Equality Is NOT For All???

It is with great sadness that we report….
Proposition 8 most likely passed in California, effectively writing discrimination into the state constitution and prohibiting gays and lesbians from marrying.
As it stands now, around 52% of Californians voted in favor of prop 8, and 48% voted NO on H8te.
However, all hope is NOT lost!!!!!
About 3 million absentee and provisional ballots have yet to be counted. We know that we - and many of our friends voted via absentee ballots - so hopefully when everything is said and done, the numbers will turn around and the NOs will be in the majority.
You see, EVERY VOTE mattered! We sure hope (lots of hope in this post) that U voted.
Unfortunately, discriminatory measures did pass in Florida, Arizona and Arkansas, treating gays and lesbians like second class citizens.
Today is a great day for most Americans but a sad sad day for gay Americans!

I feel so sorry for the GLBT community of the U.S.A. Move to Canada. We're pretty much like the states minus the hatred. Here, everybody is equal (except Avril Lavigne…she's the USA's problem now lol)
I had to fill out a provisional ballot and I voted no, so there's another vote for our side!

This is such a joke! How can California, of ALL states in the US, ban gay marriage? I am so disappointed right now. I hope that Prop 8 does NOT pass. I had an absentee ballot and I voted NO. Hopefully the majority says NO and we can turn this baby around.

I am thankful not to be a part of a country who supports such notions and I hope that in the future America will prevail as a more educated and tolerant population instead of one that should be ashamed of themselves (well at least 52% should be ashamed).

Re: Spindoc – I think every minority group has similar issues, blacks had their issues in the past and that is why this is such a special victory for all those that went thru racism, women have been second rate citizens and in several nations still are so the achievement of many women is grand!! Hispanics do not have a right to live in this nation (not all but immigrants) yes they broke a law getting here but, there are reasons behind, this, they have no rights to get a drivers license, homes in some places, the deal with similar racisms that blacks anf gays deal with, we just need to all be able to live in unity and support eachother and stop the hate. I think this nation will change it will just take time but, our children will live in a real UNITED STATES!!!!

This community has redefined "family" yet and that is why they have a hard time accepting gays and why so many of them are closeted. Often a black gay is cut off from their family which keeps many in the closet. So, before you go and tell others to "get their facts right" maybe you should.

Unforunately, Prop 8 keeps alive an American tradition: discrimination. First it was Native Americans, then Irish immigrants, women, African-Americans, and now homosexuals. When will people realize that discrimination in any form is hatred? As a history student, I can only tell you that the "separate but equal" rational that has been applied to justifying "civil unions" has been used significantly before: during Apartheid in South Africa and during Segregation in the American South. Wake up people! Good lord I'm happy I'm Canadian!

The bigger problem in my mind is the rights of partnerships. This goes beyond whether people are allowed to marry or not– taxes, retirement pensions, health care, etc. rights are not extended to domestic partnerships.

This is truly disappointing. On such a historic night, it would have been nice to see this pass. I think it is horrible that the Government thinks they should have a say on who we marry. In a world where we have shows like The Bachelor and the Bachelorette, Tila Tequila, and Flavor of Love, how in God's name can they justify that marriage is a sacred thing in America. Sure it's sacred to those who are in LOVE. Marriage is a bond between two people who share a common feeling… LOVE and who want to put that love into writing. Why should that only be between a man and woman? Hopefully a CHANGE will come soon!

Once again the REAL issue here is that large groups of people only care about what effects themselves. A lot of gay people I know don't even want to get married because it's considered a straight institution. However, the fact that the rights that come with being married are a big deal. It is a lot of money, insurance etc.

This is so sad…I don't understand why anyone cares if someone loves someone and wants to get married. I am straight, and I support gay marriage because I believe that we can't stop two people from loving each other so why stop them from getting married?

Amendment 2 in Florida is not just for gays and lesbians, but for those who have children who are not wed, and those with domestic partnerships. I support gay marriage, but I think the main reason that Amendment 2 was passed is because the first words on the ballot describing it says, "One man and one woman.." If Floridians would have actually got past that first part, they would read that it also effects those who have things equivalent to marriage such as domestic partnerships.
The "yeson2" people played the gay and lesbian portion even after knowing it effected a wider range than that because more people are against gays and lesbian marriage rights than other marriage equivalents.
What part of ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL do these asshats not understand? Anyone that voted to pass this act of discrimination should be ashamed of themselves. I truly hope that when all of the votes provisional and absentee ballots are counted, ALL marriages retain their validity and we can take the gay-rights movement across the rest of the nation.

It still needs 60% to be passed. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I highly doubt this will pas. I must say I am shocked though. I thought it would by a landslide.
God is alive and well in California! I propose that we put another hate and discrimination amendment up there for God-fearing Americans to vote on. We could put fat people in boot camps and force them to lose weight or render them down for food for a third world country! Imagine what we could do with people afflicted with Down syndrome or autism in forced labor camps! What a wonderful world this would be if we can get rid of everyone who isn't a lilly white perfect hetero? The sky is the limit!
Sad for straight Americans too, I am sad. I was at a party last night with kids who have classmates who have a Mommy & a Mommy or a Daddy & a Daddy. They are so innocent in their questions as to why they can't be married, how unfair it is. Hopefully time will bring about love instead of hate.

I guess it's understandable all the LOSER republicans are misdirecting their hatred toward gays when they are really pissed a black man was elected president. It is shocking how many hateful people there are that still believe it is OK to legislate discrimination. Although the battle is far from over, it is discouraging to see so much hate wrapped in a flag and puked out in the name of God.
I can't believe that our country has become so blind!! I get so sick of people discriminating against gays!! I my self am not gay, but I have several friends, both old and new, that are gay, and I love them all dearly!! I live in a small town that is very much against homosexuality, and it makes me want to cry!! My mom argues with me almost everyday bout gay rights and how is says in the Bible that homosexuality is wrong…but guess what..it also says "Thou shall not judge!!!" People also need to realize that the Bible has been rewritten several times, so I choose to believe that some biggot but that in the Bible about homosexuality!! God is not hateful, and would never discrimate…so why do we as Americans discriminate and take away gay rights!!! It's wrong and people need to realize how wrong they are!! I hope and pray that Proposition 8 is totally not passed, because it's wrong, and people need to stop discriminating, and let people live their lives!!! Sorry to rant, but that's just how I feel!!! NO to Propostion 8!!
I am so sad! My boyfriend and I voted NO! Also most people I know did as well. I hope we get a final count and Prop 8 does NOT pass! I just don't understand why people want to control other peoples lives, when It doesn't even effect them. Let's stop being so selfish people and treat everyone fair and equal!

i hear you perez, and i'm sad too. but you know what? i think this is the last gasp of the right wing asshats, to be honest. the more unhappy people are, the more they seem to fall back on their ignorant, "old-fashioned", afraid-of-change reflexes. once the economy gets on the upswing again, the voices of these harpies will be reduced to a dull roar and civil rights WILL move forward. when people are generally happy in their lives, they are less likely to put energy into negative goals. i think that by the time my daughter and her girlfriend are old enough to start seriously thinking about marriage, it may very well be an option for them.
