An interesting statistic!
Mormons all across the country are donating funds and volunteers to support Prop 8, which seeks to write discrimination into the California constitution - banning gays and lesbians from enjoying the same right and protections afforded to them by marriage that their straight friends and family members currently enjoy.
77% of funding for Prop H8te comes from Mormons.
What a great use of their money!

i cannot believe the level of hate here and it is NOt against gays it is against mormons. the comments about mormons and their beliefs and practices are not true. if you want to sound intelligent about your comments on mormons and least get an accurate and informed education.

I think its so sad that the second anything comes up about mormons and what they believe, everybody starts hating on them. If I didn't know any better I would think that you all are doing the exact thing that you think is so dispicable. . . DISCRIMINATING!! Most of you have no knowledge of the real mormon life. No we don't marry off 14 year olds to old men. And even if we did that is our right just as much as it is for gay men and women to be married. I am LDS and live right in the heart of Utah where 99% of my neighbors are mormon. But guess what. . . we are just like everybody else. we have our problems just like everybody else. I'm not against gay marriage. My family is not against gay marriage. But just like gay people I have the right to feel and believe and practice whatever I believe. That doesn't mean I am going to take away your right to the way you choose to live it simply means that I may not agree with the things you believe. But I have the right to that just as much as you have the right to be Gay or Lesbian or athiest or catholic or any other belief you may have. By people judging us and hating us for the things we believe it just makes this world so much worse!!

Perez- Be serious! Are you really surprised that a CHURCH with as much money as the LDS has would put money towards legislation that supports their values and beliefs. I mean celebrities are donating money against Prop 8 because THAT supports their values. There are literally MILLIONS of active Mormons all over the world, and part of holding a Temple Recommend is to give tithe which literally equates to 10% of your income. So with millions contributing an average of 50 bucks a week to the church…you do the math. Of course they are donating. They have to do something, considering they don't have to contribute to a Presidential Campaign now. Im sure the money that went to Prop 8 was supposed to go towards that.

All IRC section 501(c)(3) organizations, including churches and religious organizations, must abide by certain rules:
**their net earnings may not inure to any private shareholder or individual,
**they must not provide a substantial benefit to private interests,
**they must not devote a substantial part of their activities to attempting to influence legislation,
**they must not participate in, or intervene in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office, and
**The organization's purposes and activities may not be illegal or violate fundamental public policy.
The Mormons have clearly violated this and that church should pay taxes just like all the rest of us do.

Individual donors are, and the fact that 77% of them are mormon doesn't mean the church is pushing it on them. we are not forced to believe this religion just like any other religion thats out there. what people do with their money is their choice. what people believe is right is also their choice.

They have actually asked all Calif. students in my out-of-state school to volunteer 13 hrs of their time to call California residents! It's ridiculous! Um mormons haven't practiced polygamy since 1890. which is around the same time that the U.S. outlawed polygamy. mormons weren't the only ones who practiced polygamy and only about a small portion of the church practiced it. but obviously you would rather just say f**k them instead of getting your facts straight.

Reading stuff like this pisses me off. The majority of you are misinformed. This is not prop H8TE. Listen, this is by no means discrimination. Voting yes on prop 8 will allow domestic partnerships within same sex relationships. Fair, right? They will be treated equal just like everyone else. What it will prevent is having it taught in our school systems that is an acceptable thing to do. It will have a MAJOR affect in ALL churches. Having the legal system force churches to preform same sex marriages. Placing law before personal morals and god is WRONG. I am mormon and have many gay friends whom I love but this prop is bigger than just letting gays/lesbians able to marry. It will affect all and that is truely tragic. Also, no one is making the mormons donate their time and money towards this cause. They just happen to be an orginization that is passionate about protecting marriage and their families. Something that should be admired and not looked down upon. There are tons of mormons who do not believe in this whole "Yes on 8" thing. They protested in Salt Lake and took signed petitions stating the money is being wasted on these ads; money that could be use to better the church.
I'm mormon and I am for gay marriage. So are most of my mormon friends. Don't classify all mormons based on the actions of some. Even the most hardcore fundamental mormons have those who think it's everyone's right to be happy, gay or straight.
When you classify mormons all as homophobes you are no better than people who stereotype all gay people. Come on Perez, look into the issue and see how many care.
PS - I'd have been there to march in SLC but I live over 1000 miles away. You can be someone who believes in god and be pro-gay.

I don't care if a religion will not marry me to another man. I want my FEDERAL rights… not anyones RELIGIOUS rights. Separation between Church and State… not a book of fiction to dictate me life.

I am a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons). Please get your facts straight before you go discriminating and making generalizations. There is a great site, mormon.org, where you can learn about our basic beliefs.
It breaks my heart that Perez is all about "equality" and "tolerance"….but when it comes down to it he is promoting hate against others.
The church itself is not donating money to Yes on 8. Members, of their own free will, are donating because they believe marriage is between a man and a woman.
Under California Family Code Section 297.5, members of domestic partnerships have the same rights and privileges that married couples do. So the real issue here is changing the definition of marriage. It is not about hate. It is about protecting the institution of marriage.
Please become educated before you spread misinformed generalizations around.

That doesn't mean 77% of Mormons are anti gay marriage. I'm mormon and so is my husband. We are all for gay marriage.In fact most of my mormon aquaintances support gay marriage. Some members of the church do not support gay marriage which a personal choice, just as it is my personal choice to support it. And by the way, I was 23 when I got married and I am the only wife to my husband. I can cut my hair, wear lots of make up and have a little or as many children as I like thank you!

I am not against same sex marriage at all and I truly believe in family no matter the sex of the adults. I also believe that two men or two women can raise a child it is more of team work than gender. HOWEVER, with any prop, it leaves open this big GREY area that makes it fail. This one to me is not that churches could be sued for discrimination or what it would cost… yadayada.

MY ISSUE is children. If same sex couples are allowed to wed what will be the requirements for teaching children?? What about sex ed to 12 year olds, how do you teach safe sex? Is their even a safe way NOW for same sex couples? When I was growing up it was always watch out for AIDS, use a condom, practice abstinence. Now what will we teach?

The Mormon prophet asked the church to fight against prop 8. Although I was born and baptized Mormon (and for many years have not been) and my family still is. It is hard to understand why so many of them are against the prop. The only place where I'm allowed to hang up my own "No on Prop 8" Signs are in my room and on my car. I was not "allowed" to place them on the windows, even though my mom is against prop 8 as well. It's so hard to figure out why my siblings cannot accept homosexuality. I get so frustrated being at home and being around them. I even asked my sister if she would love me, if she would want me to get married if I were gay and she basically told me that she would still love me but she wouldn't want me to get married. I just don't understand that. She feels like homosexuals only want to have sex, that that is their only reason for being "the way they are." It is gross and I am sad that they feel that way. I just hope that others in California can change their minds and see that everyone deserves the same rights and that it is time for change.
And by pointing this out, who is promoting h8te now?
