Who Won the VP Debate?

Overall, it was a good night for both Veep candidates!
Sarah Palin didn't completely eff up and showed us she had some brain cells, post the Katie Couric bafoonary.
Joe Biden didn't go postal and suffer oopsy diarrhea mouth as some political pundits expected.
But, two polls, one conducted by CNN, the other by CBS, declared Joe from Scranton, PA the winner.
In a CNN poll of 611 who watched the debate, sampling error of 4 points, 51% gave the debate to Biden, 36% to the gov from Alaska.
CBS and Knowledge Networks surveyed a 'nationally representative poll' of 473 uncommitted voters to get their immediate reaction to the Veep debates.
Immediate is good cuz that means no talking head or pundit influence, right? Sounds like a gut check to us!
Who won the debate? Biden won the CBS poll with 46% of the vote. Sarah nabbed 21%, but 33% said it was a tie.
Good news for low expectations Sarah.
Overall, her image improved according to CBS's surveyed people.
55% have a better opinion of Palin. 14% say they have a worse opinion and 30 % said their opinion hasn't changed.
Joe also improved his image in the CBS poll. 53% have a better impression of Joe. A far lower percentage than Sarah's average said they have a worse opinion of the Delaware senator at 5%, while 42% said they debate did not change their opinion.
On an interesting note, CBS also asked survey participants to rate the Veep candidates on their knowledge of important issues before AND after the debate.
For the gov, 43% said she was knowledgeable before the debate. After, 66% said she was knowledgeable. Not too shabby.
As for Joe, pre-debate 79% of CBS's people said he was knowledgeable. After the debate? 98% said he was knowledgeable.

On a side note, galup (independent) just now shows the trend back in track, with Obama gaining a point and McCain losing one. 2008 is going to be a really good year. I am throwing a freaking bye bush and republicans party on Nov 4.

Yes, I think she did better than I thought she would, but she couldn't do worse than I expected her to do. She didn't give any real information. She would attack Obama, and then be set straight by Biden. I slapped my forehead so much at her answers last night I nearly gave myself a concussion. What I want to hear is what McCain's plans are for the future, and never once have I heard him or Palin give us that information. But she keeps going on about how the American people want straight talk. The only straight talk I heard was that she's against gay marriage. That's the only thing she was clear about all night.
Loved the fact BOTH candidates are against forcing homosexual marriage against the will of the people - no comment on that one Perez? Vote YES on 8 - take back what 4 tyrant judges STOLE from the American people. Palin was great last night - down to earth, articulate. All you female haters out there WISH you'd had a what she does - suit was flawless, killer heels, she looked amazing.

I loved the debate I thought both sides had their intelligent answers.. I didn't like that Palin deliberately did not answer direct questions asked to her. I didn't like that Biden omitted some important factors in some of his critique of McCain's voting record. I don't see why people can't focus on the issues and the QUALITY of the debate instead of who burned who first and better.
Sarah did "better than expected." Well.. better than expected doesn't mean she blew the world away with her knowledge or qualifications. I was insulted by the winking. Does she think the American people are stupid? Maybe my nephew would be fooled, but really, is our affection so cheaply bought by winks and colloquialisms?
Biden had his weird moments too.. I felt that he was manipulating his body language to make Palin seem dumb, like those patronizing smiles he gave her throughout, and although he gave accurate statistics, he omitted mitigating factors.
That said, I'm still undecided.

All the winking, folksy patronization, and back home bullshit really bothered me. Why do people like to be talked down to like that? It's not comforting, in my opinion, it's obnoxious. Looking straight at the camera was smart, but see-through, and she was so repetitive. She clearly wasn't allowed to vary from the script or take jabs at Obama. Her points were weak or half-truths, and when she didn't like a question, she just didn't answer it. Biden did that every once in a while, but was way more passionate and knowledgeable. He seems competent. He looked kind of scraggy comparatively, but who wouldn't? It doesn't really matter. The fact that Palin couldn't decide between the correct "nuclear" and GW's "nucular" killed me, she kept switching them up. She scares me. She's a pretty package of hyperbole and hatefulness. Spin doesn't make for stable countries.

All the people saying Obama/Biden aren't for gay marriage either. Yeah, that really, really sucks, and it's one of the major issues I'd be voting on if it were involved, but right now it's obviously about getting elected. The vast majority of American's are opposed to gay marriage (crazy backwards traditions), but the young people are much more for it (I believe that it's 21% of the total pop. and 41% of 18-30 or something). They know they can't win if they say they'll push for legalized equal rights, so they say they're for segregation, which is wrong, but necessary to get into office. Do you really not understand the game of politics? It's making as many people as you can believe that you represent what they believe in without offending any of your other supporters. As a consequence, you get a lot of half-truths. Never trust your politicians, but be especially afraid of those who paint a rosy picture.

Biden was terrible! He took 20 minutes to answer a simple question. He didn't even directly answer the question half the time. Palin, however was amazing, like usual. She knew how to answer the questions and didn't take my entire life to anwser them!

My opinion of her didn't change, I already realized by watching the republican convention that she was capable of reciting memorizes facts, phrases, and speeches. It's not impressive, but an improvement over a man who can't even enunciate the simple words on his teleprompter. Anyways, Biden clearly won by actually debating, it was clear she took her preparation seriously, but cramming down memorization for an important event is not knowing. The Vice Presidential candidate should not be someone who needs to learn, who needs a crash course before the exam.

I know what the Republicans are trying to do. They want to minimize government's role in the daily processes by "sub-letting" some of their duties. First of all, they are modelling after other governments who are having success with privatization, but that is not going to happen in the American system. Your culture has a general flavor of arrogance and greed, and when you have too many players abusing their role in a process, then the process will crash. De-regulation is like an "honor system". When the culture of your country is to take whatever you can by theft, or by power, or by manipulation, then a government of an "honor system" cannot succeed. I support that argument by citing the de-regulation of the American financial markets, and the crash that flowed as a result of a failed "honor system".

She didn't even answer to one of the most important issues ~ McCains's intention to de-regulate medical insurance. And not only did she not know what Achilles Heel was, she responded to not knowing by trying to "bluff" her way out of it and just start reciting her resume. That is not cool. It would have been cool if she would have asked for clarification. She is not real and grounded ~ she is robotic and manipulated. Woodent cha just love to know who is really pulling her strings? The only thing more dangerous that de-regulating health insurance, would be a Vice-President who ignores an uncomfortable question by changing the topic.
