Recap: Travis Barker AND DJ AM Critically Injured in South Carolina Plane Crash, 4 Dead

As we reported earlier, Travis Barker and celebrity music spinner, DJ AM were critically injured after their Learjet 60 crashed during takeoff from South Carolina's Columbia Metropolitan Airport, just before midnight on Friday. The plane was headed for Van Nuys, CA.
The former Blink 182 drummer, Baker, and DJ AM are in critical condition and being treated for severe burns at an Augusta, Georgia burn center.
Barker was transported by ground to the burn facility from the site of the crash.
DJ AM was airlifted.
Four people died in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, CA.
Chris was Travis's assistant.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
The plane crash is still under investigation, however, during a press conference late Saturday morning a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the plane overran the airstrip and proceeded to run into a number of the airport's lights and antenna.
Air traffic controllers reportedly "saw sparks coming from the runway" before the crash. Investigators don't know if that was from the aircraft or its engines.
A South Carolina resident named William Owens was driving down a highway next to the airport when he said he saw a fireball go across the road. He told local TV station WIS News 10:
"I didn't know what I had seen — it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer though I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet and I recognized it as a jet," Owens said.
Owens then described what he saw as he tried to make it to the wreckage.
"It's in flames and the fuel is running across the road and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway," Owens said.
Owens said the two men (Travis and DJ AM!) were running around and stripping down to extinguish themselves. He then asked the men if there was anyone else on board the plane and they said four more were with them.
"We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," Owens said.
Travis and AM were in Columbia, South Carolina Friday night for a T-Mobile sponsored concert at Five Points, a popular shopping district.
Musicians Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were also part of the festivities. Their reps confirmed to us that they WERE NOT on the plane that crashed.
So sad, sad, sad.

Wow, I heard about this earlier and was so hoping it wasn't true. I've always been a big fan of Travis. He seems like he's an amazing father, and a really great person. He's, in my opinion, the best drummer out there. DJ AM also is really good at what he does. My heart goes out to their families, as well as to the loved ones of the deceased. May god grant them a speedy recovery, and Rest In Peace to Sarah, James, Chris, and Charles.

What an awful title to an article referring to the plane crash. There was a man complaining that he was going to miss a baseball game in DC and a Redskins game due to the plane crash.
While I hope they will make as full a recovery as possible, it's a miracle they're alive!
How devastating that Chris's wife went into labour only hours after he passed away. I can't imagine how she would feel, having a child is so emotional on it's own. To have something like that happen…wow. My thoughts are with their families. I hope DJ A.M and Travis pull through, I'm sure they will by the sound of it.
Terrible news…and I'm only familiar with these guys via online tabloids. Praying for the recovery of Barker and DJ AM. They will need courage and stamina to survive the ordeal of being burned and I fervently hope they will get through this. RIP those who did not survive. Just awful:((

Terrible. RIP to the 4 deceased. I hope Travis and Adam will be ok. I always had the utmost respect for Travis because he's such a good father and treats Shanna's older daughter like his own. It says a lot about him as a person. It sounds like DJ AM got the brunt of the injuries, I hope he makes it. He's been through a lot of shit in his life.

Small planes are really scary. Very sad, tho I'm surprised people are getting so worked up over these E list celebs. Not impressed with these guys or their women - Paris, Nicole, Shanna, Kristen Cavallari - hope this shakes some sense into them.

Not sure if we are more up to date here in Aus cause it's morning here, but turns out that the whole reason they were on the flight in the first place was that Travis Barker was doing everything in his power to get Chris Barker to the hospital to see that "new baby" born. His wife went into labour during Saturday and they were hurrying home for that. Tragic. Not bad luck, not a miracle, just a tragedy, for everyone involved.

I heard that Travis doesn't like to fly on these small planes and the only reason he got the plane was because his assistent Chris Baker's wife went into labor and Travis told Chris he would do whatever he could to get Chris back to his wife to be there when his child was born. This is just too sad.
My heart is breaking for everyone involved. I don't know how you bounce back from something so horrific. What a tragedy. Peace be with them, somehow.

I read somewhere that the only reason they were on the private jet was to get chris (barkers assistant) back home as his wife was in labour, how sad is that….. God Bless everyone involved and my heart goes out to his wife and now 2 children without a daddy :'(
why have you not been updating us! i love u perez but there seems to be a lot more information out there by now… the fact that Chris Baker's (Travis's assistant) newlywed wife went into labor with their first child this morning is one of the most horrible stories I have ever heard in my life! These 2 men without a doubt had their guardian angels with them last night and I pray for their recovery. My prayers go out to the familys of the 4 victims (especially Bakers wife and new child).

Wow, this actually shocked me when I woke up this morning to get ready for the gamecock football game and found out there was a plane crash 10 minutes away from my house. I actually was driving home last night passing the exit for highway 302 (where the Columbia Airport is located) when two cops flew by me like I was standing still. I didn't even know at the time this was right after the plane crash right past midnight. Crazy to think I was right there and didn't even know it and I was supposed to go to the concert but was not able to make it!
All the families that are affected are in my thoughts and prayers.

Update on TMZ says that the reason for the flight WASN'T because C Barkers wife had gone into labour.
Sounds like they have a tough recovery ahead of them. I was in a house fire and only got 2nd degree burns (the kind that don't leave scars) but it took me months of treatment to feel better. Good luck to them!
Charles Still… we called him Che. He went to the University of North Alabama and played football here a bit ago. He was my neighbor in my apt building. Nicest guy EVER!!! This is so sad and we are def mourning over this right now. RIP CHE and the other victims! Hope Travis and DJ make it out ok!

I lost my baby brother 3 weeks ago, and am so sadd I can barely get through the day without crying buckets of tears. I sincerely pray for the families that lost their loved ones, and also for the departed. It's going to take a long time for these two to get over the guilt they will feel of being the survivors, however there is a plan in this tragedy. My brother became ill and passed away within three weeks of getting sick…it makes no sense to us…these sudden and tragic deaths. It's so sad.
I'm in Columbia, SC and I saw the concert last night. It was great, and they were absolutely awesome. I heard from a guy who was driving down the highway at the time of crash that DJ AM and Travis Barker were able to talk, even after they were basically thrown from the jet as it crashed. Adam was airlifted and Travis was taken by ground…which leads me to believe that Travis' burns were not as bad as Adams.
We've got a memorial downtown in Five Points, which is where they performed. There are photos and candles for people to light and place around the fountain.

i live in columbia, sc & decided to pull an awesome move that left me with 2nd degree facial burns-because the medical professionals in town still rely on leaches & the laying on of hands to cure what ails you, i had to visit the burn center in augusta. its the closest, at 60+ miles, facility "equipped" to handle burns. ..i truly hope for the sake of these two, once they are stabalized, they are moved someplace else.
so sad! i wish them a speedy recovery & my heart goes out to everyone involved & affected.

and to the people writing about ”oh, regular planes crash all the time and u don't hear about it cuz the passengers aren't celebrities" I agree with you, but It's awful no matter who is on board! Most people wouldn't want to be getting attention for something like this while they are lying in critical condition with severe burns in a hospital far away from their homes. Personally I wouldnt want to see news of a plane crash no matter who was on board..it's too sad.

LATEST UPDATE: There was a huge amount of white powder around the wreckage site and some motorists on the Interstate reported feeling very euphoric and bitchy at the same time! Doctors say that cocaine burns are a bitch - Amy Winehouse can attest to this!
