Re: chelle – You do yourself a disservice when you only read church-approved materials. Do research on real history. He did marry a 14-year-old girl. The church later sanitized this and changed it into something it wasn't. What it really was? Having sex with a minor.

The problem is that you don't really understand the mormon religion. Beign sealed to someone doesn't mean any marriage has been consummated. Joseph Smith was sealed to many men. Those men chose to be sealed as sons regardless of their age. With all those claims of Joseph Smith marrying and having sex with so many many women, where is the DNA of his offspring? Oh yeah, another one was just proven NOT to be biologically his child. Again, being sealed does not mean a marriage that is consummated, especially when the marriage might have been for eternity and not time.
I think Jesus would support Gay Marriage. lol
Re: Dabid – I do understand because I am an ex-Mormon. It's fine if you want to believe. And if it helps you live a better life I don't want to ruin it for you. But if you ever want to know real history, do some research. Ex-mormon.org is a great site, but only go there knowing you'll find out a lot of things you may not want to hear. First off I am glad that you did not say all. I am Mormon and I support gay marriage. I also support equal rights for all people. As a matter of fact, I live in Utah and almost everyone I know supports gay marriage. There are good and bad in every religion and unfortunately people that cannot understand that although you may not understand or agree with something it doesn't make it wrong. But you are right some Mormons DO SUCK and not just when it comes to gay marriage.

Uh you forgot to mention the Catholics and Evangelicals also are supporting banning marriage- if you're going to bash a religion, give them ALL the attention they deserve.
Equal rights is equal rights. Vote no on 8. Our kids will be fine. Those that are gay will grow up knowing they are normal, and those that are not gay will not become gay "just cuz". It's not contagious y'know. It's not a choice. Sexual orientation is normalcy.

Have any of you ever been personally attacked by a mormon, or treated as sub-human? Have you ever been called names, or have they personally attacked your beliefs by dredging up so called "scandals"? I doubt it. Mormons are always loving, classy, and kind. That's more Christlike than anything else I see.
This vote is important, everyone should be informed and make an opinion. Just because we don't have the same opinions doesn't mean we need to stoop to violence (aka cyber-bullying).

This is bull! If states are supposed to decide for themselves whether gay marriage should be legal, how can they with constant interference from people outside their state! Anyone who is not a citizen should not be able to actively campaign for or against this initiative. It is not a national vote, it is a state vote.

I happen to be a Mormon. I happen to disagree with their stance on gay marriage. I happen to live in utah. I also believe God=love. I have no right to judge anyone when I am totally imperfect myself. God knows our hearts, and our thoughts, and only he can judge us.
One of my oldest and dearest friends is gay. He still considers himself Mormon, even though he can't marry in our Temples. My heart aches for him.
If everyone could take a deep breath, and quit the name calling and mud slinging long enough to see we are all human, all in need of love and respect, then the world would be a truly better place to live. I coud go on about how you all have your facts wrong in regards to mormonism, but I could just be contributing to the chaos. ( I will say my husband has only 1 wife, and that's me….he couldn't handle more than one of me:)

Mormons are the MOST GENEROUS when it comes to giving. In the last 20 years the LDS church has donated over $250 million to non-LDS charities. Also, it has provided over $750 million in material goods of humanitarian aid to 165 countries including assistance following 185 natural disasters. I am an Episcopalian but the kindest, most unselfish, happiest people I have met are not in my church — they are Mormons.
Gay people aren't harming anyone by getting married. Why should anyone take that right away from them. It's not about people having their right to an opinion, that's fine. The problem is when you try to ban people from doing something that won't harm you in any way except for the fact that you selfish pricks can't accept it and don't want to see it. That's not freedom of speech, that's what oyuo call trying to control people's lives. That's illegal. Too bad, sounds personal. Get over it. THe day will come. Gays will marry!

The fact of the matter is, ya'll, the government doesn't get to decide what marriage is, cause then they get to define what a family is. Once that happens, all of the VALUES that this country was based on go out the window, and for whoever said it, this country WASN'T based on a religion, but it WAS based on Christian principles. Go back and read the Federal Papers, that proves it. Read the journals of the Founding Fathers who were there when they wrote the Constitution. They ALL believed that God's hand was in the founding of this country, and that it was based on CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES! It can't be refuted by anyone, if they try, then they're just being irrational and stupid. I promise you that it WILL happen. One day, we will ALL know the truth, and the truth is that marriage is meant to be between man and woman. Also, you people that are trying to rationalize the Bible away as imperfect, or tell us what Jesus thinks of us, you're stupid, grow up and apply just a MODICUM of logic, and you will see that's not the case, and you have NO idea what Jesus thinks.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I was raised Mormon, and I honestly can't believe they're going to such lengths to try to ban gay marriage. It's a church, not a legislative body. Stay out of it!
It's hard for me to wrap my head around people caring that much and being so against same-sex marriage that they'll go out of their way to convince people to vote no on prop 8. My dad, he's a hardcore Christian, and I came across a letter he printed addressed to our local political rep (whatever the eff you call it) and he voiced his opinion saying marriage should be between a man and a woman.
Seriously? Do you care THAT much? I really could care less if gay people marry. Why do some heteros get their panties in a bunch over it? Does it really affect them? I'm definitely pro gay marriage and I'm not even gay. I just don't understand why some straight people are so dumb about it.

You make a good point, Neteret, marriage has been made a mockery by the hetero couples. Isn't there something like a 60% divorce rate in America? What about those drive-through wedding chapels in Vegas, is that really taking it seriously? And really, who's to say who would make a better marriage? A straight couple or a gay couple? Who's judgement call is that? We certainly have no right to judge other people's lifestyles. It's not hurting anyone, so why do people care? Let them lead their lives how they want.

I was in school one day an a girl sitting at my table who is Mormon thought nothing of saying N**** in front of my best friend who is black. And no one said anything… til I told her that was very "Mormon" of her and everyone but her boyfriend who is also "Mormon" left the table. You may not see it, or you may even be numb to it if its around you. But dont think your religion or any other religion for that matter is superior. A chic on one of these blogs had a saying on her post that said it best… "the people who carry the biggest bibles never open them or don't understand them". And you cant say they do, cause if they did they would know it doesn't promote hate or name calling or going against people who believe in what you don't. But I know I don't need a bible telling me what's right from wrong.
