All you guys who keep saying that segregation can't be compared to gay marriage bans are missing the point.
It's about principle. "Separate but equal" is wrong. Your guys' argument of "you cant compare this to the severity of how African Americans were treated" is like saying, you can't compare a murder of 1 person to a murder of 1000 people. Killing is wrong, regardless of severity. And restricting peoples rights based on prejudice is wrong, regardless of severity.

I am so sick of everyone equating gay rights to the civil rights movement. It is not remotely the same. I actually made a comment to a friend about this last night. What all of this prop 8 stuff reminds me of is how it was not acceptable for whites to marry blacks. Though it is now permissible under the law, people STILL face judgment when in an interracial relationship. It's extremely sad.
The moral argument will continue for years to come. Let's take a step forward and at least stay objective with state constitution and give equal rights to all couples. Discrimination against a group of people is unfair and unnecessary, and does not need to be written into law.

Your guys' argument of "you cant compare this to the severity of how African Americans were treated" is like saying, you can't compare a murder of 1 person to a murder of 1000 people. No one is dehumanizing gays, nor denying them proper housing, employment, education and basic rights as were African Americans in years past. I am so sick of everyone equating gay rights to the civil rights movement. It is not remotely the same. I am for gay rights and I believe you are born this way, not a choice and yes gays have faced some persecution but on face value you cannot even begin to compare. Gays cannot say they were denied the right to sit anywhere on a bus. They cannot say they were forced to "shuck and jive" and avert their eyes in fear that a white person thought they were uppity. They didn't have to change cars on a train becuase they had passed the Mason-Dixon Line. It is not a fair comparison at all.
i'm gay. but i still think this is wrong. of course i want equal rights for everybody (not living in the US, but anyways) and of course i'm against Prop 8, but we still have to make a difference between that and our case. We have already gained a LOT of rights in a lot of countries… and, even if that fight for equality isn't over yet, let's stay calm, ok? getting aggressive on this topic (and i find this picture to be aggressive) is just as bad as voting yes. I'm sad this whole Prop 8 thing made the difference between gay and straight appear MUCH much larger than it really is.

I actually made a comment to a friend about this last night. What all of this prop 8 stuff reminds me of is how it was not acceptable for whites to marry blacks. Though it is now permissible under the law, people STILL face judgment when in an interracial relationship. It's extremely sad.
The moral argument will continue for years to come. Let's take a step forward and at least stay objective with state constitution and give equal rights to all couples. Discrimination against a group of people is unfair and unnecessary, and does not need to be written into law.
