It's On!

Filed under: Politik > Barack Obama > John McCain

wenn2068614.jpg

Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain isn't ready to face his first presidential debate, set for this Friday in Mississippi.

As we mentioned earlier, McCain wants to "suspend" campaigning to go to Washington and "help negotiate a financial bailout bill, a dramatic move designed to seize a powerful issue."

But Barack Obama's side isn't having any of that!

A senior Obama campaign official has responded saying that Obama "intends to debate." Adding that, "The debate is on."

McCain is even going as far as calling on the Commission on Presidential Debates to postpone the debate scheduled for this week in order to "ensure quick congressional action."

In a statement released by McCain's camp, the potential future Pres says, “I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.”

When asked about McCain's plan to postpone the first debate because of the administration's bailout plan, chief debate negotiator, Democratic Rep. Rahm Emanuel, said that "we can handle both." Adding that progress is being made on Capitol Hill and that should not stop the debate from taking place.

Amen!!!!

An Obama campaign official added that Obama is willing to go to DC, "if it would be helpful," but stated that they still intend on debating this Friday as they see no need to postpone.

Mike DuHaime, McCain's campaign political director said McCain is "going to do what he thinks is right. He’ll make a vote as a leader in this country, and people will look to him."

DuHaime added:

“Quite frankly, I think you could ask Sen. Obama if he’s going to do what he thinks is right. I mean, he has never — I believe — never once made a decision that is an unpopular decision or went against the orthodoxy of his party, and was one that was a tough decision to make. . . . Sen. McCain has done that throughout his entire career, his entire life — not just in politics, but his life.

When you start talking about $10,000 per household or per family to go toward bailing out Wall Street, they have legitimate questions about it. People understand that that is a big thing and it affects them, and they do legitimately have questions about, is this really going to go to bail out companies or leaders of companies who now are relying on taxpayer dollars to bail them out, and are going to get these huge compensation packages after they come to the taxpayers for it.

There is some frustration, certainly, in that, and it’s understandable to say the least. And it has not been a quick rush to say yes or no. People understand the gravity of this, want to see it done right, while still understanding the timing factor.”

So what do U think?

Should the debate go on, or should McCain be allowed to go to DC and fight for what he believes in?

Obama is a Politician, not a Statesman. Obama shrinks from challenge. Obama makes decisions based on political expediency not principal or belief. Obama uses people and connections for political gain then dumps them when those people make him look bad, exposing his bad judgment. Obama is a good speach. Obama is a figment of the imagination. Obama wants a weak America. Obama talks about change. There are two kinds of change, change for the better or change for the worse. There is no indication his change will be the former. Obama is full of himself. Obama keeps missing the 3am phone call.

  2. 602

Harry Reid on said Tuesday the following when it appeared Republican support for the bailout bill was not there - “We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.”
    -
Then, when McCain called his bluff and decided he needed to get involved, Reid said - "It would not be helpful at this time to have them (McCain and Obama) come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy."
    -
So what does this fool want? Does he want and need McCain's help or not? You can't have it both ways Sen. Reid.

what the hell — learn to multi-task, mccain!

McCain is very slick. Canceling the debates helps McCain.By postponing the debates he's playing wind down the clock knowing full well BATTLEGROUND STATES are voting EARLY. Winding down the clock helps McCain and the Repubs know this. Many of the battle ground states & east coast states have early voting. McCain is attempting to keep this race tight in the battleground states and not lose the ground he has since this crisis started. I also love how he hasn't read the 3 page bill but is going to DC to help pass a bill he's not even on the committee of!! Neither of them are!

  5. 605

Oh please….McCain wants to do what he believes in?? We all know that McCain is a poor speaker and a slow thinker. He will be OWNED by Obama in a debate, and it just took him this long to figure it out. COUNTLESS government officials have stated that it would be best if presidential politics were not involved in negotiations. There's nothing McCain can do. He is trying to make it look like he is actively helping problems in Washington. It's bullshit…. This is one American citizen he's not fooling. In the words of David Letterman….something doesn't smell right….

    Re: MINXLIVES – #608
So, if McCain is "shirking" the debate to try and get out of it…Why has he REPEATEDLY challenged Obama to town hall debates and re-offered that invited just last week and states there should be MORE debates between them for the American people to have no doubt on where they both stand… He is not canceling the debate–he wants it postponed.
And just because he is not on the committee who is drafting the economic bailout bill–doesn't mean he shouldn't be there to VOTE ON IT–that's his primary job (and Obama's)…. currently the bill does not have enough support to pass and they either need to fix the bill or get more votes. McCain is going back to washington to do both.

The way I see it, and I think a lot of america does, is, " I will go fix things or try to help fix things" although a very political move, it does show leadership, then you have" call me and let me know what you want me to do" very much a follower. So you choose, a Follower who is the person who recieved the 2nd largest amount of money from Fannie Mae and from Lehman Brothers, hence he made tons of money that he isn't giving back to fix the problem, or a LEADER someone who wants to right the wrongs that the Dems made so much money off of. I think that it ain't no rocket science!!!!!

  16. 616

    Re: Jenny2 – Post 615
McCain was asked to come in and help move this along. There are many free market Republicans (myself included) that are not on board. McCain's involvement is primarily to get this bill passed. Sen Harry Reid and President Bush both have asked for McCain to try and help persuade those Republicans that are against this bill to change their minds. His role is to be the catalyst that makes the legislation possible.

  17. 617

    Re: Smurfette1 – #617
    Let's be realistic…
The debate is in Mississippi on 9/26 at 8pm… stage/lighting everything takes time to be set up.. Voting takes place in D.C. The Senate is expected to debate and vote late on the economic bail out on 9/26—how can either candidate be in two places at once…
BOTH OBAMA & MCCAIN's FIRST PRIORITY is to fulfill their duty in voting in the Senate…bump the debates till next week and take steps to throw a life preserver to the economy now.

Here's a word for you MULTI TASK a 2 hour debate is not going to kill the man as a matter of fact the debate is on Foreign Policy and this bailout also addresses bailing out overseas banks are the ISSUES (plural) not what's important? HE HASN'T READ THE BILL!!! So please, spare me Why even VOTE on something you haven't even read? Hmmm? How Long has this crisis been in the works? How many fumbles has he made trying to address this while on the campaign trail? REPUBS sat on here citing 1% economic growth to debunk the evidence of a recession. While they are gone for a week Battleground states are voting early. And I never stated he was 'shirking" anything, I stated CANCELING THE DEBATES HELPS McCAIN b/c he was slipping in the battleground states. I also stated that fine you want to cancel debates ur cll however why suspend the campaign AND ads?? Are we now going to cancel the elections?

  20. 620

As president, both candidates should be able to multi-task and the debate is such an important part of the whole campaigning process. Who does McCain think he is? He is slapping us (the American People!) in the face! This was all a strategy to make it look like he is oh so concerned with the economy, when in reality, there is nothing HE can do about it…he is the one that said economics is not his fortay! Obama needs to continue the debate, well it won't really be a debate with just him…lol…but he needs to take questions from the public! Speak to us! Some of us actually want to hear what they have to say!

    Re: SquirrelLives – #620
    1. Squirrel–I am not a libtard…I do know why McCain is going back to Washington
    2. I too am a "take responsibility for your own actions" republican, but in this case…I think that we HAVE to step in.
    3. This crisis is a direct result of friggin Billy Clinton in the 90's mandating that mortgage lenders not discriminate against low/moderate class and allowing welfare/un-employment to be considered income (no joke check equal credit opportunity act wording) when applying for a mortgage and for scaring mortgage lenders with high fines if they do "discriminate" or in my opinion make good business decisions. Because of this mess of thinking welfare/un employment recipients would be responsible enough to faithfully pay a mortgage (HELLO–if they were responsible the majority of them would have a friggin job!) and the shirk of responsibility of these mortgage defaulters. The core financial institutions of this country are faltering. It is almost humanly impossible for anyone (even those of good credit standing) to get a car/mortgage/or student loan due to the financial hault because of these welfare shmucks crap. Hence the need for the bailout.

Re: WakeUpPeople – i disagree, i think it's the other way around. i've been seeing what obama is up to, but now my parents are as well. they're both die hard democrats, never voted otherwise in their lives, or even considered it. they think anyone who belongs to the working class and votes republican is insane. they though obama was great when he first showed up, but now they're both considering voting republican. if you knew them, you'd be completely shocked. i was, but it's a good shock - i am so glad they're seeing what's going on. obama is a fraud, and just a piece of shit in general. hopefully enough people will realize this before election day rolls around…

  24. 624

    Re: MINXLIVES – #622
Your libtardness is reaching mt. everest heights…
    1. IF McCain is slipping in the polls as you say and wants to bump the debates to help…THEN Why would he suspend campaign ads–that would only make it worse. The TRUTH is he has signified that he will focus on his first responsibility and trying to gain more votes is secondary to him doing what he needs to for the country. He went back to Washington to get the job done–something Obama knows nothing about considering his multitude of "present" votes.
    2. Let's not forget it is OBAMA who got MORE financial contributions from Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac (the same companies that were just bailed out) then any other candidate!!! AND even though he is a first term Senator he is 2nd only to John Kerry with highest contributions from Fannie/Freddie within the ENTIRE Senate. So, please don't try to talk smack about John McCain causing this when it is quite clear these greedy liars on Wall street are Obama's pals NOT McCain's.

Ok I'm not going to respond, I understand a few typos, but at the very least do a tad bit a proof reading before you post. I don't need to twist reality, I'm well informed of world affairs and I'd rather have a President with 20yrs in the senate, then 154days in the senate of DOING NOTHING, Whoopie he showed up, and then never bothered to vote on anything, thats not a President who knows how to make desicions, Obama is a JOKE, just like your post filled with typos.

  27. 627

to Jenny2 - you are spot on…Obama has happily accepted large "donations" from many, many financial institutions, including Fannie, Freddie and Lehman…was happy to take the money that came from the profits they were generating from subprime mortgages, etc…he is a crook. He also has surrounded himself with radical black leaders his entire life, especially Rev. Wright…how he can pretend he doesn't agree with his anti-white, anti-American rhetoric is beyond me when he attended the church for years and even counseled with Rev. Wright…read Obama's books…he is definitively anti-white and American. If he wins, we should change our motto to "Welcome to Cuba." McCain is a true American, not perfect, but nonetheless a dedicated public servant.

Actually, I'm more concerned about the National Security of this Country, and Obama frankly I find Dispicable. Not only is his expereince a JOKE, he lies about his upbringing, first Rev Wright is his Spiritual Leader, then he disowns him when everyone finds out his radical preachings, he want's to raise taxes on an already shaky economy, he acts like he's a celebrity instead of a Presidential Candidate, His Logic is he wants to pull out of Iraq..huge mistake…and then put soldiers in Afghanistan contradicting the idea of pulling soldeirs out of a war, we should still be fighting anyway…he's a Flip Flopper…I can go on and on..

I think the debates should definately go on! Why can't McCain make his debate on Friday and Obama can? Can't he address this issue along with all the other issues facing our economy at the debate? Shady move on his part…which is why I support Obama!

    1. Your post of #622 didn't seem to contain flowers/chocolates back to me—the DIFFERENCE between my post back to you is that mine contained FACTS and not exaggerations.
    2. Your an "independent"…please. I have read DOZENS of your posts and you are liberal. You can try to package it with a different name (independent) but if it walks and talks democrap—it's a libtard
    3. Perhaps your tired "you hurt my "independent" sensitivities" is an excuse not to recognize the FACTS that I posted. The Obamamessiah took more campaign donations from Freddie/fannie then anyone else. So once again it speaks volumes to Mr. Obama's character as to whom supports him—Let's review:(Hugo Chavez, Hamas, terrorist Ayers, Rev. Wright, Farrakhan, and now corporate liars from Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac)

The man is only asking for the debates to be postponed. It was OBAMA who was the one who ran away from the DOZENS of requests for prior town hall debates between the two of them.

  34. 634

    Re: Jenny2 – Post 625
You are precisely on point here. Clinton and the left cried foul regarding the practice of "red-lining". Using the Community Redevelopment Act, signed into law by Jimmy Carter in 1977, Clinton gave organizations like ACORN and other community organizations the power to prevent banks from expanding into markets if they didn't make these loans. The banks were forced to make loans to unqualified applicants. The banks hoped that rising property values and refinancing would lower their risk to the loans they knew would default. This was a recipe for disaster. We were set up, for political purposes, by politicians looking increase their power and influence. Bastards!!

Exactly…this would be the penalty if they hadn't followed Clinton's friggin demand to lend more to low/moderate income families and not discriminate against welfare/unemployment recipients by 2001.

Failure to comply with the Equal Credit Opportunity Act or Regulation B can subject a financial institution to civil liability for actual and punitive damages in individual or class actions. 1. Any idiot who bought a fluctuating rate mortgage IS to blame for their own foreclosure. It is not anyone else's fault that they moronically fell for a 2% rate that jumped up 5x due to the rate fluctation cause. Rule #1 if it sounds to good to be true–it usually is. People's stupidity does not necessitate my sympathy.
    2. These financial institutions HID their losses…as in they lied. How was anyone democrat/republican suppose to know the truth when their books were cooked.
    3. The MAJORITY of mortgage foreclosures come from people simply buying more than they can afford not from job loss. It has been the snowball effect of accumulated credit. Friggin Oprah had on her show on 9/23 a family who had $90,000 in credit card debt because they bought a house they couldn't afford and then paid their mortgage on their credit card. AGAIN–STUPIDITY FROM PEOPLE DOES NOT NECESSITATE SYMPATHY. What I, and other Republicans have sympathy for is the hard working Americans who can't get a loan now because the moronic defaulters have ruined so many of the banks that there is no cash flow…it is because of THAT that I have sympathy and think we need to bail these bastards(the institutions and mortgage defaulters) out.

Now Squirrel, You know I absolutely adore you! I hope your day is going well. Again we may disagree but I do support your opinion on this economy crisis we are in. It's a catch 22 b/c I support the bailout but not corporate welfare My fear is turning over 700 billion dollars ( the number is boggling) and not be atleast 80% sure it will put us even keel. Can you imagine spending that money for nothing or barely nothing coming of it? This is the one instance I actually support strict regulations on this money And I really hate the idea of bailing out foreign banks who in turn will take the bailout money and buy up all our assets! Again, the thought is just insane.

  44. 644

It doesn't suprise me that Democrats will use this as an attempt at making Mccain look unprepared; however, he has already asked Obama to debate him a dozen times which have been declined. The economic problem that America is facing is a little more important than a debate on foreign policy. It is not suprising that the inexperienced junior senator his more concerned about coming out on top in the presidential debate instead of working for a bipartisan solution to the severe economic problem that our country faces.
    Defeat Obamunism

The last thing we need is more government interference when government interference got us into this situation. Hurricane Ike hit Texas and did all that damage with a cost $11 billion. The government interferes in the free market and does the damage of 64 hurricanes. It's scary to think about the amount of money they are about to spend. What happens if the market rebounds, these loans become profitable and the government actually MAKES money on this. Do we all get a check? Will they pay down our outstanding debt or shore up Social Security? I doubt it. They'll spend, spend, spend.

So yes you are quite accurrate on that. That's why I call it a catch 22. If there is a bonanza, I highly doubt we would get the $ back considering the amount of debt we currently are in. Bush says we need to do this NOW well there's a lot of things Bush said we needed to do now and look where we are b/c of that sentiment. Running around chasing our tails trying to resolve things instantly is a recipe for disaster and if it fails EVERYONE will try to distance themselves from it while we are left holding the bag.

I'm on the fence on this. Part of me say's don't pass the bailout. It may be bad tasting medicine, but in the end we will be better off letting the market correct itself. On the other hand, if we can prevent the pains of protracted market correction with the bailout, then do it but do it right. Like you say, we need oversight and transparency that ensures this will not be a money grab by those that will benefit. I don't know who to trust here. My own instincts are conflicted. That's why I want to resist the bailout in order to prevent a further disaster and fleecing of the taxpayer. I feel like the speed at which they are working is being deceptive in some way. Haste makes waste.

I only hope that if this does get resolved in 3-7 days that judicial review is in place for it. This is also why I want them to take their time and I really honestly can't support suspending the campaign AND the debates with 5 weeks to decide. COngress can stay in emergency session while the committee hammers out the details, hell some of us do have to work overtime at our jobs right! You are very correct that haste makes waste. I want no loopholes in this 'bail out".

  54. 654

They need to debate. Man up to the podium McCain! We've heard enough from Caribou Barbie to last us a lifetime. Your turn to shine.

    Re: Urdesire
See there Lies your problem, I actually Graduated College Years ago and I know my World History, you on the other hand might want to take a break from your Text Books and Look at Whats Really Going on in the World NOW..
    -
How about the fact that Russia Recently Announced it's giving weapons to support Iran, Or maybe you even tuned into Ahmadinejad Speech in NYC just a few days ago when he said 'The American Empire will Collapse"..since you probably don't know he is the Leader of Iran, another country currently trying to build a Nuclear Weapon to attack the US and Isreal…..or how about N Korea Rebuilding their nuclear Facilities…
    -
Try Paying more attendtion to the World We Live In Now and maybe then you'll want a President with Actual Experience, who understands Foreign Policy, Understands the Military, and Understands the Enormous Threats this Country Faces.

I already know nothing will change your mind because as Usual The Blind Follow The Blind!

Oooh yes because your posts are so informative and insightful, please post when you actually have something to say that doesn't make me believe you a Twelve Year Old =)

    To all-
I have said this before and will continue to express the sentiment again. Name calling and inner fighting solves nothing all it does is create negative energy and stifles intellgent conversation. We all love this country for better or worse and I believe as diverse as our opinions are we don't need to resort to assumptions nor playground antics. How can anyone possibly think others will take your opinion seriously or even think on what you say when you belittle a person? Washington never wanted parties to exist in this country for he felt party politics would be a divisive tool to blind the masses. I completely agree w/ that sentiment. Try to be open minded and considerate…. until ofcourse someone is disrespectful then I say IGNORE THEM don't waste your time feeding that tripe, focus on open intelligent debate.Debates allow us to think beyond our vision and also helps us understand each other. DOn't dilute it w/ namecalling assumptions and half truths. No one is better than anyone on here and we are ALL stuck in the same boat. I christened the boat "Royally Screwed" feel free to change the name! Gotta go to work! ;)

Arrora…I am actually a 41 year old college grad myself and you may want to back up a few pages and read my VERY INFORMATIVE posts which had several positive responses before you start talking out of your butt honey…you are one ANNOYING person…I think more than a few posters would agree with me on that….

    Re: PoisonBitchyIvy
Your so clueless it is sad! Ok 1) OO so he took donations from F&F but McCain has over 8 head lobbyist working on his pay role? Idk it sounds like he is more influenced by big business than Obama to me 2) McCain said this last year? I also think our Democratic congress tried passing multiple bill to better our economy and country but that stupid conservative Bush used more vetoes than any other President in America history… 3) I am SO sick of hearing about John McCain being a better candidate solely because he fought for our country! I think it is VERY respectable and MORE than admirable what he did. HOWEVER it does not make him better than Obama as a person or as a leader. Obama paved the way in Harvard for black students and graduated at the top of his class (remember McCain graduates 3rd to LAST in his class) and gave up high paying jobs to work for the stat of IL union steel workers

I just feel both these men are great men and we should stop looking down on Obama because he never wore our countries uniform. It is ignorant!

  61. Big D says – reply to this

    661

    Facts:
McCain has been asking Obama for debates throughout the summer. And Obama declined!
McCain has been offering Obama 10 town halls and even to pay for his airplane expenses. Obama declined.
Now we have a debate on foreign policies (basically nothing to do with the economy) and Obama is all of the sudden eager to debate?????
    Give me a break people.
The people who will vote for McCain will do so because of his experience and unorthodox approach of things.
It’s the one that blindly call for change that are stuck with a problem. And for everyone saying that McCain voted 95 % with Bush …please check the facts…Obama voted more with Bush than any other democrat!!!!
But then again the republicans are masters in setting traps and the democrats are just as good getting into them.

  62. 662

Debate should happen, a president has to be able to do more than one thing at a time.

  63. 663

just to increment the number of comment lol to whoever realized :P

  64. 664

    Obama for president….
seriously ppl you can't vote for a republican, they will ruin the country
George Bush is living proof for that
and you Hillary bitches, stop trying to think about it and vote for the sake of the party
McCain in no use for us!!!!!!!!!!
    OBAMA!!!!

  65. 665

let's fix this hell hole were in.
seriously, we live in a fucked up world. let's get it fixed now instead of waiting til god knows when.

    Re: LusciousLiz
Well when directing a Post to me or choosing to make a reply to me, make sure you have something substantial to say besides"whah whah whah you're annoying blah blah" or I'll just ignore it. Last I checked most 41 years olds don't talk like that and I find it pretty annoying myself.

  70. 670

AURORA…GOOD JOB AT IGNORING MY POST….IDIOT…AND THE ONLY ONE WHO SAID WHAH WHAH WHAH WAS YOU…GET A LIFE HUN….YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY LATELY HAVE YOU? IT'S OBVIOUS

  71. 671

    Re: LusciousLiz
Sigh, Once again a 41 year old name calling like a twelve year old. Again if you are going to direct a post towards me put some kind of substance in it, debate an issue, all you do is childish name calling which doesn't phase me in the least bit because frankly I think you're an "idiot" I just don't feel the need to reply to your silly posts to call you one. Do you need me to copy and paste your reply to me because you obviously cannot remember your own Gibberish? And it's Arrora, spelled that way for a reason which you don't need to worry your little tiny head about.

  72. 672

Arrora like the toilet paper you mean? Sorry. I think it's too funny how you say you won't reply to me but you just can't help yourself. Have a nice weekend and like I said….get out more often

  73. 673

    Re: LusciousLiz
I find it funny how you keep posting Gibberish and your "Get Laid More Comment" just says so much about your character. See I'm not a slutty whore and I actually have morals and values so Sex is not needed for my brain to function properly. At the age of 41 I sincerely hope you're married and aren't a washed up old hag whoring yourself around because let me enlighten you…..Slut does not equal having a life or in your case brains. Have a Fabulous weekend and maybe this weekend you can try Not worrying so much about getting laid and instead pay more attention to Politics and the World beyond your doorstep…you might actually learn something besides how to spread them. Now please Reply back when you have something substantial to say besides whining "you're annoying, get laid" Boo Hoo. As usually though I know how you youngsters are always having to get the last word in, so I'm sure there's plenty more dribble to come out of your mouth unless it's too full of other things =)
