This breaks our heart and confuses us so much.
Why would people who themselves are often victims of discrimination discriminate against others????
Our guess is that those communities are also more religious.

Civil marriage has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with equality - equal rights, privileges and protections.

Research dating back to the early 90's agreed with you but it's not the case nowadays. It's been proven that the methodology utilized for these research was extremely flawed. Nobody who has read peer reviewed articles on the subject would make such an uneducated claim.

Sorry Perez, I voted for Obama but voted againist same sex marriage in my state. I don't believe gays should be discriminated for being gay but getting "married" is between man and women. I believe they should pass a law in which gives gay a union compariable of what marriage is to straights. But leave us our weddings.

Judging from all the adds, it did not seem like advocates were reaching to those communities. People opposing Proposition 8 underestimated the power of the Black and Latino vote which, everyone knows by now is going to continue to grow…

I don't think we should hijack this thread but I've always contended that genetics can predispose someone to being gay by, for instance, presenting different hormone balances. But at the end of the day a gay person made a choice to be gay.

I am a mexican american, grew up with strict catholic family, and the first to go to a university (i'm in my 4th year) and every single one of my family members voted and voted NO. I live in AZ and it also passed, which saddens me soooo much.
I understand we still live in a time with racist and ignorrant people, and that the miniorites are finally getting someone on their side. But at the same time from someone who didn't vote for obama, saddens me that even though the supreme court already dealt with this, states believe they have to step in and discriminate even more.

You can ask yourself would I rather get together with that guy or with that girl, but it has absolutely no validity because you would not get with the guy since God made you straight. Re: PLO – i watched my mom die from breast cancer in my living room in 2006. for a couple days she laid in the bed with her eyes closed. she was still breathing but her soul was in Heaven. the only things she said during this time was "shut up!" to my dog and "i'm ready to go", speaking to God. on march 30, my dad asked her if she wanted to be with God in heaven, she nodded her head yes. the next day she had all the symptoms telling us she was going to die in the day or two. a friend of the family came over and said a prayer, while he was saying it my brother was kneeling next to my mom. as soon as our friend said "Amen", my brother turned to my family and told us she was gone. I know through my moms calmness and peacefulness that although she was with us physically, for those last few days her soul was already feasting with God in Heaven. my mom's touched a million lives, i coould tell you a whole bunch of stories. I just know God is real my mom being my witness. I wish I could explain it better but i can't and for that i apologize. I wish you wouldnt be so cruel about it though. your life would be better with HIm, I know it. I wish you could see that.

I had read that the polygamist cults in the southwest were going to screw with the votes for Prop 8. They were sending out emails and asking their followers to use fake address's and absentee votes as a way of getting it approved. I wouldn't doubt with all their "bleeding the beast" crap they do. Just a thought but someone might want to challenge the results and have them check into people falsely voting.

I feel the same way… before I moved last year, I was taking some college classes in Milwaukee, and talk about minority? I was the only white male, who also happens to be gay. I had people flippin their wrists at me, and lisping, and on and on. i don't live in CA but i would have voted NO on prop 8! Gays deserve the same rights as everyone else, including marriage!! Prop 8 passed — the will of the people regarding the definition of marriage has been decided for a second time. Now hopefully the supreme court justices in CA will not try to overturn the will of the people. As to why some of us Christians read Perez' blog, we love Teddy.

This is just so ironic. Perez, if a black person hadn't been running for president, I'm pretty sure Prop 8 would not have passed. But since one was, the entire black population turned out to vote for him, and most blacks are against homosexuality. What's disgusting to me is that I'm for McCain, but I did not support Prop 8. I vote for president based on foreign policy, and keep my social issues at the state government level. This is sad.
