Re: repfem – I do not agree with late term abortions as a way of birth control, but we need to think about woman who's babies might be born with severe birth defects, the likes of spina bifida. A journalist wrote about her experience having a late term abortion due to her baby's spine being completely open due to this condition and applying pressure on the brain so badly, if the child did live it would be in a completely incapable of a life without pain and tons of surgeries that would never even begin to repair the defect. She spoke about the awful grief and blame she experienced eventhough she knew this was the best thing to do out of "LOVE" for her unborn child. Woman like that need this service and have a right to it. No one was going to help her financially and emotionally raise this child, therefore they should not have a say in the choice she had to unfortunately make.
I am a christian and a republican (sort of), but I don't believe that the government has the right to regulate who can marry who. I God gives us the choice of how we want to live our lives, makes the government the right to choose for everyone. The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness right. Oh as for Gay marriage during the Republican convention there were actually several gay delegates here known as the Log Cabin Republicans and while they support gay marriage they also stated that even though they were gay they had other issues other then just the gay marriage issue! In fact it was pretty humorous and pretty telling that the guy said in an interview with the Mpls Star Tribune that when he went to the Gay 90's bar there was a comic making fun of Republicans which he said went from being funny to being downright crude so he put his Republican button on and guess what?! They started treating him rudely just because he did not mindlessly follow the "acceptable gay party line". He was also quoted as saying that he made friends with a gay democrat but he would never go out with a guy like that….he doesn't dates guys who hate America! LMAO!! Those were his words, not mine! I'm not sure why a straight couple can get drunk and married in Vegas then quickly divorced soon after, but a gay couple who have committed their lives to each other for years upon years cannot get married. People who are allowed to legally marry in this country are getting divorced in record numbers, and "real" marriage has become something of a joke. Are homosexual-hating politicians just worried that gay marriage will make straight marriage look bad? I'm not sure how else it could be a threat. And maybe my history is off, but the constitution is supposed to GRANT rights, not DENY them. We're all created equal … it says so in some old document somewhere. I'm pretty sure about that.

I totally agree with you. It is not that hard to explain to a 5 year old child that people marry because they love eachother. Plain and simple.
I guess that the real "problem" is the adult minds that tend to automatically gravitate to the sexual aspect of a relationship as opposed to the emotional one. Be it as it may, I'm glad that there are parents that are willing to explain to their children that people who love eachother get married. No need to go into specifics… but I guess some conveniently forget that.
Now, to get back on topic… Candidates from both sides agree that marriage is between a man and a woman. True, however they also point out that it is a PERSONAL belief and that it should be left up to the states. The only one that seems to go a little further is Mrs. Palin. Senator McCain finds that Gov. Palin's position on the matter (constitutional ammendment) is too extreme. I agree. It is perfectly okay to have an opinion on something. The beauty of this country is that you can worship as you will. However, imposing that religious belief on everyone on a Federal level goes against everything that this country was built upon. We find our freedom priceless, and to some level even brag about it. Why write something into the constitution that is driven by religious conviction? This country is a Democracy, NOT a Theocracy.

I don't thinnk many people really read the constitution beyond what they are taught in school. Which is okay, but there is a lot more to it. It's a long read, but really worth it. I know when I studied it, it was a little surprising to learn that the government has gone against it at times… but that is an entirely different (and long) subject.

While I may not agree with someone, and even think they might be a little uninformed, I cannot insult anyone. WHY? There are so many other ways of disagreeing. I don't know why anybody thinks kids will be influenced negatively if gays are allowed to get married. If your kid is gay, they are going to be gay whether gay marriage is legal or not! And believe me, I don't think many people choose to be gay because it seems like fun. Why would anyone choose to have so many people hating them for no reason?? Why would someone choose to have their family and friends possibly cut them off??? Why would someone choose to expose them self to constant ridicule and even violence?? I agree with Ellen and with the right of anyone who wants to get married to do so… I think ultimately you vote for the candidate that will benefit YOU the most… and to me is the Rep. Ticket… Some people are more interested in the economy, gay rights, abortion, etc….But No matter what happens.. the constitution is not going to change… She will never be able to do that!!!

I am a heterosexual Canadian, but I am praying that Obama wins the election. I am terrified for what America would become under the rule of McCain and Palin. Your constitution will be rewritten and trampled on. Women's rights will slip back 60 years. Not to mention the rights of homosexuals! I remember an interview with Sharon Stone at the time Basic Instinct was released, and she said that as far as she is concerned, with so much pain and hatred and evil in the world, love of any kind is a blessing. And I agree. How many of you 'chose' to be heterosexual? So why is it assumed that homosexuals 'chose' to be that way? And why should people be treated differently, discriminated against, for something that is beyond their control and biologically determined? I believe homosexuals should have all the same rights as heterosexuals, because when it comes down to it, love is love.
I voted for McCain/Palin because of their conservative fiduciary views, their desire to close the borders, and their desire to implement drug testing and background checks for welfare recipients to avoid welfare abuses. HOWEVER, I am socially liberal and completely AGAINST Palin's stance against abortion and gay rights. It is nobody's effing business what I do with my body but my own. Whenever a man I know tells me he is AGAINST abortion, I tell him to grow a uterus and THEN come talk to me. Until that happens, ALL men need to shut the hell up about abortion unless it is their baby at issue. And as for gay rights, we are all equal in God's eyes, and if I can get married, why can't my gay friend? You don't choose who you fall in love with, and the government has no right to tell me anything different. Palin needs to pull back from her extreme right wing views as she is losing a lot of support because of it. Extremism in ANY form is bad. Just my opinion. Okay, start yelling at me…
