McCain Suspends Campaigning - Wants To Postpone Debate!!!!

Filed under: Politik > Barack Obama > John McCain > Sarah Palin

mccain-oh-shiiittt.jpg

The situation on Wall Street is beginning to look so bleak that John McCain has called for a temporary suspension of his campaign in order to return to Washington and address the President and Congress.

He's also requested postponing the presidential debate scheduled for Friday.

Scared????

With this being one of the most explosive and expensive presidential races to date, McCain's decision could jeopardize his standing as debates are an important platform for candidates to express their policies and appeal to the public.

McCain explains himself thusly:

"America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, every corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen….

"It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration's proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

"Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me….

"We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis."

Dayum! Shit's really hit the fan!

But while McCain's announcement seems like a noble re-prioritizing, you have to wonder what happened to the "I don’t believe we’re headed into a recession” statement he uttered not too long ago, as well as his general stance on limited government business regulations.

The developing economic crisis is worrying and with folks' tunes changing and election time drawing close, things are getting tricky!

Obama has not yet responded.

What do U think of this startling new development?

perez ur a looser! get off this mans a$$! I applaud him, more fucking balls than Obama! but im voting Nader anyway!

  2. 202

McLame's ploy is great - he has slick folks working for him, and if Obama refuses, than McLame will say Obama does not care about Main Street Americans.
    -
    -
All the same, it was the unregulated "old boy's club" - that McSame is a part of - that resulted in this mess. It was unbridled greed teamed with a pathetic regulation policy.
    -
    -
What's funny to me is that everyone is calling for "no more golden parachutes" for the executives — folks, the smart ones, who knew this was coming, are already gone . . .
    -
    -
Don't let this FAKE Ploy of McCain - announced at the same time as Sarah Palin's affair (and I mentioned that here 1.5 weeks ago), fool you.
    -
-Please - don't be the stupid American - be the smart ones.

  3. 203

How strong are those fundamentals looking now, dumbass? He's just trying to look presidential, avoid the debate and force Obama to stay out of the spotlight as well.

    Two Words: Political Stunt.

He committed to this campaign. I want a leader who can deal with more than one issue at a time. That is not the image McCain is giving me at all!

  5. 205

Re: cum-gun – mcsame is as boring as nobama………i expect more out someone with a name as kitschy as yours… :)

  6. 206

they're just fucking stalling…. and you know Palin's ass won't be ready for Biden either.. god, they make me sick… :-/

  7. 207

How convenient to postphone this debate, when he knows he will get his ass kicked at this time about the policies his party and him have been laying out for years and are making the american citizens now BLEED! He should at least have the balls and stand there! Not weasel out under the lame excuse that his involvement in this will miraculously solve this mess! Now he can recollect his ideas, trick people into thinking that he is sooo involved with everyone and try and make Obama look bad for actually wanting to discuss what they both plan to do in the next 4 years to solve this situation. AND scare people, because fear is his biggest alliance now. If people vote in fear, then he has power to manipulate and twist. This is LOW!

  8. 208

most likey he ran outta depends cause he knows he's a failure and a liar, and what better way to make it look like he's in it for the country by diverting the attention as if he even knows what the hell is going on…and to save face and if he is for real with his whole "change" thing, why would he meet with Bush? you'd think he'd want to distance himself and move the country forward, not stuck in a rut, pple that want change don't do things like this so close to election time..old man is stalling.

  9. 209

Re: I See Drunk People – #171 Hmmm, try I'm a part of a group campaigning for Human Rights. I'm involved with the Obama camp on a DAILY basis. You have it the other way around sweetie, you're the uneducated person who believes everything that they read and see about the lies and complete fabrications from the McCain camp. I don't even know why I waste my time with people like you. Complete embiciles.

  12. 212

HELL NAH!! WE WANT A DEBATE!! NOW IS THE TIME TO PROVE YOUR WORTH OLDASSMAN!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH STUPID REPUBLICANS!!

    BARRY & JOE 08'!!!

  13. 213

    Re: Traveltothestars

Working on temporary patchwork solutions don't make them go away! Long-term changes to the economic system will! And THAT is where they need to set out their ideas about, in that debate. Tell the people what they will both do in a longterm perspective to make sure this situation nevers happens again and make the economy healthy again! He is weaseling out, and just as expected, loads of people react by saying "aaww, he's stopping everything to help us" Which is exactly the goal of this carefully planned move. Which is spin doctors concocted because they knew Obama would slaughter him in the upcoming debate! That's not what you need in a president, someone to weasel out and work on short term patchwork solutions. You need one with longterm vision and one to make changes in the economic system which is about to flatline the entire global economy!!!

Re: Jenisis – EXXXACTLY…notice how they are hiding out since they went on the view and thought they were treated harshly?
PLEASE, that is a talkshow, what you gonna do when you get into office and the real issues at hand are tossed your way, send Sarah and her white trash family with their guns to shoot at anything and anyone that is pregnant, doesn't wear fur, or own a tanning bed????????

  16. 216

Wow, so Mccain wants to stop his campaign, and actually do his job, people think he's "SCARED" that's the most bullshit thing I've heard.

Have we all forgotten that McCain and Obama still have jobs? That they are still Senators, and still have work to do? Did we forget that? I think we all have. If Obama has any integrity, and is any kind of an American, he will also stop his campaign until this whole financial situation is figured out.

They have not been elected president yet, and last I checked, they still had the title of Senator. They need to get back to work before they go on any more campaigns or debates.

  19. 219

Obama has responded. he does NOT want to postone anything. mccain OBVIOUSLY has something to be scared of….

  20. 220

Re: I See Drunk People – No, no sweetie. Try Illinois.senate.gov and look up the facts. Unless you think the Illinois government page lies (it's not Obama's page) than it looks like he's done MUCH more than what you choose to believe.

  21. 221

    Re: e-rock

At least he doesn't need to read out his speeches from a teleprompter!!! Now go away if that's the best you can do! PUH-LEAZE!!!

  22. 222

They need more time to coach Sarah because they know Biden will tear her apart and ruin their chances at winning.

  23. 223

I don't care for McCain. But Congress needs to get their shit together.

  24. 224

Re: Amy Crackhouse – 31 Well actually it was McCain speaking from a script today while OBAMA rocked in stating his objectives for settling this economy! He was so calm, collected and well spoken! That is the voice I want to hear!
McCain tried to pull a fast one and duck out of the debates! He went on national TV just after returning Obamas phone call regarding a mutual statement about Bushes plan.
Obama is trying to keep this non-partisan. McCain assured him no decision on the debates until after they give their non partisan proposal.
McCain the fucker is running scared and trying to make out like he is the savior!
    More Republican bullshit!
    ……

    Re: JustSayin

These words matter the most as these words will tell you just exactly what both these men have planned over the next four years to turn this situation around and rebuild the economy! Instead of backing out to discuss a patchwork solution to a problem that will not go away once a decision on this issue is reached!

  29. 229

He's right on this one, Perez. I am not a McCain supporter, but I think he and Obama need to postpone their debate to focus on the debacle the United States is in.

  30. 230

Way to scare the unstable american public, mccain

  31. 231

    Re: Twoboys2 – 88 Interesting timing isn't it!

  32. 232

Re: JustSayin – Everything you said is right on! McCain scared of Obama, so delay the debates??? Please! I can't WAIT to see McCain bust Obama open for what he really is…spineless! If you ignorant people understood anything about this crisis and the time restraints involved to get a bill passed this late in the year, you would agree that this needs the cooperation of both sides of the asile, with as many members in attendance as possible. If Obama stays away, it proves that his EGO is bigger than his committment to serve the people in the job he already has. McCain=COUNTRY FIRST…..PROOF!!!

  33. 233

Re: hmomma – But that's just the thing, this decision won't SOLVE anything!!! This is a problem that can only be solved on a long term, a 4 year term. With plans which these two men might have explained to the american people had McCain not back out! This patchwork solution won't prevent any problems further down the line. The economy is screwed and needs severe and serious changes. I want to know about those changes so we won't read the same headlines 6 months from now, with a man in charge who thought everything was just peachy a few months ago!

Re: Suck it Trebek! – Um, actually, it's IMBECILES. If you're going to call someone stupid, make sure you know the correct spelling - otherwise it makes YOU look like an IMBECILE… just saying.

  41. 241

For those of you thinking he's doing this to get out of the debate, get a clue and please dont vote in November. It just shows how ignorant you are to whats going on in America…
Hes putting his campaign on hold to do what he was elected to do..whats Obama doing?? Taking pics with celebs?? Obama is an amazing speaker no doubt he will be amazing at the debate but McCain is just showing us where his heart is and what true leadership means during times of crisis - so back off

  42. 242

McCain shoots his mouth off about Patriotism, not bad for being a coward!! I guess he has finally proven he is a chicken shit. I can guarantee if Obama did this and was loosing or winning, the McCain campaign would go nuts! Why now, he could go on tv and get better results explaining it to all of us in detail, via the debate. Like I said just let McCain go! He will win this for the Democrates yet!!!

  43. 243

Re: LULU~* – Can we PLEASE refrain from grouping all people together???  Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Married, Single, Gay, Straight, Bi, Male, Female - - guess what????  We're all allowed are opinions, and no one group is singular to one ideal.

  44. 244

McCains strategy for this is to bash Obama calling him paralyzed in the face of the economy disaster!
What a joke! This from the man who said "the fundamentals of our economy are strong!", less than 2 weeks ago, while Lehman Bros.and Merrill Lynch were collapsing.
He went on to say later that we should not bail out AIG, then the next day changed his rhetoric again. Confuses SEC with the FEC after stating he would fire SEC chairman Cox.(oops! President cannot do that) "I believe that the chairman of the FEC should resign and leave office and be replaced." Ha,ha,ha!
He is an IDIOT as is anyone who would waste a vote on him! Remember back in 2004 when he stated the economy wasn't his "strong point"? Nothing has changed!
    …………
MCCAIN MORE OF THE SAME! He represents the party that is in power now and is still screwing us over! While the 1% are laughing all the way to the bank!

  45. 245

He truly understands about putting America FIRST, above all else, he knows he is his state's SENATOR.
    ********************************************************************************************************************************
the messiah will leave the business of this country and his senatorial responsibilities to others to achieve his own personal goals….typical!

  46. 246

Um, not scared, just has his priorities in the right place. The economic crisis is so dire that everyone needs to pull together and figure this out…Obama's campaign claims he is "in touch." That is not enough…put your own personal aspirations aside and do your JOB AS A SENATOR to help this country…remember both McCain and Obama chose to keep their current jobs in the senate and have a responsibility to the American people to put that first in an emergency situation. McCain isn't scared, he has challened Obama to debates for months…this is a pretty bad situation and McCain's decision is right on. McCain/Palin '08!!!!

"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"

    Vote Obama!

  49. 249

I think he's using the 'economic crisis' as an excuse to give voters even less time and information to make a decision.

If anything, we should be having MORE debates, so that the American public are clear on what each candidate is going to do for our country and our economy.

    Methinks he's running skeered.

  52. 252

Its bullshit! If McCain isn't prepared then he isn't prepared and should fucking deal, he at least USED TO BE a quick witted public speaker. There are how many other members of Congress working on this??? If he was so concerned maybe he should have been there when the Senate was voting on tax breaks for these companies.

Is it a coincidence that mccain suspends his campaign on the day that news comes out about his running mate palin's affair with her husbands business partner Brad?

  56. 256

Re: omgggg – what kind of stupidity is that? Your statement is ignorant. Tanning bed was purchased by Palin personally - do your research. Yep, got guns, hunt food, wear fur from food items. All sound like fairly self-sufficient traits to me. And your "straight to the grave" comment - grow up.

  61. 261

Re: nikkih86 – they reported that there are only about 20% of the members there you idiot! They need as many Senators there as possible! You don't get it. Even Geraldine Ferraro (D, former VP Candidate) just said on Fox that both sides have been prepared for weeks for this debate! This is not a high school final exam…are you people really that dumb? Hey BARACK! DO YOUR JOB!!! AND GET A PAIR WHILE YOU'RE AT IT.

OH, AND PLEASE LEARN HOW TO SPELL.

  63. 263

A President HAS to do more than one thing at a time. McCain is playing politics with the future of this country. If McCain can't debate AND suggest a fix for this financial mess, he shouldn't be running for the highest office in the land!

    Obama '08, voteforchange.com

  64. 264

Re: jrnpp #248 – - McCain is a US Senator NOW. So is Obama! Barry said he wants to use the debates to put the issues on the table; he's had all this time to do that! There are more debates! He'll get his chance. A issue he wants to lay out is at hand NOW and should be dealt with. He looks like a TOOL to me for not dragging his ass back to Washington and stepping up and doing his JOB. McCain - Country first. Obama - Party first, Country second.

  65. 265

Re: Suck it Trebek! – I think you mean imbeciles, sweetie. I don't give a fuck where you work, anyone that thinks Bush's bailout plan is close to being passed is a fucking idiot. There is no consensus on the best plan of action, not between Republicans or Democrats.

  66. 266

He is scared of the debate because Palin the whore doesnt know shit!

  67. 267

The timing sounds kinda suspect, doesn't it??

  68. 268

The debates are generally a waste of time.
Everybody has their side picked already.
Or if they don't, listening to these 2 guys skirt around issues and make sound-bites isn't going to help.
I'd rather they spent their time doing something useful like sorting out this bailout nonsense.

    RESPONDING TO SEVERAL OF YOU…
    .
**DEMOCRATIC** SENATE MAJORITY LEADER, HARRY REID, SAID YESTERDAY THAT MCCAIN WAS NEEDED IN CONGRESS NOW TO WORK ON THIS!
    .
NOW THAT MCCAIN IS GOING TO WORK TO HAMMER THIS OUT, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF DETAILS THAT NEED WORKING OUT, HARRY REID IS CALLING IT A STUNT AND SAYS, WE DON'T NEED HIM.
    .
HARRY REID NEVER ONCE SAID HIS OWN CANDIDATE OBAMA COULD PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE!
    .
TO RESTATE… MCCAIN HAS BEEN CALLING OBAMA OUT ALL SUMMER TO DEBATE!! OBAMA IS THE WIMPY LITTLE GIRL!!
    .
TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW ME BETTER… NOT THAT YOU WANT TO… I AM A DEMOCRAT WHO IS PRO-CHOICE, PRO STEM CELL RESEARCH AND WISHING FOR A BETTER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM! I AM NOT FOR TAXING EVERYONE TO DEATH TO INCREASE WELFARE (NOT A RACIST THING SO DON'T GO THERE). I AM AGAINST THE IRAQ WAR, BUT AM NOT FOR PULLING OUT AND LEAVING A TERRORIST VACUUM.
    .
IMO MCCAIN WILL NOT APPOINT RIGHT WING EXTEMISTS TO THE SUPREME COURT IN ORDER TO OVERTURN ROE V WADE.
    .
OBAMA CAN'T TAKE A STAND ON ANYTHING AND BACKS DOWN ON EVERYTHING HE HAS SAID. HE HAS ALREADY SAID HE WILL NOT PULL OUT OF IRAQ AND WILL ATTEMPT TO INVADE PAKISTAN NOW!!
    .
HE IS NOT FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, JUST A WATERED DOWN VERSION OF WHAT LOBBYISTS DID TO CHANGE HILLARY'S PROGRAM!
    .
HE HAS NO SPINE!! AND HE STANDS FOR NOTHING!!!
    .
NOR WILL HE EVER STAND UP TO ANYONE ON ANY ISSUE!! I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO RESPECT HIM!
    .
HE JUST WANTS TO WIN SO HE CAN BE… "PRESENT"!!

  71. 271

Re: LULU~* – People need to understand that there is a difference between "deficit" and "national debt" THe deficit is like a budget while the pres is in office, the national debt is what the country still owes or is under water. Our country has never been out of "national debt". A president may have never used all of his budget (still up for debate on Clinton) and had a "surplus". This doesn't mean that we were out of debt or better off.

  72. 272

Obama's motto is "Change" right??? How can you change anything when you're not there to debate or vote! Come on, this is being called the biggest crisis since WW2 and Obama wants to keep on hugging babies? What a joke! His EGO is bigger than the combined IQ of everone supporting him!

  73. 273

Re: PrincessAndrea – sarah palin had nothing to do with the debate that was supposed to take place on friday…her debate is on october 2nd…against biden.

  74. 274

Re: herekittykitty – Then why doesn't he ENLIGHTEN us with the plans he has for the next 4 years to solve this mess. Because this temporary patch that he's abandoning debates for won't do the trick! Everyone knows that to solve this problem we need structural longterm change instead of "quick fixes". So far he didn't HAVE a plan and said everything was fine mere weeks ago when several large companies were crumbling and the economy was flatlining, and NOW he needs to do his job? His party is the one responsible for getting us there, or at least not reacting in time to avoid this entire mess that is affecting the entire DAMN DARN WORLD!!! So tell me again, WHAT is this plan you are talking about McCain supposedly has!

  75. 275

Re: kendoll3000 – BULLSHIT and you know it! He made a choice to commit himself to a job as president, where he has longterm plans for the future which he can explain in debates! Not in majority vote systems like the senate at this time. I think the time is now for these men to set out what their plans are for the future, because whatever the outcome for this bailout vote, we will need DRASTIC changes to the american economic system, so we won't have the same crisis a couple of months from now! I want to hear those plans. NOW!!! Not when it's too late and we are stuck with a man with a track record of denying any economic problems up untill two freakin weeks ago!

And people saying Obama chickening out of debates!?! He was out there, in the country spreading the word to the people. Now people attack him over weaseling out and then defending McCain because debates would be a waste of time anyway!?! Could you please make your mind up already!?! These debates were planned, Obama knew that and was ready, and now McCain is out for a sorry ass excuse and he is being defended!?! GAWD, people are soooo gullible!

  79. 279

This bailout is nothing more than to protect the CIA proprietaries. It is all in the benefit of the Wall St. rich pigs.

  80. 280

Hello, McCain challenged BO to debates throughout the summer but BO declined. He also declined debates with Hillary during the primaries.

So, they offered these loans to people who are not credit worthy. Yes, they became homeowners and ran up lots and lots of debt. And lots foreclosed on their loans. Why? It couldn't be that people are spoiled and irresponsible with their finances could it? We wouldn't want to point the finger at anyone except Bush. That makes people feel better about their rotten lives and miserable finances. They can blame it on anyone but themselves.

PUH-LEASE- I don't think McCain is scared of debating foreign policy with Obama. If anything you'd think Obama would love the delay so he could study up some more on foreign issues. Or maybe he's worried he'll forget everything he's been fed-I mean has learned about it recently.

Re: Leona$ Gho$t – You're an idiot- I had never heard of Obama until about 18 months ago when he started his bid for the Dem nominee. Plus- Pelosi and Reid may have more experience than Palin, but they also have more experience than YOUR PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE. And the reason the dems are being blamed for the financial crisis is because there is some strong ties between certain democrats (Dodds, Obama) and Freddie/Fannie, which is the main reason we're in the shitter right now. How about you learn politics before opening your asshole to talk.

Re: LULU~* – Do you work with people on welfare? Do you have any idea the corruption that goes on in the welfare system? When was the last time you were at a local health department? I am a social worker and I KNOW. The abuses of the system are horrible and we want to give more money that can be abused? This program needs to be overhauled pronto. I am sick of watching my money go to people who won't work and use every government program around to have some money left over for their drugs or gambling. (This is not everyone, but I see it every day) Wake up.

Stop picking on him, he is an old, old very old man. He can't do two things at the same time.

Re: SuziQ – What's great about you, is the fact that you're arguing at me(not with, because I'm not interested in your product) about my spelling and grammatic correctness on a gossip site, in a comments area, about an important issue. Exactly what is your point? Try arguing at me about the topic or something more relevant; then, your harrasing me would become valid. A. I don't need to know how to spell, looks like my message came through very clear. B. I don't write for your type of style-note, however, you still understood what I was talking about, so why waste time critiqing. C. There is no C for I no longer care.

  93. 293

this is crap. this can NOT happen. i'm going to flip my shit. how dare he think he can just cancel the debates.

WHAT JOHN MCCAIN THINKS OF HARDWORKING AMERICANS!!!
20,000 INVESTORS LOST THEIR LIFE SAVINGS WHILE HE WAS FLYING
    ON KEATING'S PRIVATE JET!!!
    ************
The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).

I'm sorry, Republicans. That's rude of me. But I am sorry you have such a terrible candidate. :(

This is one big FAILed stunt.

Re: SuziQ – Oh Dear, where have you been living all these past years. You are so fucking clueless. I am lazy to type, but just read the news for the past 4 years. Read the ads and the trends on house pricing. Small financing corporations would appraise for unreal values and later sell the debts to bigger banks. It was just all a scam. In fact, I even made money of all these mess and I am one of the lucky ones who bought just for investment and sold quickly and not cause I had a family and was buying "home".

That's how all these fucking mess started. And I do remember one time I heard from some lizard at work who was usually struggling with money and even once asked to lend him for gas that he got approval for a 270.000$ mortgage on a condo. I remember that minute I said shit it's going to hit the fan. And if a illiterate as me could smell it come it, tell me how the fuck the administration didn't. Of course they knew and of course I BLAME Bush and his administration.

Re: SuziQ – And also, document yourself a bit more. The problem aren't the homeowners really. In fact, if someone goes to foreclosure is just because they already made up their mind just to not pay the debt anymore. It's not a big deal. Many of these people (at least those ones who were in the same boat I was) are actually happy of give the property to the bank and not be responsible for the property. The real problem is the loss of the bank for the risk they decided to take.

I don't support entirely this diaper change of wall streets for that same reason. Cause they should leave the corporations goes to bankruptcy but that will affect us all. Now if you are going to take 700$ billion from tax payer money. YOU DAMN have to make sure you are going to backup up the taxpayer and not the corporations. That's coming out of my pocket and yours all for scams and bad investors decisions. So you better make benefit for the homeowner and not for the corporation. Don't you think?
