I consider that what I am hearing is coming from another fallible human and act on what I feel is important. I think that if you are a christian, especially at this time, there are much much bigger issues on a global scale. Condoning genocide, starvation, and environmental ruin while seeking reasons to persecute people because of their sexual preferences is not morally correct. Hey, if you're a christian with extra time and money on your hands, I've got plenty of good ideas. This isn't one of them. Please get some priorities.
Let's all vote "NO" on Prop 8 to piss off the Mormons. I'm an ex-Mormon and gay rights supporter, and the Mormon church is fucked up big time. But there are some nice pro-gay rights Mormons.

Keep in mind that supporting Gay Marriage, also means that they would be entitled to marital benefits, including State spousal death benefits.

Governments systematically roll-over into the next generation. What that means is that marriages generally pro-create, so that when they become aged, their offspring will be contributing to the tax base that their aging parents will be drawing on in the form of social security benefits and advanced medical expenses. Gay marriage will not result in pro-creating, so they will not have offspring contributing to the future tax base. Certainly, unmarried gay people will also be drawing on that system in their advanced years, but gay marriage would allow them to draw "more money" from spousal death benefits, etc., than an unmarried gay would. Spousal benefits would then fall on the taxpayers to augment, therefore, taxpayers should have a say in the distribution of their tax base. And don't tell me that gay people can adopt children, because that is not the same as pro-creating, since contributions by adopted children in their future employment would offset the benefit drain by their own natural parents, numerically-speaking.

ALRIGHT you people! Way to go…YES!!! If we all vote NO on Prop #8, that will tell the state of California and organized religion (Mormon et. all) to leave gays alone. When I was younger, I thought religion was about love and tolerance and accepting everyone as equal. I'm now exceedingly cynical of "bible thumpers" with their zealous, evangelical dogma and bullheaded credos regarding "right vs. wrong". Perhaps if enough citizens of our Golden State vote Prop #8 down, it'll sent a message to the religious zealots across the nation. Peace & Love.
I don't think that it is fair to say that just because someone's religious views are contrary to yours that you call it "hate." Hate is a very strong word. The LDS (Mormon) Church holds marriage in the highest sanctity because of the powers of procreation and being able to bring other human beings into this world. There is nothing wrong with that. But because of the sacredness of child-bearing within marriage, they have the strong belief that marriage should be between a man and woman. Classifying this as hate is wrong and extremely detrimental to the members of the LDS church. Plus, if you read and understand the article, they aren't making mass phone calls to every one in California. They are asking church members to contact friends and family to remind them about the issue. Its not about denying love for another person. Its about the members of this church having a deep reverent religious view about marriage. That is not hate. Shame on all of you. No one here is any better for trying to come up with reasons on why Mormons are so horrible. Talk about hate… Grow up.

But really guys, don't be hating on 'Mormons' like they all have the same beliefs. We can see on this forum how that is never the case. It's just as ridiculous as saying fundamental baptists represent the beliefs of the Christian majority, or terrorists represent Muslims the world over.
I do have a question, however, for the Morman posters who agree with Prop 8 - I have often had conversations with Morman friends and acquaintances around what their issue with gay relationships (forgetting the marriage question for a second) is. One thing that I always get stuck on is the idea of sex being about creation of life. What does that mean for sterile hetero-sexuals? I'm curious as to your thoughts…
It isn't a matter of having equality for everyone, to me it is a matter of freedom of religion for all. If this proposition doesn't pass, ministers who don't agree with gay marriage will be forced to to perform them in order to keep their licenses … some may even be sued, for refusing to perform gay marriages (as has already done). If this bill doesn't pass, how long will it be before the the government forces my children to be taught things about gay marriage that don't line up with my beliefs? It has nothing to do with hate — we love all people but in America, the freedom of religion is one of our most sacred rights and if this proposition doesn't pass, some of that freedom will be eroded in California.
If being homosexual is a choice, that means heterosexuality is a choice. So I have a question for ALL of you who believe homosexuality is a choice and not the way a person is born. At what age did YOU CHOOSE to be a heterosexual???? Tell me, did one day after school you sat down at the dinne table and discussed who you SHOULD be attracted to? Just so you know…I am a Mormon, however I think I'm the only one on the face of the planet that does not care if Gay marriage is legal. Seriously though? I think people are afraid of change and that's why they "don't like it" no, our church doesn't support it as a group, but neither do a lot of other religions. I solely believe that a religion should be a backbone for YOUR choices and not everyone else's, so why try to control what everyone else can or cannot do. If the gays want to get married then let them get married!

No one has the right to tell someone how to define that union. BUT, the bottom line is that marriagee is NOT A CHRISTIAN MONOPOLY!!! Someone, very rightfully, said earlier in support of a Yes vote on Prop 8 that gay couples should be happy with a 'civil union', which is really what a marriage is. It's not about hate at all. Both Barack Obama & Biden are for "traditional marriage". I don't hate anyone who is gay, I just feel that it will have long term affect in ways that people don't realize. School children will be taught about same-sex marriage & sex in sex ed classes. Religions who believe homosexuality is morally wrong will be viewed as discrimitory & forced to accept it. It will have LONG TERM effects. I don't want my children being taught about something & growing up thinking it is okay, when I believe it is morally wrong. I don't hate homosexuals, I just don't agree with the lifestyle.

Your motivations are religious-based, while you do have free speech, religion should not be used to take away gay peoples' right to marry. I'm an ex-Mormon thank goodness. The religion is fucked up and backwards, and the people are extremely self-rightious and judgemental morons. Unfortunately my mom's side of the family is Mormon, and if prop 8 passes, I'm not going to associate with them any more as a form of protest. Out of only 770,000 Mormons in California, they've donated 40% of the money to "protect marriage ."

Perez Hon, Um… THIS IS AMERICA - and it's like a democracy. There is thing called MAJORITY rules (as opposed as two four tyrant judges) and why is HATE associated with letting the PEOPLE VOTE? If you and the homosexual agenda are so confident that two sodomizing men/women are so great - maybe you can convince the state of this and the people will speak. I will say this. I am supremely pissed off at the way the radical homosexuals went about it. Complain, sue, complain, file a lawsuit, sue some more. WE ARE Flippin' SICK OF IT. OK. All you homos/lezbos - Screw your house plant for all we care - just don't go around calling it marriage - and don't kid yourselves it's not going to add more marital chaos and discourse to a already weak institution. Don't lie and say it's a civil right - cause it's not. States have the right to regulate just about anything - including marriage. Yeah, we got both our ballots, and we'll be voting YES on 8. It's called DEMOCRACY in action.
This kind of shit makes me ashamed that I grew up in the Mormon faith. This is one of the many reasons I decided to leave the church. I've had countless arguments with my mother about it, and I don't even attempt to talk to my grandmother about it. I've been phone banking relentlessly in Sacramento!

Am I being blasphemous if I CHOOSE not to have a family? And what about the fact that the symbols associated with religious marriage services are all direct rip-offs of sacred pagan rituals?
I just do not believe that the changes made to include gay citizens will result in your children being taught that it's wrong to believe in different values. They spouted similar bilge about de-segregation. Such crap. And ultimately, the mental and spiritual education of children rest solely with their parents. If you don't like the inclusive, explorative curriculum this might lead to, send your kids to a charter school. Send your kid to a religious school. Home school. Just get over it.

Not sure what this is about really as I just started following this blog! But I'm all for Gay marriage! I'm a proud lesbo! And I would love for it to be legal in Ohio where I am from but that may NEVER happen!!! UGH!!!
As a church going Mormon I am utterly appalled at the action my church has taken. My whole life they have said that we want you to vote the way you feel best and it is our policy to not get involved in picking candidates. While I do not consider myself as a homosexual, I support them. I feel that people who love each other should have the privilage of getting married and getting the added benefits that go with it. I think the way the church has handled homosexuals in general is not as they would say, "Very Christ-like". I makes me so angry.
So I guess that is all for now. And if you wanted to know, I am a democrat, I am voting for Obama and my all time favorite celebrity is Rosie O'Donnell. I hope that you can see we are not all assholes and do have some common sense.

and is not hate, Prop 8 deals with things that in turn will affect the seperation of church and state. Religious organizations have the right to choose whether they want to allow/assist same sex couples to adopt or get married, with out being sued for discrimination.
It comes down to seperate moral beliefs….and I choose to keep my freedoms of religion.
I am a Mormon- not exactly "devout," but I do love the church with all my heart, & always will. However, I don't agree with every single thing about the church- especially this. I am all for gay rights; I have many close friends who are gay, & they deserve to be as happy as anyone else. So if marriage is what will bring them their happiness, they should be able to get married! I would like to say, though, that I truly don't believe that the LDS church is doing this out of hate. Is it the best move for the church to make? In my opinion, definitely not. But obviously, many LDS people believe that it is, and honestly, it's only being done for the sake of standing up for something that the church believes very strongly in, which is that marriage should be between a man & a woman. Many people feel that this is a way to defend that belief, but when it comes down to it, it is not being done out of hate. Many LDS people feel that they are simply fighting to protect something that they believe very strongly in. I obviously don't agree with the church's views on homosexuality, & believe it or not- not ALL of us Mormons do. All I know is, God DOES equal love, He created every person as they truly are, & He loves every person FOR exactly who they are. And whether gay or straight, everyone deserves the chance to be happy. And to love. So let's focus more on the love, eh? I don't know; it works for me. = )

We need to spend our energy overcoming hate in this world…not love. With a divorce rate as high as it is how can anyone believe marriage is sacred.? If people did truly believe that, wouldn't we stick to our vows? I know more long term gay couples than straight ones… because once they find real acceptance and love they hang on to it…even if there isn't a legal document holding them to it….thats love…and THAT should be honored , not by religion..but by government and the general human race. There are many claims on here by gay marriage supporters that the folks that don't support it have the attitude that their way is the ONLY way. Take a look in the mirror. We see marriage as a sacred thing between a man and a woman, but guess what? So does every Christian faith out there, so to single out Mormons is a bit ridiculous. Apparently you missed the point. The LDS church does not want a change in civil rights including civil unions, but the definition of marriage….that's all. The church takes no issue with insurance, tax benefits, medical decisions and so forth by a civil united couple regardless of orientation including homosexual. If you don't believe in the forced action, see the Charlene Hastings case in which a transsexual is suing a catholic hospital for refusing to insert breast implants. Apparently Catholic hospitals and employees should be forced to disobey their religious beliefs, which is precisely the complaint the Mormon church presents.
It is especially of importance given the severe persecution the Mormons experienced, including murder, for practicing a non-standard form of marriage…polygamy which should also NOT have been determined by the government instead left to churches and individuals to decide. Ah, but you would rather not focus on the truth instead fueling hatred and truth so twisted it becomes a lie.
Oh, and I'm not Mormon. I just bother to gather the facts, all of them. Again see the name Charlene Hastings in the news. This transsexual is suing a Catholic hospital in an attempt to force people to do what they religiously oppose. Clearly it should have been apparent from the onset that such a hospital would not perform this surgery just as that same hospital would not perform an abortion.
