PETA wants Ben & Jerry's ice cream to start using HUMAN BREAST MILK for their ice cream instead of cow milk!!!

This is in the wake of a Swiss restaurant owner's decision to start purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers for use in their dairy products.
Has he solicited Jamie Lynn Spears for help?
PETA is serious, though, claiming that it makes more sense to use milk intended for human babies instead of milk intended for cow babies. They say that the use of human milk will decrease the suffering of dairy cows.
Okay, we know that PETA is a little, shall we say, passionate, but um…have they heard of soy milk? Human breast milk is just a tad bit extreme!

Have you ever seen a fistulated cow? Talk about gross! Then as the cows stand there chewing their cud, someone walks out with a flame torch like they are going to do some welding. But that is to burn of the little pubes around the cows nipples before they attach the machines for sucking! Cows didn't seem to mind either. The flame going between their legs or the big giant hole in their side. And they live longer. Weird.
PETA only does these stunts to get media attention, I seriously doubt they believe anything other than attention will come from their tactics.

First of all, I've never had a problem digesting milk, so I don't get what some of you are saying on here. I grew up on a farm and from first hand experience I can tell you that the cows on my farm were not treated unethically.
Secondly, if cows aren't milked on a regular basis they will suffer udder infections and die if left untreated. But that's humane?
Thirdly, milking is not painful for them so I'm not understanding the issue here. It's not unethical to milk a cow.
Fourthly, how on earth would they ever get enough human milk to make thousands of gallons or quarts of ice cream? Humans do not produce enough milk.

However, EVERYTHING a woman eats does get transmitted in one form or another to her milk. Sharing human milk on a mass scale would be nearly impossible due to dietary restrictions on both milk producers (lactating women), and those drinking the milk.
As a nursing mother I could not eat dairy products because my daughter had a reaction. Also mothers with infants that display any sort of nut allergy cannot eat nut products.
You can only pasteurize so much - cows eat a limited array of food.

Cows do not have to be pregnant to produce milk. Their milk is more rich in nutrients when they are pregnant because their body is getting ready to feed the baby, but cows produce milk whether or not they are pregnant.
Of course it's bizarre and shocking because we're about the only species that consumes milk past infancy and milk from another species. I don't think what PETA is asking is extreme. After all dairy cows do indeed suffer for your ice cream.

Jesus Perez, don't be such a reactionary! When you take the statement at face value, of course it seems odd, but you actually have to look at the facts.
No other animals besides humans drink the milk from other animals, and no other animal besides humans drink that milk past the first stages of life. It is extremely unhealthy to do otherwise. The treatment of cows is terrible and the added hormones and antibiotics cause serious problems in our bodies. No one can do the research for you, there has to be a certain amount of personal responsibility, but we get no where when we close our minds and encourage others to do the same.
Welllllllll- women don't have UDDERS and cannot store much more than 4-6 ounces per breast when their infant is about 6 months old- so is he thinking of having a "woman farm" where he uses milking machines? Human milk is not the same fat composition of cow's milk. And really, would you not have some unpleasant mommy flashbacks in your head if you drank breast milk?
Humans are the only animal that even DRINKS milk past infancy. We should go whack PETA on the hand for this one. They could do so much good for animals, but the crazies took it over.

You couldn't be more wrong. Cows do not produce milk constantly, and please excuse my being blunt, but that should be common sense to everyone. Cows produce milk when they give birth, and will continue to do so until they "dry off."
One more reason why even though I'm a full hardcore vegan, I absolutely despise being related in any way to PETA!

I once lived on a farm and I can tell you that if you go without milking a cow it can kill them. So we are actually saving the cows life by milking it and using the milk in ice cream. Plus it's just Yummy!

Something must have gotten lost in translation here. PETA couldn't really mean that. All that said, breastfeeding is the best thing anyone can do for their baby's health and well-being. But keep the ice cream as it is!

1) Dairy cows aren't generally mistreated, at least on private farms. If big bad commercial farms are mistreating their cows, fix that. Farming shouldn't be corporate anyway. Future Farmers of America, where are you?
2) The human body is perfectly capable of and suited for digesting a wide range of protein, both animal and plant based. Cow milk is similar enough to ours, as is goat and sheep milk, that we CAN digest it. Some people have problems with it, but some people are allergic to cats, dogs, pollen, etc. too. Should we conclude that humans aren't meant to be outdoors (where the pollen is). Yea, we've evolved past the point of being able to wander outdoors.
3) So MANY products you consume every day are made with milk, that to say people can't digest milk, is just retarded. I know every time I eat bread it curdles in my stomach.
4) Let's discuss all of the things that are unique to human beings (drinking/suckling another species milk is NOT one of them and you'd know that if you had ever been on a real farm that had dogs and cats running around). If your conclusion is that because no other species drinks the milk of another species, it is wrong for us to do it… then lets test your logic. No other species paves roads, writes books, uses the internet, wears clothing, celebrates christmas, goes to school, makes art, watches movies, etc.
5) Soy is ok in moderation, but the natural chemical components in it can harm us if consumed in large quantities… if you replaced all dairy with soy, including the dairy used in the ingredients of other foods, I'm pretty confident that it would qualify as "large amounts" of soy.

Wait a minute, wait a minute. I know it goes totally beyond our current thinking, but if you really think about it, we are getting our milk currently from other species. If you think about it, that's fucking weird in and of itself. We feed human babies our own breastmilk (at least some of us do!)…what is really the big deal? While wearing my leather trenchcoat, Ive been eating a regular diet of meat and vegetables all my life and I stay healthy and not sick at all, I even love dear meat. To be technical, the reason why milk cows have to be milked so much is because they get pumped full of chemicals and hormones in order to make them over-produce. If left to their own natural cycles, they would have just enough to feed their babies and would not feel any discomfort.
But PETA is still being psycho about this whole thing.

That is stupid. How do they expect B&Js to get the milk? Most women who are lactating are using the milk for their own child, and without the constant suckling, the milk supply will diminish over time, even with pumping. Women would have to rely on herbal formulas to try and keep a supply going.
What's next? Are they gonna want us to eat rocks because "plants have feelings, too!?"

At approximately around the age of 4 years old, humans lose the ability to secrete the enzyme LACTASE (located in the intestinal villi); therefore making it IMPOSSIBLE to absorb and digest milk properly.
Not everyone is "lactose intolerant", but NO ONE can properly digest milk after a childhood because LACTASE is required to berakdown LACTOSE.. MEDICAL SCIENCE. no lie!
Okay PETA has gone way too far. I lived in front of a dairy farm for 14 years and dairy cows are treated very well. Milking them doesn't hurt them at ALL. All they do is stand there while they get milked they don't even feel anything. AND breast milk EWWW. There is a reason why we all stop breast feeding, because it only benefits babies. PETA needs to calm down and stop imposing their values on everyone else. I don't think anyone should stop eating meat or drinking milk if they don't one to.

Re: Love & Faith – We actually cannot digest many natural foods - vegetables and fruit included. In fact, you will find there are parts of nearly ALL food we cannot digest - that is why we excrete. For example we cannot digest the cellulose in spinach - should we no longer eat spinach? Included in this is CORN, Corn is made up of much cellulose, our bodies enzymes can only digest alpha gluclose, not beta gluclose - this is passed through out excrement. Peas are the same as well. We do NOT digest fiber (also cellulose), it moves through our system helping our body to excrete.
I feel like the "we do not digest" argument is moot. I appreciate it, but really I think focusing on the animal rights aspects is a better argument.

You could potentially encounrage women with low socioeconomic status to get pregnant for the sheer fact of getting money. It brings in a lot of ethical issues, least of which being children could potentially suffer for this. Women having babies to have milk and not a child, the child will be unwanted then you've got an even bigger problem D How would you collect it? E. Women aren't going to give their milk away for free, it'll cost ALOT and human breast milk is only produced for so long. There's a lot of issues with this and PETA is only doing this for shock value. Come on, we live in a society where women are frowned upon for breast feeding in public, how the hell could you ever convince them to drink human milk?
