McCarthy "Cures" Autism, Reaches Out to McCain

Filed under: Jim Carrey > Jenny McCarthy > John McCain

mccarth.jpg

In an Us Weekly interview that may garner her more than just a little controversy, Jenny McCarthy claims to have treated her son's autism, ridding him of the disorder.

In a move that had the American Academy of Pediatrics pulling their hair, Jenny blames the MMR vaccine that kids receive to immunize them against measles, mumps and rubella for her son's Autism diagnosis. Prior to the vaccination, she says 6-year-old Evan was attentive and affectionate. She says that after the vaccine Evan fell into himself.

It wasn't until after a strict wheat and dairy-free diet that Evan seemed to come out of his spell. While watching an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, Evan responded with laughter, sending his mother into ecstasy.

Jenny has been a rather outspoken advocate of autism awareness and penned several books. Her methods have come under criticism from doctors for fanning paranoid flames in parents.

McCarthy even tried reaching out to Republican Presidential nominee John McCain, overseeing her own political position to connect with the candidate who has likewise spoken out about a correlation between vaccines and autism. But, even after an urgent helicopter flight for an on-screen interview with the senator, the actress was flatly denied because, as his campaign manager said, "He's ahead in the polls, and this is too controversial, and he doesn't want to go one way or the next."

Lame!

Exactly the same thing happened to my son, for the same reason.
Eventually it was discovered that he had a violent allergic reaction to the Triple Antigen, which damaged his brain chemistry / physiology.
It took him many years to recover and he still suffers bouts of dissociative behavior, anxiety and depression.
He is intellectually and creatively gifted. A musician/poet/writer/artist with a loving, caring nature, great courage and empathy.
This is not a light matter for any parent, nor for a child to have to endure.
Jenny McCarthy is to be commended for her courage and her love for her son.

…as McCain's campaign manager said, "He's ahead in the polls, and this is too controversial, and he doesn't want to go one way or the next."

Yeah, America needs another self-serving, self-involved President. You have some nerve expecting the candidates to talk about the issues concerning Americans.

    Re: wanna milk me??

i see your stupid comments everywhere… don't you have anything better to do?

  4. 104

Yipee, snaggletooth Jenny cured her son. I didn't know she was an actress AND a doctor!! Wow!!!!!!

  5. 105

i am voting for obama, but i agree with mccain on this one.
as a special educator, and someone who loves kids with autism…it is giving parents false hope to say their child can be "cured" autism is not a disease to be cured, it can be treated, with therapies that have support of sound evidence, and can be replicated. although GFCF diet may work for some parents, most of the time it doesnt. and most of the time, the parents are seeking all types of other therapies, 20 hours of special educatation in the home, speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education hours in pulbic school, etc…so who is to say it is just the diet.

jenny fails to mention the thousands of dollars she paid per week to help her high functioning verbal son with autism receive early intervention. what about all other 75% of children with autism who are mentally retarded, and 50% perecent are nonverbal, and most dont have tons of $$ for private therapy.

it just sends the wrong message to families.

    Re: brookielyn

When you mix Sam-E with other suppliments it does have an effect. My mom has her BSN and she discussed this with a doctor before she did it.

  7. 107

    JENNY McCARTHY FUCKING ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love celebs that call people out on their shady ways.
More power TO her–I hope she exposes the truth and people listen.

  8. 108

I don't think she "cured" him of his autism, but might have been "coming out of it." As for the McCain thing, John–FIRE YOUR CAMPAIGN MANAGER!!! He's the douche, NOT McCain.

  9. 109

    Re: wanna milk me??

I completely agree, you are an idiot just like every other celebrity that thinks they know anything about politics. I love you, but i am tired of reading your single minded opinions dude.

  10. 110

so if a vaccine caused it (which is utter bullshit), how did she cure it? suck out the vaccine years later? she needs to keep her mouth shut and just take off her shirt. this is absolutely ridiculous.

  11. 111

vaccines do cause autism. it has been proved over and over again. you guys are idiots. as far as curing autism…..anyone who thinks they can do that might be autistic.

I am actually happy that Jenny didn't speak with John McCain or anyone in politics. I received my degree in Applied Behavioral Science focusing in early intervention with children with autism. I have been involved with families and kiddos for around 7 yrs. I am not an expert, but I have spent hrs and hrs educating kiddos with autism. In all of my studies at University I have never found any piece of research that proves that the MMR vacine causes autism. Although Jenny has brought much needed attention to families and children living with autism, she is TOTALLY wrong on this one. I have had the joy of working with many children with autism, and have never met one that have been supposedly "cured". I have heard of and array of diets that try help with inappropriate behavior, self-stimulatory behaviors, and sleeping. With early intervention, correct diet, positive environments, consistent routines children with autism do have a better chance at living a "typical" life. Also I have met numerous parents that said, "But drew was developing fine until the age of two and slowing he just started to lose all communication skills and so on". There are so many things that still need to researched in the field of autism. I wish Jenny would stop giving a bit of false hopes for parents.

  14. 114

Re: Jam327 – I'd love to read the research that proves that vaccines cause autism. Please share. You have to be aware of all the crap out there that gets published. If it's not in a peer reviewed medical journal, it can't be taken seriously. It drives me CRAZY with how much BS is out there that people will just take at face value. I can't believe that some of these comments claim that doctors are not constantly researching this and devoting careers to learning more about causes and treatments.

  15. 115

    autism cured??!!

  16. 116

Re: Picklepie – your the one who hasn't done research, those diseases are dibilitating and deadly! To say most of the diseases they give these vaccines for are not that bad shows your ignorance to the facts.

  17. 117

I have watched her speak about autism and she nevers says she "cured" him. She compares autism to being 'hit by a bus. You are never cured from being hit, but you can recover.' I applaude her for speaking out and trying to help others and I hope her son, and other children affected with autism, fully recover.

  18. 118

Re: Jam327 – not it hasn't been proven. Where did you read this? That study a few years back was proven to be very flawed and was therefore rebuked unfortunately. My best friends sister has two children. Her 1st son became autistic & she was convinced it was vaccines. So when her second child, her daughter was born she opted against vaccines, but sadly her daughter also developed the condition. I agree that reasearch needs to be done. It could be something the mother does during pregnancy or even before, maybe not having enough folic acid which is been proven to be CRUCIAL in early development. Who knows what causes it. All I know is me and my sister were vaccinated and Ive vaccinated my son. With the recent outbreak of measles b/c of mothers relying on "herd immunity" is quite scary. I personally will listen to my pediatrician since she will do what she thinks is in my sons best interest and well being.

  19. 119

Re: Cristi – what the fuck? explain your reasons behind voting mccain, and why you make those attacks on obama . please.

  20. 120

Obama wouldn't have met with her either - he's distanced himself from any person & organization that's controversial - Jeramiah Wright, Bill Ayers, ACORN, etc. Also, if you listen to any of Jenny's interviews, she admits her son will never be completely rid of autism, but the signs have decreased to the point where the medical industry does not recognize his autism anymore b/c it doesn't meet the criteria - which is wonderful!!! She is awesome & inspiring to many parents. Kid's diets DO matter - even if your child doesn't have autism - don't feed them all that sugar, high fructose corn syrup artificial flavors & dyes - it does nothing but harm growing children's brains (and adults!!)

  21. 121

SHE never said they cured her sons autism, she says recover, you can't cure a car crash but you can recover from it!~ BE informed, Paris the headline should be changed on this…….. it is misleading
check out TACA.com for more info, this is too important to joke about, these are families lives , the diet has helped my children immensely

  22. 122

OMG so many are so ignorant, she doesn't say the vaccines were the only cause, they were the catalyst, like overfilling a bucket her son had stomach and other health issues, and the vaccines sent him over the top. Autism cannot be sured but children can recover, she is advocating a slower schedule and greener vaccines without so many toxins. I applaud her speaking out to help children!~

  23. 123

    Re: Bellezza Italiana

the doctor has your sons best interest at heart hmmmmm look around the office, who did he get his pens, note pads, book shelves look around, pharmaceutical companies!~

  24. 124

    Nice.

  25. 125

Way to play into politics, Perez. Of course you had to.

  26. 126

Obama wouldn't have met with her either…. they are BOTH so afraid of losing votes its ridiculous! And its not that she even "cured" it… she found out what worked for her child! Many parents with Autistic (or even other illnesses) children are so quick to believe these doctors when they tell them that they will just have to live with it that they just accept it and don't even try to learn about it themselves. Good for her!!! She was active and didn't just accept some bullshit that the doctors gave her!
    aim= chonie

  27. 127

So is she saying that he has a food alergy and that the vaccine was actually not to blame? Changing a diet would not correct issues caused by a chemical (vaccine in this case) reaction. One or the other (or neither–not both).

  28. 128

I think she has a big heart, but I have been around someone with Autism for years and Autism can't be cuerd with books and love and certain foods,it is true that certain foods are to be taken out of the diet but that alone does not cure it.

  29. 129

Well I'll give her an A for effort, but these vaccines do not cause autism, if they are related in ANY way it would be an allergic reaction but i find even that hard to believe, it is something that a child is born with, people just love to find someone or something to blame instead of just accepting the truth…………….It sounds like he has a pretty mild form, there is a high functioning form aspbergers something like that, a friend of mine has twin boys and both of them have it and they are identical, that there should tell you it's genetic!!!!

  30. 130

THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN VACCINES AND AUTISM!! These celebrity idiots will be the direct cause of many deaths from these childhood diseases. I hope they can live with it, I couldn't.

    Re: Lulustre

In the magazine article (US Weekly) she DOES specify that it doesn't work for EVERYONE but that it's worth a try. I read it because I was sceptical, but I was impressed with her openness that it's not infallible

    Re: ShameAboutRaisins

Her statements were far from blanket–blame that on Perez. She states that what worked for her son may NOT work for everyone. There is an article taken from her book in US Weekly.

If your kid is vaccinated for measles then what are you worried about?

  34. 134

    .
WHEN WAS MCCAIN AHEAD IN THE POLLS ANYWAY!?!? FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES RIGHT AFTER THE CONVENTION… OH WAIT … NOT EVEN THEN!!
    .
JUST ENDORSE OBAMA AND GET YOUR SPREAD EAGLE TWAT SELF ON THE ZOMBIE OBAMA BANDWAGON!
    .
DON'T USE AUTISM AS A SHAM TO ENDORSE THIS PIECE OF CRAP CANDIDATE!!
    .
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR SON IS STRICKEN WITH THE DISEASE!!!

    CHEAP CHEAP HO!

*cough* Sorry, no.. docs don't always 'know best'

  36. 136

    I believe it!!!
I dont trust those vaccines either!!
Hey.. the more cancer & diseases they can spread around the more money they make right???!!! "Cancer Research", job, med's, Dr.'s!! BULLSHIT!!!!!
HOORAY for Jenny sticking up for her sons well being!!!!!!
My hats off to her; shes a great Mom!!!!!!

  37. 137

Re: scadbrookie – There are a lot of "DAN" doctors because they know that parents whose childrens have autism will pay however much money they possibly can to try to help their children. You seem to be ignoring some very important and relevant facts:
    1) there has been no mercury in vaccines (except flu) in the US for several years now, and the autism rate has been increasing. likewise, in countries that they discontinued thimerosal use long before we did the rate of autism diagnoses has also kept increasing.
    2) Studies have also shown that the rate of autism diagnoses is the same in kids who have and have not been vaccinated.
    3) Jenny mcCarthy is a moron who is making dangerous assertions. If her son has actually made significant changes from how he used to be because she changed his diet, he was not truly autistic. Autism cannot be "cured" by diet or anything else, and to assert that it can it very hurtful to millions of families.

  38. 138

    Re: Dixie77
I couldn't have said it better myself!

  39. 139

I think its very naive- autism is very prominent in my family and one of my family members has asperger sysndrome and he was born before the vaccine was even invented. It upsets me when i think of what my mum and my aunty have gone thru bringing up autistic children for someone to then say "well i put them on a strict diet and it went" There isnt a cure for autism my mum has tried all the diets and hes still autistic! Its very patronising to all the mothers who have tried everything to help their autistic children! Her son might not have autism if a diet is suddenly making it dissappear he may just have an intolerance to certain food.

  40. 140

Too bad Jenny McCarthy LIES!! She is going to end up huritng our cause and our children in the end. Although, what does she care, so long as her ego is fed?!?!

  41. 141

Obama WON'T respond to Jenny so who is lame?

And as for diet and autism, unless you are a PARENT and live with that child 24 hours a day, shut up

  42. 142

Jenny has repeatedly tried to meet with Obama and his camp wont' even return her calls. Notice he won't even mention Autism at the debates. Talk about not wanting to mess up the polls.

As far as diet affecting autism, unless you live with a child 24 hours a day, shut up.

If her son is improving–less seizure activity, speaking, and laughing more (for himself), then just be happy for their family.
