In a recent interview Underwood said, "I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate. It's saying that the American public isn't smart enough to make their own decisions. I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to."
We think that's an unfair statement, Carrie!
Why are you assuming to know where people are coming from when they voice their political opinions?

I do applaud those celebs who don't take sides and just encourage young people to vote, but I don't approve of them telling us to "VOTE OBAMA" or "VOTE McCAIN!" Let us make our own decisions. It's pretty interesting how people think everyone in America is perfect and will research the possible candidates thoroughly and base their decisions on who they feel is the best for the spot. I guarantee you that over 60% of the people who voted in this election did not research the candidates, nor do they know what they stand for. Remember Howard Stern's idea to interview people about Obama? He asked people if they were happy with Obama's VP pick of SARAH PALIN and people responded they were thrilled. WHAT?! So in essence, these celebrities could potentially have a very strong sway in imposing their ideas on people who have no clue what is going on. I have to say actually, that I tend to agree with her. Of course, we live in a nation where any one is free to choose and say what they feel. I feel like instead of celebrities constantly going out there and plugging a specific candidate…they should be out there encouraging people to be smart, learn the topics, the issues, the policies of each candidate and to actually get out there & vote. Most people in the age bracket of 18-24 don't vote let alone are even registered.

I agree 100% with CARRIE! I think it's wrong for celebrities to use their status to promote a candidate. People need to make their own choices, but many will just sit back and listen to what the people in the spotlight tell them is the thing to do or what choice to make. And…are any of the celebrities getting paid to back those candidates and advertise for them or promote them on nationwide television shows or other platforms of communication? Millions of dollars go into advertising and campaigning…I wouldn't be surprised if the celebrities who back candidates are getting some pocket lining and/or perks here and there. Come on, Perez - every celebrity knows that a certain number of people will be influenced by whatever they say, just because of their celebrity. I think it's reasonable for someone who has influence over others to be conscious of the possible impact of their public statements.

Newspapers and other companies endorse a president, I don't see the difference. Celebrities have the same right to an opinion as we do.

A celebrity who cannot name why they are endorsing is different that another medium expressing endorsement after covering the issues for YEARS and YEARS and YEARS. Companies do NOT endorse a president. Workers can, and CEO's can in their name, but there has never been an official stance by any company.
I agree with Carrie… it drives me crazy when I'm watching a Madonna concert and she starts bashing McCain comparing him to Hitler, or I'm watching an interview with Heidi from The Hills and she's endorsing McCain, I just really wish celebrities would stop talking about their political or religious views, especially if they're going to try to push the ideas on people.

Oh for crying out loud! Just because a celebrity opens their mouth and voices their support for a particular candidate does NOT mean they are force feeding you their opinions!
Obviously, if you are eligible to VOTE, you are also capable of making your own decisions. Perhaps there are people who are influenced on a more grand scale by celebrity- but there are also plenty of people in the world who could care less.
As hard as this is to swallow, celebrities also happen to be people; just because every word they happen to utter becomes public domain does not mean they assume we as "regualr" people aren't smart enough to vote for ourselves.

just because shes keeping her political views privete doesnt make her automatically a republican or that she is embarrassed. thats stupid to assume, maybe she means what she said which is ITS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS WHAT SHE DOES WHEN SHE STEPS INTO THAT BOOTH. politcial talk is a social phopa and people do it now for the shockfactor and to be controvercial, basically duping people into feeding into their 15 min limelight. and for less intelligent people who dont educate themselves on candidates or dont have the time to, the media which is filled with pushy political celebs is their only means to form opinions. so yes celebs are powerful, and they know it.promoting to go out and vote is fine, but pushing your political agenda on to an easily influenced demographic is abuse of power. they can back who they want but which one of you has the millions of dollars to buy air time and preach to everyone about who you think they should vote for?? its not the same. honestly, when i see that stuff it just seems like they are being condescending assholes who think their voice and opinion is more valid then my own which is far from true. so kudos to carrie, and she is strong enough to take the heat from big celebs who like to over-step their boundaries and what their career entails which is to make movies/songs for MY entertainment. since when do i have to listen to them oustide of that? stick to your fucking scripts.

i agree with her 100% I think the best thing celebrities should do to get people to vote is to keep their political ideas neutral. Theres a lot of followers out there who will vote for someone just because a celebrity told them to.
