Cancer survivor, advocate and Nanny alum Fran Drescher has just written this great editorial, which we think everyone should read!
She says:
"When did it become okay to discriminate? What country are we all living in anyway? I thought this was America, am I wrong?
Wake up folks before it’s too late! This country was founded on the premise of separation of church & state. And why do you suppose that was? Because back in the day of our forefathers, (ya know, the dudes who fought and died for our freedoms) life under an oppressive British empire was more than they could take.
Living in a “my way or the highway” nation sucked! Dictation, Denial and Discrimination was the name of the game until our founding fathers decided that they’d had it!
“Let freedom ring!”, they shouted. And a HUGE part of that freedom was of course separation of church and state. If you are truly an American, (and not some closeted fascist) you are part of the privileged few on the planet who get to live in a country that supports tolerance of diversity. Heck we celebrate it! We can be who we want to be, pray to whomever we choose to pray and live as equals regardless of gender, race, creed or sexual orientation.
To think that in this upcoming election there is actually a proposition to add an amendment to the California Constitution to legalize discrimination! Shame on us! This proposition is not about gay marriage; it’s about hate, discrimination and intolerance of diversity. It is wholesale, unadulterated hate-mongering and it MUST be snuffed out in a dramatic fashion at once to illustrate to those behind it that in America we embrace the neighbor who might be different from us and are proud of it!
So to all you TRUE Americans, get out there and vote on November 4th, and let’s reject hate.
Get all your friends, co-workers and relatives to vote too and make sure you vote NO on proposition 8.

I do not have a problem with freedom of expression, I also do not have any issues with the gay community, it does not affect my life or my general way of living. What I do have a problem with is people not knowing how to read our constitution. Where in the constitution does it state that there should be a separation of Church & State.. It does not it just states that the government should not interfere with the church. I am tired of people including the media mentioning our constitution on this and it is not even correct. Fran is entitled to her opinion but she should not be using the constitution to do so.
Well said, I agree 100%. How can you truly call yourself an American if you can't learn to love and accept those who are different from you? We've seen it throughout our country's history-discrimination against Irish immigrants (early 1900's), Women's Suffrage (1920's), Japanese/American Interment (1940's), African Americans (1950's, 60's) Hispanics (today), LGBTs (today), and dating back even since the start of our country.
You wouldn't want to be discriminated against, would you? Then don't do it to someone else. It's not right!

I agree with her feelings about freedom and hatred and the vote on Prop 8 in California, but dear Fran needs a history lesson. Our "forefathers" fought British imperialism over taxes. Remember "no taxation without representation?" Anyone who thinks that taxes are not a social issue have completely missed the point. I personally believe that both parties have veered WAY off course. The Democratic Party no longer fights for the working class…but rather the non-working class. The Republican Party only fights for fiscal responsibility when it's the minority party. Separation of church and state is based on the premise that a church can never impose its doctrine on the people…but it also works both ways. By the same token, the state can not impose its own beliefs; political correctness, agostic, atheism, etc…on churches. This has crossed the other line now. Government is now involved in what churches are allowed to preach and what private schools can teach. Where have we gone? That's what I want to know…what happened to the real American way?

Why, what did I say that was wrong? Have you ever been to a gay pride parade? I have. If it was ok, then I would take my kids. I have never heard of an adults only parade, and this one clearly is. We shoould also have one that lies to our face when asked direct questions. So here it is, Obama says that he had no idea his " Auntie " was living in the US illegally…oh really. He never heard from family that she was denied 4 years ago….oh really. After he was elected Sen, not one family memeber came to him and said, hey Mr Sen, Nephew guy, can you do anything to help your aunt out? Oh really. I don't really see how someone can say they have no problem with gays but don't want the idea of gay marriage taught to their kids. If you don't want the idea of gay marriage being taught would teaching kids two men or two women can love each other and when they are committed and ready they can have a civil union be OK? Or how about the idea two individuals of the same gender can love each other in much the same manner a man and woman can?
My point being if you don't have a "problem with gays" Why do you have a problem with children being exposed to the concept early in life ? Would this not encourage a tolerant attitude amongst children where there could be an open forum for discussion about the subject and in turn they could come to you with their questions? Would this not perhaps stop children and youth from being dragged behind trucks to die ? Or shot to death as we have recently seen ?
I just really wish people would stop dressing up their disapproval and disgust with gays in a cloak of pseudo acceptance. Stop insulting our intelligence.

It's a thin line and you cannot be proud and say one thing because as they fought for the separation of church and state the ones who lived in this land for hundreds of years before were poisoned with the common flue and slaughtered for their gold and territories. They have begun focusing on labor and unions again and have brought some pro life candidates into the fold. Obama's platform has concentrated on repopulating the working and tax paying middle class since day one, and he hasn't strayed. McCain jumped on the bandwagon too late when he realized that plutocratic tax cuts appeal only to his base and not the rest of the voters he needs to win the election. I think the Repubs will also begin to shift more to the middle after this election. I'm hoping there will be a true, centrist, third party that will spring up before the next elections to keep them both in check!

Obviously you have no kids. My 8 year old has already been asking me how 2 men can have a baby. We have a very good friend that is gay and wants to marry his partner. I would go because I really do love this guy, but i would not take my kids. If it was all ok then our brain would not think anything of it, much like when you see a man and woman together. You think nothing of it. You do not have the same mental reaction when you see 2 men together. Hurray to Fran Drescher for Standing up and speaking for all. I am a mother of an 17 year old gay stepson. I love him dearly and I want him to be able to have the option of getting married if he so choses. The reason I hate organized religion in this county is that they like to dictate to all how to live our lives. How can you deny gays and lesbians their rights? They all work hard like the rest of us, they pay their taxes and they love and hurt right the rest. How come we take their tax dollars , we allow them to fight for the freedom of our county and give their lives but we cannot give them the right to make a commitment for their love? I have had the honor and the pleasure of having many gay and lesbian friends and they are more commited in their relationships to one another than any so called straight friends that I have. So it is time to stop this nonsense and stop letting the mormons and the religious right control our country. We live in a democracy for God's sake so lets act like it.

People need to bother reading about the founding of this country before they start PREACHING. The US was founded on Christian principals by mostly Christian monotheists. There is no provision for a separation of church and state in the founding documents.
Here is the exact wording:
"Congress should not establish a religion and enforce the legal observation of it by law, nor compel men to worship God in any manner contrary to their conscience, or that one sect might obtain a preeminence, or two combined together, and establish a religion to which they would compel others to conform" (Madison, Annals of Congress, 1789).

For instance, my parents are not the most modern, but they had ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFICULTY with explaining to me why they were some children with two moms or two dads when I went to elementary school.
