As a teacher, I have to agree with parts of this. I am not against gay marriage, but I do not feel it is our responsibility to teach about it in the classroom. I think it is up to the parents to talk with their kids about this, not the school. If it were to come up in my classroom I would definately discuss it, but I do not want to be told that I have to discuss it in my curriculum.
Marriage is marriage and love is love. I'm a Christian and I do not believe that Jesus would hate on gay people like this. If you want to throw around Bible laws you better not be having sex a week before, during, or a week after your period ladies. Even with your husband. If someone wants to say a same sex relationship is against the Bible, then they better not be having pre-marital hetero sex … or any type of pre-marital sexual behaviour. Tell that to all of the Christian "virgins" who take in in the bum and blow people to "stay pure". Yes people Jesus doesn't care if you suck dick as long as your a girl! Seriously?? I do not think anyone who actually tries to emulate Jesus could believe that. There is nothing "sexually immoral" about having sex with someone you care about, gay or straight.

That being said … it is just as hateful to say mean remarks about religion as it is about sexual preference, race, or anything else that defines a person. You do not make yourself look like an open-minded person by saying to "get rid of religious people" or other things like that. Every one has the right to choose what they believe, one of the great things about living in a democracy!
As far as school goes, I don't think I learned about marriage or anything like that in early elementary school. If they're going to teach it, obviously they should teach all forms of marriage but don't just bring up gay marriage to be politically correct. This commercial is obviously horrible and perpetuates prejudices - but it makes it seem like elementary schools have lessons on marriage, and atleast in MA (come get married here!
) that isn't the case.

I grew up with a lesbian mother. I a now a successful 25 year old with an education that helped me see hoe people ignorance of not wanting to "see" gays in the action of love. What those people are really offended by is people acting out the love for each other, no matter what anyone has to say. My kid asked me does Gay mean happy or that boys like boys. I said that the word means happy and the term can describe when a girl likes a girl or boys like boys.
They can handle it. It isn't going to make your child gay to have understanding. What if my child is gay? I would rather them feel good about themselves and not think they are a bad person.

Civil unions are not the same as marriage. To those of you who say ”I accept homosexuality but I do not want them to get married”, I must ask this: ”Do you also say I accept black people but I would not let them work in my business”? It is the same thing. I do respect your right of religion if it is your cause for being against gay marriage. That is entirely your right. However, you have to accept that religion and state are two separate entities and that marriage is not quite religious. It can be but it does not have to be. I also find it a bit odd that certain of the words of God are respected to the letter while MANY others are not. Also, children should learn the basics of sex. Too many of them have to learn it via the medias and I find that extremely sad. Children are not as naive as some of you make them sound.

Marriage is not an institution that should be ruled by government, church, or schools. It is a relationship that should be created and nurtured by people! Whomever they are!! My children have been exposed to all sorts of relationships their entire lives and so they see it as just another way to live. They are balanced, accepting kids that will grow up so much wiser than most of the adults in this world today.
If we allow the government to tell us who we can love, what cant they do? Where does it stop?

yeah if i had children [and when i do have them in the future] i would want them to learn this. i would want them to be raised by myself and by society to not be judgemental, shallow, narrow minded individuals. i want them to accept everyone for thier differences and not hate people just because they are being who they are. is that wrong? i don't think so. sheltering your kids from reality is more damaging than however damaging you might think homosexuality is. and for the record, learning about homosexuality doesn't make you gay.
OMG! Whats wrong with school systems????????? They shouldn't be teaching 2nd graders that boys can be with each other!! I believe that people were never born gay, they were made into it, by sick relationships. Now in school????? They will be telling boys, "hey, its ok to kiss him", "yes, its ok to be with him." WTF??? First of all they are too young to be learning about being with each other and second of all we and the government is forcing this to be endure by the little kids. We as the tax payers already pay for a majority of how america is ran, but now we are paying for kids to learn these things?? Do they not have enough to learn about? What are they going to do, take out a reading classes to focus on gay marriages. or take out math class and study the nature upon boys with boys? How about the 2nd graders watch a video every now and then about guys f*cking each other?? When teachers are teaching about marriage, that is basically what their going to learn. Thats f*cked up! I think schools need to concentrate on the 3 R's , not who can marry who or who can sleep with who- Sex education usually starts in the 5th grade and sexual orientation can be covered then but it certainly doesn't need to be addressed any sooner in our public schools- they have enough to handle without teaching topics covered in sociology.
I would not want my child ( I actually have one- so don't need advice from those who don't) learning about marrying anyone in the 2nd grade. They are children and have their whole life to worry about partnering up-
Childhood is the time of sandboxes,barbies, legos and finger paints- not sexual orientation.
Anyone who would want to saddle a childhood unnecessarily with such adult topics really needs to look at their motives.

All research proves that homosexuality is not learned nor does one become homosexual due to not having a father figure around or due to a bad relationship with the opposite sex. Sexual identity is not learned. If it were the case, there would be either much more or much less homosexuals. Heterosexuality is not learned. It is the same for all other sexual orientations. It is alright to have your own opinion but one must adjust their views when all scientific evidence to date disproves them. (Note: science did not prove why certain people are gay and others not-however, the factors that you named were disproved as being the cause to any effect on sexual orientation). Also, thinking that homosexuality is the cause of a ”sick”relationship means that homosexuality is a condition and a disease. The DSM-IV disagrees with this.
I AM GAY! I thought the add was really corny. I think tollerance of anyone should be taught. Tollerance and love of color, orientaion, religion, political party ect. I don't think it is necessary to teach young children all about the gay lifestyle. Just tollerance of people in general. I am GAY! And while I feel tollerance and love of everyone should be taught, I think the kids will figure out the rest when they are old enough to deal with such subject matter. I am gay and I don't support gay marriage. I do support equal rights for all.

i know that at 2nd grade i do not want my son or daughter being confused and trying to figure out which gender they like! to be gay is okay and i will teach my children that, but they do NOT need to be taught that in school! that is the job of the parents. they have other things they need to be learning in the SECOND GRADE!!!!!!!

Ok, gays might have been born with this thought but I know that some were not, I do not believe that God, the one who created us, had plans to make us attracted to the same sex. It is clearly stated in the Holy Bible, The Quran, and mabey even other religous books, that marriage is not allowed with THE same sex, and that it is very wrong for boys to mess around with other boys. So for our school systems to go against the sudents religion and their parents religion is wrong. Students are their to learn about 2+2 and how to read,write, develop skills in science and history. This gay topic should not be in schools, it should be at home with the parents, that should be the parents choice to teach them, not the governments. And I did not say anything about homosexuality being a disease, but if you want to say it does not-Males with Males causes Aids, which is a disease, and when a Female and a Male are with each other (and only with each other) and no one else, it does not cause Aids. Because that is the way it should be- One female with one male. Having to odds together creates a disease, having an even doesn't. That is how it is suppose to be, so when God created us, he did not give us the behavior to like the same sex, he did not want the same sex to be with each other. as a mom im so mad! the commercial makes it seem as if parents were all close minded and that it isnt right that kids know about the options they have maybe there woulnt be so many suicides or closed minded parents if other ppl showed its ok to love who ever you whant, also they make it seem that the gilr will turn lesbian just because she leared that she has a right to marry a girl if she wants, that commercial is homopobe scaring ppl ito thinking that ppl can turn into one instead of being born as one.

wow. Do you know that kids in fifth grade are already having sex. We need to start sexual and relationship education in kindergarten! What is okay what is not okay ( in means of what is appropriate touching ect.), and how people in all relationships need to treat each other with respect and care. Do you really think they are showing pornos of gays in sex ed to 2nd graders, no. I myself, am a trained school sexual education teacher in Oregon. And I know that the curriculum for second graders is based around good touch vs. bad touch, and respect towards relationships. Look up what you are talking about before you spew lies.

Parents do not teach their children about sex or gender this is why the education systems have been taking up sex education since the 60's. Because parents ( like you) who spread their own prejudices to their children, instead of letting their children making up their own mind about what is moral vs. immoral. First off.. I don't know if this has been said.. but Gay Marriage has nothing to do with what they teach in school. Some Board of Education would have to decide to teach kids about it, and no one has decided to do that. This is all a trick to scare people into voting yes. If education is what they were really concerned about then they should save their money, and fight to keep it out of schools.
I think some sort of education at some point is needed as the suicide rate for gay teenagers is very high in this country.

Schools, especially within elementary aged children, should not be teaching children about marriage, regardless of whether it is same sex or not.
And although I support gay marriage, I don't think it should be forced upon children (nor do I think marraige in general should be). Children are socialized. If they see a man and man together, then they will want to be that way. Or vise versus in regards to lesbianism. In reality, if we are teaching children at such a young age about marriage, we are giving them no choice. We should instead let them figure this out by themselves as they become older. Right now they should be playing in their sandboxes and riding bikes, making friends, and figuring things out by themselves.

My children, 4, 6, and 8 are not going to magically become gay or start, I don't know, robbing banks or stop going to church because they have been taught some people are gay and some people are straight. Re: coolpinksky – I have studied the bible in theology classes during my B.A and nowhere in the Bible is same gender marriage prohibited, or even mentioned, for that matter. In order to argue that the Bible prohibits civil recognition of same gender relationships, one is reduced to arguing from silence. The definition of marriage which we ”understand” from the bible has evolved many times over the years.
Also, HIV and AIDS does not come from gay men. The HIV virus comes from the SIV virus which was found in monkeys. Most of those who have HIV or AIDS are actually heterosexual women.
Finally, if God did indeed create us (note that I will not even argue evolution here), then he created us all in his image. Would that not mean that God is a little bit gay himself? Either that or he screwed up big time. Then again, isn't he perfect? Food for thought.
