Poll finds 23% of Texans think Obama is Muslim
A University of Texas poll to be released this week shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.
Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.
The Obama-is-a-Muslim confusion is caused by fallacious Internet rumors and radio talk-show gossip. McCain went so far at one of his town hall meetings to grab a microphone from a woman who claimed that Obama was an Arab.
The Texas numbers are unusual because most national polls show that just 5 to 10 percent of Americans still believe Obama is a Muslim — less than half the number of Texans who buy into the debunked theories.
The UT poll shows McCain running ahead of Obama statewide, with a 51 percent to 40 percent margin. Cornyn, a first-term Republican from San Antonio, leads Rick Noriega, a state representative from Houston, 45 percent to 36 percent. Another 14 percent of voters remain undecided in the contest.
The poll found that 89 percent of Lone Star State voters say the country's economic situation is worse than a year ago. And President Bush and Congress both get record low marks.
Just 34 percent of Texans approve of Bush's job performance — a big change for a former governor who won re-election 10 years ago with 70 percent of the vote. And Congress is even more unpopular:
Just 8 percent of Texas voters approve of the work being done on Capitol Hill.
The telephone poll was conducted by the Texas Politics Project and Department of Government at The University of Texas at Austin. The poll was conducted from Oct. 15 to 22, and had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.

He graduated in that position because he goofed off, and he admitted it. He wasn't in that position because of intelligence, military schools operate much differently than traditional colleges. Obama's Harvard degree might as well be toilet paper, I don't care where a candidate graduated from. Don't generalize Texans either, it's funny you find them arrogant. You'd find more hospitality in the south or midwest country than you ever would in the big city. If you're so focused on college maybe we should talk about Biden and his history of plagarism. I will admit Biden has said a few things like when he called Obama's vote AGAINST funding for our troops "nothing but a political ploy" and when he said "the presidency doesn't lend itself to on the job training." The funny thing is the DEMS think their precious Clinton's actually want Obama to win. In a recent interview when asked about McCain Bill Clinton said he was a good man and him suspending his campaign to help with the bailout was necessary. When asked about Obama Clinton simply said, "I don't really know him."

polls like this are irrelevant. for one thing, you don't know the reader demographic. you also don't know the number of people tested.
for instance, a poll in USA TODAY claimed "america's top 5 jobs according to the people". they weighted 1018 responses to represent the whole country. 1018 doesn't equal 300 million.

Also maybe if Obama hadn't slipped up during that interview and said "my muslim faith" and hadn't been corrected by the interviewer who reminded him that he meant to say christian faith people in Texas wouldn't think he is a muslim at all. As someone who lives in Texas (for now), trust me, this comes as no surprise. I've actually talked to people who think Obama shouldn't be president because he doesn't look American or have American value, which they basically define as WHITE and CHRISTIAN. Yeah, because the original inhabitants of this country were white and Christian. Obama gives them $1,400 more and McCain $400. At $50,000, McCain cuts about $700, Obama cuts $1,000. At $150,000, Obama and McCain’s tax bills are nearly identical - still cutting BTW. At $200,000, a family’s tax bill would stay the same under both. It is at $250,000 that things change. McCain proposes no change. Obama’s tax increase kicks in here raising the bill by about $700. As for the small business owner that some others have yelled about as well… 99% of small business owners are unaffected or see a tax decrease under Obama.

The only way the percentage could change is if the population changed, but the writer already established as referring to it's "current" size.
