It was obvious that she'd been told to say that as an excuse to cover up for any times that she couldn't answer a question. It's absurd to think the American people would be gullible enough to see that as anything other than the cheap trick it was. Isn't that straight out of Debate 101? Cover your ass right out of the gate to explain away any subsequent blunders? Her "aw shucks/wink wink/smile purdy for the camera" routine was extremely undignified and completely inappropriate for a potential Vice President of the United States. It was embarrassing to watch her stupid little girly ploys. Did she not know the difference between a beauty pageant and a political debate? She claims she doesn't want to be treated any differently because she's a woman yet last night she played several flirty woman cards. Does she think that will work with the leaders of some of the countries where women are considered as nothing? God help this country if her ticket wins.
What REALLY pisses me off about this woman is that exactly. Bitch needs to answer the questions she's been asked. We need somebody that is direct to run this country. Last night, she said something along the lines of: "I'm going to tell the people straight up…that I believe marriage should be between a man and a woman…" but why doesn't she just "straight up" tell us what she thinks about the issues that were asked? She kept dodging things left and right…and who gives a fuck about Joe six-pack and the hockey moms across America? Sure, they do matter because they're voting for the next president, but she needs to quit with that b.s. and start spittin some truth.
I mean, if McCain becomes President and happens to die in office, I sure as hell don't want this woman running our country. I'd give Hilary over Palin any day.

To not address the question/topic at hand and instead just ramble on about whatever you have on your index cards is absolutely off-the-charts ridiculously wrong. McCain spouted off to Fox News about his opposition to Gwen Ifill, which was a successful tactic because she went totally easy on Sarah Palin in order to emphasize that she's not "biased." I think she would've been a much tougher moderator to both Biden and Palin if there hadn't been a conservative hubbub about her supposed "bias."

I enjoy reading responses to this website becasue it allows me to see what others are thinking. I do worry though that a majority of people on this site are young and followers of trends…Obama being one of them. I went into a trendy "skater" store the other day and saw Obama T-shirts for sale. I understand what people think, I too was young and idealistic once, but then I grew up and began to realize what was really going on in this world…had children and began to pay real taxes on a real job. I can only hope that people will begin to see what Obama really represents….and it is not change.
Re: JustSayin – gwen ifills book has barack obama in the title but the book is about this moment in black politics. she uses interviews with barack obama, colin powell, vernon jordan, jesse jackson, etc. to paint a portrait of african americans in politics. to write a book about black politics and to leave barack obama out of it just because he is a running for president is moronic. also, her book was announced this summer, way before she was picked as moderator. im sure that if it made her appear biased to the debate organizers there would have been an alternate pick.

Facts are they knew and this notion that Gloria Steinem was the first to tell them this bit of news is a load of horsesh*t. How long ago was Ifill chosen? Ifill has discussed this book in print and in interviews and at the end of the day she NEVER cut Palin off even when she drifted off topic unless Palin or Biden was going over time. She said that in reference to the fact that she may not answer the questions in the frame that Joe Biden or the Moderator wants to hear the questions answered…she DID answer all the questions…and she HAD to reference her resume and all she's done, because she hasn't really had that opportunity yet. She kicked Joe Biden's ass in the debate…despite what the media says. She was able to not only answer every question, but had a rebuttle for Joe Biden's attack on McCain. Biden, however, chose to only attack McCain's policies, which she wittingly got him to confirm, that he believed in too (coughcough NO SAME SEX MARRIAGE BELIEFS cougcough, which he openly says he agrees to with Obama, but in fact, he's exceptionally against.) Biden went back on basically everything he said. My favorite is how often he mentioned pulling the troops out of Iraq ASAP, but how "focused they will be on finding Bin Laden and Al-Queda"…um, don't you have to be in Iraq to do that? Are they just sending 10 people over there to find them?
I'm so ready for this election to be over. I just pray the right people for our country get elected…not the people who sound the best.

Re: Smirks – What cracks me up is your assumption that everyone who dislikes Sarah Palin has some axe to grind with her, or disapproves of her because she comes from humble beginnings. I have no axe to grind, rather I want her to be held to the standards that any other VP candidate is held to. Since when are we not allowed to question people credentials??? She is seeking the second highest position in the U.S. government. I want to know that she can do more than wink at a crowd and smile. I want to know that she has the KNOWLEDGE and COMPETENCE required to make tough decisions.

That's awfully presumptious of you and quite disrespectful to women in general. Success is objective. Quite frankly I'm not impressed. I'm speaking strictly about whether or not she's qualified to lead, and thus far I have seen no evidence of that.
This is the same woman who, as govenor of Alaska, passed legislation that makes rape victims to pay for their own rape examination kits!!!
I don't think I'm better than anyone. I do however, have the right to ask questions of anyone running for president and vice president, and it would seem she doen't like answering them.

I am not an elitist but I do know what is considered proper behavior in various settings and situations. Sarah Palin doesn't. Her folksy, down-home behavior was inappropriate and not befitting someone who is running for the office of Vice President of the United States. Had she been running for President of the PTA then her slang and colloquialisms would have been fine.
If I want to sit down and have a chit chat with someone about the state of this country I'll do that with my friends and family. If I want the real facts and answers as to how we can expect to get out of this mess I want to hear that from someone I can trust to have the dignity, knowledge, and wherewithal to get the job done. Sarah Palin clearly demonstrated last night that she has none of those attributes. Senator Biden demonstrated that he does. Because I don't approve of Sarah Palin does that make me jealous of her? Hardly. I, too, have a wonderful sense of humor, am well liked by people who know me, can dance my way around subjects if I'm unfamiliar with them (although I don't because I'm too honest to do so), am down to earth, and I'm pretty decent looking (according to my husband of 29 years anyway!). I simply don't approve of Sarah's lack of experience and the way she tries to fool the American people into thinking otherwise. I, for one, am not fooled.
what a badass… she seriously did so well last night and kept a man who's had experience in washington for over 30 years on his toes. she looked amazing too.

I didn't say "everyone", I said "some". Palin has actually been held to a much higher standard than we typically require of a VP candidate. I would say, ridiculously high. Standards which are more befitting a presidential candidate, in fact. When Bill Clinton was Governor of Arkansas, he needed a great deal of preparation on foreign affairs for his first debate. He was "folksy" in style. Nobody complained about it then. Why? Because he is a liberal. Liberals hold conservative candidates to standards which they don't then apply to their own candidates.

Bill Clinton was just as "folksy" as Palin. I don't recall hearing complaints about it at the time. Palin "winked" a lot… Bill bit his lip coyly in every damn speech he ever gave. Obama adopts black speech patterns to pander to audiences when it suits him, and Hillary puts on a Southern drawl when it suits her. The lack of recognition of those facts by otherwise intelligent people is a complete and utter double standard.
