Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain isn't ready to face his first presidential debate, set for this Friday in Mississippi.
As we mentioned earlier, McCain wants to "suspend" campaigning to go to Washington and "help negotiate a financial bailout bill, a dramatic move designed to seize a powerful issue."
But Barack Obama's side isn't having any of that!
A senior Obama campaign official has responded saying that Obama "intends to debate." Adding that, "The debate is on."
McCain is even going as far as calling on the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the debate scheduled for this week in order to "ensure quick congressional action."
In a statement released by McCain's camp, the potential future Pres says, “I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”
When asked about McCain's plan to postpone the first debate because of the administration's bailout plan, chief debate negotiator, Democratic Rep. Rahm Emanuel, said that "we can handle both." Adding that progress is being made on Capitol Hill and that should not stop the debate from taking place.

An Obama campaign official added that Obama is willing to go to DC, "if it would be helpful," but stated that they still intend on debating this Friday as they see no need to postpone.
Mike DuHaime, McCain's campaign political director said McCain is "going to do what he thinks is right. He’ll make a vote as a leader in this country, and people will look to him."
DuHaime added:
“Quite frankly, I think you could ask Sen. Obama if he’s going to do what he thinks is right. I mean, he has never — I believe — never once made a decision that is an unpopular decision or went against the orthodoxy of his party, and was one that was a tough decision to make. . . . Sen. McCain has done that throughout his entire career, his entire life — not just in politics, but his life.
When you start talking about $10,000 per household or per family to go toward bailing out Wall Street, they have legitimate questions about it. People understand that that is a big thing and it affects them, and they do legitimately have questions about, is this really going to go to bail out companies or leaders of companies who now are relying on taxpayer dollars to bail them out, and are going to get these huge compensation packages after they come to the taxpayers for it.
There is some frustration, certainly, in that, and it’s understandable to say the least. And it has not been a quick rush to say yes or no. People understand the gravity of this, want to see it done right, while still understanding the timing factor.”

I think this is going to look very bad if McCain goes to Washington and gets some kind of bill passed and Obama didn't go. I think Obama is going to look really bad to the American people.

Ever heard the saying If Somethings Too Good To Be True it Probably Is? If you KNOW you can't afford to pay for a Huge Loan, then it's not the smartest idea to take one out, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Now I have lived with a Real Estate Apraiser for 3yrs and even he predicted this years ago and this is actually a subject I know well. The Problem is not "lower interest rates" thats a joke…you see there used to be a thing called "Loan Qualifications" so when you asked for a loan your credit, SSN, Job were all reviewed and it was determined if you could get a loan and for what amount. Thanks to the Brilliant Clinton administration they did away with all these "Loan Qualifications" so that any idiot could get a loan, even an Illegal Immagrant, No Credit Checks, No DownPayments, and Surprise Low Interest rates for 1yr, then the interest rates would sky rocket. It is no surprise we are in this crisis because the democratic government decided everyone should be able to own a home, and the reality is that it is not a Right, it's something you Earn through hard work.

Obama isn't gonna look bad! He is still going to DC at President Bush's request to help discuss the issue. He isn't totally ignoring the issue by far! Obama is just choosing to act as he did before, calm and collected and knowing what he has to do as a Presidential candidate, because right now that is his primary role. You thinks as President you can just chose because of crisis to stop doing one thing to focus on another? No! You need to multi-task.
McCain went from one extreme from say "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" to the other where he is shutting down his campaign because of a congressional vote that doesn't need his one vote assistance. I think the other qualified people America has voted into office can handle this without all the BS politics of a Presidential election brought into this mess to strain it anymore. We do not need a scary time in our life's try to be twisted into McCain's political gain. I am very proud of McCains service to our country. It is MORE than admirable. However, he needs to stop tying patriotism to every single thing he does. Just because Obama doesn't agree with him does NOT make Obama "unpatriotic" . That is a typical conservative ideal, every time you don't agree with them you are some horrid political taboo like "unpatriotic" or "sexist" it is such BS!

Does nobody on this site think it is odd that Obama wants to forget his responsibilities as Senator? Don't the people of Illinois deserve to have a senator that is active in decisions that can effect them as all? Just because their Senator chose to run for office does not mean they should be forgotten. Also, it seems odd to me that he rather do "national televised" events such as a debate. Makes you wonder if he wants to work for the people or become a celebrity. I am sure Susan Saradon or Micheal Moore would be THRILLED to work with him!

I do my own research, reading bills and examining voting records. That is where fact comes from. I don't rely on the liberal media. School is great…I graduate in May with my Political Science BA than I go to law school. I believe so many people would benefit from taking PS a even a minor in college. It helps to make you so much more informed and concerned about your government. Too many people in America are ignorant. I lived in Italy for 5 months this past Spring and more Italian knew about our politics than some of my peers. Sad but true.

There will be a debate Friday, trust me! McCain will hold a press conference Thursday/Friday morning, that he worked with Congress on a plan, and it is in action! McCain will make this point! Then he will say that he is a man of action (Barry is not - since Barry is "Just Talk").. First of all Obama didn't say that he wouldn't help… He said that he didn't want their presence in these negotiations to take the focus off coming to a resolution. Reports came out from the Senate Majority Leaders that they'd prefer to not have either Senator there because they are close to coming to a resolution and they don't want Presidential Campaign politics to come into these discussions. So, if you actually watched Obama's press conference what he said was, let's release the joint statement. If it's decided that we are needed there to help figure this out then we can go from there and figure out if postponing the debate was needed but for right now let's move forward as planned… Also, the city in Mississippi where the debate is scheduled to be held will lose MILLIONS of dollars if this event is postponed!! It seems like if the economy if what this is all about then postponing the debate might not be such a good idea… If you don't believe me go check out CNN where there are a TON of articles about all this…

The reason we are in such a mess is because people took out home loans that they couldn't afford, and the people who DO make their house payments in time are probably going to be the ones punished for the other's stupid mistakes. It's not anyone's fault, but the idiots who took more than they could afford. So if you want to point the finger at anyone, how about putting the blame on the people who deserve it, the people who bought something they couldn't afford. And now they're going to be rewarded by getting bailed out? Yeah, not fair at all.

You are arguing Obama's biggest problem. As our potential future leader, he should want to be in the middle of it and not worried about the debate. He stands to lose in the debate, not win. This wait and see attitude is ridiculous. This is a problem where everything else needs to stop and it needs to get fixed. Because if our country can't buy, then we are a country without clients and businesses don't survive without clients. Obama is basically saying my role as 1 of 100 Senators is probably not important but I have a campaign to win, so let me focus on that forget that I am wanting to be President in the coming few months. He said, the next President will have to deal with this problem so why not get it started with some good legislation. Because he doesn't know much about that. He's never really done that much work with successful bills or really writing them.

Trust someone who will be graduating this year with an Honors Political Science BA….I have studied multiple Presidential elections throughout our history and this is a power play! He knows people will just take it a face value and not really think about why he is doing this. How the polls are dropping in his favor and the media's negative response to Palin's UN visit all seem to coincide. This situations in DC has been going on for a little while now and he never expressed leaving the campaign to help. Now, when he isn't doing as well, he wants to go. He is suspending his campaign to take care of issues that really matter, like the economic crisis that we are in. I personally see his actions as very responsible. It has nothing to do with McCain "wimping out." McCain has often in the past wanted to take on Obama in a town hall meeting and HE was the wimp in those times. If Obama really cared about the American people he would follow in McCain's footsteps.
Seems like most people I know and talk to at work are waking up and calling bullshit on old McCain here. Ironically if you vote for a republican aka McCain your important economic problems will never end. How much money is the United States currently in debt for? WAY TOO MUCH, so how is spending that much money to bail everyone out, going to do anyone any good. You’re going to go farther in debt, and the more imaginary money you put into your economy the more your real dollar diminishes.

By the way, it is not correct to compare McCain's "town hall" meeting suggestions to this situation. McCain was asking Obama to come to his (McCain's) campaign stops during pre-scheduled stops Obama needed to make elsewhere. It would have served no purpose for Obama to derail his own stops in order to attand McCain's. It was just silly game-playing, and trying to set up Obama and trap him no matter how he responded, kinda like what McCain is trying to do today. Anyway, back then Obama, as I recall, offered more balanced town hall-style meetings where they could both talk to a diverse crowd and make the most positive impact, but McCain refused those. Why? Because McCain only "wins" when he talks to those who already support him. He just doesn't have the power to win over those that don't. I sincerely believe McCain knows he can't beat Obama in a fair debate. He is only comfortable in an audience of circle-jerking Republicans all chanting "drill, drill, drill!" and dreaming about Palin in her bikini. Sorry to be crass, but I calls em like I sees em. McCain is strong when it comes to talking war and drilling, but on the economy Obama can wipe the floor with him, and he knows it. Don't let that "town hall" spin-fest fool you.

i don't really support either candidate, but i am starting to lean toward mccain… obama is only trying prove that he won't back down, to try and appear tough, and to make out that mccain isn't ready. mccain asked the parties to come together on this, which they need to do. our country is going to shit, we're in a huge financial crisis, and obama is just worried that he is going to be out of the spotlight for a bit. the debated can wait, it's just going to be them repeating the same things we've already heard a million times. i've never liked obama, due to his cocky attitude, but even if i thought he was alright, i wouldn't support him or vote for him because i can't stand that wife of his. her princeton thesis paper is mainly why. the bitch is sitting at princeton claiming to know prejudice? i don't think so. her jacked up teeth/jaw don't help my opinion of her either…

I respect your opinion. We are all entitled to one, and I respect you for actually having one, but you are very misinformed. Misinformed Americans never ceases to amaze me: they side with political candidates who often stand against, and in turn vote against, American people's self-interests. This actually holds true in regards to our now crumbling economy. It's unusual to me that McCain is so interested in the crumbling economy because in a recent statement McCain’s assured the American public that the economy was estentially sound. McCain, along with his friend and fellow Senator Phil Gramm, both voted for a deregulation bill which loosened the restrictions of banks, brokerage houses, and insurance companies. His friend and fellow Senator Phil Gramm also called Americans “a bunch of winers” in regards to "paranoia" concerning a then “mental recession.” Turns out we’re not as drugged up and mental as our health insurance companies try to make us with all those antidepressants! We’re actually not mental, nor is this recession; in fact it is quite the contrary because this breaking down of Wall Street is the worst financial situation Americans have endured since the Great Depression.
This economic crisis is due to these banks, brokerage houses, and insurance companies that have gave excessive loans to American citizens knowing that they could not afford them. They loaned them money, which they could not afford, and then added high and adjustable mortgage rates so when American needed to make a loan payment, they were also charged was a ridiculously high interest rate at unprecedented percentages. Americans, especially due to the already lagging economy, were unable to pay these bad loans, which unfortunately ended in Americans losing their homes and experiencing forced foreclosures. Jobless, homeless, and broke, American citizens and their families are now suffering from the government encouraging this type of practice and chosing to not regulate it.
So, when the money ran out and the banks didn’t get paid back these companies are now losing, or have aleady failed, big time. All of a sudden, these private, and I stress PRIVATE, sectors “need the government to step in,” as explained by President George W. Bush this evening who, along with his Secretary of Treasury, has turned a blind eye to this kind of practice. Government is asking Congress directly, and taxpayers indirectly, to give $700 billion dollars, which equates to $2,300 per taxpayer living in the United States, to pay these banks and lenders back- the very banks and lenders that left countless Americans jobless and homeless! So John McCain is shaking in his boots because of this this crisis, especially since he practically endorsed it and especially because there is a PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE THIS FRIDAY.
McCain is now changing his tune about the state of the economy, while at the same time calling upon Senator Obama to join him and "conquer" it together. I think the rest of the 98 Senators and 435 Members of the House of Representatives are experienced enough to handle it without McCain and Obama. Not to say that McCain’s and Obama’s voices won't be being heard, because they already are, and they are loud. Until the next President can make a final and acceptable proposal to clean it up this mess, I suggest you look at the real issues at hand. I digress… however, yes Obama’s “change” speeches emphasize a need for “change” due to unjust policies endorsed by the Republican controlled White House of the past eight years. And fuck yea, Obama is concerned about debating with McCain because this is a perfect scenario which Obama would apply this “change” that is necessary for a health democracy, especially one which seems to be sucking in its last few breaths.
And you are wrong in that “most voters have decided who they are voting for,” and that “the debate process does not change this” because, my poor dear, 40 days is like an eternity in the political realm. A mere 40 days can change A LOT in a tight political election, and a quite crucial election at that. Especially considering that the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee is being videotaped by newscasting stations in her “crash course” in foreign policy. She only got her passport two years ago! She was in the PTA three years ago! Now she has a 3/4 chance of becoming the next President of the free world if McCain is elected! She will have our nuclear codes! And breast feeding at the same time! It’s almost laughable! The deserved winner and future President of this elecion is so obvious that it is almost amusing that people see it any other way. Like you. You misinformed American. You poor misinformed American.
