It's On!

Filed under: Politik > Barack Obama > John McCain

wenn2068614.jpg

Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain isn't ready to face his first presidential debate, set for this Friday in Mississippi.

As we mentioned earlier, McCain wants to "suspend" campaigning to go to Washington and "help negotiate a financial bailout bill, a dramatic move designed to seize a powerful issue."

But Barack Obama's side isn't having any of that!

A senior Obama campaign official has responded saying that Obama "intends to debate." Adding that, "The debate is on."

McCain is even going as far as calling on the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the debate scheduled for this week in order to "ensure quick congressional action."

In a statement released by McCain's camp, the potential future Pres says, “I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

When asked about McCain's plan to postpone the first debate because of the administration's bailout plan, chief debate negotiator, Democratic Rep. Rahm Emanuel, said that "we can handle both." Adding that progress is being made on Capitol Hill and that should not stop the debate from taking place.

Amen!!!!

An Obama campaign official added that Obama is willing to go to DC, "if it would be helpful," but stated that they still intend on debating this Friday as they see no need to postpone.

Mike DuHaime, McCain's campaign political director said McCain is "going to do what he thinks is right. He’ll make a vote as a leader in this country, and people will look to him."

DuHaime added:

“Quite frankly, I think you could ask Sen. Obama if he’s going to do what he thinks is right. I mean, he has never — I believe — never once made a decision that is an unpopular decision or went against the orthodoxy of his party, and was one that was a tough decision to make. . . . Sen. McCain has done that throughout his entire career, his entire life — not just in politics, but his life.

When you start talking about $10,000 per household or per family to go toward bailing out Wall Street, they have legitimate questions about it. People understand that that is a big thing and it affects them, and they do legitimately have questions about, is this really going to go to bail out companies or leaders of companies who now are relying on taxpayer dollars to bail them out, and are going to get these huge compensation packages after they come to the taxpayers for it.

There is some frustration, certainly, in that, and it’s understandable to say the least. And it has not been a quick rush to say yes or no. People understand the gravity of this, want to see it done right, while still understanding the timing factor.”

So what do U think?

Should the debate go on, or should McCain be allowed to go to DC and fight for what he believes in?

I think this is going to look very bad if McCain goes to Washington and gets some kind of bill passed and Obama didn't go. I think Obama is going to look really bad to the American people.

Re: mb00 – Really, what on earth makes you think that you have the right to question what makes a good soldier. The amount of tourture and pain they endure is not a joke. I usually don't try to belittle people; however in your case I will make an exception. My father was a POW and would go with out food or water for days on end. When was the last time you went without food and water or better yet your computer or cell phone. Right now we are still protecting and fighting maybe if you had some balls you would be fighting instead of typing you arrogant jerk.

With Great Freedom comes Great Responsibility, as an intelligent American it is your duty to take Personal Responsibility for your actions. Ever heard the saying If Somethings Too Good To Be True it Probably Is? If you KNOW you can't afford to pay for a Huge Loan, then it's not the smartest idea to take one out, but it doesn't surprise me at all. You give out free money and people are going to take it without thinking of the consequences and it's an ignorant thing to do, but thats not even the biggest problem…..
    -
Now I have lived with a Real Estate Apraiser for 3yrs and even he predicted this years ago and this is actually a subject I know well. The Problem is not "lower interest rates" thats a joke…you see there used to be a thing called "Loan Qualifications" so when you asked for a loan your credit, SSN, Job were all reviewed and it was determined if you could get a loan and for what amount. Thanks to the Brilliant Clinton administration they did away with all these "Loan Qualifications" so that any idiot could get a loan, even an Illegal Immagrant, No Credit Checks, No DownPayments, and Surprise Low Interest rates for 1yr, then the interest rates would sky rocket. It is no surprise we are in this crisis because the democratic government decided everyone should be able to own a home, and the reality is that it is not a Right, it's something you Earn through hard work.

DEAD ON! BTW, I teach PLSC and am currently working on my PhD. My Foreign Policy class is reading the Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli , US foreign Policy by Steven Hook AND Huntington's Clash of Civilizations
My Civil military relations group is reading Charles Moskos "Don't Ask Don't Tell and how this policy effects the civilian population which Military personnel are drawn from and of course profiles on selected Domestic Terrorism. How's school going?

  11. 411

Go figure. Mccain wants to go do the JOB he was elected to do, while Obama wants to AVOID THAT some more. That piece of crap Obama has done nothing as a Senator and you MORONS are snowed by his "Let's get the debate rolling,," Funny when he avoided it for so long. He simply wants to devote less time to the people who elected the idiot as Senator. THAT IS THE TRUTH!!!!!!

Convenient? Have you even been watching the market?

  13. 413

In back-to-back news conferences on Tuesday, Obama and McCain outlined nearly identical priorities for what the bailout legislation should include, such as benefits for taxpayers, restrictions on executive pay, and bipartisan oversight.
Later that evening, Obama received a phone message from Sen. Tom Coburn, a conservative Oklahoma Republican with whom he has worked previously on legislation. According to Obama, Coburn suggested that a joint statement outlining these shared principles might be helpful.
At 8:30 a.m. yesterday, Obama called McCain to run the idea by him, but the two did not talk.
About 2:30 p.m., Obama was leaving a rally at a minor league baseball stadium in Dunedin, Fla., when McCain returned his call. In a conversation that lasted about five minutes, Obama said the two discussed the joint statement idea and exchanged contact information so their aides could follow up.
Obama said McCain also raised the idea of suspending his campaign and delaying the debate. Obama said he did not rule out either option, but told McCain he wanted to see how events unfolded and suggested the candidates first address the immediate priority of speaking with one voice before Bush's address. By the time Obama returned to his hotel about 20 minutes later, McCain had already made his announcement.

  14. 414

    .
COMPLETELY A CALCULATED DECEITFUL ACTION AND POLITICAL PLOY BY MCCAIN! THIS IS TO DELAY THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AS WELL SINCE SARAH IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM READY TO DEBATE BIDEN. SHE WILL FALL FLAT ON HER ASS WITHOUT MORE REHEARSAL!
    .
DON'T VOTE FOR A DUMBSHIT! MORE OF THE SAME REPUBLICAN LIES! BUSH2 CHENEY2

  15. 415

Obama isn't gonna look bad! He is still going to DC at President Bush's request to help discuss the issue. He isn't totally ignoring the issue by far! Obama is just choosing to act as he did before, calm and collected and knowing what he has to do as a Presidential candidate, because right now that is his primary role. You thinks as President you can just chose because of crisis to stop doing one thing to focus on another? No! You need to multi-task.
McCain went from one extreme from say "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" to the other where he is shutting down his campaign because of a congressional vote that doesn't need his one vote assistance. I think the other qualified people America has voted into office can handle this without all the BS politics of a Presidential election brought into this mess to strain it anymore. We do not need a scary time in our life's try to be twisted into McCain's political gain. I am very proud of McCains service to our country. It is MORE than admirable. However, he needs to stop tying patriotism to every single thing he does. Just because Obama doesn't agree with him does NOT make Obama "unpatriotic" . That is a typical conservative ideal, every time you don't agree with them you are some horrid political taboo like "unpatriotic" or "sexist" it is such BS!

  16. 416

Re: && I got a thing for you! – I THINK YOU MAY BE A LITTLE CONFUSED. OBAMA CONTACTED MC CAIN IN REGARDS TO ACTING ON THE FIN'L CRISIS OUR COUNTRY IS FACING AND IT WAS OBAMA WHO SUGGESTED THAT THEY SEND OUT A JOINT STATEMENT. BOTH SHOULD BE CAPABLE OF MULTI TASKING

  17. 417

    Re: arrora

I'll tell you what's funny. Wouldn't it be funny to see Obama standing there at the debate by himself and having the camera cut to Washington showing McCain working on a bailout plan?

Re: Steink – 398 LOVE THAT! LOL!

  19. 419

Does nobody on this site think it is odd that Obama wants to forget his responsibilities as Senator? Don't the people of Illinois deserve to have a senator that is active in decisions that can effect them as all? Just because their Senator chose to run for office does not mean they should be forgotten. Also, it seems odd to me that he rather do "national televised" events such as a debate. Makes you wonder if he wants to work for the people or become a celebrity. I am sure Susan Saradon or Micheal Moore would be THRILLED to work with him!

  20. 420

    Re: sweetpiece

What are you referring to? You need to elaborate your statements before you attack mine. Debating must not be your thing, emotion obviously is. And, I don't need a website to tell me things. I do my own research, reading bills and examining voting records. That is where fact comes from. I don't rely on the liberal media. I think that is the problem with many liberal minded people like yourself, they don't know how to clearly defend their viewpoint or do research. And again, you haven't even stated what is allegedly wrong with mine. You give me some website. Like I care?

  21. 421

Re: longhorn – DID OBAMA SAID TEH DEBATE WOULD…NO. HE SAID AMERICANS SHOULD HEAR FROM BOTH OF THEM NOW MORE THAN EVER YOU HAVE TEH OPPURTUNITY TO HEAR HOW THEY WANT TO HANDLE THIS CRISIS U WILL ALSO TEST TO SEE HOW THEY CAN DEAL WITH THE MANY ISSUES/PROBLEMS AND BS OUR COUNTRY FACE.

I lived in Italy for 5 months this past Spring and more Italian knew about our politics than some of my peers. Sad but true.

At Least McCain has accomplishements, what has Obama Done, considering his only experience is being a senator for 154 days of which he did NOTHING. See the difference is I'm not afraid of the unkown because unlike You, I actually know whats going on in this country and in this world. 25. 425

Okay Perez, listen closely…There is no reason why John McCain would go to DC. HE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SIT IN ON THE TALKS, AND DOES NOT GET A SAY ON THE FORMATION OF ANY OF IT! This is a political stunt, call it what it is!!! He is sinking in the polls, and he is doing what he has been doing thus far when his numbers go down, he pulls out the dramatics to get the attention off of the real issues that matter to Americans.

There will be a debate Friday, trust me! McCain will hold a press conference Thursday/Friday morning, that he worked with Congress on a plan, and it is in action! McCain will make this point! Then he will say that he is a man of action (Barry is not - since Barry is "Just Talk").. McCain wil fly out Friday to the debate and then hand Barry his ass in the debate (he doesn't need a teleprompter).. Uhh Umm, Uggh Umm…. Ya'll Just got PLAYED….. Truly Rovian! Re: jefdo – Sooooooo sick of this argument. Obama 1st off is going to DC to talk with McCain ad President Bush to help assist the process. SOOO ya he is going!!
2nd Obama also contacted his party and asked them is they feel they need his assistance he will come. Obama knows, unlike McCain, that presidential politics can cloud the primary issue and do more harm than good.
I don't know how people can be made so ignorant to think if you do not follow John McCain you therefor, put you country second? So childish… it is sad.

Democrats caused all this mess! They did (Research - would really help you all out - A TON)…. Sorry Bush doesn't have a little "easy button" on his desk to cause all of this! Democrats did all of this! DEMOCRATS, DEMOCRATS, DEMOCRAPS, DEMOCRAPS……….. Please Research the FACTS, and the REALITIES, you really can't be all the DUMB, can you??? Don't Believe all that is told you to believe, learn the facts, THEN make your decision!

  34. 434

First of all Obama didn't say that he wouldn't help… He said that he didn't want their presence in these negotiations to take the focus off coming to a resolution. Reports came out from the Senate Majority Leaders that they'd prefer to not have either Senator there because they are close to coming to a resolution and they don't want Presidential Campaign politics to come into these discussions. So, if you actually watched Obama's press conference what he said was, let's release the joint statement. If it's decided that we are needed there to help figure this out then we can go from there and figure out if postponing the debate was needed but for right now let's move forward as planned… Also, the city in Mississippi where the debate is scheduled to be held will lose MILLIONS of dollars if this event is postponed!! It seems like if the economy if what this is all about then postponing the debate might not be such a good idea… If you don't believe me go check out CNN where there are a TON of articles about all this…

  35. 435

Gee..McCain wants to help his country and Obama wants to further his propaganda…hmmm…what should I choose???
    Duh!

  36. 436

    Re: cyatic910
That would be classic, we already know Obama's track record in the Senate so it's no surprise he wouldn't want to go to Washington and actually do the job his getting paid for, he has nothing to contribute anyway =)

  37. 437

They should NOT postpone the debates!! That's the sacrifice you make to run for the Presidency. You can't have your cake and eat it too!! Obama would not be getting off easily if it was him!!

Barry is a tool! McCain has asked Barry numerous times to debate him, and Barry has refused every time. Can you not see the difference??? This is completely laughable.. Barry is a total joke at this point!

  43. 443

Re: honeybee – Last week John McCain said, “The fundamentals of America’s economy are strong.”
Today, John McCain has dropped 9 points behind Barack Obama in the polls!
AND, today, John McCain wants to “suspend his campaign and postpone Friday’s Presidential debate” because “our economy is in crisis.”
OPEN YOUR EYES, AMERICA. This is one of the nastiest and most cynical political stunts ever attempted in American Presidential politics.
Call it what it is! It is not noble; it is not honorable! It is despicable!
McCain is once again grasping at an American crisis and playing it for whatever he can gain politically.
He chose Palin for that reason, and he halted the Republican Convention, not because of the suffering, but because he needed an excuse to not have Bush and Cheney appear!
McCain’s slogan is NOT “country first” but “winning first!”
    _________________

thank you honeybee it seems like people FORGET the TRUTH!!!! MCCAIN IS NOT CAPABLE.

  44. 444

    Re: coco

The reason we are in such a mess is because people took out home loans that they couldn't afford, and the people who DO make their house payments in time are probably going to be the ones punished for the other's stupid mistakes. It's not anyone's fault, but the idiots who took more than they could afford. So if you want to point the finger at anyone, how about putting the blame on the people who deserve it, the people who bought something they couldn't afford. And now they're going to be rewarded by getting bailed out? Yeah, not fair at all.

And also feel free to point the finger at all those large coorparations who also put themselves in this mess by giving these idiots home loans that they also knew they couldn't afford. But the all mighty dollar speaks, and all anyone saw was dollar signs and status symbols.

But like you are so quick to point out, it's easier to blame the government, than to put the blame where it needs to go. On our fellow idiot Americans.

Who do you think is going to pay for this whole mess? The people who DO make their payments on time. THe people who DO pay their taxes every year. The people who work hard every day, and for what? To bail some ass monkey out of a crisis. Yeah, seems real fair.

hey dumbasses…. the word POSTPONE is different than the word CANCEL. mccain wants to postpone the initial debate, not cancel it, so that he can try to help our country out of this financial crisis, which is his job as a senator. obama will appear to be more concerned with winning the election than helping out this country if he indeed declines.

TEAMWORK IS SUPOSE TO MULTIPLY TALENT BUT INSTEAD IM LOOKING AT DUMB AND DUMBER

  49. 449

Oh how dare McCain try to take part in figuring out this mess of an economy. He didn't say he didn't want to debate. Just not now. The economy effects us all every single day. A debate is not the most important issue right now. I'm not on either side but I respect what McCain is trying to do.

  50. 450

    Re: dancingmom

You are arguing Obama's biggest problem. As our potential future leader, he should want to be in the middle of it and not worried about the debate. He stands to lose in the debate, not win. This wait and see attitude is ridiculous. This is a problem where everything else needs to stop and it needs to get fixed. Because if our country can't buy, then we are a country without clients and businesses don't survive without clients. Obama is basically saying my role as 1 of 100 Senators is probably not important but I have a campaign to win, so let me focus on that forget that I am wanting to be President in the coming few months. He said, the next President will have to deal with this problem so why not get it started with some good legislation. Because he doesn't know much about that. He's never really done that much work with successful bills or really writing them.

  51. 451

It is just sad people are sooooo ignorant they do not see this is a political power play by McCain.
Trust someone who will be graduating this year with an Honors Political Science BA….I have studied multiple Presidential elections throughout our history and this is a power play! He knows people will just take it a face value and not really think about why he is doing this. How the polls are dropping in his favor and the media's negative response to Palin's UN visit all seem to coincide. This situations in DC has been going on for a little while now and he never expressed leaving the campaign to help. Now, when he isn't doing as well, he wants to go. It all just has too perfect of timing to be a mistake people!

why suspend ads? Puhlease! We have a 5 week time table to elect our president. Are we going to suspend the election? Neither are even on the committee that will be making the decision! AGAIN, NEITHER ARE EVEN ON THE COMMITTEE THAT WILL BE MAKING THE FINAL DECISION! All these stalls and not addressing the Issues are ridiculous. As a matter of fact, when Obama addressed the economy early in the campaign most of you Repubs were on here DENYING we were on the cusp of an economic depression. Let me see if I have this straight…..
Barak: Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded. If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience. If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

  56. 456

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian. If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

  57. 457

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society. If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you're very responsible. If your wife is a Harvard graduate laywer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's. If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
    OK, much clearer now.

  58. 458

why suspend ads? When Perez posted the fact that unemployment was up 6% and posted on the alarming rise on Foreclosures most repubs IGNORED these facts and stated either A people were lazy expecting handouts or B Well I know how to live beneath my means it's time u dems learn to do the same… tsk tsk tsk. Re: jace – 449 Graduated top of his class. McCain bottom of his class.
And.. he did not vote for an illegal war. In the Illinois State Senate , he sponsored 823 bills.
He was successful at passing legislation sharply restricting the gifts that Illinois politicians could accept from lobbyists. Illinois has notoriously weak government ethics laws, and the Gift Ban Act was the first major new restriction since the Watergate era.
Obama also helped set up Illinois' "KidCare" program that provided health care to children in families that did not qualify for Medicaid.
John Bouman, president of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, said Obama's work helped make the program more consumer-friendly. He also said Obama was often willing to give up credit for the legislation if that helped win Republican support.
    .
    MCCAIN MORE OF THE SAME!
    .
PS I'M GOING TO SLEEP NOW! GOODNIGHT

  60. 460

Re: arrora – That would be classic, we already know Obama's track record in the Senate so it's no surprise he wouldn't want to go to Washington and actually do the job his getting paid for, he has nothing to contribute anyway =)
    ___________________________________________________

U CAN HANG ON TO THAT SAME OLE LONG DRIED OUT EXPERINCE ALL YOU WANT. MCCAIN ADMITTED HE HASNT EVEN READ THE 3 PAGE BILL??WTF? BUT THATS OK I THINK ALL YOU SEE IS REPUBLICAN AND SO ITS MONKEY SEE MONKEY DO. YOU'RE LIKE A ROBOT. HEY AT LEAST YOU HAVE PASSION

  61. 461

McCain is a US Senator and has a serious job to do in DC at this time. Obama can stay in FL and Mickey Mouse around if he wishes. McCain is not afraid to debate Obama. McCain has experience facing much harder situations than a debate with Obama. That statement is absurd.

  62. 462

Re: jace – 449 Sorry go carried away. You did ask for only one.
    .
    VOTE FOR THE SMART GUY!
    OBAMA

  66. 466

So terribly sad that so many here are so clueless regading how serious the situation is. I can only hope that these same people aren't old enough to vote.

  67. 467

I never thought I would post on this stupid thing but here it goes…
of course perez didn't mention the fact that mccain has asked obama to go with him to 10 townhall meetings, why didn't Obama go?
McCain afraid of Obama??? are you kidding me? come on people read foxnews and cnn, not just perezhilton.com. Is Obama really going to go to DC and vote on the issue or just list himself as 'present' like he has done so many times? I generally like Obama, seems like a good guy but I do not want him as President.

Come on Mario aka Perez, atleast attempt to be fair in blogging the news.

wow, i really hope no one relies on perezhilton for their political news.

McCain afraid of Obama??? are you kidding me? come on people read foxnews and cnn, not just perezhilton.com. This crisis is so much more important than the debate which they can do later, it needs to be resolved ASAP. 69. 469

He is suspending his campaign to take care of issues that really matter, like the economic crisis that we are in. I personally see his actions as very responsible. It has nothing to do with McCain "wimping out." McCain has often in the past wanted to take on Obama in a town hall meeting and HE was the wimp in those times. If Obama really cared about the American people he would follow in McCain's footsteps.

  70. 470

Seems like most people I know and talk to at work are waking up and calling bullshit on old McCain here. McCain needs to man up and face his biggest fear, which is debating about the issues, especially economic issues, with a man who is smarter than he is. Say what you want about Obama, doesn't matter if you support the man or not, but you know he will whoop serious ass on McCain in a debate. Especially now. McCain is seriously irritating me. I wish a boulder would roll down a hill and just smoosh him. But back to the issue at hand, no, McCain should not try to weasle out of the debate by using the economy as an excuse. One night of debates will not injure anyone's endeavors to help the government & economy right now. Puh-lease. And the Republicans better quit trying to spin this and use it as a sneaky way to bash Obama. No more bullshit, you dirty down-low nasty lying politicians. Enough is enough. I'm not even an Obama fan and I can't take it anymore. McCain is a wimp. A wussy little wimp who is trying to use a national crisis to avoid turning in his homework.

  71. 471

    Re: LusciousLiz
    GREAT points!

  74. 474

I noticed some people saying they wont vote for Obama, because he wants to keep the debate as scheduled. They stated we should fix the economy first. Ironically if you vote for a republican aka McCain your important economic problems will never end. How much money is the United States currently in debt for? WAY TOO MUCH, so how is spending that much money to bail everyone out, going to do anyone any good. You’re going to go farther in debt, and the more imaginary money you put into your economy the more your real dollar diminishes.

Re: mb00 – being captured makes you a bad soldier? what the fuck is wrong with you? you think POWs deserve what they get? that they let themselves be captured on purpose? what about those who died, are they horrible soldiers too? i normally don't wish bad things on people, but i hope you get captured by some nutjob, held for at least 5 years, and tortured without mercy. i hope they break your bones, cut the tips of your fingers and toes off with shears, and mostly, i hope they water board your ass continuously! :)

SO if you don't like it why are you reading it and making an account to comment on it???!!

  77. 477

    john mccain is a coward.

  78. 478

** NEWS FLASH TO ALL **
don't any of you get that McCain is NOT on the committee that will be voting for this???!!!…therefore he will NOT be voting or even in on the meetings on the topic..so ya…he cant handle a debate and going to DC to round up some votes….sad….really

    Re: nikkinrex
mccain said "the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times." if you were to look up in the dictionary what the word 'fundamental' means, you would find that it means a basic principle, rule, law, or the like, that serves as the groundwork of a system. the FOUNDATION of america's economy. one would assume he may be referring to the fact that america has had a very successful economy for a long time, based on the foundation that our economy was built on. yes, right now our economy is facing hard times. but that does not dispute the fact that our economy was built on strong fundamentals.

of course the media will only pull part of the quote out in order to pander to their desires of making mccain look like an idiot. typical liberal media.

  81. 481

By the way, it is not correct to compare McCain's "town hall" meeting suggestions to this situation. McCain was asking Obama to come to his (McCain's) campaign stops during pre-scheduled stops Obama needed to make elsewhere. It would have served no purpose for Obama to derail his own stops in order to attand McCain's. It was just silly game-playing, and trying to set up Obama and trap him no matter how he responded, kinda like what McCain is trying to do today. Anyway, back then Obama, as I recall, offered more balanced town hall-style meetings where they could both talk to a diverse crowd and make the most positive impact, but McCain refused those. Why? Because McCain only "wins" when he talks to those who already support him. He just doesn't have the power to win over those that don't. I sincerely believe McCain knows he can't beat Obama in a fair debate. He is only comfortable in an audience of circle-jerking Republicans all chanting "drill, drill, drill!" and dreaming about Palin in her bikini. Sorry to be crass, but I calls em like I sees em. McCain is strong when it comes to talking war and drilling, but on the economy Obama can wipe the floor with him, and he knows it. Don't let that "town hall" spin-fest fool you.

  83. 483

i don't really support either candidate, but i am starting to lean toward mccain… obama is only trying prove that he won't back down, to try and appear tough, and to make out that mccain isn't ready. mccain asked the parties to come together on this, which they need to do. our country is going to shit, we're in a huge financial crisis, and obama is just worried that he is going to be out of the spotlight for a bit. the debated can wait, it's just going to be them repeating the same things we've already heard a million times. i've never liked obama, due to his cocky attitude, but even if i thought he was alright, i wouldn't support him or vote for him because i can't stand that wife of his. her princeton thesis paper is mainly why. the bitch is sitting at princeton claiming to know prejudice? i don't think so. her jacked up teeth/jaw don't help my opinion of her either…

  84. 484

Another issue, if McCain really expects us to believe he needs to blow off the debate for bigger issues, then why doesn't he send in his trust VP pick to debate? I mean, th republicans keep trying to sell us on how strong and qualified she is. NO MORE EXCUSES. No more lies. No more manipulations.

  85. 485

Another question, if the few hours McCain would spend debating make THAT much difference, what's he doing getting make up and doing interviews all over the place right now, such as the one with Katie Couric?(sp) Why is he not so "busy" in Washington? It's such BS. God I hope we Americans all stand up to this.

  86. 486

Re: && I got a thing for you! – ok. you are not good at politics but you might try to read/watch the news… obama said they can do BOTH debate and "fixing" my point is: neither mac cain obama nor god will fix the economy in a few days.

  87. 487

Re: mb00 – if mccain using his pow story to gain sympathy (i don't think he is, or has), it's still irrelevant to the fact that you stated he's a 'bad' soldier because he was captured. if he was using the story to gain sympathy, so what? you may not like that he's doing that, but you can't decide that tactic equals bad soldier due to capture. that reasoning doesn't even make any sense.

we've all heard the story about obama's mother being 18 and single when she gave birth to him, and him then growing up 'poor'. is that not a ploy to get sympathy? oviously, or he wouldn't even bring it up - at least mccain's story is relevant, seeing as it shows he's patriotic and defended out country, which are great qualities for someone who will lead our country to have.

  88. 488

Perez I fucking love you…but your political slant fucking pisses me off. Do you really think McCain is afraid of some typical political presidential debate with Obama? Get real. He was tortured and held prisoner for five and a half years! I highly doubt a little political debate irks McCain in the slightest…I'm not sure anything can scare McCain after what he went through as a POW. Perez, if you Support Obama, that is great…but PLEASE PRESENT BOTH SIDES FAIRLY. You are very influential (obvi)…but don't make people's decisions for them by not properly looking at the issues from both sides. McCain/ Palin '08!!!!!!

  89. 489

I tell you what I want, I really, really want……….Steven Colbert and Tina Fey…. please proceate and save our race…be the next Brange!!!!!! Stina, Folbert…………….PLEASE!!!!!! SAVE Us! Soylent green, is people!!!!

  90. 490

If you are on the West Coast watch Dave Letterman at 11:30pm….McCain was scheduled to be a guest and he called Dave and said and I QUOTE "I have to catch a last minute flight to Washington and I have to cancel" then he went down the street to Katie Couric's set, had his make-up done (on camera) and was on her show instead…THIS LIAR WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT

  94. 494

See!! Obama is proving himself yet again in terms of how very competent he is to become the next President of the United States. The President must always be able to handle many predicaments and situations at once when they come up at once because there is no time to handle one problem at a time. Obama has proven himself again that he can and should be able to handle more than one problem at a time by preparing to debate on Friday and handle this economic issue, that we are all facing right now, at the same time because they are both important and both must be done immediately. He's not a wuss, like our little Senator Mccain, who got overwhemled and wants to concentrate on one problem at a time. Wouldn't we all like to handle just one problem at a time, but sorry Senator Mccain, life doesn't work like that at all mister.
And, Mccain is not president yet, why is he telling Obama to do the same as he is??

  95. 495

    Re: MINXLIVES – #366
The thing is, I don't want a committee making the "final decision". We need to hold our State Senators and Reps responsible for this mess. EVERYONE'S FEET SHOULD BE IN THE FIRE on this one. Are you content to let the "committee" decide this?!?!?

  96. 496

Dear "&& I Got a Thing For You"
I respect your opinion. We are all entitled to one, and I respect you for actually having one, but you are very misinformed. Misinformed Americans never ceases to amaze me: they side with political candidates who often stand against, and in turn vote against, American people's self-interests. This actually holds true in regards to our now crumbling economy. It's unusual to me that McCain is so interested in the crumbling economy because in a recent statement McCain’s assured the American public that the economy was estentially sound. McCain, along with his friend and fellow Senator Phil Gramm, both voted for a deregulation bill which loosened the restrictions of banks, brokerage houses, and insurance companies. His friend and fellow Senator Phil Gramm also called Americans “a bunch of winers” in regards to "paranoia" concerning a then “mental recession.” Turns out we’re not as drugged up and mental as our health insurance companies try to make us with all those antidepressants! We’re actually not mental, nor is this recession; in fact it is quite the contrary because this breaking down of Wall Street is the worst financial situation Americans have endured since the Great Depression.

  97. 497

This economic crisis is due to these banks, brokerage houses, and insurance companies that have gave excessive loans to American citizens knowing that they could not afford them. They loaned them money, which they could not afford, and then added high and adjustable mortgage rates so when American needed to make a loan payment, they were also charged was a ridiculously high interest rate at unprecedented percentages. Americans, especially due to the already lagging economy, were unable to pay these bad loans, which unfortunately ended in Americans losing their homes and experiencing forced foreclosures. Jobless, homeless, and broke, American citizens and their families are now suffering from the government encouraging this type of practice and chosing to not regulate it.

  98. 498

So, when the money ran out and the banks didn’t get paid back these companies are now losing, or have aleady failed, big time. All of a sudden, these private, and I stress PRIVATE, sectors “need the government to step in,” as explained by President George W. Bush this evening who, along with his Secretary of Treasury, has turned a blind eye to this kind of practice. Government is asking Congress directly, and taxpayers indirectly, to give $700 billion dollars, which equates to $2,300 per taxpayer living in the United States, to pay these banks and lenders back- the very banks and lenders that left countless Americans jobless and homeless! So John McCain is shaking in his boots because of this this crisis, especially since he practically endorsed it and especially because there is a PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE THIS FRIDAY.

  99. 499

McCain is now changing his tune about the state of the economy, while at the same time calling upon Senator Obama to join him and "conquer" it together. I think the rest of the 98 Senators and 435 Members of the House of Representatives are experienced enough to handle it without McCain and Obama. Not to say that McCain’s and Obama’s voices won't be being heard, because they already are, and they are loud. Until the next President can make a final and acceptable proposal to clean it up this mess, I suggest you look at the real issues at hand. I digress… however, yes Obama’s “change” speeches emphasize a need for “change” due to unjust policies endorsed by the Republican controlled White House of the past eight years. And fuck yea, Obama is concerned about debating with McCain because this is a perfect scenario which Obama would apply this “change” that is necessary for a health democracy, especially one which seems to be sucking in its last few breaths.

  100. 500

And you are wrong in that “most voters have decided who they are voting for,” and that “the debate process does not change this” because, my poor dear, 40 days is like an eternity in the political realm. A mere 40 days can change A LOT in a tight political election, and a quite crucial election at that. Especially considering that the Republican Vice Presidential Nominee is being videotaped by newscasting stations in her “crash course” in foreign policy. She only got her passport two years ago! She was in the PTA three years ago! Now she has a 3/4 chance of becoming the next President of the free world if McCain is elected! She will have our nuclear codes! And breast feeding at the same time! It’s almost laughable! The deserved winner and future President of this elecion is so obvious that it is almost amusing that people see it any other way. Like you. You misinformed American. You poor misinformed American.
