
Owens then described what he saw as he tried to make it to the wreckage.
"It's in flames and the fuel is running across the road and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway," Owens said.
Owens said the two men (Travis and DJ AM!) were running around and stripping down to extinguish themselves. He then asked the men if there was anyone else on board the plane and they said four more were with them.
"We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," Owens said.
Travis and AM were in Columbia, South Carolina Friday night for a T-Mobile sponsored concert at Five Points, a popular shopping district.
Musicians Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were also part of the festivities. Their reps confirmed to us that they WERE NOT on the plane that crashed.
So sad, sad, sad.

Folks, Travis and DJ AM are facing a long road to recovery…and for the most part, I think we can all say that we truly wish them the best against the odds…
The people here (and elsewhere) who are making horrible and stupid comments, just ignore them. There's no need for negativity at this time…Don't respond to them and don't feed the hatred. Situations like this bring out the best and the worst in people.

I've read where the treatment for burns is almost unbearable (don't write about it - it's unimaginable).

also, i think this is a good time to encourage organ and tissue donation. you can donate skin, and enough will be left where you can still have an open casket if you or your family has that planned. the skin can be used in place of bandages on burn victims. bandages must be changed, which take tissue with them when removed. it slows down healing time and causes more pain. donor skin doesn't have to be taken off the burn victims, letting the victim heal faster and with less pain.

if anyone wants to correct or add to what i just said, please do. i learned this in 9th grade health class (10 years ago!), and forgot about it ’til now, so all the info might not be there, or i may be wrong about something. i think i pretty much got the idea out there though. people, sign your driver's license! donate your organs and tissues, you're not gonna need that stuff when you're gone! PLEASE give it to someone who can use it!

This is so sad…. I'm glad they survived, but I really do feel for the other 4 people and their families. One had been recently married with a new baby…it just doesn't seem fair. I hope these two will be ok, I'm sure they'll be badly scarred, but hopefully they will survive. My prayers go out!!!

Both guys were incredible at the VMA's. They were my favorite part of the show. If they can recover, I'm sure they'll be affected for the rest of their lives.

TMZ has learned Travis Barker has been burned from the waist down, but he is expected to survive the plane crash. DJ AM's face was severely burned and is being tended to right now.
We're also told the tragedy is all the worse because one of the passengers who died, Chris Baker, Travis' assistant on "Meet the Barkers," was married recently and has a new baby.
So sad….

I feel so terrible about this, that's an awful way to go if they don't make it out alive. I really liked Travis Barker, he's an incredible drummer. I'm afraid of what he'll look like after all this, that is if…
I keep reading that due to them being in critical condition as well as burn unit, chances are they'll become septic and not make it… But I'm going to hope otherwise and not think about the other possibilities.

After seeing the photos on the web from the South Carolina paper it is a WONDER AND MIRACLE that ANYONE walked away from that plane crash alive.

Re: SimplyPut – i'm not bashing. i agree with you completely. it chaps my ass when people say the survivors of any accident had angels/god/whatever on their side, as if the others had little demons clinging to them. to me it's disrespectful and almost makes it seem like they feel the people somehow deserved it, they did something wrong and death was their punishment. same goes for when there is an accident and no deaths, but some are injured and some are not. of course they say the uninjured had some holy being on their side, and apparently the injured were deserving of the misfortune for whatever reason.

Holy shit. My friend's mom is a nurse there and when she told me, I didn't believe her! I jumped straight on here and voila! This is why I refuse to freakin' fly. After a very close call a couple of years ago, I promised God that if that landing gear came down and I survived, I'd never fly again! Every time I think I'm being silly and consider flying again, something like this happens to remind me that I have no desire whatsoever to do so!

i've loved travis since i was 6 years old, he was the guy who made me want to take up drumming. he's so talented, and with 2 young children-i hope he recovers quickly and is able to drum again. i don't know much about dj am, but burns to the face sounds awful and so painful, i hope he recovers soon as well. and of course, the four deceased..how awful. rip. such a scary situation..and their poor families. thoughts and prayers go out to them.
it's ironic..i remember in an interview travis saying that he really disliked flying and preferred to drive to shows, even if it would take days. i bet that's all he does from now on. this whole situation is heartbreaking..
