Anti-Smoking Gets Graphic

Here's some good news for people trying to quit smoking.
Starting Wednesday in Britain, cigarette boxes will feature printed images on the packets showing just how gruesome and harmful smoking can be.
The pictures will show cancerous lungs and throats, as well as yellow teeth and other side effects.
They'll also feature new warning slogans, such as "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" or "Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes."
Warnings will start appearing today and will be mandatory starting next October.
They'll also be printed on all tobacco products starting October 2010.
Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) director Deborah Arnott said, "The stark images in the picture warnings on tobacco products are a call to action to smokers to quit, and the evidence is that they work. The evidence also shows that picture warnings work better on plain packs, so we are urging the Government to also implement legislation to require the removal of pack branding to maximise the impact of the these images."
Just in Britain, one in six from their population of 60 million is a smoker, which is the reason the government has been taking action to reduce the numbers.
Other preventive measures have also been put in place.
In the UK last year, the smoking age was raised from 16 to 18. Also, smoking in enclosed public places was banned across the country since July 2007.
Wonder when/if they'll start using those images in the US.

AND another thing: I read somewhere that that lady in France (Jean what's her name)who lived to be 125 said she smoked all her life and quit when she was something like 99 or so ONLY because her eyesight was failing and she couldn't see to light them safely. I'm not saying smoking isn't harmful but you alcoholics get off your high horse. If smoking is banned then alcohol should be too.

i think canada has been puting picktures on cigarette packs for a long time noe and it hasnt stoped people from smokeing they arent as bad as the ones you have but still i really dont think they are gonig to help

We had these in Australia and it did nothing. my mum works for a company where to government ask about alcohol and drug things, as well as the news. They told them it wont do squat, and it did squat. They also told them putting a tax on "alcopops" in aus would do squat…and it did squat
the only people these images affect are the non-smokers.
Its like the anorexia pictures. anorexics look at them and say "If she can do it so can I" it doesn't deter them at all

they have had these pictures on boxes in Canada for YEARS.
Whatever, Canada has had those images for years now, and much good it has done. Those gross and scary pictures and captions have graced our cigarette 'packs' for many years, covering 50% or one half of the package, and smoking is still strong. Consummers just get used to them and block them out. Perez, please do your research before posting such an article, it's not the first time this has happened, but its better than nothing, I suppose.

Aggghhhh, this is old news Perez. In Australia we already have these pictures printed on our packs. They have also banned smoking in all pubs and clubs now!

I work in smoking cessation support, and when graphic warnings were introduced in New Zealand earlier this year, I experienced first hand the increase in smokers making the CHOICE to quit. Nobody was forcing them to, but the images personalised the very real effects of smoking, in a way that is harder to ignore that numbers and statistics.
These images are hard to look at but do save lives.
canada has had pictures like this on cigarette packages for a while time. they aren't as gruesome as the first guys neck, but we have the lungs, heart and teeth. it doesn't stop people from buying cigarettes.
I don't smoke but I do find this sort of government bullying and control-freak behaviour to be disturbing. Additionally, if I were an owner of a cigarette company I'd be pretty angry that the government was interfering with my business and doing their utmost to run me *out* of business! I agree smoking is not exactly good for people's heath but it everyone's personal choice to be self-destructive or not. If the government can do something like this, then what's next? Will they decide people are getting too fat and ban junk foods or else tax them so much that poorer people won't be able to afford to overindulge? I don't like the idea of the government wielding this kind of control over citizens (or at least attempting to). If you give them an inch they'll be taking a mile next.
This attack on cigarettes has me very puzzled. The government doesn't put gruesome photos of accident scenes caused by drunk drivers on liquor bottles or photos of obese people on packets of snack foods, for example. I have to wonder why the tobacco industry is being so maligned in particular.

I smoke. It's a stupid health destroying habit, but it's my choice to have that habit so as long as I'm not blowing my second hand smoke in anyone face. Either way, I think it's a great idea to put these pictures on packs. In fact I think they should put pictures of disected hearts and clogged arteies on ho-ho packages. I also think they should put pictures of green fatty livers on vodka bottles. Why stop? Why not put pictures of late stage STD's on KY lube boxes? Every car advertisement should have pictures of the ice caps melting, and fatal crashes. It's good to scare people with the truth.

this has been on canadian cigarette packages for forever! It doesn't work…they need to ban smoking in public places it's cut down on the number of smokers in Ontario.
What the fuck! has anyone thought about putting pictures like these on fatty foods or alcohol products? Maybe pics of obese peoples fat asses on mcdonalds packaging would help, but no because thats seen as taking the piss out of the overweight. They already do this in Thailand and it seems to work on me. I smoke fewer over there than when im here in the states.

in 2001 i think, they banned smoking from all bars, restraunts, etc.
I think it's better, I know someone who went to the only place in manitoba that did not ban smoking (which they do now) and it as disguisting!!

I don't know… didn't work in Canada… we've had those images on packs forever and peeps still smoke… Perez, you should check out Alan Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking… I think this guy is onto something… different approach entirely… no scare tactics, but very effective

We've had these in New Zealand for ages man, at least 6 months. Tobacco products without images have become completely illegal to sell here now.
