People, all this silly awards are not meant to reward great artistic works. They are designed to sell advertisement time. It doesn't matter if an "artist" has not released anything is some time that would make sense to be in some category. But, the fact that they can bring their audience/fans to watch the show, hence increase number of viewers, and as a result demand higher charges to advertisers, that's the main purpose.
Then MTV had the idea bringing the "Icon" award for whatever their excuse was. Who got nominated? Big names that would bring in more viewers.
It's all business people. MTV and anyone else involved in the business doesn't give a rat's ass about the quality of a product (songs) as long as it makes them money.
MTV hasn't made a difference in my life since I was 17-18. Besides, as mentioned by many of you, they don't even play music videos anymore. Even VH1 has joined the MTV format, yes I'm aware they're both owned by Viacom.
MTV sux, but their award shows are usually amusing.

MTV plays music videos????????????????? Not anymore. I'm sure that are a few people out there that remember MTV when it started. Videos… all videos. Every once in a while they had a 'show' on. Now it's the opposite. MTV has become a ratings whore just like the rest of the networks. I can't remember the last time I turned on MTV and actually seen a video.
Just looked at the list of nominees. From what I can gather, a whopping 5 music videos came out in the last year. SNORE

Amy Winehouse deserves to win. Her album "Back to Black" Rocks. Rihanna's song "My Umbrella" is annoying as hell. I don't see how that song got into the top 10.
