Homosexuality is observed in the animal world, too, as in it's "natural." "Normal" means "norm" — it just is. A certain percentage of people are gay. Let them be!     Here are some myths that need to be busted because some of you really scare me.

    1) One does not choose to be gay just like one does not choose to be heterosexual.

    2) Civil unions are not the same as marriages because marriages benefit from many legal technicalities

    3) Marriage is NOT a christian tradition. It was there long before that. Your right of religion is your own business but don't mix your faith (which many of us do not share) with the law.

    4) Children do not ”turn” gay because they are exposed to gay people. All psychological research shows that being exposed to gay people only makes children more tolerant which in turn decreases hatred.

    5) Homosexuality and paraphilias are not the same thing. One is between two consenting people of the same age (or of legal age) who love each other and who do not hurt anyone. The other is not.

    6) Denying gays the right to marry will not help your heterosexual families do any better. Divorce and extramarital affairs are sky high at the moment. Concentrate on your own life and let others be.

    i think the purpose of this post was not to imply that the discrimination of proposition 8 is the same extent as segregation during the American civil rights movement, i think what is tying to be communicated is that the prospect is the same.

    i think the message is that denying people, of any of their rights, enhances segregation in america and in the world. in being denied their right to marry, gay people are being excluded of the basic human right of equality.

    how can we all pretend that we are each equal when there is a vast majority of people who are not allowed to marry or adopt children. i think in the 21st century this is truly ridiculous. the problem, and the concern with this proposition, is that people are not viewing it with enough seriousness. to say that it is not on the same level as the severe and disgusting discrimination in America in the 50s and 60s is to some degree a fair comment, however, to display enough ignorance to completely ignore the issue is a real threat to American civil rights and should be a cause for concern.

    I never leave comments on here, but this is just too much. While I believe in equality for everyone, and that all Californians should vote no to proposition 8 this struggle should never be compared to the struggle of the segregation. It is 2 different instances. I can never hide the fact that I'm black when I walk through the door its there, however you really don't know someone is gay until they tell you, you can assume but you never know until that person tells you. I know struggle is tough for equal rights for LGBT community specifically for marriage, but this situation is it's own struggle and should not be compared. For more insight read about James Baldwin, a writer, activist 50s 60s 70s, oh and he happened to be black and gay.

    Wow! So many comments on this page I don't know where to start.

    While I agree that the two have many differences, I think the core ideals are the same. You shouldn't be discriminated against for things that are innate. You cannot help what color you are and contrary to what some people said, you do not "choose" to be gay. You are born that way. I did not choose to be straight. During no part of my life did someone lay the choices out for me, "Okay, you can either be straight, bisexual or homosexual. What's your choice?" All I knew is that I was attracted to boys. It's the same way with bisexual or homosexuals. Only a bible-thumping twit would say that it is a choice. What sensible person would chose to be discriminated against? To have their equal rights denied? That is asinine to even suggest that.

    And to some of you who said that gays aren't abused or mistreated, are seriously mistaken. That's like saying racism doesn't exist anymore. My husband and I live in a pretty conservative town and we just recently went to a protest concerning a young gay man who was beaten within an inch of his life after leaving a bar. The cops didn't thoroughly investigate the case and one of the officers went as far as to suggest that the victim was "asking for it" because of his "flamboyant" personality. I suggest you research gay hate crimes before you say that gays aren't "abused."

    Good point No Patience. Those laws were called miscegnation laws and they did forbid blacks and whites from marrying. How is this different? The Supreme Court decided then that the government doesn't have a right to decide who can and cannot get married. This is the same damn thing.

    Segregation happened because whites thought black people were contaminated and low-class people. This is the same message if Prop 8 passes. It is saying you are contaminated and we will not let you get married because God doesn't approve of you (like any mortal here on Earth could possibly know that) and we're better and our union can be legally/spiritually recognized as a marriage.

    And to those that say racism wasn't based on religion are wrong. Back in the 1600's when slavery was first introduced in America, people justified slavery based on the fact that black in an evil color and they must be the devil's heathens. After slavery was abolished, hate crimes continued and the legal system found loopholes to keep African Americans from having equal rights. The main point I am trying to make is that the whole thing was based on religious beliefs. So religious beliefs don't always lead you in the best direction.

    Whether it's your age, race, sex, or sexual orientation, discrimination (especially that which our government encourages by its legislation) is never okay.
